My Favorite Color: A book for black girls in white spaces

Rate this book
Being a black girl in predominantly white spaces came with its challenges. It was a third space that stretched me in three African American culture, Caribbean heritage, and a white washed gospel. In this space I struggled with my identity. I never felt black enough amongst other POCs but around white folks, I was their exposure to all things black. This space, while challenging, also helped me redefine what being a black girl means to me. As you journey through this book, it is my prayer that you will find freedom in redefining what being a black girl means to you.

Hm, this book wasn’t what I thought it would be. First, upon reading the title and description I thought it would be more about how us Black girls can maneuver and navigate predominantly white spaces - I definitely wasn’t expecting poems. You can tell that these poems were written from the author’s perspective and life experiences… which is fine! It just threw me off from what I was expecting and what I would have preferred. Nonetheless, there are great poems in here and poems that I could definitely relate to. Good book overall.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I admittedly had different expectations going into read the book; yet it was still a nice treat. Josie takes the reader along her journey of self-reflection, identity, and self-love as a Black Caribbean woman. She weaves into her experience in a world that enforces standards on whiteness on her. This book of poetry was extremely timely for me in my navigating of self-identity. I would highly recommend.
