Black Cat Circus #1

The Daredevil

Rate this book
As a teen, Drake ran away and found the Black Cat Circus, he thought it was his ticket out of town. Instead, he found a family and discovered a magical world he never knew existed. Becoming the Daredevil was a perfect fit for him and the adrenaline-loving beast within.

Now, ten years later, he’s returning to the town he left as a kid and it’s stirring up a lot of emotions. A shy but sweet man with a camera captures his attention completely. Even Drake’s dragon craves him.

Eli is a journalist who hides behind a camera and his words as he records the world he lives in but rarely takes part in it. He gets assigned the traveling circus that comes to town, when he longs to do something more meaningful.

Everything changes when Eli meets the Daredevil. He’s drawn to the fearless man, but there’s something familiar about him too. Drake reminds him of a wild boy he crushed on in school.

Eli embraces the adventure as Drake pushes him out of his comfort zone, but as these two grow closer, it becomes harder for Drake to hide who he is. Can Eli accept a man with a soul of a dragon?

The Daredevil is a missed connection, opposites attract, paranormal MM romance with light exhibitionism. It is part of the Black Cat Circus multi-author series that features found family and a magical cast of characters. Each book can be read as a standalone but is better enjoyed as a series.

Drake & Eli
Rating: 3.3 ⭐
Narrator: Zachary Zaba

- Paranormal
- Human/Dragon Born
- Found Family
- Mate Bond
- Opposites Attract

This was a sweet and sexy read where you get an initial glimpse into the Black Cat Circus. It's very instalove, fated mate vibes so if that is not your thing then don't read this.

Drake found his place and his people when he joined the circus ten years ago, eventually becoming the daredevil showman he is today. The poor thing went through several foster homes as a child since no one knew what to do with his energy and need for adrenaline. He didn't even know himself who he truly was with no records of his birth family. Seven, the ringmaster, knew when they met that Drake had a dragon in him and proceeded to teach the young man about the beast inside. Now, Drake cannot shift but he has most of the other shifter traits and abilities.

Eli hates his job because he is not respected at the office, yet he continues to hide in the shadows of life instead of taking chances. He has a talent for seeing things as they truly are and can show true beauty in the mundane with his photography. Instead of getting assigned one of the big article pieces, he's given the traveling circus story that he begrudgingly accepts. Eli is annoyed and doesn't anticipate that this carnival and circus will be any different than the others. Well, he is in for a surprise once he experiences the acts and when a growly beautiful man catches him taking a naughty photo of one of the performers...Whoops!

They have an instant attraction and Drake is drawn to Eli's scent. Drake calling Eli "Marshmallow" the whole book was adorable and sickly sweet. Eli takes all the new revelations in stride and gains an inner confidence he sorely needed, just from being around the circus family and his dragon. The tattoo element was cool and a new one for me, so I really liked that addition.

The narrator was pleasant to listen to and had two distinct voices for the MCs, so I never got confused about who was talking. The voices also seem to match the characters well, which is always a plus when listening to a book on audio. I hate when the voice doesn't match the character at all, it can just kill the whole experience.

I received a free copy of this audio via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

3 1/2 stars rounded up.

It’s been a while since I’ve binged and author but I’ve been in a rough brain space and am desperate for something sweet and fun that manages to not be poorly written or problematic. Low angst tends to be meh most of the time but this author has hit the spot for me this week.

I wasn’t going to continue this series since the other books are written by different authors but I’m intrigued enough by the characters introduced in this one that I want to see their stories.

Anyway, this book is sweet and sexy and uncomplicated and I had fun. 🤷🏻

“Eli’s mouth was wide open, practically asking me to fill it. I placed a finger under his chin, lifting his face to mine and I leaned in and licked his top lip. The soft inhale turned into a moan as he let me explore his mouth with mine. “

I have been really looking forward to reading this modern day, paranormal, MM romance, circus collaboration series. And have no fear, I didn’t see any clowns!

I absolutely love the magic of a Circus and the idea of circus life and circus found family. I only went once when I was 16 but I still recall it with so much fondness. So bright and loud. Plus let’s not forget the food!

This was a delightful opposites attract, low angst, sweet as all hell love story. Eli is absolutely precious, who is kind and smart and really suffers from low self esteem. He spends his time behind a camera hoping to never be seen. Drake on the other hand is The Daredevil in The Black Cat Circus and wants everyone to see him!! He is instantly smitten with our sweet Eli and sparks fly, but Drake has a secret…Can Eli handle the truth or will he keep hiding?

I think this was a delightful start to the series. The nature of this series makes the romances run fast, which is not my favourite typically but truthfully makes sense and was done well. And that end, OMG it was so CUTE, I had such a giddy smile on my face. As well, I freaking loved all the ferris wheel scenes. My husband and I took a ferris wheel the night we got married.

I don't know about you, but when I go to the circus it feels like I'm entering a magical world of fun. And this book created that feeling for me. The world building and characters were very intriguing, fully developed, and with some unexpected magical surprises (not gonna give them away but definitely fun with a unique twist). All the characters had different personalities, adding to the story.
Drake and Eli were so sweet and hot together. Eli slowly blossomed as the story progressed, realizing he wasn't such a wallpaper after all. There wasnt much change for Drake, but this worked for his character. Drake was the Daredevil Eli needed in his life, supporting him, and opening Eli's eyes to his worth.
I was hooked from the first couple of pages and addicted by end the of the book to world of The Black Cat Circus. I can't wait to read the next book. And knowing it's a different author that will give this world a new twist, makes it even more exciting.

This was a super cute, low angst and fun read! My first from this author, and definitely won’t be the last! I really enjoyed it. I loved how the author put emphasis on them kissing all the time, like one does when you first start having feeling for each other. Their relationship was a perfect mix of both sweet and sexy.

Two words. Very. Sexy. I absolutely loved The Daredevil. I have been following's Duckie Mack's writing for quite some time and it never disappoints. The Daredevil is the first book in The Black Cat Circus series where every book is written by a different author. I haven't read a book with fantasy elements in it for a while because I find it difficult to follow but this book was so easy and fast to read and I couldn't get enough! I hope in the future to read more about Drake and Eli.

Another amazing story by Duckie!
I love a dragon, and Drake was absolutely amazing! (If you’ve not read the Dragon King series by Duckie (as Debbie McQueen) please do, it’s fantastic!)
Back on track, this is the story of Drake and Eli. Drake is the Daredevil in the Black Cat Circus, performing death defying stunts to whoops of the crowd. Eli is a journalist with dreams of bigger things. When Eli first sees the Daredevil, he thinks they couldn’t be more different. Drake is bold, confident, and risks his life every night. Eli has always played it safe, and he’s reluctant to leave his comfort zone. With Drake by his side, Eli learns to be a bit bolder and take more risks, knowing Drake will always keep him safe.
Duckie brought the heat, the sweetness, the emotion, and a very cool paranormal touch to this wonderful story. I so related to so many things about Eli (fear of heights? Check! Scared of motorcycles? Check!) and I loved watching him grow more confident and comfortable with himself (maybe some day I’ll ride a Ferris wheel 🤣).
There’s also some very fun Duckie Easter eggs!
-A sexy daredevil
-A shy journalist
-🔥🔥🔥 times
-A fantastic band of circus performers
-Sweetness galore!

I really enjoyed the ecopy and was excited to listen to the audible. It took me back when I first read it. So sweet...so HOT...wonderful start to the Black Cat Circus series. Drake and his marshmallow Elijah was truly fated. The narrator really did well...my first audio with Zachary Zaba and I was disappointed. Now I'm super excited to listen to more in the series.

This book is my introduction to Duckie Mack and I will say I was hooked from the start. I really love paranormal romances and I was so ready to jump into this series. Absolutely this is a great start to the series. I couldn't help but love Eli and Drake. So opposite but they clicked instantly. I loved how their past meshed into their present and future. Sweet with heat is this one...no angsty drama. True love at its best...5STARS!!!

Oh my gosh! I was highly anticipating this book along with this series. I love books with carnival/fair themes, so a series that has not just carnival/fair themes but also has mm themes, it's such a perfect combination of what I love to read.

Drake is the Daredevil, he's the one who does the death defying stunts that blows people's minds. After all, how could someone survive those stunts??

Eli is a photographer/journalist working for a company who doesn't respect him, he always gets overlooked and he is always given the 'fluff' pieces. When he gets assigned to do a piece of the carnival that's in town he's not thrilled, but upon arriving his thoughts and opinions begins to shift. And when Drake catches him taking a rather risque photo of Brighton, the moment changes thier lives for the better.

I have read A LOT of Duckie's works, I've been a fan of hers for quite some time. So, while I was reading this I found some Easter eggs. The first one being from Pies and Promises, and the second Easter egg I came across was from Duckie's Dragon King series. It was so cool seeing characters from Pies and Promises appear in this story! It was such a cute nod to one of Duckie's other books. There was also a nod to her Dragon Kings series as well, and while I haven't personally read Of Heart and Wings, this book definitely made me want to!

There was so much detail and depth to this book, and you can just tell how much work was put into creating a great book. With not only fantastic characters you can't help but want to get to know, but also having an incredible background that the story is taking place in. Reading this book made me want to go to a carnival SO BAD!!

Peanuts is a matchmaking cat, at least that's what I believe, and the moment when Drake and Eli found that picture in Drake's prized treasure box? Made me aww out loud, it was such a sweet scene that really tied in the bonded mates aspect. That moment made it feel even more real.

I'm looking forward to learning more about Brighton, Coal, Seven, and of course, Peanuts. I'm so excited for more of the upcoming books and the characters!! Also, Carol's character was a hoot! She helped nudge Eli to start taking risks, to have an adventure! I fell in love with these characters and this is my favorite read of 2023!

Wildly romantic! These were the two words I managed to put together to describe The Daredevil to a book chat group WHILE I was still reading it. I also said that even though I felt bad with a headache, I had a HUGE smile on my face. These were the feelings I was putting together just while reading the book. Even now, I can’t quite put into words all I feel about this book. For me Duckie Mack is usually a slow burn, romantic, steamy feel. The Daredevil felt fast like a motorcycle ride through the highways around metro DC in the evening. It felt hot and spicy, but romantic like that old country song by Shenandoah I want to be loved like that.

Welcome to the Black Cat Circus! Drake joined at 18 when he aged out of foster care after always being labeled the problem child. To be fair, he was always a hyper child, feeling like he had a stirring beneath his skin. It wasn’t until he met Seven and the rest of the BCC that he felt at home and that he learned what was truly under his skin. Now Drake has become the Daredevil performing all kinds of dangerous and death defying stunts for the BCC that let him feel wild and free. Eli is a shy and anxious photojournalist who has just been sent to the BCC to write an article for his newspaper. When these two meet, the sparks fly and fly high. Soon they can barely stand to part from each other. What will Drake and Eli do when the circus pulls out of town? Will Drake stay or will Eli leave the nest?

I’m in love with the Black Cat Circus! I mean who doesn’t want to runaway to the circus at some point in their life? Drake and Eli are two puzzle pieces that fit seamlessly together. Even Drake’s dragon wants to cuddle with Eli when they are together. They are beyond sweet together, fitting each other’s needs without even realizing it. I want to see more of this couple, I want to see the others find their soul mates, their marshmallow’s. Coming up soon The Firedancer by Rye Cox, The Aerialist by Morgan Lysand, and The Ringmaster by Kota Quinn.

This is a great opener to this short series centered around a supernatural traveling circus. Eli is a journalist/photographer who has sort of turtled in on himself and made himself small and bland and not the type of person to be noticed. He's sent on a BS assignment to do a puff piece on the circus - and find a world of magic, love, and himself.

Drake sort of reminded me of the hellhounds and dragons from Alice Winters' Community of Species books - full of boundless energy that needs to be expelled somehow, and an attitude of "heck, I'm hard to hurt anyway, may as well do somethin' dangerous!" I love how he pushes Eli to step outside his comfort zone and embrace part of himself that Eli himself doesn't even see.

This is a fun, light-hearted read that really made me want to go to the circus!!

I have to admit, I am the MOST excited to read Brighton's book - aerialists are my favorite part of the circus!!

This is the first book in the Black Cat Circus series, which is a set of interconnected standalone novels each by a different author and all centered around the Black Cat Circus. I can't wait for the rest of the series to come out so I can read more about Brighton, Coal, and Seven!!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are unbiased and my own.

What a wonderful introduction to the world of the Black Cat Circus. It's a low level paranormal romance where Drake comes back to the town he left behind ten years ago with the circus he joined. Eli is the journalist sent to cover it, something his colleagues see as a joke and beneath them and Eli is too quiet and shy to say anything.
They both feel something the moment they meet and it only builds up throughout the book. I love the boldness of Drake compared to the reserved nature of Eli and then how their relationship brings Eli out of his shell, like the two men together make each other better. Eli settles something in Drake, something he's been searching for for years. He's had it, in part, when taking on the daredevil stunts for the circus and riding at high speeds on his motorbike but, with Eli, his dragon is content. Their attraction and feelings shine throughout the story and you can't help but fall in love with them and the world that had been created for this multi author series. I can't wait to read more from the other characters that we meet.
A really great low angst romance with a wonderful introduction to this found family of the Black Cat Circus.

This is the first in the interconnected Black Cat Circus series written by different authors. It did such a good job of setting up the circus and characters, which can't have been easy.

I liked both Eli and Drake, it was such a joy to see Eli blooming through the course of the book and finding his confidence more. I like that Drake was able to give him that, just through seeing him as the amazing person he was and giving him that boost to be able to stand up against his horrible boss and co-workers. Drake I liked too, I love the idea of his heritage, and the moving tattoo idea was great too. I loved that the two parts of Drake's personality both fell for Eli at the same time. It's fast, fated mates and it all happens within a couple of days really, but I was okay with that as it didn't feel rushed even though it was so quick. There's a lot of chemistry and heat between them too, and they really suited each other.

The supporting cast of characters are good too, I already know we will get Coal, Brighton and Sev's stories and I can't wait for those. This was a fun, hot, light and short(ish) read and I'm here for more.

I received an ARC and this was my honest review.

Disclaimer: I received a free arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The Daredevil is a story about Drake, who perfrorms in the Black Cat Circus, and Eli, a journalist, who is tasked to write a piece on the circus.

Meeting Drake, Eli is immediately charmed by him and they romance begins. But Drake has a little secret that resides inside him.

Includes: found family, supernatural beings, fated mates and bj on a ferris wheel.

I usually really like Duckie’s books and the characters she creates, but I just don’t vibe this one.

Drake and Eli meet, they immediately fall for each other and a really big chunk of this book is about them banging each other. I couldn’t connect with the characters and never really got into the story.

I also really don’t get, why at the beginning while talking about his secret, Drake talks about his secret as him, so we don’t know, what the secret is, but then it’s revealed without any fanfare. We could honestly just been told at the beginning, it wouldn’t make a difference.

I didn’t hate this book, but I also didn’t love it so 3*. Love bank romance series is still the superior series by Duckie and one I’ll always recommend.

What do you get when a shy journalist meets a Daredevil?

Fireworks!!

I can't even begin to tell you how amazing this book is. The characters are all so unique, the plot is attention grabbing and Duckie's easter egg and mention of her other book. Loved it.

When Drake opened up about his past, ugh! My heart. It was so heartwarming to see him show a side of himself that no one has truly seen before. To learn how he felt growing up and how he found his family at the BCC. It was so nice to see the shy side of man who's life was in the limelight.

And Eli. Sweet, shy Eli. A man who spent his life trying to go unseen. A man who was afraid of trying something a little bold or crazy because of what might happen. A man who saw beauty in the world through the lens of his camera. I adored the bold side Drake brought out in Eli and the way Eli accepted Drake even after learning what Drake truly was.

Another great story from Duckie.

I'll never look at a Ferris wheel the same way again.

I really enjoyed this. It's basically Drake going back to where he grew up (in foster care) and facing that unpleasant past and Eli, who just wants to blend into the background and not create waves while hating his life with his boss and coworkers who overlook/mock him and his parents who treat him like he's 12. He takes a chance on Drake, the ultimate daredevil and both find a better life. It's paranormal, Drake is a half-blood dragon (who can't shift), all of the circus people are some kind of paranormal and it shakes Eli up at first given he's human, but there are some threads that lead from their past to their present. I have a thing for circuses and the description of Drake on the wheel of death gave me anxiety, just like that act does in real life. It's the ultimate found family book with a naughty kitten who seems to be interfering in people's lives but no one is sure how.

It doesn't have tons of drama. There's no forced separations or killer out to get one of them, just two people growing and realizing they have to break out of their ruts to find love and happiness.

Circus setting? MLM? Found family? Opposites attract? Little angst?

What is not to love?

(Spoiler free ARC review.) 4.5

I always find Duckie's work to include the sweetest and most wholesome relationships without fail. They are fast-paced romances which I understand isn't for everyone but I would still always recommend as I used to think they weren't for me and here I am: obsessed. Especially this masterpiece of a book. It pulls you in straight away and keeps you in with its magic and incredible scenes. The chemistry between the two main characters also really came through. The spicy scenes are also done in such a loving, non-cringey, or forced way which I think is rare in many modern books, especially amongst mlm.

In brief, I really loved the setting of this book and the pure unbridled wholesomeness of the relationship. I think these two things are such strengths of this author that are even unmatched by some of the most popular authors.

Sweet & sexy opposites attract MM PNR

When teenage Drake got expelled from school, he ran away from foster care to join the circus. Ten years later, he's returning as The Daredevil of the Black Cat Circus, now understanding the dragon that is a part of himself.

Eli is a journalist more comfortable behind the camera lens than talking to people - or standing up for himself. When his colleagues steal his stories and his boss assigns him to cover the circus visiting town, it's hard to see it as a good thing. But then the magic of the Black Cat Circus starts to suck him in and he meets Drake, the Daredevil. But Drake has a secret and will Eli stick around when he finds out that Drake has the soul of a dragon?

This is an opposites attract, missed opportunity, contemporary PNR with some MM spice. Really sweet, these two are adorable and I love Eli's character arc in particular as he comes out of his shell for Drake.

In this you'll find: MM romance with some spice; gay MCs; contemporary near fantasy; a found family of a circus with a variety of non-human members; a foster care survivor; a shy MC with anxiety; a bouncy golden retriever puppy daredevil with the soul of a dragon; some slight exhibitionism; motorbikes and human cannons; and a HEA.

Magic with a side of steamy sweetness

Drake AKA Daredevil is a circus stuntman and Eli is a reporter sent to do a page filler piece.
A chance meeting between the two has Drake realizing they're meant to be together.
Eli is sweet, shy and a bit timid.
As they get to know one another he slowly blossoms and begins to explore outside of his comfort zone with Drake's amazing support.
Drake for his part is fearful that once Eli finds out what he's hiding that it might spell the end before anything has even begun.
This was a really sweet romance with two men who just happen to be each other's perfect match.
The world building was amazing and I absolutely loved the found family aspect.

I loved everything about this and look forward to reading more of the series. This is the kind of paranormal I like to read. Shapeshifters/weres are so prevalent in this sub-genre that it's like authors have forgotten there are other ways to depict the paranormal. Also, the fact that there's no angst, no break-up before the HEA is a BLESSING! I much prefer to read this than some miscommunication leading to a split before they get back together. That is completely overdone and cliched. The intimate scenes were steamy, just as I prefer.

Both MCs are wonderful. I loved the idea of brash, daredevil Drake ends up with anxiety-ridden, timid Eli, bringing Eli out of his shell more. It's an adorable pairing and would love to see more like this.

This was a new to me author and I loved it!

Drake and Eli’s story was so cute.
Both of them are lost and just coasting through life getting by never feeling any fulfillment. Until their paths cross and everything changes.

Drake doesn’t fully understand what he is, so he doesn’t realize what’s going on. All he knows is he’s drawn to Eli and the need he feels has to be met.

Eli goes through life being invisible, then he’s introduced to the life of the DareDevil and he realizes what he’s missing.

Little did these two know that their paths had crossed before, many years before. They missed out on so many years together simply because they were both hiding in the shadows of their own lives.

Once these two come together, their lives immediately change for the better. Drake becomes more settled and less anxious and agitated, Eli gains the confidence he’s never had before. Together they complete each other and bring out everything they’ve had hidden deep down.

Their interest stems from raw need they feel towards each other, that neither seems to understand. A bond they both fully embrace. Their relationship is raw and sweet, and the big bad dare devil is such a softy for Eli.

I loved everything about their story and can’t wait to jump into the other cirque members stories!

Duckie is so good at sweet contemporary romances, with low to no angst and great chemistry. This one has a sprinkling of paranormal and she knocked it out of the park. It’s a great introduction to the Black Cat Circus and it’s host of unique performers. These two main characters will capture your heart. Especially shy, photographer Eli. His anxiety at the beginning, I could feel it. But his coming into his own skin, his comfortability with Drake, was so great to see. It was incredibly endearing and my favorite part of the book. Drake was so fun to read about. I could just picture him showing off and hanging and swinging from everything. Cute. I’m excited to see what the other authors will do with their circus characters.

This book, it has been something I’ve been itching to read as soon and the series was reviled. And oh my gods I did not disappoint at all! Like it was so good!

I have been obsessed with circus’ my whole life. (Never been lol but obsessed) and to read something that revolved around it? So freaking amazing! Add the supernatural aspect to it? Uh yes! Add the spice? Uh double yes!

This was my first read by this author and I will for sure be reading more. It filled my heart with so much joy. Filled my brain with so many questions! Most of which are about peanut the cat lol it was just amazing and it took my breath away. Honestly.

I can’t wait to read the next one!

Adorable Cute Hot must read!

Ok I have been a bit skeptical of paranormal books But this one caught my heart. Eli a journalist that never spoke up for himself was always afraid and never wanted to be seen he hid behind his camera is given the assignment to cover The Black Cat Circus. And his journey begins He catches the eye of the Daredevil Drake and the bond is formed in the most amazing way. Now Eli is Marshmallow a Dragon tattoo that loves being cuddled. I have so much I can say about this sweet, adorable, hot MM Romance PNR but I don't want to spoil it.
It made me feel good, laugh and fall in love with these two characters.
Well done Duckie . Must read Author and book.
