The New Olympus #3

Invoking Ruin

Rate this book
Dionysus has a choice: help his family bring down the impetuous goddess of ruin, or to continue to play the little puppet in her schemes. But he has his own plans for Atê.

Atê is on the run. She's kidnapped an amnesiac Dionysus, injured her sister, Lethe, and stolen the one weapon that can end all of god-kind. Now, all of Olympus is closing in on her, determined to bring her to heel for the sake of their own peace and comfort.

But Atê won't let them have her. Dionysus is hers for as long as he doesn't remember his divine identity, and she'll do anything to stay in the lead, even make a deal with the one goddess they're all afraid of.

All to keep him.

Invoking Ruin is a full-length, medium-burn, standalone fantasy romance with a guaranteed HEA. It contains steamy scenes and is an opposites attract romance. It is the third and final book in The New Olympus series. While it is a standalone, reading the previous books will provide the best reading experience.

Everything about this book was just so AMAZING. I absolutely adore Shoshana's characters. The angst and tension between Até and Dionysus made me SO giddy while reading this. I wasn't really sure of Até's at first when she appeared in Oblivion's River, but she honestly won me over the moment I dove into the story XD She's morally gray and I love how unapologetic she is.

Invoking Ruin was an intense ride from start to finish, and is seriously the one of the best conclusions I've ever read!!

I absolutely love the way the Shoshana Rain writes. This has been one of my favorite series since book one, and this new release didn't disappoint! Invoking ruin leans a little darker than the other two books in the series, in part to both of the deeply flawed (but in a good way) main characters. I absolutely love the way that Shoshana researches and what details she decides to put into the stories. Everything feels so natural and subtle.

It was a really refreshing take to have both the male main character as well at the female main character both be fairly morally grey. You usually see one or the other in this role and with this book, the dynamic flips throughout the story. I really liked seeing a female in the overprotective, hyper jealous, kidnap my lover type of obsession that usually reserved for the morally grey men.

The overarching story that occurs throughout the three-book series comes to a satisfying end. We get to see some really questionable family dynamics, which feels really on brand for Greek myth retellings. We also see some really unhealthy coping mechanisms, which also feels on brand for Greek myths. Notoriously, Shoshana writes, what some would call, "unlikable" female characters. I feel like her ability to write females with actual flaws tends to make them more relatable. It allows me to connect with the characters on a deeper level, and actually makes me care about where they end up at the end of the story.

As far as spice goes, it's pretty solid. Don't go in expecting a ton of heat. This is what I would consider a slow burn full of sexual tension, and the build-up is worth the wait. It's not super heavy on kink, but there is a real feeling of "angry sex" or "revenge play".

Overall, I'm really happy with the way this series ended. I loved the characters and the story and the heat. While part of me is sad to see it end, I know that I will forever be a Shoshana Rain reader, no matter what she writes.

Overall rating: 10/10
Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

This has been my favorite book in the series so far, which is crazy because of how much I loved Strife’s Apple! The gods and goddess are hilarious in their pettiness. I loved getting Ate’s perspective on the series of events that lead to her inevitable confrontation with the other gods and goddesses. I willingly got onto the rollercoaster and put on my seatbelt but I was still not prepared for the ride. 😳 you can absolutely read this as a stand-alone if you want but I can not stress enough that you should read the entire series!

Details that I loved:

✨World building guide!! & a glossary! I can’t get enough of them.

✨Morally-grey everything. There are no heros here and I loved every second of it.

✨I’m really desperate to match energy with Pegasus

✨Dionysus… Oh my gods. What an adorable creature he is. I honestly melted.

✨The spice scenes are worthy of the gods.

✨The nicknames. I’m such a ridiculous sucker for nicknames.

✨Ate was ruthless from start to finish and I couldn’t help but like her.

✨The drama and familial discord was 😳😳

In-depth review for fellow nerds:

This series is a Greek Myth retelling in the sense of historical character development, but the plots and settings are way more complex and fresh than you could imagine. The juxtaposition of Greek gods in a modern world was wildly entertaining. The pacing was perfect in this book, just as it was in the rest of the series. There are just the right amount of details without bogging down the story. I felt excited about every single chapter. The dual POV flows together beautifully and enhances the storyline. I have no criticisms, absolutely none.

Review:
It was so wonderful jumping back into this world that the author has created. As with the previous books I love how capricious the characters are. It is made clear they are not human, they are empowered immortals, so the rationality and morals of humans do not apply to them. Ate is a menace who only cares about her beloved god of wine, and maybe her horse. Dionysus we first meet as a ""human"" man named Sandro who works in a wine bar (HA), and he has a paramour named Vita that he wants to sleep with, but she keeps putting him off for some reason (??). As these 2 end up traveling together, and Sandro learns more about himself, you see that the obsession is far from one sided.

It was lovely seeing some of the characters from the previous books in the series and finally have a conclusion to the family squabbles. I would love more time in this world, and a little sad it is over, but I'm incredibly excited for the next books coming from this author.

Quotes:
- The possessive nature of it soothes a beast inside of me. This goddess might think I’m all hers, but she’s mine, too.

- For millennia, I’ve been desiring the only god who makes me feel like existence could be more than tedious, never- ending destruction. I should have remembered. I ruin everything I touch.

- “I should keep you like this, like you kept me. Tied to this bed to f*ck when I choose. Never letting you come.”

Shoshana Rain’s “Invoking Ruin” is the third and final book in her The New Olympus trilogy. These three books are technically standalones, but I truly believe you will have a better reading experience if you read them in order.

“Invoking Ruin” tells the tale of Dionysus and Atê, and I thought it was such a fantastic conclusion to this incredible trilogy. Rain’s writing style is absolutely addicting; I always feel connected to these characters as well as the worlds she creates.

What I really loved about this book was that Atê was the one who was extremely possessive of Dionysus, not the other way around, which is why Atê was a character I really enjoyed reading about. Yes, she was a little unhinged at times, but I don’t think she was entirely bad.

Dionysus, on the other hand, spent a portion of the book not remembering his life as a god. That was another reason this book was so intriguing - I loved reading about his behavior when he thought he was a mortal, and seeing how it changed once he remembered who he really was.

Dionysus and Atê had very intense, fiery chemistry, and although they had a lot to work through, I was rooting for them the whole time. No spoilers, but I was very satisfied with how this book/the trilogy ended. If you love modern Greek mythology retellings with a twist, I’d definitely recommend The New Olympus trilogy!

You know how everyone says there’s nothing new in romance? It’s the same old stories, just retailored? Shoshana Rain clearly didn’t get that memo, and her fascinating reimaginings of the Greek myths ends with a bang in Invoking Ruin.

And it makes sense to pair the goddess of ruin with the god of wine; after all, wine has led to many a ruin in real life. But in this case, is Ate to be the ruin of Dionysus? She’s kept her own memories after assisting her mother and grandmother in removing the gods’ memories, but she just can’t keep herself away from the god that has been her obsession her whole life.

Ate and Dionysus are both wonderfully realized characters, with layers of regret, longing, care, and willfulness on the part of each. Invoking Ruin brings to a culmination the long journey of the gods to avoid total ruin through a McGuffin that everyone’s after. And that does bring me to one warning: this book can stand on its own, but it’s best read as the last book of the trilogy. There’s a lot of knowledge from the two earlier books that enriches the reading experience here.

Invoking Ruin is a grand end to a wonderful series. Kudos to Rain for it.

Thank you Shoshana for the review copy, this is my honest opinion. I also had this on pre-order from the day it was announced and ordered the paperback as soon as it was available as well.

Ate is the Goddess of Ruin and just a little bit dramatic. She's also been running from the other gods and goddesses and playing keep away with one of the missing gods, Dionysus. Ate's running out of time and Dionysus is getting suspicious, but he's obsessed with this woman that keeps visiting him.

I love Ate and Dionysus so much, and of course Pegasus is everything a horse girl could dream of. They are so dramatic and there's definitely darker edges to them than the previous books. But I understand Ate and some of her issues. Ate describes herself as a one-goddess wrecking ball, and she's not wrong. She is also a walking bad decision and Dionysus eats that bad decision up.

This story could technically be read as a standalone but I highly recommend starting with Strife's Apple, then reading Oblivion's River since there are spoilers for both books in Invoking Ruin. I love the spiciness - a little bit controlling, very messy, and very hot. Dionysus is the god of pleasure and wild frenzy - it makes sense that the scenes are going to be hot.

My favourite pair

I think I enjoyed this book best of the trio. Ate is fantastic - so full of contradictions. I love how she struggles with doing what is right over being selfish. Dionysus is a perfect match for her.

For the series as a whole - I love how vibrant the imagery and visual depictions are. It’s so easy to paint a picture in your mind as you read the scenes. I also loved the premise of deities with dementia.

I think the best thing about the series is the decision to select lesser known goddesses in charge of less positive domains and pairing them with a well-known Olympian. It’s basically the nerd/unpopular girl and the star athlete trope but it is done very nicely.

If I could change anything - the time that has passed is a bit confusing at times which detracted a bit from the overall flow. Other than that, it was a fantastic series and I’m glad I read it.

This series just keeps getting better and better. This time we're following Até (Goddess of Ruin) as she tries to hide her love, Dionysus (God of Wine, etc.), from the other gods.

Only problem is he doesn't remember her or even being a god. He's just living his best life as a hunk in Italy. What's not to love about that life?

Can Até keep Dionysus sheltered from his true self forever, all while keeping him to herself? Or will the truth finally come out, and with it her true, dark intentions. Only time will tell!

🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

✨ Dual POVs
✨ Cat & mouse
✨ Greek myth
✨ Medium burn ❤️‍🔥
✨ Morally grey FMC 🩶
✨ Amnesia

I highly recommend this series. They're all interconnected, while being independent at the same time. It's a really interesting way to read/write a series.

And bonus points for the ending making my heart happy.💕💕

I can’t believe this series is over, I definitely need more!!!
I loved this new story of Atê and her dynamic with Dionysus. The gods are at it again with a thrilling game of chace. Only this time there are bigger consequences for everyone if it doesn’t play out well.
There are many favourable tropes including: enemies to lovers, stuck together, lost memories, rekindling an old flame, chasing and being on the run, as well as many more!
I was hooked on this book right away and loved the back stories of the characters and their families. Knowing someone intimately can be so intense, and I see that here, written so well! I will definitely be watching for more books from Shoshana Rain to be released, anticipating new reads!!
Five stars from me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am a big fan of Greek Mythology and enjoyed this new version of it a lot. It is not a retelling of myths but more inspired by Greek Mythology in a world things have worked out somewhat differently.
Ate is very secretive but for a good reason and me as a reader I quite enjoyed the way I learned about things through her very secretive nature. I truly enjoyed the aspect of memory loss and how it also played with the dynamics of the main characters and how the main characters instincts acted as their true self even before they fully found out themselves.

The dynamics were 🔥🌶️ between the main characters, they at times lowkey hated eachother but the way they just understood eachother within their hearts before fully realizing was very wholesome in a way.

This is a review without spoilers. Thank you to the author for an ARC copy of this book.

Invoking Ruin was quite the ride! We meet two very morally grey characters, with an interesting twist of the FMC giving off very possessive vibes. It was fun to see a strong FMC who was unapologetic and self-aware about her own moral grey-ness. The characters are based on Greek mythology, but this is not a retelling of any particular myth. I loved that the author chose a lesser-known god and goddess as the FMC/MMC. Their chemistry is excellent, but I wish they would’ve given into it more without as much angst/anger. But to be honest, the way it played out is very on-brand for both of them. This book can be read as a standalone, but I did read Strife’s Apple and it provided helpful context for some characters that show up in the book, especially at the end. Definitely worth the read if you’re tired of the typical Hades/Persephone retellings, if you enjoy Greek mythology, and aren’t afraid of some spice!

short, sweet and to the spice

Both excited to gain closure from this universe and a little sad it’s over. Shoshana writes such fun characters (though maybe now that this series is done she will have time to write the next dessert heiress?! Maybe? Please! Yes?!)

It’s a fast read. You could probably do it in a day if you are trying to reach a goal. The spicy is a little less 🌶️🌶️🌶️ than the other books but very well done.

I love the sort of anti-hero characters plagued by their nature. Definitely read even if you haven’t read the first two—but also, what are you doing read the first two! And dessert heiress. Definitely read that too.

Let this couple ruin you! Atê and Dionysus could not be more at odds, For one, the goddess of ruin has this god believing that he is nothing more than a mortal man falling for an enigmatic woman. He knows nothing of who he really is and Atê wants to keep things that way. Too bad his family and hers won't just let them be, To be fair, she does have the one thing that could end all of their existences. What happens when her captive god remembers who he is. Will he stand with his family or will he see her on her knees for playing him for a fool all these years. This was the spicy ending that this series needed! I loved them so much!

Wonderful ending to the series!

I loved this book! It has one of my favorite characters from the series, Atë in it, and I love her!! Picture a dark romance hero who is obsessed, follows them, and will do anything for their love(including *ahem* taking them away for a bit) and this explains Atë to a T! (Minus the darkness lol) it was an absolute breath of fresh air to have the FMC in this role, and Shoshana did an amazing job! I highly recommend this book and this entire series!

This series just got worse and worse. It started out so strong and I have no idea what happened. The only book worth reading was the first; the second was okay, but was lacking strong characters. This one was just plain bad all around. There was zero plot here and both main characters were completely terrible alone and had no chemistry together either. All these high reviews have got to be jokes, surely. I absolutely should have saved my time and DNF'd.

Invoking Ruin Book 3 - The New Olympus Series.

So it’s the final book of the series & this story is about Atê & Dionysus & also continues with the main back story from books 1 & 2.

I’m sad that this series has to come an end, each book has captured me from start to finish & as mentioned previously I’ve enjoyed the mix of light & dark & mythology. This books was fun to read, only towards the end it felt a little rushed but it was still nicely wrapped up.

I received an ARC for my honest review.

Amazing conclusion to a great series!

I'm having some bittersweet feelings today. First, I'm beyond delighted for Shoshana Rain, as she's released the final book in The New Olympus Series. But I'm also a little sad to be saying goodbye to the characters she's created here. Now, onto my Invoking Ruin thoughts.

Eris, from the first book in the series, Strife's Apple, has been my favorite morally grey (anti)heroine. She has held that place unchallenged for 2 years now. I loved Lethe from book 2 as well, but she is definitely a different kind of FMC. Atê, though. . .Atê brings all the drama, snark, and daring you'd expect from a daughter of Eris AND THEN SOME. She has kicked her mom off my pedestal, making this third book my new favorite in the series.

Dionysus is as hot as you'd expect from the god of wine (and drunken orgies, let's be real). Atê is obsessed with him and has stalked him for centuries. The back and forth between the pair throughout this book is toxic AF, in the best ways. And they unashamedly lean into their selfish, villainous true selves on this fast-paced, steamy, cat & mouse journey. I cannot express just how much I adore this pair, who've also become my favorite in the series now.

Go ahead and grab this one ASAP. You will not regret it!

This book marks the end of this series and I have to admit, it is a bit sad. This book is definitely darker than the other two in the series and our girl Atê is a overly obsessed with our delicious wine god, Dionysus. I do not blame her at all though, let's make that clear. He is just amazing. He fights against himself through the book, first with his identity and then with figuring out what to do with that identity. I will admit kidnapping was not the smartest move Atê could have done, but she only tried to give him what he wanted. Their relationship grows quickly after Dionysus finally decides what he wants and their spice is hot and wonderful to read. Amazing series!

A thrilling finale

A thrilling finale to this series which brings a new twist to Greek mythology, bringing it into the modern day. Lots of sex and some violence, so if that’s not your thing, this isn’t your book!
