A simple and uncomplicated explanatory book that picks 50 famous artworks and provides ample information (and delightful photographs) to deconstruct and appreciate their significance. Each artwork is explained richly using salient points of details including background of the artists themselves, historical context, influences and inspirations, connected other arts or practitioners, etc. I enjoyed learning about many of my (already) favorite artworks, as well as picked up many new favorites too.

У цій книзі автор зібрав 50 різноманітних мистецьких творів й детально їх розібрав: коли й ким вони були створені, чому були підібрані саме такі кольори й форми, які сенси в них закладені й ким надихалися митці.

Поділюся з вами декількома цікавими моментами, які я для себе зберегла:

• «Дві сосни, рівна далечінь» Чжал Менфу, прибл. 1310 р.
На ній, окрім самого пейзажу, знаходяться ще червоні штампи – це печатки різних колекціонерів, які володіли цим пейзажем упродовж століть й захоплювалися ним.

• «Зняття з хреста» Розгір ван дер Вейден, до 1443 р.
Якщо уважно розглянути картину, стає помітно, що простір на ній викривлено. Поверхня землі заходить доволі далеко всередину, але глибина "ніші" вгорі дуже мала. Поперечина хреста у верхній частині твору розташована ніби відразу за масверком, але його основа – далеко на задньому плані, за синьою сукнею Діви Марії. разом ці розбіжності створюють відчуття нереальності та підсилюють дискомфорт глядача.

• Етюди до фрески «Лівійська сивіла» Мікеланджело, прибл. 1510-1511 рр.
На малюнку є кілька позначок Мікеланджело, що нагадують шпильки з круглими голівками. Можливо, автор лишив їх як нагадування самому собі про найтемніші чи найсвітліші місця на майбутній картині, а може, хотів указати на певні м'язи студентам або колегам.

• «Зоряна ніч» Вінсент ван Гог, 1889 р.
В уяві Ван Гога небесні тіла були наділені метафізичним символізмом. Роком раніше в листі до колеги-художника Еміля Бернара митець назвав зірки кінцевим прихистком наших душ: "Можливо, після смерті вони будуть для нас не більш неприступними й недосяжними, ніж нині – чорні цятки міст і селищ на карті нашого земного життя".

• «Електичні призми» Соня Делоне, 1914 р.
Ручне шиття нагадувало Соні Делоне про ремесла рідної України. У той час її земляки-авангардисти також просували ідею повернення до народних традицій декоративно-прикладного мистецтва.

Each artwork has a story behind it and details that can easily be missed on first viewing. This beautifully illustrated book takes 50 artworks and does a detailed analysis of each one from Vincent Van Gogh to Paula Rego, so we get to learn a lot more about artworks that are both familiar and unfamiliar.

It's a great journey through art history that ensures it takes work from Asia, South America and Africa - as well as the European lens we often see art history through.

LOVE this deep dive into works of art (paintings, sculptures, masks, etc).

It's more than just paintings but that was my main interest but I received such an education on much more important cultural works.

The book is about 50 pieces of work but it highlighted with other pieces of work that were inspired (before or after) or similar works so that it was like the bubble affect. One piece touches another piece of art in some way.

Tho the main focus is one piece of art, in reality, I was exposed to over 230 pieces of art from all corners of the globe.

The book is also divided into eras:

- 1400-1599 The Growth of Knowledge - 9 pieces
- 1600-1799 The Expansion of Vision - 10 pieces
- 1800-1945 The Modern World - 11 pieces

Fantastic read for someone who likes art but has no idea what makes certain art pieces important or more appreciated. It gives tangible reasons why art is created well and some history as to why it was and, maybe still is, provocative or inspiring.
