God Explained in a Taxi Ride

Rate this book
This is a punchy, humorous, and probing look at the nature of religious belief, by the author of the massively successful "Whatever You Think Think the Opposite". In a series of brilliant visual episodes, Paul Arden investigates the questions that have persisted since our earliest days. As ever, he is a master of compression, getting us to scratch our heads as he examines our relationship to the divine.

Paul Arden (7 April 1940 – 2 April 2008) was an influential author of several books on advertising and motivation including "Whatever You Think, Think The Opposite" and "It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be" and a former creative director for Saatchi and Saatchi at the height of their advertising might.
In 1987 Arden was appointed executive creative director. He has spent 14 years with the agency, handling accounts of British Airways, Anchor Butter, Toyota, Ryvita, Nivea, Trust House Forte, Alexon Group and Fuji among others. His British Airways campaigns continue to be remembered as one of the greatest advertising campaigns of all time, changing the fortunes of the airline.
"Arden was the ringmaster behind the whole creative circus that saw British Airways become 'The World's Favourite Airline', The Independent become the new intelligentsia's favourite newspaper, Margaret Thatcher the nation's favourite leader and Silk Cut their favourite fag." Dave Trott, The Independent
"Tempestuous advertising director who thought up memorable campaigns for Silk Cut, BA and The Independent" Times Online
Arden chose to leave Saatchi & Saatchi in 1992 but remained a key consultant for the agency until 1995.

Baru pertama kali baca bukunya Paul Arden yang berjudul What You Think, Think the Opposite atas rekomendasi teman.

Bukan buku Paul Arden kalau isinya hanya tulisan.

Isi Buku

“Look, he said, pointing at the sunset. What do you think made that? Do you think it’s an accident? Do you think it’s a trick of the light? Do you think it’s a fluke?”
Uhm, Rayleigh’s scattering perhaps? I love it how the clueless author decides to end his masterpiece with this jaw-dropping bad piece of argument. Not that there were any arguments worth mentioning in the first place, which makes the claim he makes at the front cover, that his “book explains once and for all [the existence of God]”, all the more presumptuous.

* On atheism, the author writes: “But isn’t a firm belief in the non-existence of a God a religion in itself?” My my, what a life-changing eyes-widening revelation you stumbled upon Paul. Too bad I conjured this argument when I was eighteen and found out it wasn’t an argument at all when I was still eighteen.

* On the “proof of God”, the author proceeds as follows:
“1. We define God as that for which there is no greater.
2. God is perfection.
3. Perfection that actually exists must be greater than merely the idea of perfection.
4. Therefore God must exist: He is that for which there is no greater, and the mere idea of perfection is not as great as perfection that actually exists.”
Besides the fact that point three makes no more sense than a high male raccoon in a fluorescent tutu, the argumentation is painstakingly fallible. Ever heard of that thing called logic algebra whereas a false proposition may infer claptrap? Apparently not. Since you wrote a whole book with nothing but claptrap inside.

This book is somewhat really match with my understanding about God vs Religion:
1. God is exist. We can't see Him but we can feel Him. Jz like the WIND
2. Paul's illustration""God created the Sun, Men created a LightBulb"
Men r scared of darkness because in the dark they can't see, know, understand and predict anything surround .Men will try to
seek and follow any light they found near. Well, God indeed positioned Himself as "the Light of Life" but lot's of human can't
reach and understand His existence coz His supreme wisdom, then religion which was made by Man translated God (a.k.a
The Light) with more easy/ adaptive way, a human way; human thoughts, human culture..

I believe in God but not in Religion for my case is Church Organization, yet I do believe in Christ, Trinity, Bible and true prophets with their good teaching& wisdom; name it : King David, Mohammad, Buddha, Gandhi, etc.
Faith is a gift from God to us, Religion is made by men --> transform it to an organization. Sometimes, human-ego laid there.
Nevertheless, I still attend d church, but just for enriching my spirit, learning the Bible, God and Life, not more nor less.

At the end of the Book, question arose : "Do You Believe in God?"

It's not the best book that ever created by Paul Arden, he seem to be too carefull and write it in general terms. But overall, he still my fav author

I liked this book. It is a no bull shit straight to the point explanation. The agnostic in me feasted on this. Would definitely recommend this to the Religious ( as defined by Paul Arden) and the atheists. For the agnostics, I believe it is preaching to the Choir ( ahem.. if I may use this word). GoodRead!!

Bagaimana membandingkan ke-3 buku mewah Paul Arden? Bagusan buku yg pertama kemana2, terus dia kena "2nd book curse".. apalagi yg buku ke-3 ini, hadoohhhh...

Satu lagi point yg bikin (tambah) aneh; ono opo yo, ahli marketing jebolan saatchi kok ngomongin Tuhan, dibikin buku pula!

Jadi jika temannya taat beragama lantas taattttt semua... satu nonton JakJazz lantas satu RT ikutan nontonnnn semua... Yang lain beli iPod lantas segank pake iPodddd semua.. Semua melebur mjd satu identitas yg serupa, dan berbangga hati karenanya, dan memandang "lain" mereka yg menolak bergabung. Hanya sebentuk perilaku (dalam psikologi disebut sbg) konformitas, semata agar diterima oleh anggota kelompok.

Hanya sekedar trend! And for that, I dont want to buy that book. Although I got to admit that it was a damn fine book to be collected (and to be hold around).

But yeah, I guess it goes back to our very own perception to appreciate the books, or even any other thing offered by the life to us, no? I have no objection against that, no worries.

After all, perhaps there's nothing wrong that Arden was a Saatchi's graduate, and that now he tries to preach the better part of us. But I guess I'd rather have some other one (not His Messenger, not that far anyway, hehe) to deliver me the message. And I think it's just about choices.

I received this as a gift. I'm not sure that it's the kind of thing that I'd pay for, but I am very glad that I read it.

It is, by turns, both enlightening and annoying; to say that Paul Arden has tickets on himself is possibly understating things. But nevertheless, his take on the whole God conundrum is pretty interesting. It's not particularly dogmatic, and it pays attention to the difference between being religious and being spiritual - though never in a way that encourages a lot of division. Great illustrations help matters somewhat, though it would perhaps have aided the book if Arden's gatefold writeups hadn't been so weighted towards his Saatchi & Saatchi past. Really, the book isn't in need of such things.

For someone as cynical as myself - and I'm raised Catholic - it provided me with an opportunity to consider what I believe, and to do so in terms of how that can rub up against other people; or, indeed, how it may be similar to what other people (whose language I don't speak) are saying, if only I had the ability to understand it.

So yeah - despite Arden's obvious self-lovin', this is a worthwhile read. It might just incur a little self-examination, which is really the aim of all books touching on faith, surely?

OK this is my first Paul Arden's book.
Read in in Bahasa Indonesia and found it an interesting and fascinating books.
Simple but with deep issue. I love the way Arden's describing god or GOD. I also love pictorial books because picture can explain almost everything to anyone.
God issue have been an interesting issue for me and I believe that also for anyone who seeks truth for everything.

How we find our own GOD in our daily life.
How religion or belief shapes our life?
What is a belief or religion?
Are you religious kind of person or just simply spiritual person?

That's the main question in this book.
And I'm going to read this book 10 times again ^..^

This is the kind of book that you can pick up again and again. It's very well-designed, easy-to-read and a fantastic affirmation that faith is not tied to the church.

As a non-practising Catholic, this tiny book (it doesn't even take 10 minutes to read) spoke volumes to me. Just like Arden, I believe that people should try to be "good" in everything they think, say and do. The fact that I don't go to confession once a week doesn't have any bearing on my "goodness".

Buy it for yourself, or give it as a gift (I got mine from my Dad). Arden ran Ogilvy advertising firm so he knows what he's doing - the blurb is what will pull you in. Apparently, God explained in a taxi ride is "The second best book about God". Genius.

This overpriced book is like God For Dummy that literally wrote by a dummy. Paul Arden, is an author with inspiring words to read, but God knows he doesn't have the capacity to write a book about Him.

I love other Paul's work, but this one is totally mess. If you're Paul's fans, this book might become your collection. But if you're God's fans and seek books about Him to read, i suggest you read Karen Armstrong's.

If you're wondering if you should buy the book:

1) It's pro-God

2) It does what its title says, you can read it in under 10 minutes in a book shop. But then, my advice isn't really for people who can afford a taxi ride to work.

Given the place I was at and the time I was reading this book, it was quite situational read for me. However, though a nicely put topic, it didn't influence me a bit. Strong faith, what say Paul Arden? ;) Nice illustrations to match up the witty text! Interesting read to go with a boring taxi ride.

A one-sit- read compelling book

An intruding title that made me hesitate at first wether to get the book or not
