From the #1 bestselling author of the beloved Calendar Girl books comes the first in a witty, wise and emotionally compelling new series, where coming home is just the beginning…
“Fly free.”
For ten years those words, written on pink parchment paper in her mother’s beautiful handwriting, have been Suda Kaye Ross’s guiding star. Every year on her birthday, Suda Kaye opens another of the letters her mother penned before she passed, heeding the advice inside as she fills her life with experiences. From Italy to Australia, from Rio to Russia, she’s slaked her wanderlust. And then, on her twenty-eighth birthday, she opens the letter that sends her home.
Returning to Colorado means confronting everything—and everyone—she left behind, including her cherished sister, Evie, and her first love, Camden Bryant. Suda Kaye and Cam spent four years and one unforgettable night together. Given the way she ran out on him, it’s no surprise that he’s wary, resentful…and engaged to someone else. Evie, hardworking and überresponsible, just wants her sister to put down roots at last.
For Evie’s sake, and her own, Suda Kaye is trying to build a new life, all the while wondering whether it’s too late to come back home—or if the most important part of her never really left.
Audrey Carlan is a new-to-me-author and her writing style and pacing was pleasing. A plot centered around family, the strong bond between sisters, a journey to find oneself and a second chance to mend a broken love are among my favorite draws. And the addition of the Native American cultural aspects were probably the best part of this book for me. A wonderful addition in adding a deep and meaningful layer to the storyline. Sadly, even though there were parts I found interesting and entertaining, there was a greater number of dislikes. I apologize upfront for the rambling review that follows, but I had a really hard time with this one getting my feelings down in words.
Her mother’s last words to Suda Kaye Ross: Fly free. And fly she did all over the world for a decade – before finally returning home.
This book started out with a bang with its unique hook, but the more I read the less interested I became. My feelings regarding Suda Kaye were very conflicting. I liked her and then I didn’t like her very much at all. Even in the end, she just didn't fulfill my expectations. Camden was a supertastic hero and I thought he got the short end of the stick with Suda Kaye.
This wasn’t quite what I expected – and a lot didn’t fall into place for me either. In a planned seduction, a young and inexperienced girl gives her virginity to long-time boyfriend, and then immediately takes off for parts unknown without giving him any kind of warning after swearing her love for him -- gone for over a decade without so much as a word between them. That’s just not right – mean girl in the making.
Maybe it was just me, but I thought her sexual escapades with a different guy in every port were a little over-the-top. I definitely didn’t like how she flaunted them at every chance she got in front of Camden and her sister, Evie. Suda Kaye was all over the place with her feelings – and not very genuine it seemed, causing this reader to doubt her commitment to long-term relationships!
I found the ongoing episode between Cam and his current Barbie Doll scamming fiancée to be frivolous page-filler and maybe something that could have or should have been left out altogether. The one real relationship where he felt something genuine for another woman that lasted a year during Suda Kaye’s absence received barely a nod. In my opinion, it added nothing to the storyline, and the time could have been beneficially spent on Cam and Suda Kaye’s second chance.
The two bros who worked as carpenters in Suda Kaye’s new “Gypsy” store were an interesting pair – complete opposites of the other. Bringing a little action into the story, they drew my attention and I would like to know more about them – perhaps after Evie gets her story with Milo and one I’m highly anticipating.
Overall, I found What the Heart Wants to be a middle of the road read – and one I’ll admit was more than a little disappointing. I had fallen in love with both the cover and title, and the hype had me over-excited for this book's arrival. I'm well aware that I'm in the minority with my opinions, but it just didn't sit well with me from almost the start.
Very beautiful and heartwarming read. Suda is a free-spirited like her mother. Before Suda’s mother passed she penned a letter for each of her girls to open on their birthdays. To much of Suda’s sister disapproval, Suda took off wandered and experienced the world for years. She checked in with her sister every so often. She dated many men she met along the way but never settled her heart for love. On her twenty-eight birthday, Suda opens the letter and this one sends her home to Colorado. Suda finally come back to face her sister Evie and her first love Camden whom she left brokenhearted many years prior. Evie has a lot of resentment toward Suda for abandon her all alone. Camden is still hurt and beyond angry – he cannot understand how Suda could discarded their relationship like yesterday trash. Suda is ready to settle and start to put down roots. It’s will not be an easy feast as she needs help from her sister and Camden. She has a lot of hurdle to overcome because the people that know her the best are not totally convinced Suda will be ever be content with this new life. The one person Suda must try the hardest is Camden who not only her business investor but also the person she still loves deeply. I do feel for Suda though – she can’t help who she is. Suda made some hard decisions and she had to live with the heartache as well. Will Suda finally find a way to spread her wings, find her HEA, and still plant roots? Ooopfs, this one is full of angsts, slow burn, emotional and passionate. What the Hearts wants is a heartfelt, gorgeous story about a young lady self-discovery, family, friendship, forgiveness and second chance romance. Unique and unforgettable!

Wow, truly that is my first reaction to this book. I don’t know what I was expecting when I picked up What the Heart Wants by Audrey Carlan, but I do know what I got; a five star, not to be missed novel of 2020. Full review coming on release date www.guiltypleasuresbookreviews.com
New to me author Audrey Carlen swept me away with this wonderful tale of second-chance love. Well, love that endured for ten long years. Suda Kay and Camden both stole my heart and took me on at beautiful trip with their unending love.
Suda Kay was a wanderer, just like her mother. Fly Free was her motto and went wherever her heart or the letter from her mother took her. She was a bird with a wingspan as large as the earth and they never got tired. Until the last letter when she was told that it was time to go home. Be with Evie and let her heart now rule her soul. So, she does.
Evie is thrilled yet wary that her sister isn’t just going to flit into town and flit right back out again. She’s hurt, she’s vulnerable and yet she hopes that this isn’t just a visit. She will support her in any way that she can except for the one that that Suda asks for … investing in a project that may or may not take off in their town. She has an idea that could help her and would involve and little more work and commitment from Suda. She hopes this is what keeps her where she belongs.
Camden is taken aback, furious and extremely surprised that the client that they are interviewing is his Suda Kay. The woman who flew away and never looked back. He loved her, wanted nothing more than to spend his life with her, give her whatever it was she needed but she just left. Now she’s back and his life is turned upside down. Is it for good, is she going to fly away again, is she here to win him back? So many questions and she refuses to answer them. He can’t move forward, and he can’t stop thinking about the past. Until everything finally comes together, and he has no choice but to trust her and his instincts.
I love the way this story flowed. From beginning to end, you had no choice but to turn page after page and hope that tears wouldn’t be flowing down your cheeks. Sad tears, happy tears, tears of joy. Ms. Carlan breaks your heart and then puts it back together again. I loved the camaraderie between Evie and Suda Kay even though Evie would get really moody at times. I loved the banter between Camden and Suda Kay once things settled down. Their loved was palpable and shined through whenever they were together. The supporting characters in the book just made everything so much more enjoyable and brought the story together.
From the Indian culture to sizzling sex scenes, I couldn’t have been happier with the way this story was told, with the way it was written or with the way it ended. If I could have given it a 10 star review, I would have. Audrey Carlan has my attention and I am looking forward to reading more from this amazing author.
What the Heart Wants showed us how to dream, how to love your life and your family, what unconditional love means and how to know when to grab onto that love and those dreams and never let go.
This didnt work for me. The heroine leaves after the Hero takes her virginity, no explanation. I know she was young but she doesn't discuss it with him or explain she just leaves when he's talking about marriage and a future together.
When she returns she flirts with everyone. The Hero says that men are interested just because it's her, they can't help themselves but even after seeing the Hero again she talks with her sister about the sexual appeal of several men. Fair enough when she returns the Hero is engaged so she free to flirt with whoever she wants but it's hard to take her interest in the Hero seriously when she has been looking at all the other hotties. When they meet again and she finds out the Hero is engaged and of course his fiance is a plastic Barbie so he's not really happy. But while he is engaged he flirts with the heroine and says things like they can remain friends, for now, implying there will be more to their relationship soon.
During their 10 year separation, both are with others. He was in a serious relationship for a year. She flitted from place to place and was intimate when she felt like with whoever.
No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine but a contractor does kiss the heroine and the Hero sees it.
Breadcrumbs dropped for future books in series.
HEA. But I would doubt her commitment given how fast things move in their relationship.

Wow! What to say about this heartwarming read from Audrey Carlan.
From the very first page of this book to the very last, my heart just felt this story. And I truly mean from page 1... Sisterhood and love were woven into everything from the dedication through to the acknowledgments. It was just beautiful.
What the Heart Wants is a delightful tale of coming full circle. Flying free as a teen… gaining a treasure trove of worldly experiences. Spending a decade separated from those that mean the most to her. And then coming home and realizing that you can fly free and have roots at the same time.
What the Heart Wants is an emotional, passionate, second chance romance full of wit and wonder. This is a summer must-read! The perfect book to kick back with outside and lose yourself in the beauty of the words.
A lovely story about second chances- second chance romance and second chance family. Suda Kaye left Colorado when she was 18, inspired (or compelled) by a letter from her deceased mom. She left behind her sister Evie and Camden, a good guy. She travels the world- all over the world- and then, 10 years in, comes home. Things aren't the same as they were when she left. Certainly Evie's changed and while she welcomes Suda Kaye home, she has some residual resentment. Then there's Cam. Can these two rekindle their relationship? Should they? You know they will, don't you- because Suda Kaye didn't bond with any other man while she was out and about. Thanks to Edelweiss fo the ARC. Nicely done characters and good storytelling made this a pleasant read.
This was a beautiful story. It was heart wrenching at times, it had well developed characters, moved at a great pace, and touched on a lot of subjects that I know little about so also very educational. I hope that there will be more books in this series.
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
I am a huge Audrey Carlan fan, and this is another excellent, fabulous read. I loved them all from page one, and didn't put it down until my eyes were closing over the matchsticks. It is such a lovely story, which I will definitely have on my to reread list in the "make me smile and cheer me up" column.
Suda Kaye has been on the adventure of lifetime, but now decides it time to go home. No one there can really trust that after ten years of travel she will really settle, so there is a sadness about them waiting for the shoe to drop. This is so beautifully written and lived out, that I could feel the desire of Evie to believe her, of Cam to think there might be a chance she'd stay, but they can't quite.
I loved the boutique being created, the fun with the constructor, and the craft items that she creates to sell. It was a wonderful marker of her arrival, yet her remaining a flamboyant and free person, marching to her own beat, but building a business around her skills and to bring happiness to others through beautiful things.
As for the romance, well it had been 14 years in the making/waiting, but with the complication of a fiancée and her crazy sidekick, things don't go smoothly, until they do ... and we get to see that maybe 10 years apart was the making of them, not the end at all.
I do hope that we get Evie's story too - as the Porter / Milo issues need to be explored
Audrey Carlan proves once again why she is a #1 NYT best selling author with What The Heart Wants. This story gives me all the feels because it’s empowering and magnificent! It reminds me of all the reasons I fell in love with Audrey’s storytelling in the first place. It’s an emotional, unique journey of love, light, heartache, passion and joy! Suda Kaye is a free spirit who loves to experience all walks of life. I could not get enough of her and Cam. They are a sexy, irresistible couple that have been through so much. Then add in the amazing but complicated relationship these sisters have and you won’t put this book down. The love and devotion between these two makes me wish I had a sister of my own. They are so different, but have an inseparable and unbreakable bond. You need to read this book for the letters, the barn, the wishes and their grandfather alone. Audrey shows us exactly why second chances can and do mean the world in this masterpiece. What The Heart Wants will captivate your heart and mind resonating with you forever.
I have read quite a few books by Audrey Carlan, and they were all fabulous and this book was no different. I love her writing it is just so effortless to read. What the Heart Wants is such a beautifully written second chance romance. It also showcases wonderful sibling relationships. Suda Kaye leaves the love of her life to spread her wings and fly to see what the world has to offer her. She eventually comes back home and is ready to settle down. I really loved the character development that Audrey Carlan is really good at. It was a love letter to sisterhood and learning how to be free while you still keep your feet planted firmly in the ground. All in all I loved this book and can't wait to read more of Audrey Carlan's work.
I like the author, but this book is not my cuppa. The female character was lusting after and planning to sleep with another guy even after she reconnected with Cam. Also, whenever she would recall a certain place, it's always connected to a sexcapade, instead of the place, people or culture. She didn't reflect on what she learned from her experience or talk about the connections and friendships she has formed, only guys she bedded. Looking forward to the story of her sister, Evie.

Misty's Corner Review: What the Heart Wants has everything you could ever want or need; it's 352 pages of racy romantic women's fiction at its finest! Luckily for us readers, Suda Kaye's love life isn't the only relationship nourished from the roots up as Audrey Carlan does a fantastic job of bringing raw beauty to the love of sisterhood! Her writing style draws me in every time, there's just something about it - the familiarity, the love of feeling connected, the humor, and the unashamed intimacy. What the Heart Wants is genuinely unforgettable.
Our story begins in the aftermath of Suda Kaye's mother's death as she embarks on what ends up becoming a decade long adventure around the world, experiencing more than most could ever hope for in a lifetime. On every birthday, Suda and her sister Evie open a new pre-written letter from their mother, designated for specific times and milestones in their lives. As she reads her latest letter on her 28th birthday, she knows that it's time to return home. After coming back to her sister, Evie, in Colorado, Suda Kaye decides it's time to dig in settle down. Although her sister isn't the only person, she runs back into... queue, her first love, Cam.
Four days. That's all it took for me to devour every.single.page! It would have been much sooner, but, you know - the life of a mom and wife came calling... and sleep. Yet, when I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it. The heartwarming stories of Suda Kaye, Evie, Cam, the loveable Bryants, elder Tahsuda, and Milo were a joy to read. Although fictional, there was something bittersweet about the realistic feeling within What the Heart Wants. Just make sure you read the author's note at the end as there's much insight on the inspiration and sheer amount research put into this novel.
Quick question before I go, have you heard the song "No Place" by the Backstreet Boys? Parts of this song remind me of What the Heart Wants in many ways; Suda Kaye has traveled the world, but there just ain't no place like home! I am very much looking forward to reading Evie's story in the upcoming sequel To Catch a Dream. The preview at the end just makes me all the more interested in the 'Ross' sisters!
I would recommend this book to everyone because literally, everyone should experience What the Heart Wants. Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers at Harlequin Books, the author Audrey Carlan and her amazing PA Jeananna Goodall for providing me with an advanced reader's copy of this title in exchange for my honest review.

I could not have adored this story more!! This tale of second chance romance, of coming home after years away, of sisters, of a deep need to follow wherever the road leads. Audrey Carlan blew me away!! There was something authentic and deeply wonderful about Suda Kaye as a character. I loved her outlook of living her life fully, of finding the beauty in every experience, and for trusting her soul. The deep connection with her sister, Evie, was simply wonderful and what I think we all hope we find. As was the influence of her mother and the truly special connection with her even in death.
But it was the reconnection with Camden that just brought this story full circle. The way their attraction leapt off the page to me, even when Cam is frustrated with her that did me in! These two were passion personified. I mean holy hotness Audrey!! I loved Camden in all his alpha, “you left me but damnit I still love you” glory. I love that he both fights his desire for Suda Kaye but can’t stop himself around her at the same time. But it’s when he finally owns that his life isn’t complete without her that he comes alive.
I love a second chance story; there’s just something that hits me in the feels about them. What the Heart Wants was all of this and more. It was as much about the love between Suda Kaye and Camden as it is a story of coming home, finding your place and your inner home.
5 Star Review What The Heart Wants (Wish #1) by Audrey Carlan This was a beautifully written, emotional, heart felt story that ticked the boxes for me. This was a book that gave me all the feels. Suda Kaye Ross is a free spirit travelling the world for ten years and avoiding going home and facing the people she left behind, her sister Evie and the man who held her heart Camden (Cam) Bryant. This was an emotional read at times as every year on her birthday, Suda opens a letter from her mother who wrote them prior to her death, as she travels the world. That is until she reads a letter that finally sees her returning home. This book is a journey of discovery, of looking deeply inside oneself and coming to terms with what you find. The resentment and hurt that Evie and Cam felt when Suda left, still burns brightly and their feelings were palpable, making the story realistic. Will Suda be able to make amends with those she hurt so badly and in doing so recapture the love and family that she has been missing? This is a story of angst, passion, forgiveness, love and family and one that touched me to my soul. One click this little gem, you won’t be disappointed.
What can I say about a book that captivated me on every page and every word that I read? Sensational. Magnificent. Powerful. Emotional...you get the picture? Yes, this book will make you feel like you are living through Suda Kaye’s journey. Her free spirit resonates so much with me that I actually had a hard time finishing the last chapter as I didn’t want it to end. It’s that good! Cam is such an amazing character. His passion and love for Suda has no limit. I’ve claimed him as my book boyfriend because I’m in love with him. He is a dreamy man. This is a journey that you should take this summer. You will love this book as much as I do. Love, sisterhood and second changes will grab your heart and attention and will leave you wanting to find out what Audrey has in store next! Until then, I’ll just re-read this masterpiece to keep my heart content! Nanedsmomba- reviewer and blogger for Life Reads With Friends
If you want to read a second chance romance this summer this is the book for you. The free bird Suda Kaye is ready to set down some roots after a decade of exploring the world. The bond between Suda Kaye and her big sister Evie is unbelievable. They are always by each other's side and holding back no secrets from one another. Suda Kaye left her first love to spread her wings but they are reunited when she is ready to make a home for herself. The passion never faded away and no matter what happened in their past the heart knows what it wants which is forever with each other.
If you want a second chance romance this is the book for you. I wished I could have lived my life like Suda Kaye after she read a letter from her deceased mother. She went out into the world to spread her wings and fly free but the bond she had with her sister never faltered and Evie was always there for her. When Suda Kaye came home to settle down and make roots the sparks rose again with her one true love. Even though Suda Kaye was gone for 10 years it seems like it was only yesterday they were together.

If you've read any of this author's previous works, you know her books are well written. Well paced book, with good character development. First in a series that will leave you wanting the release date for the follow up to be soon!
Sometimes children follow the paths their parents have set. That was the case with Suda Kaye Ross. Although madly in love with high school sweetheart Camden Bryant, after reading a letter left by her deceased mother, she decides to leave everything behind, including her sister and Cam. For her entire life, her mother was filled with wanderlust. Her mother traveled her entire life, and was only home for short periods of time. Her father was in the military so he was hardly ever around either. However, Suda Kaye had an idyllic life. She spent most of her time on the reservation with her grandfather and her beloved sister Evie.
When their mother died, the girls were given a packet of letters, instructed to open them each year on their birthday. It was the letter Suda Kaye opened on her 18th birthday that gave her the impetus to travel the world over. Ten years of fabulous experiences, something she would not have traded for the world. At the age of 28 now, the letter for this birthday was enough to give Suda Kaye the desire to go home.
Has her wanderlust been slaked? What about her relationship with Evie? More importantly, what about Cam? Suda Kaye's feet become firmly planted. She sets out a plan to open a business and to begin a new life. Cam immediately becomes part of that life - in a business sense. Personally, however, Cam is still broken due to the fact that Suda Kaye left when she did. They were destined to be together, but she destroyed that.
Will the draw that Suda Kaye and Cam share be enough to leave the past behind and begin anew? Will the two find their way back to one another? Will they be able to build a future together, proving that their destinies do indeed line up? In this remarkable story by Audrey Carlan readers are treated to a warm, wonderful, often sexy story of two hearts that find a way to become one.
It was okay. A OTT at times. Other woman drama, Hero is engaged which he seems to forget at times. No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine. During separation. Hero had drunk sex with other woman, who takes pregnancy, so he proposed. She faked the pregnancy. They weren't intimate since. HEA.

A year ago, I read the second book in this series and added What the Heart Wants, to my TBR. With the third book now out, I wanted to catch up on Suda Kaye's story. In hind sight, I wish I had read them in order, and recommend that to readers. Suda Kaye was a free spirit, one with wanderlust just like her mom. On her 18th birthday, she is given a pile of letters who mother wrote to her before her death. She is to read one each year on her birthday. The first one tells her to "Fly Free." That is what she does for ten years, but now it is time to go home and settle down. It is time to face those she left behind in Colorado: her sister, Evie, and the boy, Camden, she spent four years loving, now a man. Suda Kaye wants to open a store, but needs investors. An old family friend introduces her to a group that invests in Native American businesses and it sound promising. Suda Kaye arrives at the pitch meeting to find out that one of the major members of the group is none other than Camden Bryant.
This was a wonderful story, one that dealt with first loves, family, dreams, found family, independent women, Native American culture and of course romance. There were times that I loved Suda Kaye, and other times that she frustrated me. She was gone for ten years and had relationships with many others, but still loved Camden. She also loved his family and they loved her. Evie is the strong supportive sister, who was scared Suda Kaye would run off again if something turned out wrong. Camden and his family were amazing as well. They had been a surrogate family to Suda Kaye and Evie after their mother died and their father was traveling in the military and their love, support and familial friendships flowed through the story. Camden's and Suda Kaye's reawakening with each other started like a dance, but it didn't take long to rekindle full force. There were some explicit bedroom scenes that I skimmed, but that didn't ruin the story for me. I enjoyed Suda Kaye's story and look forward to reading, On The Sweet Side.
So.. to start I’m a HUGE Audrey Carlan fan and jumped at the chance to read her new book.. FYI she didn’t disappoint, she never does.
Firstly.. characters..
Suda Kaye; a free spirited woman trying to follow her mums last wish for her.
I love this character and I feel for this character, the decision she took to travel the world at the expense of her one true love was truly inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time.
Camden; a heartbroken business investor still not over the fact his one true love left him after one of the most important nights of their life.
I definitely felt for this character, losing Suda Kaye and not knowing why definitely damaged him. I love that he didn’t let it affect him too badly, that he tried to have a good life.
These characters are amazing, all the struggles they were met with and overcame was again truly inspiring.
Secondly.. storyline
I absolutely LOVED this story and the message I got from it...
How no matter what happens true love weather it’s romantic or family oriented will always be with you wherever you go and wherever you end up. That no matter what you do there will always be people to love you no matter what.
Lastly.. Thank you..
Thank you Audrey for this absolutely amazing story, I’ve love every book of yours that I’ve read and this one is no different, it’s definitely something I see myself re-reading more than once.
Your words and imagination is truly a wonderful thing and I can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
THANK YOU!!!!

Audrey Carlan is my all time very favorite author, so I may be a bit bias, but this book is her best yet. I absolutely loved the relationship between Cam and Suda Kaye, so sexy and fantastic that they can each flex their independent muscles and still appreciate each other wholeheartedly. I definitely had a hard time throughout the descriptions of the sisters deep connection and the loss of their mom, only because of my own loss. It also helped me be so very thankful for my chosen "sisters" in my life and for the beauty of sisterhood as a whole. One of the snippets that had me tearing up, putting the book down for a moment, then really telling myself that I still have the bond of sisterhood with my soul sisters even though my blood sister has decided to be a crazy person......... ""She squeezes my hand and the sensation of sister solidarity shoots like lightning through my palm, up my arm, and fills my heart with a warmth I have only been able to experience with my older sister. “You know me well,” she says."" I can't wait to read the next book!
If you are looking for a beautifully written love story look no further than What the Heart Wants, you won’t be disappointed this book has all the feels you want and expect in a emotional, heartfelt love story. This is Suda Kaye Ross’s story it’s about the woman who is a free spirit and the people she leaves behind when she takes off on her travels.... Suda has been traveling for 10 years and she has avoided going home and facing her sister Evie and Cam the man who stole a piece of her heart. Every year on her birthday wherever she is in the world she opens a letter from her mother, all of which were written prior to her mother’s death but the last letter has her heading for home, but what will be waiting for her 10 years down the line....... This book ticked all my boxes, it has the perfect mix of love, passion and angst, it’s a story about discovery, forgiveness, family and making amends. It’s about learning to love yourself as well as others and I highly recommend What the Heart Wants to all romance lovers. Wonderful, emotional, captivating read that I fell in love with.
It’s 7:30am - I have not slept - but I am happy! I (stupidly) thought I’d read the first couple of chapters before bed. Such a bad idea...... I tried to put the book down around 4am, I lay wide awake for nearly 2 hours before conceding defeat and promptly picked it back up. I cried tears of love, joy, sadness and heartbreak. Beautifully written in a way that really connects to your heart and soul, the characters are so real that you believe these people could exist outside this book and if they did you would want to be part of their world. Thank you Audrey, you obviously put a piece of your soul into every one of your books, fragments of your heart to each character and add a sprinkling of sass for good measure!
