My hunter becomes my saviour… He is the rising star in the world of cricket; every girl's dream, but my nightmare, and he is out for blood. He threatens me. He humiliates me. He turns my moment of shame into a viral sensation. Then I come to know the truth underneath all that venom. And everything changes.
Ved My prey becomes my solace… She is the coach’s daughter, and she is on the verge of destroying something I hold dear. She hates me. She challenges me. She fights back. And I can go to any extent to stop her. But that was before I fell for her fatal charm. Now I want her at all costs.
I did not vibe with this one. The thing that made me dnf is a side character bullying another side character so badly that she was shaking and crying and he thought it was totally cool. Nope.
I think this has been by far the most charming slow-burn romance that I have read in an Indian setting. The couple has so many push and pulls that the romance only comes to its full fruition in the end and I loved how the two characters were bullheaded and kept pushing each other over the edge because it made for an interesting read. It was like watching an MMA show from the sidelines. One of the other things that I loved about the book is how many sub-tracks it has because it gives the book a lot more depth. So the book not only has the two characters and their dynamics in focus but a whole lot of other things that are happening parallelly and in the background. If the author decides to create a universe out of this book, she would never run out of ideas. I was so awed and inspired by how the seeds of so many subplots were inserted into the book without complicating it.
For example, there are of course the four boys(club 4) then there are other side characters like the girl’s best friend and her best friend then there is this whole father-daughter thing, the whole Singhania family dynamics, in fact even the past/ back story of our characters is worth an epic series in itself. So I loved how in a short span, the book has so much going for it that if explored it can create a whole universe out of it.
I loved the romance because it had a natural arc to it. The enemies to friends had strong reasoning and base because of which you can see and see sense in their actions. Plus it is fun to see the game in action. I was a fan of our central character because she remained true to her character till the last and wasn’t mopping the floor with her jaw just because the guy was Adonis’s incarnation.
Well, the book is a homage to cricket and it bleeds blue at every chance it could get but even if you are clueless about the sport then too you can enjoy it with full fun as I did.
I don’t believe this is a quick in and quick out read because with so much packed into one book, you might want to stay for the ride and pay your full attention and you will end up giving it without even realising.
if you have read the book then you might understand my yearning when I say that I can’t wait to read Playing Hard ( the second in the series) because that book is all about Kabir and you can’t deny that the guy had piqued enough of our curiosity in the first book that we can’t deny an opportunity to know more about this guy who is both hot and cold.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the book plays on the enemies-to-lovers trope and is done with some mighty and thick plot lines that give so much depth and substance to the whole book. So basically the book plays with a little bit of everything, daddy issues, sibling rivalry, family dynamics, broken home syndromes, love, passion, friendship, cricket and good old college days. So it has got a whole bouquet of elements which I felt was one of the best parts of the book. It has depth to it.
🌟🌟🌟Playing Rough: Enemies to Lovers, College Romance (Marwah Series Book 1)🌟🌟🌟
This was a completely entertaining read that had every emotion in it, be it anger, agony, happiness, revenge, confusion, guilt, etc.
The story was about Ved Singhaniya, the hotshot cricket captain of his college team and not less than a celebrity, and Jiya Kelkar, a strongheaded, smart, and beautiful newly joined student who also happened to be the daughter of the college cricket coach.
They had an instant connection, but the start of Jia's journey in college was not like any other student's, and because of that, Ved was hell-bent on troubling and humiliating her.
Most of the time, Ved was a typical playboy type with a bad boy image, but there was his other side that wanted to protect Jia and keep her safe. Jia's character was very strong; she was clear from the start in her thoughts.
In spite of their rivalry, the chemistry between them was always on fire, and I loved reading their interactions because they showed their attraction towards each other, yet they behaved like rivals and were continuously fighting with their own feelings and inner turmoils.
Also, Ved's past was completely unpredictable, and his relationship, especially with his elder brother Karthik, was intriguing to read, and their conversations were one of the highlights of this story.
I would have loved to read more about Jia and her father's relationship; I felt there was more to Coach Dharam's past.
I liked how the author wrote this story by keeping cricket as the centre of attraction and the way she wrote vivid and detailed descriptions of the cricket match and other locations, which added a thrill to the story and made it entertaining and enjoyable to read.
Also, Karthik's character was quite intriguing and interesting; I also liked the Club 4 bonding, and I loved Chirpy Navya's character a lot.
Playing Rough by Meenu Pillai was such a delightful read! It’s an enemies-to-lovers college romance set against the backdrop of Marwah University's cricket team, and I was completely hooked from the very first page. The story revolves around Jia Kelkar, a fiery and bold girl who arrives at Marwah University, only to find herself at odds with Ved Singhania, the star cricketer. Their rivalry is intense, their banter sharp, and the chemistry between them is electric.
One of the things I loved most about this book was how naturally the romance developed. It’s a slow burn filled with moments of genuine conflict, but also surprising vulnerability. Both Jia and Ved are strong-willed characters, and watching their animosity gradually evolve into something deeper felt incredibly authentic. It wasn’t rushed or forced, which made their connection all the more believable.
Meenu Pillai’s writing style is so effortless and engaging. She has a knack for balancing witty dialogue, emotional depth, and humor without going overboard. The sports element of the story was a major highlight for me. Even though I’m not a cricket aficionado, the way she described the matches and training scenes made them thrilling and immersive. It’s not just a backdrop; it plays a significant role in the story and character development, especially for Ved.
I also appreciated how well the side characters were fleshed out. Ved's friendship with Club 4 felt genuine, adding warmth and humor to the narrative, while Karthik and Navya each had their own unique personalities that really brought the campus setting to life.
Overall, Playing Rough is a fantastic mix of romance, drama, and sports. If you love strong female leads, passionate love-hate dynamics, and a touch of emotional depth, this book is definitely worth picking up. Meenu Pillai's writing truly brings the story to life, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next—especially since this is just the first book in the Marwah Series!
Witty, engossing and packed with enough heat and banter. .must read.
This college sports romance is loaded with chemistry, passion, wit, and a touch of darkness that teeters on the edge of sports bully romance. Once you dive into it, there is no looking back. You are sucked into the world of Marwah's bad boys and their cocky charm. I devoured the whole thing in one day. Ved is the fire, while Jia is the inferno. Ved is a cricket champion of the college and Jia is the new admission and the daughter of the cricket coach. I love this trope. Their bond flits between love and hate giving a glimpse of possesive Ved and Stubborn Jia. This enemies to lovers story unfolded in a perfect way. Kudos to Meenu's crisp writing style. Ved and Jia both are so blatantly honest and genuine. Despite having affluent parents, they are grounded and value friendships even when life had handed them a bad hand in terms of their personal lives. Fast-paced, precise, and spot-on storytelling makes reading experience smooth. You can visualize and feel the scenes as just a movie. Along with Ved, his hot Club4 friends have captured my heart as well. Not only that, but I am also quite excited about the story of Jia's cousin Navya. Maybe Ved's brother Kartik will get his story too. His character was so intriguing. The supporting characters played crucial parts in elevating the story. With these swoon-worthy cricketers, Meenu has opened up an entirely new realm of romance. This was a treat to read for someone who enjoys cricket like I do. Though I am not versed with cricket's technicalities, I was able to understand all the jargon and visualize the game situations in addition to all the other things. Cheers to the splendid beginning of the Marwah Series. I loved it and am excited to read the upcoming books in the series.
"Playing safe was overrated. One must play rough in order to push destiny to fulfil one’s dreams"
I started the Marwah Series in reverse, but after devouring Kabir and Mahee's story, I couldn't resist reading the entire series. This series is an addictive and a real page turner that masterfully combines the themes of love and friendship
In "Playing Rough", the first installment of the Marwah Series, Jia shines as a perfect combination of sass, determination, and vulnerability, making her relatable and lovable. Her desire to follow her heart, just like her mother, is one of the most attractive qualities of her character.
Ved Singhania, the charismatic cricket team captain, defies expectations with his unwillingness to join the family business. His passion for cricket is commendable, and the spark between him and Jia is undeniable. The initial war between Jia and Club 4, a group of four unbreakable friends, ignites a fiery attraction between Ved and Jia.
What stands out is the author's skillful portrayal of Club 4's bond, making their friendship envy-worthy. Yash, in particular, steals the show with his humor and intelligence. The sports management class entry scene is hilariously memorable.
Karthik and Ved's banter adds humor and lightness. The most lovely thing is how Jia's presence soothes Ved's emotional turmoil, making her an irreplaceable part in his life.
Overall, The Marwah Series is a must-read for romance and sports fiction fans. With its lovable characters, funny conversations, and emotional scenes this series will keep you wanting more.

This is the 1st book in the Marwah series. I enjoyed reading this book. The writing is simple and easy to read. The chemistry between the protagonist is sizzling hot. Loved the bond of friendship between Club4. The characterization is done wonderfully, specially Ved and Karthik. How a young mind is brainwashed to trouble their own sibling was heartbreaking. I felt the ending was a little incomplete as i wanted to know what happens to the business and Raj Singhania Overall a good read. Looking forward to reading the other books in the series
Talking about the blurb of the book, it is the story of a girl, Jia, who lost her single mother and had to come to her father. She has not been on good terms with her father since he left her mother because of his craze for cricket. She met a boy named Ved in her new college, and instantly, they are nemesis.
Now both hate each other and like each other, Will they share their feeling with each other or just live in their lies of hating each other?
Hmmm….. wanna know, then read this book.
My take about the book is that the writing style is simple, and one can easily connect to the characters of the story. The Club4 intro is nicely put. Language is beginner-friendly. While reading the book, I felt like I was reading a script of Karan Johar’s next movie project. Yes, this book gives that kind of vibe.
There are some points I didn’t like in the book. First, I felt like it could take about 20 more pages. The ending kind of felt like a rushed one, where some truth bombs needed to be faced, but there was no talk about that. I wanted to know more about Navya’s part. But She also got a rushed end.
Overall, a nice read, Congratulations to the author.
Playing Rough by Meenu Pillai is an engaging novel that explores the intense relationship between Jia Kelkar and Ved Singhania. The two main characters initially despise each other, but as the story progresses, they discover a powerful attraction that neither of them can resist. The novel is filled with witty dialogue, laugh-out-loud moments, and plenty of romantic tension.
The author does an excellent job of creating complex, multi-dimensional characters that readers can relate to and root for. Jia is a strong, independent woman who is not afraid to stand up for herself, while Ved is a brooding, passionate man who is struggling to find his place in the world. Their love story is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, and readers will find themselves rooting for them from start to finish.
Overall, Playing Rough is a well-written, entertaining novel that is sure to captivate fans of romance, college dramas, and enemies-to-lovers stories alike. The book's engaging plot, relatable characters, and witty writing make it a must-read for anyone looking for a fun, fast-paced, and emotionally satisfying read.
•What PLAYED well? Bollywood lovers assemble! Playing Rough is a book for all the hopeless romantics out there looking for a HEA. Though it strongly reminded me of the Off Campus series but with cricket, it had better banter and pop references than the former. At several points, I found myself wondering if Karan Johar was somehow involved with this book.😂 There was zero studying happening with maximum partying and because I could not relate to that AT ALL, it made for a greattr escape! Easy to read, accesible writing and a good ensemble of characters make it an enjoyable read. The plot is equally cheesy and layered, something I really liked! I loved the naive, morally strong but courageous FMC against the rich uni setting.
•The ROUGH? The romance could have been developed better for me. The 'I don't want to live without you' happened way too fast. Plus, Ved's constant 'I'm a monster, run' annoyed me a bit.
Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and flew through this one in about 5 hours. Looking forward to the next installment of the Marwah world.
Playing rough is a book that portrays a love-hate relationships. So this book was set at Marwah University. Jia joins this University where his father is a celebrity coach. Jia is fun, loving, witty, and beautiful in her way. But in her journey, she met Ved Singhania. Ved is our team’s star player, but he carries a lot of negative feelings for Jia. But Jim fought back all the bullying and hurdles. Ved likes the challenges thrown his way. If previously he was occupied by Jia, now he is obsessed. So, what is brewing between Jia and Ved?
I am a big fan of slow-burn romance reading. And I took my sweet time with this book, the firing chemistry between Ved and Jia was perfect. The transformation of both the characters and how their bond developed over time was portrayed beautifully. This sports romance from enemies to lovers was definitively thrilling. This book will be a direct fixer to your heart. So, this is your hint to pick up this read and enjoy your roller coaster ride of emotions.

After losing her mother, Jia moves to Marwah University to live with her father, who is the coach of the university's cricket team. At Marwah, she meets Ved, a rising cricket star. The characters are well-developed, and their emotions and actions feel genuine. The writing style is easy to read and engaging, making it difficult to put the book down.

Book review 🤎 Author-MEENU PILLAI Pages-304 Language-English
Playing Rough by Meenu Pillai is a intense, fiesty, bickering, cute and sizzling warm love story between ved and jia. In this story, jia is determined individual who followed her own way t9 fulfilment.A seductive and intelligent woman who is adept in making someone stop talking.Even though the toughest guy is speechless in the presence of her beauty and sharp mind. This college romance with cricket as the main plot made me read it in one go and i truly enjoyed.I lost a solid night's sleep beacuse of it but it was well worth it.The dramatic development of their love story from abhorrence to lust was like riding a Ducati down a motorway, accelerating and unsure. Overall beautiful intense story,i am hoping for more romances in near future under marwah series.Go for it !
Love stories revolving around two enemies falling head over heels for each other are nothing new. I have seen many movies revolving around the same genre. But the reason I fell into this book and definitely will hold it dear for the long run is the beauty of the author's writing style and the expression worth indulging in.
Playing Rough is the story of Jia and Ved. Ved is a vibrant cricketer who overcame all the odds to brighten the future. On the other hand is Jia, his coach's daughter whom he hates equivalently as she does.
Two people with contradictory thoughts and emotions are deemed to fall in love by destiny. But will it be just a leap of faith or something more than that? Enjoy this love story which has its own shades of emotions to please the reader of romantic fiction like me.
“From day one my feelings for you were always extreme. Extreme hate, extreme annoyance to extreme liking and now it’s…love,”
Just reading the words gave me goosebumps. The simple words describe the emotional journey of a passionate partner.
After reading the repetitive themes from the romance genre I was looking for something different, explicit, and simple yet heart-touching and this story came to me. And the journey of a star player and the coach's daughter took my heart.
Their attraction is so strong and visible yet they behave as if they hate each other's existence. By constantly denying the chemistry they made me lose my temper at one point in time but later the way it ended I was all gone. The aggression, the confidence, the self-esteem, and the fierceness, all these qualities made these two my favorite couple.
Jia's parents seperated when she was just 5. Now she is 20 and after her mother's demise she moved to Mumbai to live with her estranged father who is a celebrity cricket coach in Marwah University. She joins Marwah University and comes across Ved Singhania.
Ved and Jia clash again and again, with Enemies to lovers trope this sports romance has many aspects to it like friendship, sibling rivalry, deceit etc. I liked all characters especially Jia and how she stood against bullying. Ved is grumpy and aloof with troubled past.
I have read all books by writer and her writing has come so far from her first book. I like Meenu's writing style and her similies are interesting to read.
Looking forward to read Yash, Kabir and Mayank's stories.

Overall, Playing Rough is a compelling story that will keep you smiling 😊 and rooting for Ved and Jia till the last page.
A lovely start to a new series! So looking forward to rest of the stories, especially that of Kabir
Now coming to Ved and Jia, they were both pure gold and oh fire! Loved their chemistry, their banter, their fight. Ved was a typical bully who was trying to protect the ones he cared for, while Jia fell into the situation not knowing the background at all. She just went with her gut feeling and ended up being their enemy. The story is on point, good plot, and crisp narration and is very well written. Kudos, to the author for yet another win with this book!
This enemies-to-lovers story revolves around Jia and Ved, who meet in college. When you pit two strong-willed characters together, crashes and clashes are bound to happen. There is a lot of new adult angst, rivalries, and family hangovers. Well crafted and wholesome.
I love Meenu's style of writing and the way she present her characters. The sarcasm and humour laced narrative style makes for an engaging read all the time. She has set the ball rolling for an interesting array of characters to grace the Marwah series. Watch out for more.
Tension. Temptation. Turmoil. Playing Rough is a gritty, slow-burn romance where love hits hard and emotions run deep. With flawed characters and sizzling chemistry, this one’s for readers who crave intensity with heart.
Playing Rough, the first book in the Marwah Series by Meenu Pillai, is a rollercoaster of emotions that will leave you breathless. With an enemies-to-lovers plotline set in the world of sports, the story of Jia and Ved is both exhilarating and heartwarming.
Pillai does an excellent job of creating complex characters that feel like real people. Watching two strong-willed characters clash and eventually fall for each other is a joy to read.
The sports scenes in the book are expertly crafted and will have you on the edge of your seat. Whether it's a nail-biting cricket match or a high-stakes face-off between our main characters, the tension and excitement are palpable.
While the language of the book is sometimes a bit mundane and could benefit from some editing, the overall story is so compelling that it's easy to overlook. If you're a fan of enemies-to-lovers romance or sports stories, then Playing Rough is definitely worth checking out.
'Playing Rough' is my second book from the author, and as anticipated, I enjoyed reading this novel like I did reading Meenu Pillai's novel -' Deception Game'.
Characters are sketched well, the storyline is intriguing, and the narration is simple. The story starts with Jia shifting to live under the care of her father Dharam Kelkar, a famous cricketer and now a winning coach. Unknowingly she goes against Club 4, the winning cricket team of her new college. Then follows a series of brawls between Jia and the Club 4 team - Ved, Yash, Kabir, and Mayank. In this row, Ved and Jia are stumped on warm feelings growing for each other. It is interesting to read when and how their fight turns into love and how they strive to sustain their love. To conclude, Playing Rough is an easy-to-read love story that you will revel in love.
