Ruth Defies Authority to Hold on to her Family Farm Full of faith, hope, and romance, this new series takes you into the Heart of Amish country.
Ruth Helmuth has never been rude in her life; trust her to choose the bishop of her Amish community for her first time!
Ruth has worked hard to keep body and soul together since her husband, Levi’s, death. She tends her herd of goats, making her living from the milk and fiber she gets from them, all while running a farm and household by herself—and very competently, thank you! How could she imagine the bishop suggesting she should give it all up to another family, who will “make better use of the space”?
Enter widower Jonas Hershberger, owner of a pair of adorable dimples and father of a charming 4-year-old daughter. Jonas is in need of a larger place to house his growing business. Ruth’s big red barn may be just the ticket. Little Abigail is in need of a new mother. Ruth might be just the ticket there, too!
Can two independent souls learn to work together for their mutual good? And will they be willing to explore what grows between them? Or will Ruth’s fear over her “big secret” and Jonas’s caution about allowing someone new to get close to his young daughter, kill their love before it has a chance to grow?
Luckily for both of them, God’s plan involves the stubborn pair getting a little help in the form of a wise, elderly friend; a quirky orange kitten; and a smart little girl who takes one look at Ruth and decides she would make her the perfect new mother!

Ruth's Ginger Snap Surprise by Anne Blackburne is a truly exceptional and heartwarming Amish romance. This was my first encounter with Blackburne's work, and it instantly secured her a spot on my "must-read" list. The book is a breath of fresh air, reminding us to keep the faith day by day -- making it a must-read for fans of Amish romance and those seeking a story that warms the heart.
This story masterfully captures the yearning of a young Amish woman for independence and the hurdles she encounters along the way. A neighbor and widowed father, Jonas Hershberger, enters the scene. Their paths intersect when Jonas rents the upper part of Ruth's barn for his basket-making business, setting the stage for a heartwarming and enchanting tale. The rich character development and compelling storyline make this book a truly delightful and engaging read.
Anne Blackburne's storytelling talent shines through in this book, her very first published book. The characters are a joy to discover. The novel is filled with heartwarming moments and a dose of humor. Blackburne's writing is vivid and relatable, allowing you to immerse yourself in this uplifting and inspiring tale.
While there are some typical elements of Amish romance, the book offers a fresh and delightful take on the genre.
I received an eARC of Ruth’s Ginger Snap Surprise from its publisher Barbour Publishing, Barbour Fiction via NetGalley. I am neither obligated to write a positive review nor compensated for doing so. What you have just read reflects my genuine assessment and heartfelt notions of this refreshing and lovely novel.
A great new Amish read. Both main characters have lost their spouses. Jonas has a precocious young daughter, and Ruth was never able to have children. Life pushes them together, and they could help each other out, but is that God’s plan for their future? Then the bishop’s granddaughter pushes her way into the community and sets her sights on Levi. This endearing tale quickly draws the reader in and makes them care about these realistic characters. The story offers some circumstances a bit different than typical Amish novels and drops you into an engaging story world to hang out in for a while. The book contains plenty of twists and troubles, making readers wonder how everything will ever all come out right. And the cookie title also is the name given to Ruth’s new kitten. This new author will be one to look for in the future. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

This book and the other books in this series are 5 star stories
A very impressive debut novel. I love when a fresh voice in a genre knocks it out of the ballpark on the first swing. It was sweet, inspirational, great characters with flaws and facing the difficulties life throws at them. Ruth and Jonas are each learning to navigate life without their spouses but it looks different for each of them. Jonas has a spirited daughter that you just want to squeeze and a thriving basket making business while Ruth is alone except for her goats, dogs, and a cat. Throw in a bishop that is trying to complicate her life and a dear friend that gives her advice and you have an interesting, complicated story that makes you keep turning pages to find out the outcome. I was impressed with this new author and look forward to reading more. I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
This is such a delightful story. I so enjoyed getting to know the characters especially the little girl, Abby. This is a new to me author and I look forward to reading more from her. I was unaware that this was the second book in the series, and reading it I didn't feel like I was missing anything, so I think it could be read as a stand alone too. it has been a bit since I read Amish fiction so getting immersed in their way of life was a fun journey as well. I like reading about the simpler life.
Many thanks to Net galley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book. This is my honest review.
I received an advance copy as a gift. The book is superbly written. The story flow like water along a brook. Rooting for Ruth to make the right choices for herself and not was expected. Choices are hard for women when especially they are widow. If men would really open their eyes and see women can and are strong and not necessarily need a man to step in. The interactions between the characters had me wishing I was part of the story as an English neighbor next door. The surprise at the end of the story was sweet and enduring and reminded me that sometimes English connection to technology sometimes can ruin something as sweet as this surprise was. I'm hoping so many more will enjoy this book as much as I had the privilege to read it. It would make a great gift for friends who are into reading Amish stories. I'm looking forward to more books to come out from this story
I won this book in an Instagram giveaway. Oh, what a wonderful book it is! Ruth is a widow and manages her farm on her own. Jonas lost his wife in childbirth and is raising a young daughter. They are both Amish and in the same Order. The local bishop is trying to get Ruth to marry him and sell her farm. He is much older than Ruth, and Ruth is not interested in him or in selling her farm. She raises goats and is doing quite well, thank you. One of the local ladies decides to gift households with kittens from her cat's litter. Ruth is the lucky recipient of an adorable orange kitten that she names Ginger Snap. Without spoiling anymore of this sweet story, I urge you to pick up a copy and read it! It was one of the best Amish fictional books that I have read!
I really enjoyed meeting all the wonderful characters in this story! Ruth’s sweet demeanor and pure determination made me root for her throughout the story. I enjoyed the many twists and turns, and of course who doesn’t love a mean girl in the story. I look forward to more books from this author.
I received this copy from NetGalley for my honest review. Thank you to them, the publisher and author
Ruth's Ginger Snap Surprise is a sweet, fast-paced, descriptive, beautifully-written story that piqued my interest from start to finish! I really connected with Ruth, the strong, yet vulnerable female lead. This endearing, tender story will take you into a simple, yet rich, world that has everything in life that matters. This book is a wonderful must-read. Ruth's Ginger Snap Surprise gets five stars and the highest recommendation! I was given an ARC by the author and was not required to give a positive review. These opinions are my own.
“Ruth's Ginger Snap Surprise” by debut author Anne Blackburne is a sweet, heartwarming story with elements of love, resilience, and faith within an Amish community. The story revolves around Ruth and Jonas, both widowed and facing challenges in their lives.
Ruth is independent and resilient. As she strives to maintain her farm, she is determined to defy the community’s expectations. Jonas is running a business and raising his daughter, Abigail after his own loss. As they navigate grief, opportunities arise and lead them to solace and love in each other.
There is a balance of joy and sadness, so I appreciate the inclusion of humor and sentimentality. Most of all, I love the central themes of overcoming grief, finding love, and trusting in God’s plan in this story of second chances.
First Line: “Just stop blowing for one minute and I’ll be done!” Ruth Helmuth spoke around a wooden clothespin clenched in her teeth, the wind nearly whipping the damp, snowy-white apron out of her hands as she secured it to the line.
#CoverLoverBookReview received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions are 100% mine.
This is such a sweet, enjoyable story. Of course, any story including a cat is my kind of story. (My daughter would agree!) I enjoyed reading how Ruth and Jonas prayed about any decision which needed to be made. I look forward to reading Anne's next book!
If you enjoy sweet stories set in an Amish community, you will want to read this one.
This was a well-done debut novel for the author; I liked reading about how excited she was to find an agent and a publisher. I've read several Amish fiction books and a few things I enjoyed about this one were 1) the emphasis that the Amish have of dealing with life's disappointments by reminding themselves that all things are God's will ("Holding tightly to the living hope of salvation while accepting whatever came as God's will, as was the Amish way, had helped her through some very hard times"). This thought has been emphasized many times in the weekly Amish columns I read. I also found it interesting that 2) the Amish feel it's strange to have pet cats in the house, rather than outside. I was heartened, as an animal lover, to see that all the cats in this book were safely indoors :)
If you enjoy Amish fiction with a bit of romance, give "Ruth's Ginger Snap Surprise" a try.
This is a new author to me and I thoroughly enjoyed this story – beginning to end. What drew me to this book was the fact she raised goats. Reminded me of a great friend who loves stories about goats and it made reading the story that much more enjoyable. Great characters, I felt as though I was part of the community with Ruth. This story captured my attention and kept me reading. I didn’t have a chance to read the first book, but will be reading that one too. I hope there will be more in this series. I love this author’s style.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was under no obligation to review it. All opinions are mine.
a great book for sure. hard to put down and it is written in a way that makes you think you are there. Ruth and Jonas each face hardships and new ventures as they go day by day, but they work through them and with God's help succeed in each thing that comes into their life. " I was gifted with an advance copy of this book by the author and I am providing my honest review of this book"

This is Ruth Helmuth, Jonas Hershberger and daughter Abigail's story. The cold breeze caused the skirts of her long purple dress to billow around her ankles as she hurried back toward the warm house she’d shared with her husband, Levi, until his death nearly one year ago. But before she could climb the steps into her cozy kitchen with its glowing woodstove, a buggy turned into her driveway. “Now, who could that be?” Ruth squinted against the morning sun still riding low in the eastern sky. Her two Great Pyrenees dogs jumped up from where they’d been lying in the brown winter grass and barked a warning. “Wolke, Heftig, go guard the goats.” With a final half-hearted woof from Wolke, the pair took off toward the barn. He nodded, casting a slightly apprehensive glance toward the barn. “Well, I have something to discuss with you, Ruth, if you have a few minutes?” She sagged against the doorframe. She hadn’t even considered that the elders might think she should give up her farm. “That’s a fine, big barn you have, Ruth. I imagine you house your goats and other livestock there?” She nodded. “Ja, down on the first floor. I don’t use the top floor for much since Levi … passed.” His young daughter, Abigail, was waiting for him at home—four years old and a handful for a widower like himself. His eyes grew fierce when he thought about how he’d had to defend his right to raise his own child when Viola had died shortly after giving birth to the tiny little girl, fading before his eyes and gone before an ambulance could be summoned. There had been some who’d thought a lone man had no business raising a baby on his own and that he should give her up to some childless Amish couple. I recommend this book.. Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher. Opinions expressed are my own.
Scripture Connection Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Heb. 11:1
As a disclosure, I finished reading this book before Christmas and have read several others since then. My memory of the faith content (and specific details) is a bit foggy, but as I flip back through, what does stand out to me is the characters’ confidence and assurance. They trust that God’s plans are best, and that His desires for them are higher than theirs.
Spiritual Themes
As with Mindy Steele’s first book in the series, there’s sweet faith content woven gently throughout. The characters demonstrate a calm, assured, faith in Gott (German for God), and there are a number of references to trusting His plans and that they will happen.
There’s also a subtle thread about what it means to be a neighbor. This is specifically mentioned when Jonas offers to help Ruth, not because she is helpless, but because he wants to be “neighborly.” We also see how Lydia and Ruth are good neighbors to one another. In contrast, there are also examples of less neighborly behavior (though it’s not explicitly described in reference to this theme).
What I Liked
I had been hoping to read this title because I enjoyed book one in the series and because I was delighted by the coziness and Christmasy feeling of “ginger snap” in the title. I started reading the day I received the book and I enjoyed it even more than I’d expected.
Characters
Something I noticed, while reading, is that I enjoyed scenes from Jonas’ perspective, as well as those from Ruth’s. I realized that I sometimes find the male perspective a little bit boring, in Amish fiction, but that wasn’t my experience this time. I also like Jonas’s daughter, Abby, which was also refreshing, because it often feels to me like I am supposed to like the children of protagonists, but instead find them a little annoying.
Secondary characters were interesting and well-developed. Lydia, who is both a friend and mentor to Ruth, is very sweet but also on the sly side. That word is a little too strong, but Lydia is willing to make her own plans without letting people in on them. I really enjoyed Ruth’s friendship with Lydia!
Ruth’s relationship with Bishop Troyer is presented as nuanced. She very much desires to honor him as an elder and for his role in the community, but she is also willing to stand up for herself.
Evelyn, the bishop’s granddaughter, is one of the funniest characters I’ve read in a while. Her brash behavior is truly shocking, and her presence really livens the story. Although she isn’t a main character, I do think that I enjoyed the story much more because of her role in it.
Ambiance
Ruth raises goats for soap, cheese, and textiles. She’s also a great baker (there’s a running joke about her fantastic cinnamon rolls), and the title itself includes the word “ginger snap.” While it turns out that the ginger bread in the title isn’t the cookie (and the cover offers a clue for that), I found the book to be delightfully cozy.
The novel is a great read for winter, because a bit of the book takes place in winter. The story does include Christmas, and released in December, but it’s not a Christmas emphasis.
Content Notes
I don’t recall any content concerns.
Recommendation Status
Between the sweet plotline and the lack of “content” concerns, this is a book I am delighted to recommend. Recommended to readers who enjoy Amish fiction, gentle romance and cozy baking!
Ann Blackburne is making her writing debut by presenting her first published book, and second book inThe Heart of the Amish Series, also including, The Flower Quilter by Mindy Steele The Quilt Room Secret by Lisa Jones Baker. Each book could be read as a standalone, but whole series is wonderful.
This is Ruth Helmuth, Jonas Hershberger and daughter Abigail's story. Ruth is a young widow trying to run a large far by herself. Jonas is a widower with a precious 4 year old daughter. Jonas is the owner of a basket weaving business that is busting at the seams.
The plot is interesting and well developed. It keeps you turning the pages as you continue your journey through the story.
The characters are well developed and you feel they are REAL.
The overall theme is living through faith day by day.
Blackburne should be added to your TBR list.
I would rate this as a 4.5, just because there were some small things that didn’t ring true to Amish. Example, Jonas looked at his watch. Not sure Amish wear watches.
Thank you Barbour Publishing, Barbour Fiction for allowing me to read this book. All views expressed are my own, and I was not required to give a positive review.

Review: 5-Star This is one of those page-turners which you can’t put down so you read from cover to cover in one sitting. The flow, the editing along with the character development is spot on. I don’t know what else to say. The characters felt real, and the way the emotions were captured was brilliantly done as I could feel each emotion and they were spot-on. I will most definitely read other books written by this Author and I’ll let all my friends who enjoy this type of book know that this is a must-read.
I received this book from NetGalley for my honest review
Ruth, a thirty-three-year-old Amish widow, has kept her life running smoothly on her own. She raises goats, making cheese, soap, and fibers from them, and the profits support her.
Jonas, a widower with an adorable four-year-old daughter, has a basket business near Ruth. Since these two have circumstances that bring them together, a relationship between the two should naturally flow. But outside forces constantly work against them.
Her bishop thinks Ruth should give up her family farm. He wants her to sell it to a man who would make better use of it than a woman! He will not take no for an answer, and continues to bring buyers to her home to see if they want to purchase it.
He also has just the person he thinks Ruth should marry.
The bishop’s conniving granddaughter, Evelyn, also won't take no for an answer. She wants Jonas for herself. Evelyn creates a trap for him, that if successful, will force him to marry her.
To make things worse, Jonas botches it when he speaks to Ruth, leaving her thinking he is only interested in her because of the work she can do. This causes Ruth to believe Jonas does not have feelings for her.
There are some funny parts to the story, especially concerning cats, and the normal Amish practice of not keeping one indoors. Also, Ruth and Jonas are devoted to their faith, and five delicious Amish recipes are included.
This five-star book will keep you cheering for these two, but wondering if they will ever get together. Often the course of true love does not run smoothly. It certainly does not in this case, making this bumpy road of romance a great clean tale. This will be enjoyed by fans of Amish books, and well-written stories.
Thank you, Barbour Publishing, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.
Ruth’s Ginger Snap Surprise by Anne Blackburne – Enjoyable Story with Likeable Characters
Ruth’s Ginger Snap Surprise is the first book I have read by author Anne Blackburne. I found this book very enjoyable. It was a nice change of pace and filled with some likeable characters.
Ruth Helmuth has been a widow for a year and is childless. She lives on a property that has been a part of her family for many years. She is hard working, industrious, and provides for herself by raising goats, using their fiber and milk to earn income. That is why Ruth was taken aback by the proposal from Bishop Troyer that she sell her family’s farm to someone who he deems more deserving. Ruth knows of widower Jonas Hershberger and his young daughter Abigail. But it is not until he has a business proposition to use the upstairs of Ruth’s large barn for his basket weaving business that they get to know one another. Will their business relationship develop into something more?
The main characters in this book, Ruth, Jonas, and Abigail, as well as their friends are pleasant, kind, and caring. They are very supportive of one another. The only exception is Bishop Troyer and his rude granddaughter Evelyn. It seemed like the bishop was not very discerning and has turned a blind eye to his ill-behaved granddaughter.
I enjoyed reading Ruth’s Ginger Snap Surprise and felt like I was stepping into a different world. A slower pace of life and with nice characters, the kind of people I would like to know. Faith is a part of the storyline.
If you enjoy Amish fiction with a little romance, I recommend reading Ruth’s Ginger Snap Surprise by Anne Blackburne. This is the second book in the Heart of the Amish series. This book is an enjoyable read with likeable characters. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
I would like to thank Barbour Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of Ruth’s Ginger Snap Surprise by Anne Blackburne. I was under no obligation to give a favorable review.
I've adored reading Amish fiction for many years, so I'm always impressed when I stumble upon a truly original story within this genre, that feels unlike anything I've ever read before. Ruth's Ginger Snap Surprise was wholesome, heartwarming, and a truly original story that kept me engaged from start to finish.
I went into this one without having read the first book in the series, but I didn't end up feeling like I missed out on anything, as each title can be read as a stand alone. Ruth is a young widow who's recently been pressured by her Bishop to give up her family farm, since he assumes it's too much work for a young woman on her own. Instead she's determined to find a way to keep the beloved family farm that's come to mean so much to her, and one of her creative ideas includes renting her barn to widower Jonas Hershberger for his basket weaving business. Only she didn't expect to see sparks starting to fly between the young widower and herself. Add into the mix that Jonas's precious daughter plays a prominent part in the story, and the title and much of the story itself focuses around the adorable kitten that Ruth is gifted by her elderly friend, and this one pretty much has the perfect combination of all of my favorite things rolled into one beautiful story.
I ended up loving this one even more than I expected to, and I enjoyed that it's set during the Christmas season. I had a hard time wanting to put this own down once I started it, and I'm hoping to read more from this author in the future.
If you love heartwarming Amish Fiction and/or sweet and clean romances, then this one might just be for you.
Final Rating: 5/5.

RUTH'S GINGERSNAP SURPRISE (HEART OF THE AMISH) by Anne Blackburne
This book makes you think about life events in a different way, compared to most of the other Amish fiction books on the market. I had not thought of these issues coming up in the Amish communities.
Ruth is a childless widow who lives on a large farm with large outbuildings and acreage. She does use the land and some of the outbuildings for her goats and small enterprises, but the bishop of her community decides that Ruth needs to sell out and let another family have the use of such a large, well maintained farm. Ruth's grandparents started the farm, she has no desire to move, so she has to figure out what to tell the bishop and what to do with her bountiful farm.
Jonas is a widower with a small daughter. He too has been almost a victim of the well-meaning bishop and elders. When his wife passed away, the bishop tried to influence Jonas to give his newborn daughter to another family to raise. Jonas felt like most parents and said that he would be raising his daughter.
It seems as though the elders of their church, along with their bishop are thinking on what's best for everyone else, except for Ruth and Jonas as individuals, they too would count as members of their community.
I enjoyed reading about Jonas and Ruth's lives. The author pulls you right into their daily activities. Highly recommended.

Ruth's Ginger Snap Surprise by Anne Blackburne, book two in the Heart of the Amish series, is full of faith, hope, supportive friends, and romance. Ruth Helmuth, a widow, has been managing her profitable goat farm alone since her husband passed away a year ago. Bishop Troyer, bishop of her Amish community is pressuring her to sell her farm to another family, who would make better use of the space; as he doesn’t believe she can manage it by herself. Ruth ends up pursuing several money-making opportunities with the help of her friend Jonas Hershberger, a widower. Jonas, father to 4-year-old Abigail, is in need of a larger place to house his growing business and Ruth’s big red barn may be just the answer. While working together, running business ideas by each other, and spending time together, an unexpected attraction simmers between Ruth and Jonas. Before exploring or admitting their feelings, Ruth needs to share a secret with him, while Jonas, cautious about allowing someone new getting close to his young daughter, needs to give her a chance. Fortunately G-d’s plan involves giving this stubborn pair a little help in the form of: a wise, elderly friend, a quirky orange kitten, and a smart little girl who takes one look at Ruth and decides she would make her the perfect new mother!
I enjoyed this story as it touches all of the emotions: joy, sadness, surprise, and even anger at the bishop’s conniving granddaughter. I highly recommend Ruth's Ginger Snap Surprise to other readers.

This is a new to me author and quite often I am willing to give these authors a try. This is how I find some great reads. I am glad I tried this new author. Though not at the writing level of some of the more established authors who write Amish fiction I still enjoyed the story. The presentation was easy to follow along with, the plot, nothing out of the ordinary that I haven't seen in other Amish books, but it was a fun story. When you add in kittens, big friendly guard dogs, and mischievous goats I don't think you can go wrong. Ruth Helmuth, a childless widow has a nice farm, outbuildings and a dawdi house attached to her house. She uses all of these though to raise her goats and make her goat milk products, including soaps and lotions. When the bishop comes for a visit, he believes she should sell her farm to a man from the community who needs the prime property to expand his business. The bishop also believes she should remarry and quickly. She is pretty shocked when he makes her an offer, he thinks she won't be able to pass up. A widowed neighbor man with a young daughter starts helping her with chores around her farm and they become close. When he sees how taken she is with his daughter he knows she'd be the perfect mother for her, but is that all he is interested in her for? It was fun seeing the interaction with her neighbor's daughter and Ruth's kitten. She is a fun and spunky little girl. I will be reading more by this author.
Pub Date 01 Dec 2023 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Anne Blackburne is a new author who did an amazing job with her debut novel.
The main characters Ruth and Jonas have both lost their spouses. Jonas has a young daughter. Ruth isn’t able to have children.
It's been only a year since Ruth lost her husband and she is trying her hardest to keep up with the farm by herself. The farm is dear to her as it has been in her family for generations. Life is about to get complicated for Ruth. Bishop Troyer visits her concerning her farm. He gives her two options. One is to sell the farm to one of the men in the community. Her farm has a lot of amenities that would be good for a family. The second option is to marry Bishop Troyer. The Bishop recognizes that he is much older than her and that it would be a marriage of convenience as they are both lonely. Ruth isn’t interested in selling or marrying for convenience. She wants to expand her business with her goat's milk products.
Jonas has a four-year-old daughter. He starts helping Ruth with chores around her farm. He loves Ruth’s interaction with his daughter. Ruth is getting fond of both Jonas and his daughter. The story is fun with the mischievous goats, a guard dog, and a kitten named Ginger Snap. The characters are well-developed and realistic. You can’t help to not find yourself immersed in their lives. The plot is well-developed and kept my attention to the last page. I look forward to more books from Anne Blackburne.
Disclosure: I received this complimentary product in exchange for my honest thoughts.
I absolutely adored this book 100%! This new to me author has done an incredible job of pulling me into Ruth and Jonas's story from the beginning. Ruth is such a sweetheart. I loved her from the get-go. Grief is never a good thing and takes a while to heal and to go on living even though it's hard. Grief and missing someone can strike at any time. I miss my mom all the time. Life isn't the same without your loved ones. At first, I was appalled at the Bishop, and then I began to laugh because the way he timed it, that was terrible! I definitely didn't like his daughter, Eleanor. I thought she was rather rude and jealous. But anyway, there's a sweet kitten involved that made me smile Lydia is a wonderful character and my favorite! I love her words of wisdom, and she's a good friend to Ruth. I feel like she's my friend too. I liked Jonas well enough but I thought he was rather pushy about what he wanted. I won't say nothing more as I don't want to give it away. The book has such a cute cover, too. This book will also make you drool to the point you'll want to reach through the pages and pull out a treat or eat dinner with our friends. I can't wait to see what she writes next. I hope she does! I really loved and enjoyed this story. 5 stars for a well written story. I highly recommend it. My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Ruth’s Ginger Snap Surprise by Anne Blackburne is a sweet story. I thought the book was well-written with realistic, developed characters. I enjoyed getting to know Ruth Helmuth, Jonas Hershberger, and little Abigail Hershberger. I could not believe that Ruth’s bishop, Abram Troyer suggested that she sell her family farm, which held many memories for her, because she lived alone. The bishop felt a family could make better use of the large house and property. Ruth is a good businesswoman. She has her herd of wily goats. Ruth uses their milk and fiber. She comes up with other ways to utilize the property and earn money. I liked learning about Jonas and his sister’s basket business. Their baskets sounded lovely, especially the Christmas baskets. You can feel that faith is a part of the character’s daily lives. They pray to God for guidance and assistance. They know that He will provide in His own time. I enjoyed the humor sprinkled through the story. The kitten that Ruth receives from her dear friend, Lydia Coblentz, provides many lighthearted moments. Lydia knew what she was doing when she gifted the ginger kitten to Ruth. A couple of Ruth’s friends also received kittens. Lydia is an insightful woman. Ruth’s Ginger Snap Surprise may be the second book in The Heart of the Amish series, but it can be read as a standalone. I especially enjoyed the heartwarming ending. I finished Ruth’s Ginger Snap Surprise with a smile on my face.
This has been such a fun book to read and I’m impressed that this is a debut book for the author. The wonderful characters become like family as I find myself enjoying each one. The setting is nice as we get a glimpse at Amish life. The author gives vivid details about raising goats and making baskets. These are just a few ways the Amish make money.
I would love to visit Jonas as he makes the baskets and gets them ready to sell. He has been raising his sweet daughter Abigail on his own since the death of his wife. I admire how dedicated he is to Abagail and his determination to raise her in a Godly home. When he meets Ruth I started wondering if there would be any sparks between them. He has thought about Abigail needing a mother so perhaps he should open his heart to a new relationship.
Ruth is such a good character. She lives on a big farm raising ghosts, making soaps and milk to sell. I laughed when the bishop stopped by with a proposal that took Ruth by surprise. The thought of selling her farm is ridiculous, she thinks to herself. God will provide the answer she needs, so she prays and waits on Him. I love how kind Ruth is and her desire to help others.
The story is filled with faith, hope, surprises and a new beginning for several characters. I loved getting to know the author’s writing skills and can’t wait to read her next book.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
“Ruth’s Ginger Snap Surprise” is my first ever Amish romance, and it was a charming read! Ruth lost her beloved husband, Levi, a year ago and has been working on her family’s farm as best as she can. The story begins with a visit from Bishop Troyer, who has two propositions for Ruth: first, he strongly advises that she sell the farm to a male member of the community; it appears not to be the usual and accepted practice for a widowed young lady to continue living on her own. When Ruth, who loves the farm that has been in her family for generations, does not agree to sell, he then goes to his second proposition: marriage to him. Troyer acknowledges he is “too old for her” but contends that a marriage of convenience would make them less lonely. But Ruth does not want a marriage of convenience! And she has plans for making her farm more profitable, including renting her barn to Jonas, an attractive widower with an adorable 4-year-old daughter. Before long, Ruth grows fond of them both. This is a sweet, low-angst romance with wonderful characters, elevated by the skillful writing of debut author Ms. Blackburne. I will definitely read more of her work in the future! Considering the descriptions of food in this book might make readers hungry, the author thoughtfully included several recipes at the end!
