Finally the tide turns!

Great continuation, and some really fantastic character moments here.

Plenty of action but finally the carnage is settling into a bit more hope for the good guys.

Loved the developments here so very keen for the conclusion!

A cool followup issue but not as impactful as the last issue. Everything feels like it's tiding up too quickly. This is not my favorite of the DCeased series but still entertaining. A 3 out of 5.

I cannot tell you the sigh of relief I felt at the end of this issue, what a wild packed ride. At times it feels like everything is moving so fast but I’m still having such a great time that it doesn’t even matter. Additionally I feel like I haven’t pointed this out enough and this issue is a great showcase of my point…but this series has handled the super sons better than the mainline. There…I said it! This is amazing Jon Kent and Damian Wayne representation as, even though it’s an end of the world fast track, they do an amazing job taking over the roles their father’s had to lead the human race. As we jump into this issue everything rests on the battle of Earth 2 and the violence is kicked up a notch by Lobo arriving and immediately skewering lightray’s head. On the surface the heroes are fighting without mercy…until Scott came across his anti living son, it doesn’t appear as though the man who can escape anything can escape the love he has for his child. But then we cut over the dramatic end of the last issue as Spectre Alfred stands before the hole he put in Highfather’s head. Only to find he hasn’t saved the day an Damian was infected before highfather was taken down. Cassie flies over just in time as Damian begins to transform, but he makes a final plea to Alfred…don’t tear them apart, save them as only he has he has the power to do that now. The loss of their loved ones only worked to grow the resolve of our heroes, they fought even harder and Alfred believed Erebos could sense that as suddenly the anti life forces already here got reinforcements in the form of darkseid, supergirl, and the yellow lantern corps…and warworld.

It all rests here, either hope is completely taken out of the universe or it has a chance to truly fight back. And faced with all of this overwhelming power…Spectre leaves, as he understands batman was right and he is needed elsewhere. But the fighting goes on, Jon rushes to take on Darkseid himself with brainiac joining in for a hope that their combined might could overcome darkseid. But brainiac couldn’t foresee the corrupted mother box getting shoved into his head to take over his operating system…but cyborg could. But brainiac did not focus his death on the heroes of earth 2, instead he retreated back to his ship to focus on all of the lives contained in his stolen cities. Every city would have fallen…if not for cyborg. Cyborg took brainiac down and as the two fought he quickly realized that brainiac can’t break into his systems…but cyborg can break into his. Suddenly cyborg infected brainiac back, taking completely control of his technology, his ship, and all of the knowledge contained inside of it!! And with all of that intelligence…he had an idea.

During the battle Jon suddenly swapped out with Shazam Cass in the fight against darkseid, but he was not fleeing the battle as he was needed elsewhere. On the other side of the planet warlord’s energy began to grow in a cannon targeting Earth 2 and as it unleashed its firepower to destroy the planet…Jon stood in the way to our back and destroy warworld in the process! As it blew up Jon was knocked back to Earth, but as he fell a thousand Kryptonians rose to the fight behind him! Cyborg went to the bottle city of Kandor and in moments reverse engineered Brainiac’s technology to restore it and provide the with a city full of Kryptonians ready to soak up the yellow sun and join the fight. Jon was caught by his father who couldn’t be more proud of who his son had become.

At that moment the spectre also returned, he raced across space to Earth where he has now returned with tons of cargo crates strapped to him, all filled with the cure. We see as Leslie and Damian were both cured and Damian couldn’t be prouder that Alfred listened to him. But there is one cure that was especially important they deliver, to one other than darkseid! It was a bit tough to break through his skin but Lobo actually had an idea, he took the cure in his hand and shoved his hand in Darkseid’s mouth. As Darkseid literally bit hit hand off and swallowed it, the cure was allowed to enter his system and suddenly darkseid is once more. He was confused as to what happened but quickly understood that he was used by the entity known as Erebos…even darkseid was made a pawn and because of Clark Kent’s compassion arching that he be cured instead of killed…they gained a terrifying ally.

The last issue of DCeased: War of the Undead Gods is one that I think readers of the series are going to remember for a while; because it was pretty wild. We've had our heroes have to adapt over the course of the DCeased franchise run, changing into new versions of themselves or taking on new identities. Black Canary became a Green Lantern and is now Green Canary, Damian Wayne became Batman, Cassandra Cain gained the powers of Shazam. Things have taken some wild turns from the Earth-1 universe we all know and love. But perhaps the most unforeseen, and most surprising change came at the end of the last issue, where Alfred Pennyworth became the human host for the spirit of God's vengeance. Yes, Alfred became the Spectre!

This issue picks up where that one left off, with Earth-2 (the planet, not the universe) under attack from the assembled forces of Erebos and its infection. The New Gods, Thanagarians, the Sinestro Corps, and the Forces of Apocalypse, along with anyone else infected along the way, are laying siege to the human colony world. Things aren't going well, heroes are dying, allies are being lost, and it looks like the planet is about to fall. You'd think that this would be the moment when Alfred, now infused with the power of the Spectre, would lay the hurt down on the monsters coming for the people he loves. But no, after a plea from Damian, who's just lost his mind to the infection, to find another way, Alfred flies off into space; seemingly running away.

Following this, Jon Kent and Brainiac try to take down Darkseid, but the anti-life infection manages to get inside the Coluan and turn one of the best allies the heroes have against them. Rather than attacking the planet, however, he heads back to his ship, where he plans to destroy all of the bottle cities held within. This is where Cyborg is able to confront him, and overwhelms his systems. Cyborg takes the Brainiac powers and abilities into himself; giving us another new version of a hero. Using the knowledge that Cyborg has now gained, he heads to Earth-2, where he frees the inhabitants of the bottle city of Kandor, unleashing an army of Kryptonians to help fight against the forces of evil.
This is when Alfred returns, with masses of the cure in tow. The heroes begin to administer the cure to the infected, including Darkseid. Upon learning that he was being used as a puppet by an even more evil entity Darkseid joins out heroes in their mission to destroy Erebos.

So, a lot happens this issue. This is perhaps one of my biggest concerns about this book. It feels like a lot of stuff is being crammed into a relatively short space. With only one issue left it seems like our heroes and their new allies are going to be taking the fight to the entity behind everything. But can that really be done in one issue? And on top of all that there's the fact that Darkseid is back, and how that's all going to work going forward. Things are either going to be hugely rushed in the final issue in order to put everything to bed, or this isn't going to get ended.
I wouldn't be surprised if the final issue of this series is just setting the stage for another series in the DCeased franchise, one where it will deal with Erebos directly. I'm not against that idea, and if anything I'm more for that than the book trying to wrap everything up in one issue. I'd like the series to try to take its time rather than rushing for a conclusion that will probably not feel all that satisfying. Make the last issue of this series this new group forming their plan, have them dealing with the losses they've suffered, the changes some of these characters have gone through, and the forming of an uneasy alliance with Darkseid; but have the Erebos stuff happen in a new series please.

DCeased has always done wild stuff, and a big part of the appeal of the series is that fact that it can do things like kill Bruce Wayne, make Alfred the Spectre, and annihilate the Green Lantern Corps and it have consequences because it's not part of the main continuity. It doesn't matter if the events of this book break the world, because it's not our world. Tom Taylor seems to do really well with these out of continuity books, and his best stuff comes when he's told 'go wild, do whatever'. Hopefully the sales have been high enough that DC will continue to let this happen, and that we won't have to try and end it all in the next issue.

The penultimate issue of the series sees a tolerable Lobo ( not among my favorite DC characters ) enter the fray to take down a turned Lightray, a turned Jacob take down his father Mr. Miracle, and Spectre/Alfred making a major decision that turns the tide of the war. Damian battles his turning.
Meantime, Jon and Brainiac tag team against Darkseid only to see Darkseid take down the super intelligent green alien turning him. Cyborg dashes Brainiac’s attempt to destroy the bottled cities on his ship and is able to revive all the Kryptonians and empower them including Superman.
Jon pushed back a ray from Warworld aimed at earth and survives while Darkseid himself is cured using Spectre/Alfred’s cure. Damian is cured. The good guys now have a ticked off Darkseid on their side to go against Erebos.

Perfect build up to the coming finale. Read right after #6 and it does make a difference not having the time gap between issues. Dceased is one of my all time favorite series.
