It takes a lot of creativity and skill to make a reader believe that two characters who are enemies can transition to love. Especially two smart, strong, independent characters who are leery of trusting others. But Lauren Smith does just that in Wicked Rivals, the latest in her League of Rogues series. Distrust is no match for desire, and wondering if they’ll kiss or throttle each other makes seeing their romance develop all the more delicious.
Ashton Lennox was known for his power and his relentlessness in pursuing it. He’d become a wealthy man because he put business before everything, especially love. And he excelled at business. Until he met Rosalind Melbourne, that is. She was troublesome. She’d spent the last several months stealing bids on shipping lines and purchasing other companies by underbidding him. If she were a man, he would admire her. But she wasn’t a man. She was a beautiful, fiery, Scottish woman that pushed him out of control. And Ashton was always in control. It was more than just a matter of pride for him. Lady Melbourne’s companies were being used by Sir Hugo Waverly, the enemy of the League of Rogues, who had made their last year hell. Ash needed to take control of Lady Melbourne’s companies so he could analyze her business activities and see how Waverly was linked to them. The league was changing now that half of the members were married. With the addition of women and children to the league, it would be easier for Waverly to harm those they loved most. And Ashton wouldn’t rest until they were safe. Ash had offered to buy out Rosalind’s shares and go about his business but she’d undermined his efforts. So Ash was left with only one option. He stopped all her credit at the banks and purchased her debts. Now her fate lay in his hands.
Rosalind Melbourne had escaped her tyrannical father by marrying an aging English lord. In the year she had been married, her husband had tutored her in business strategies and banking. After his death, his companies had become her empire and would stay hers unless she remarried. After living most of her life at the hands of an abusive father, she was done letting men dictate her life. If she wanted to defeat Ashton, she’d need to find his weakness. They’d had one brief, intimate encounter in an alcove at the theater. Ash had lost control but she’d managed to keep hers. She could win again. To protect what was hers, she’d play the game of seduction. She’d only been with her late husband but his touch had never affected her the way Ash did that night in the theater. She’d built her business with cunning and intelligence, not her body. But a lady must fight with whatever weapons she had.
When Rosalind collapsed at Ashton’s estate after trekking through mud and rain to confront him, Ashton’s victory felt hollow. He had to find a way to achieve his goals without causing her further harm. Since his mother assumed by Rosalind’s presence at his estate that he was courting her, Ash seized the opportunity to keep his mother from parading eligible ladies in front of him. And so the games of wooing and seduction began. And it seemed that everyone was in on the game, offering their own suggestions and schemes. But Ash and Rosalind quickly realized that pretending to be attracted to someone was entirely different when one actually was attracted to that person. Two days prior, they were ready to kill each other and now it was feigned courtship and real kisses. And oh, those kisses! It was easy to get lost in them. There was no haste. Just slow, deliberate passion. Ash made Rosalind feel wild and reckless, as though all her worries and fears faded when he touched her. Ash had never had a woman affect him like Rosalind did. When he kissed her, he nearly lost his mind. With the way they were together, Ash was beginning to feel things would be pleasurable if they did end up marrying. Besides, with Rosalind as his wife, he could protect her while he investigated how Waverly was using her. And so he pushed the idea with Rosalind. She knew marrying Ash would give her power, wealth, and protection, but he failed to offer the two things she valued most. Love and freedom. Their kisses were built on more than mutual pleasure though. And there was a growing understanding and affection between them. As much as they loved to challenge each other, there was an intensity to the moments when they seemed perfectly in tune with each other. Could they have a new beginning? A chance to start over? As partners, not rivals.
This is one of the most enthralling series I’ve ever read. With each book we learn a little more about the members of the league and the villain who is determined to destroy them. Each story is filled with passion, intrigue, betrayal, forgiveness, and trust. And this newest addition is extra delightful because of the enemies –to- lovers trope. It’s so exciting to watch the gradual transformation of feelings. Watching that animosity slowly give away to respect, friendship, and passion. Two characters who are brave enough to tear down their barriers and risk loving someone they didn’t initially trust, shows great courage and they seem even more deserving of their happily ever after. I also love the way Lauren Smith whets our appetite for future stories with little morsels like the growing attraction between Jonathan and Audrey, and the sizzling connection between Ashton’s sister and Rosalind’s brother. The possibilities are endless! Which means there are many more great stories to come. I am more than ready to read every single one! A Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team Selection.
