I borrowed a fun thing my girl does with her husband and let my husband choose my next read. I want to say the story is very well written and it held my attention at least for the first 30% but I struggled to finish the rest of the book. The premise of the story is Cristian is a 600 year old vampire who learns of a plot with another vampire faction to basically start a war with the witches which would boil over into the human world. Samantha is an investigative journalist and discovers there's more to the murder mystery she's researching than meets the eye. She ends up crossing paths with Cristian and her life begins to change.
I was cool with her learning she actually has witch heritage and latent abilities but I think what really made the story a bit underwhelming was that she is supposedly the reincarnated version of Cristian's basically soul mate who he never actually got married to and had to watch her fall in love and marry someone else. A vampire and a witch being in love is like a very bad prophecy and so I had a problem with him mostly seeing Sage (his ex) in Samantha. I wasn't convince he wasn't falling in love with her because of her current version and not her past and several times she had to ask him if he was looking at her or Sage. Speaking of Samantha, she made a lot of very bad decisions and like I know you suddenly forgot about your journalism job and want to be in the heat of things but she's not capable yet. And I also felt the "good guys" were the cause of a lot of interactions with the villain that they should have seen a mile away and could have easily solved.
I won't be reading the next book but this was a a nice getaway into a world of vampires when these stories are so few and far between.
I really wanted to like this book, but it just kept tweaking my suspension of disbelief so much, I couldn't handle it. The concept was solid, even the plot was, but at every turn these characters are doing things that make no sense. An investigative reporter who doesn't think to check property records. A vampire who is "out of touch" with the modern world, thrown into New York City and having no problem adapting to all that entails. There was so much ridiculousness that I couldn't just sit and enjoy the story. Disappointing.
