Kosuke Mikado, a bookstore clerk with the unwelcomed ability to see ghosts, is approached by Rihito Hiyakawa, a freelance exorcist, with an offer to be his assistant. Mikado is scared of ghosts and is reluctant to get involved in this type of work, but the pay would be double what he's currently getting getting from the book store and his hours would be far fewer. He agrees to give it a try and so begins our story.
The way Mikado assists Hiyakawa is by "entering" him and merging their cores in order to better see and expel the spirits. The experience feels very erotic and both men describe it as feeling incredibly good. In fact, it feels so good that Mikado passes out the first time they do it. What makes the whole experience feel so bizarre for Mikado is how those (for lack of a better word) sexual feelings are combined with his extreme fear of whatever ghosts they are trying to expel and the entire situation itself. Whenever Hiyakawa enters him it's like he loses control of his body, and it's extremely unsettling.
The premise of this manga is really good, but I think it is important to emphasize that this is, first and foremost, a paranormal mystery series. The relationship between Mikado and Hiyakawa is not the main focus, and in general, besides the merging of their cores, the bl elements aren't very strong. I've seen the anime (though I never finished it), and if it followed the manga faithfully, that doesn't change for a while, if at all. If you've finished the series, let me know!
I read this thinking it would get me interested in the story again, but it really didn't. I never finished the anime because I got bored, and this doesn't seem like it will be any different. The main case isn't bad, and one could consider this a slow burn, but something about their dynamic just doesn't work for me, so I won't be continuing the series. 3 stars
