Trilogy of the Magi

Rate this book
“There were many other signs that Jesus worked..., but they are not recorded in this book.” — John 20:30 Even in our modern world, wise men and women of all ages still seek Him. Trilogy of the Magi is a book for all seasons. In an inspirational trilogy, Kathryn Muehlheausler shares three stories of the royal magi of Christmas lore. Decades after Assyrian royal Melchior interacts with Herod, crowned in Rome as the King of the Jews, he is compelled to follow the star to Bethlehem and into danger. Balthazar’s adventurous life continues two decades after following the star when he is captured by a Bedouin tribesman who owes his life to Herod’s son. At first a prisoner and then regarded as a wise man, Balthazar experiences a crisis of faith after he impacts lives while revealing events in the magi’s travels and what they learned about the early life of Jesus. Thirty-three years after Dismas robs a family escaping to Egypt, King Gaspar and his servant Raheeb ponder if the man has fulfilled the child’s destiny. At the foot of Calvary, the angry criminal Daniel jibes at Gaspar though each needs help. Their fates intertwine in a desperate escape from Jerusalem. Weeks later, a shepherd with scars enters their camp; all experience an epiphany of faith. Trilogy of the Magi is a beautiful and intriguing retelling of Christ’s life through three tales that offer unique perspectives of biblical figures during decades of events in the royal magi’s lives. “A King’s Story is a beautifully written tale…a truly captivating, inspirational adventure ...” — Joseph F. Classen, author of Hunting for God, Fishing for the Lord

There were many other signs that Jesus worked...but, they are not recorded in tis book.
John 20:30

Peopled with both historical and fictional characters who might have lived and acted the events of A King's Story, this novel provides a unique twist to events in the New Testament. Gaspar, youngest of the Magi who followed the star to Bethlehem, and his servant Raheeb search to find if "the man has fulfilled the child's destiny." At the bottom of Calvary, Gaspar's life becomes intwined with that of the fictional brother of Dismas "The Good Thief."
Author and priest Reverend Joseph Classen penned the following: A King's Story is a beautifully written tale which incorporates a wonderful weaving of Biblical characters. Muehlheausler's attention to detail and obvious research help to firmly construct a truly captivating, inspirational adventure for the reader to embark upon.
Graduating Magna Cum Laude from SLU, Muehlheausler followed another love, teaching. Years later, on two separate occasions while driving to work, the idea for A Kings Story came to her. The second time, she decided to find a Bible for research and to read The Robe to immerse herself in the historical period. At noon that day, she walked up to the center table in a library where books were being given away: Side-by-side lay both books

I met this author several months ago when I stopped at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri on my way home from Springfield to the St Louis area. She was selling her books and autographed one for me. I finally got around to reading it and found it very compelling and I read it quickly. I am not sure where she got her information for the three wise men but she wove an excellent story. Due to the fact, that she lives in the St Louis area, I hope to reach out to her and talk more.

I wish I could give this book a higher rating—a Catholic author writing a book about an event beloved by Christians makes me want this book to succeed.

But it’s just not interesting reading.

It may find its niche among a non-Christian reader, who is interested in the story of the birth of Jesus and the subsequent visit of the magi, because she’s never heard it before.

I enjoy the chance to ponder whether these fictional events may have been close to the facts. The trilogy is full of history and culture as well as vivid imagery and unique descriptive words (some which I had to look up). An enjoyable series of stories to consider as a follower of Jesus.

I really enjoyed the three stories. Each puts the reader in place and time and come together well. Interesting to think about the story in three different periods of time.
