Lord Ashton Lennox : Impitoyable. Acharné. Puissant.

Lauren Smith returns to The League of Rogues with another absolutely outstanding addition to the series. Book four; Wicked Rivals gives us Lord Ashton Lennox’s story, and once again it was a thrill-a-minute adventure.
I absolutely love this series, every book offers up a different couple’s story, whilst still expanding and developing on the secondary longer running plot-line involving Hugo Waverly and his obsession with getting rid of the League members and their loved ones, as well as the reasonings to why.
Control was his foremost weapon, and his first line of defence. Where other men lost their bodies to passions, their minds to obsessions and their hearts to love, he always stayed in control of himself…
As with all the previous couples, Ashton and Rosalind both have their own agendas at the beginning of the book, some of the issues between them are actually tied to the nefarious Waverly, but neither of them know the full story or back ground of the other completely. So when Ashton steps in and takes control of Rosalind’s debts from the bank, which in essence means he holds the control of all of her business interests as well, he is taking more from Rosalind than he initially realizes. That control he is so certain of though, seems to have a habit of slipping somewhat when they are in close proximity to each other, and with sensual and sexy results more often than not.
"Everything is business with you. Details, facts, figures. All of it so cold and emotionless."
Once again the author manages to weave so much into the fabric of this story that you are literally kept on your toes for its whole telling. New characters are introduced (three burly Scots, whom I hope against hope will at some point get their own books) and although a few questions are answered, a lot of new ones are raised. The plot moves along at a really steady pace, and once again I just couldn’t stop reading for all of the excitement and surprises that are delivered through its telling.
"Even when you drive me mad, I still want you."
I loved Rosalind Melbourne, Lauren always manages to keep her female characters in this series, in keeping with the period, whilst giving them really strong and sassy personalities. They are intelligent women who know what they want and are not afraid to step up and say exactly what they feel and go after what they desire, usually one of the Rogues, and always with unexpected results.
"You can’t run away every time. Some day you will have to talk to me."
I am so happy that Lauren has carried on with the Rogues series, even with the partial demise of Samhain (its original publisher)this is a series that has got the legs to carry itself through indie publishing and onwards in my opinion, and although things develop further for the League and their enemies in Wicked Rivals the story as a whole is nowhere near being finished, and I cannot wait for the next adventure the author gives them.
"The battle is far from over."
ARC generously provided by the author, and it was my absolute pleasure to provide the above honest review.
'Wicked Rivals' by Lauren Smith is book four in "The League of Rogues" series. This is the story of Ashton Lennox and Rosalind Melbourne. I have read most of the books in this series but I easily felt this was a standalone book. Rosalind is a widower who has taken on running her late husband's business..and doing a great job at it. Ashton is a business rival and is taken with Rosalind..but he is tired of her taking some of his business away. Also he thinks a old enemy is working with her or using her. So Ashton set out to take over her debits and try to 'own her' as he put it. Rosalind is so mad at Ashton she take off after him and she finds herself caught at his house with his mother, sister and his friends. This leads to Ashton thinking that he should marry her and setting this attraction between them. Also this will get him control over her business. This was such a fun, hot read! I am just in love with this whole series! Ms. Smith has become one of my favorite authors! "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."
I really loved writing this book because I got to explore Ashton's character. Up till now he's been a quiet, calm presence in the league of rogues, now an I get to delve into his backstory, and his family history and show how tender hearted and strong souled he was. He is a man who feels deeply, still waters run deep. And I loved exposing his love for Rosalind and how she is much the same as him in her heart. Their love story was wonderful and moving and impossibly sweet. I enjoyed every minute of writing their happy ending! I also loved writing about Rosalind as a female business woman and a powerful banker. What people may not realize is that women have been involved in running and even owning banks as far back as 1700. History likes to paint women as powerless and having no involvement in businesses, but it wasn't true. They actually did!! And I got to research all of that when I wrote Rosalind's history and her business connections.
This was going to be a solid 4 star read and probably my favorite book of the series...until the final pages. Then wham!!
Ashton Lennox
Why is it that the bad guy keeps getting over on the entire League of Rogues? After this book I'm inclined to call them the League of Idiots? Lets see, we have a Duke, a Viscount, a Marquess, and three other rich influential men. Yet one man, Sir Hugo, is consistently ahead of them in all things.
He has spies in their homes, and in their businesses. And when the League finally gets the upper hand, the good guys go and do something I totally disagree with allowing Hugo to get away yet again!!! Horrible!!
The love story was spot on and very enjoyable. Too bad it was over shadowed by Sir Hugo.
This is the fourth book in Lauren Smith’s wonderfully entertaining League of Roguesseries. Three of the rogues have succumbed to the parson’s noose and now the same fate awaits Ashton. Meanwhile their adversary, Hugo Waverly, continues to plot his revenge against the League members.
Ashton Lennox has always put his family first and has done everything to care for and protect them. When his father died in scandalous circumstances, leaving the family socially and financially ruined, young Ashton returned home and worked hard to rebuild both the family’s wealth and social standing in society.
I admire Ashton for his devotion to his family, particularly as they have never fully appreciated everything he had done, especially his mother. Her reaction was to tell him that his need for money and power made him just like his father. Her cutting words had left him hurt and angry and his relationship with his mother had been one of icy coldness from then on and he rarely goes home.
Apart from his family, the League is the most important thing in his life. As the oldest member, he feels a duty to protect the other members and is the most cool-headed of them. Ms Smith always writes the camaraderie between these men so well. Despite the witty banter, the close bond that exists is evident to see and, when danger threatens, they will always be there for each other.
When it comes to running his business, Ashton is ruthless, controlling and determined. That is how he has built up his wealth.
He had learned how to make men do his bidding with a cool stare and an imperious tone.
But, for the past several months, a certain Lady Rosalind Melbourne has been outmanoeuvring him on several of his deals. He also suspects that Hugo Waverly is using Rosalind’s companies for some nefarious reason. To find out, he needs to get control of the company’s books and records and so he buys up Rosalind’s debts and arranges for the banks to stop her credit, thus controlling her and her business. However, unaware of the real reason for Ashton’s actions, Rosalind is furious and determined to face him.
Anger and panic rippled through her, dueling for dominance. That damned bloody Englishman. She wanted to strangle him, but the truth of her situation was dire. He had full control over her and was toying with her the way a cat would a mouse. Something had to be done.
Rosalind grew up with an abusive father and three brothers. Her brothers did their best to protect her from their father’s brutality, but, after one particularly bad beating, she runs away from home. After stumbling into a tavern, she meets the elderly but kind Lord Melbourne who immediately marries her. He teaches her about business strategies and banking and instills in her the confidence and knowledge she needs to successfully run Melbourne, Shelly and Company which she inherits after his death. She is now in control of her own life and enjoys the mental challenges of running the companies. She has no desire to remarry and lose the freedom to choose her own destiny and I could understand why she is so furious with Ashton. She fears losing everything she has strived for and revealing the vulnerability which lies beneath her tough business-like exterior
…two reluctant hearts starved for love and yet afraid to grasp at it.
At first, Ashton is unwilling to trust Rosalind. She is far too cunning and just as ruthless as he is. Rosalind sees Ashton only as a cold, calculating business man but this does not stop the attraction that simmers between them. I like how their time spent together at Ashton’s estate allows them to view each other in a very different light; to see the real person they hide from the world.
Rosalind is surprised by Ashton’s kindness in opening his home to simple farm folk when their homes are burnt down and by her discovery that he can be sweet and playful.
This side of him caught her off guard. Never in her wildest dreams would she have imagined the cool, collected man to be so… playful.
I love how, once he discovers the abuse Rosalind suffered, he wants to protect, care for and spoil Rosalind and give her the happiness she deserves. He also finds he enjoys being with an intelligent, free-thinking woman with whom he can enjoy interesting conversations. He had always thought he wanted to marry a woman who was sweet and would bow to his judgement but perhaps…
It would be quite a stimulating experience to be married to Rosalind and share his life with her. They could ride, plan business decisions, even take long walks in a pleasant silence together.
Look out for the game of “strip” chess when Rosalind gambles not only her future but her clothes too!!
There is a point where a Happy Ever After seems imminent but, of course, Ashton’s deception raises its ugly head and Rosalind understandably feels betrayed. To complicate matters further, Rosalind’s burly brothers decide to “rescue” her from Ashton’s clutches but, of course, everything comes right in the end.
Hugo Waverly continues to plot his revenge with the help of spies and it was shocking to discover just how close to the League these spies are. For the first time, the League have evidence to expose Waverly but circumstances force them to make a difficult choice.
There are many intriguing secondary characters, among them is League member Charles and I think I have an inkling of the identity of his heroine (there again, my guesses have been known to be way off the mark). The Jonathan/Audrey (Cedric’s hellion sister) and the possible Brock (Rosalind’s brother) and Joanna (Ashton’s sister) pairings should prove entertaining. Charles’s servant, Tom Linley, has always been an enigma for me but even more so now, given the disclosures in this book.
MY VERDICT: After I’ve finished a book in this series, I always find myself eagerly waiting for the next one. If you enjoy great characters and the right blend of romance, humour and action, then I can recommend this entertaining series.
League of Rogues series so far (click on the book cover for more details):
This review is also posted on my Rakes and Rascals blog:
Oh my rogues! This series is getting better by each book. I have been waiting for this for a while now to see how the rivals got along together...or not. As the oldest and most cool-headed rogue of the League, Ashton, Lord Lennox, keeps the group from being completely crazy or completely reckless, at least most of the time. Rosalind, Lady Melbourne has been his business rival and Ashton has had enough so he ends up making some deals and transactions and ends up owning Rosalind in a certain sense. She ends up being forced to spend time with him and although he is really irritating at times, time with a rogue can be quite the adventure. She also may have information about Sir Hugo Waverly, the League's greatest enemy so that means Ashton will do whatever he deems necessary to win over his rival.
Ashton and Rosalind shouldn't really work but they do. Ashton is usually calm, collected, level-headed. To his friends and loved ones, he will do anything and everything he can to protect them and is deeply loyal to them. When it comes to business, Ashton is ruthless, determined, cold and calculating. Rosalind has only seen the business side of him. So she struggles to accept the kinder and sweeter side of Ashton. I would too seeing as he has been nothing but ridiculous towards her. Then there is Rosalind who is widowed, a top businesswoman, and wants more than anything to keep her freedom she has earned. She left home to stay far away from her abusive father even though she had to leave her three older brothers behind. She has to stay strong all the time and Ashton really gets under her skin. She really challenges his control as well so they are balanced in many ways. Somehow they work so well together and find a compromise one way or another. Can you say strip chess? Seriously, they play strip chess to bargain marriage, and clothes of course.
It is kind of disturbing how far Waverly's reach is. He has spies everywhere. I seriously mean everywhere, like in the League's homes. Crazy. He is so powerful and dang determined to destroy the League. I am really concerned for them now. I will say what they did at the end of the story was very honorable considering the circumstances. Let's just leave it at that.
I think Jonathan is turning into my favorite Rogue. He is a little less devious and wicked than the others and I like how he is enjoying his life as part of the ton now but he hasn't really changed. He is still loyal and sweet, especially with Audrey. She is a handful and I'm sure their story will be a lot of fun. Also I hope there will be more scenes with the Scottish hunk, Brock and Ashton's sister Joanna. After how they met, I am hoping for some serious fire between them. lol
There are a lot of compromises, lots of kisses and I couldn't get enough. I believe the next book will focus on Jonathan and Audrey which will be hilarious I'm sure. Can't wait for the next one.
I received this ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely adore Lauren Smith's work! She has such an amazing power with her words. I had a ridiculously good time reading this story. The entire premise of this story was so much fun. From one page to another you have no clue whether the MCs are gonna kiss or back-slap each other. FUN, I TELL YA! And what is best about Wicked Rivals, is that the progression from enemies (and I mean ENEMIES lol) to lovers (and I mean SPITFIRE lovers lol) happened slowly. It almost happens before your eyes and you don't see it happening. Again, power with words :)
I read this series out of order and altho I can't say I am disappointed in any of the books, I am disappointed that I did not read them in order. Because the League itself grows from book to book. It's a story arc of sorts and it's integral to the series so if you're new to this series, I would recommend starting at the beginning. You're going to want to read them all anyways, might as well start with the first book firat :) lol
This was a very strong heroine. She goes toe to toe with the hero and they are rivals trying to dominate one another. Their whole relationship is ferocious and that is also brought to the romance.
I enjoyed seeing that they are getting closer to do something about the villain and that end made me wish violence towards him. Ugh!
Now I need to figure out if I need to read all the books in sequence because the next 3 books are novellas.
I'm really mad at this. The Rosalind who could hold her own and even best Ashton in the previous books was replaced by a shrill woman who just needs the right man to make her do what's good for her to be happy. WTF?! This entire book was just Ashton forcing her to do things against her will and the story justifies it because she secretly likes it and is attracted to him against her will. I'm sorry, but that's cheesy Harlequin romance levels of stupid.
First, Ashton buys up all of Rosalind's debt and essentially owns her. Then, when a desperate Rosalind shows up, he forces her to pretend to be his fiancee, using her companies as the bargaining chip. Then, he decides to he wants to marry her, despite Rosalind hating the idea of marriage and being owned by a man, and instead of wooing her, he takes advantage of her TSTL moment where she falls for an obvious trick of his brother's and essentially forces her to marry him. Every disagreement is Ashton using his position of power over her to force her to do what he wants. Oh, but that's okay. See, she secretly wants it and this is actually good for her she just doesn't know it yet and everyone knows she's going to enjoy living in the country because it looks like Scotland and Ashton secretly loves her and he'll eventually give her control of her companies even though she doesn't know that and he's willing to throw her a bone once in a while and asked for her opinion that one time... So all's well that ends well, right? NO. NO, NO, NO. This is bullshit. Everything about this is bullshit. I want to strangle everyone in this story. Including Rosalind.
I haven't even touched on the whole "I don't want to kiss/have sex with you!" "Really? Let me force you. See you actually like it" "Huh. I didn't want to like it but now I realize this is actually what I want." I enjoy rape fantasies as much as the next girl, but those stories are self aware enough to know it's wrong. I can't stand it when everyone including the author treats this as perfectly okay behavior. "Because she likes it and just doesn't know it" is one of the most pretentious things I've ever had said to me and I can't believe this book treats it has a legitimate reason. Bodily autonomy is important, especially around people who can over power you. When Rosalind says, "Put me down," I expect Ashton to put her down. If he doesn't, I expect the book to condemn his behavior. What I didn't expect was the book thinking this was just normal alpha male behavior. No, it's abusive asshole behavior.
"I voluntarily received an ARC at no cost from the author”
This is book four in Lauren Smith's League Of Rogues series. Each book has been great, so I highly recommend the entire series.
Oh my -- I absolutely LOVED Ashton. He is the rogue who was always in control of himself and whatever situation he found himself in. Every move is calculated, evaluated, planned and then executed with precision. So, when a little Scots widow (Rosalind Melbourne) starts competing (and winning) with him in various business deals, he decides he better check things out. Of course, he finds that she has ties to the villain of the series. In order to be able to legally check her books and other business dealings, he buys up her debts and gains control over her businesses.
To say that she wasn't pleased is putting it mildly. She heads out to his estate to clear things up and the story goes from there. I won't tell you the details, because that would spoil the story an you really need to read it for yourself!!! Let's just say that their trip to the HEA is far from smooth. It includes deadly illnesses, near drownings, kidnappings and shootings. It is definitely far from smooth and steady.
They almost get the bad guy in the end -- but -- of course, if they did that there wouldn't be any reason for the next two books in the series. I'm looking forward to the book featuring Charles because he is the most damaged of the lot of them and I'd love for him to find a happy ending. I believe there are only supposed to be two more books in the series, but I'd sure like to see HEA's for Rosalind's brothers (I really liked them), Ashton's sister and Cedric's sister (actually I think she'll get her HEA with Jonathon).
I surely hope you'll read this book and this series because all of them are good.
- Again, a supercharged romance. - I loved Rosiland & Ashton. - Epic romance with an epic grovel. - I thought there would be more bed-breaking sex, they screamed dirty, and I needed them to deliver. - The mystery is unravelling now...
This was a great addition to The League of Rogues series, but fear not if you haven't read any of them yet because Ashton and Rosalind's story can be read as a standalone. Rosalind is a strong female character which is a rarity in historical romance stories. I guess that is why I enjoy Lauren Smith's books so much, she has a way of making her men strong and her women even stronger.
Regency Romance . Book four in the Legue of Rogues . Hero is Ashton ( a mastermind businessman ) . Heroine is Rosalind. More of the review over the weekend . This story will blow you away and reveal parts that you will never guess. Will Rosalind fall for Aston legendary charm and lover like skills . Will Ashton have Rosaline right where he wants her on her knees begging him . Grab it and see
Fantastic! Been waiting excitedly for Ash's story, and it didn't disappoint. Wonderful plot, immensely enjoyable list of characters, what else do you need? Superb writing again by Lauren Smith - she blows my mind! The cover is gorgeous, and I loved every single word! A massive 5*****
It takes a lot of creativity and skill to make a reader believe that two characters who are enemies can transition to love. Especially two smart, strong, independent characters who are leery of trusting others. But Lauren Smith does just that in Wicked Rivals, the latest in her League of Rogues series. Distrust is no match for desire, and wondering if they’ll kiss or throttle each other makes seeing their romance develop all the more delicious.
Ashton Lennox was known for his power and his relentlessness in pursuing it. He’d become a wealthy man because he put business before everything, especially love. And he excelled at business. Until he met Rosalind Melbourne, that is. She was troublesome. She’d spent the last several months stealing bids on shipping lines and purchasing other companies by underbidding him. If she were a man, he would admire her. But she wasn’t a man. She was a beautiful, fiery, Scottish woman that pushed him out of control. And Ashton was always in control. It was more than just a matter of pride for him. Lady Melbourne’s companies were being used by Sir Hugo Waverly, the enemy of the League of Rogues, who had made their last year hell. Ash needed to take control of Lady Melbourne’s companies so he could analyze her business activities and see how Waverly was linked to them. The league was changing now that half of the members were married. With the addition of women and children to the league, it would be easier for Waverly to harm those they loved most. And Ashton wouldn’t rest until they were safe. Ash had offered to buy out Rosalind’s shares and go about his business but she’d undermined his efforts. So Ash was left with only one option. He stopped all her credit at the banks and purchased her debts. Now her fate lay in his hands. Rosalind Melbourne had escaped her tyrannical father by marrying an aging English lord. In the year she had been married, her husband had tutored her in business strategies and banking. After his death, his companies had become her empire and would stay hers unless she remarried. After living most of her life at the hands of an abusive father, she was done letting men dictate her life. If she wanted to defeat Ashton, she’d need to find his weakness. They’d had one brief, intimate encounter in an alcove at the theater. Ash had lost control but she’d managed to keep hers. She could win again. To protect what was hers, she’d play the game of seduction. She’d only been with her late husband but his touch had never affected her the way Ash did that night in the theater. She’d built her business with cunning and intelligence, not her body. But a lady must fight with whatever weapons she had. When Rosalind collapsed at Ashton’s estate after trekking through mud and rain to confront him, Ashton’s victory felt hollow. He had to find a way to achieve his goals without causing her further harm. Since his mother assumed by Rosalind’s presence at his estate that he was courting her, Ash seized the opportunity to keep his mother from parading eligible ladies in front of him. And so the games of wooing and seduction began. And it seemed that everyone was in on the game, offering their own suggestions and schemes. But Ash and Rosalind quickly realized that pretending to be attracted to someone was entirely different when one actually was attracted to that person. Two days prior, they were ready to kill each other and now it was feigned courtship and real kisses. And oh, those kisses! It was easy to get lost in them. There was no haste. Just slow, deliberate passion. Ash made Rosalind feel wild and reckless, as though all her worries and fears faded when he touched her. Ash had never had a woman affect him like Rosalind did. When he kissed her, he nearly lost his mind. With the way they were together, Ash was beginning to feel things would be pleasurable if they did end up marrying. Besides, with Rosalind as his wife, he could protect her while he investigated how Waverly was using her. And so he pushed the idea with Rosalind. She knew marrying Ash would give her power, wealth, and protection, but he failed to offer the two things she valued most. Love and freedom. Their kisses were built on more than mutual pleasure though. And there was a growing understanding and affection between them. As much as they loved to challenge each other, there was an intensity to the moments when they seemed perfectly in tune with each other. Could they have a new beginning? A chance to start over? As partners, not rivals.
This is one of the most enthralling series I’ve ever read. With each book we learn a little more about the members of the league and the villain who is determined to destroy them. Each story is filled with passion, intrigue, betrayal, forgiveness, and trust. And this newest addition is extra delightful because of the enemies –to- lovers trope. It’s so exciting to watch the gradual transformation of feelings. Watching that animosity slowly give away to respect, friendship, and passion. Two characters who are brave enough to tear down their barriers and risk loving someone they didn’t initially trust, shows great courage and they seem even more deserving of their happily ever after. I also love the way Lauren Smith whets our appetite for future stories with little morsels like the growing attraction between Jonathan and Audrey, and the sizzling connection between Ashton’s sister and Rosalind’s brother. The possibilities are endless! Which means there are many more great stories to come. I am more than ready to read every single one! A Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team Selection.
I went back and fourth in my head weather to give Wicked Rivals 3 stars or 4 star. But I loved the chemistry between Ashton Lennox and Rosalind Melbourne. They made great business rivals that turned into a great love. They had the sheets sizzling. The way they realize they are falling in love instead of trying to become business partners was well done. There banter with each other was believable . Great characters and storyline. Well Done!!
However at times it doesn't seem like the story is in Regency Era. Rosalind sleeping in Ashton bed at his home with his mother and sister was not believable for times. This would not have been allowed even if they were engaged. The other problem that dragged the story down is Hugo Waverly the villain!! When will he finally be caught and hung drawn and quarter. He always seems to outsmart the League of Rogues.
Other then that this is a very good story and I enjoyed reading it. I also, enjoyed revisiting the League of Rogues and there Lady Society wives.
Lady Society is issuing a challenge to Lord Lennox. She can’t help but think he is afraid of a certain lady who is in direct competition with him. You cannot hide forever behind your fleet of ships, nor can you call upon your friends for support. The League of Rogues are fast succumbing to the charms of Eros and taking wives. Perhaps they know something you choose to remain ignorant of? ~ The Quizzing Glass Gazette
“Wicked Rivals” book #4 of Lauren Smith’s “League of Rogues” series was a delightfully enjoyable read chock full of angst, adventure, romance and wicked sexy times.
Baron Ashton Lennox and Lady Rosalind Melbourne had been two ships headed on a collision course! And once they collided in book #3 the fireworks lit up the English skies and Ashton's trousers! But that was only a mere teaser, a titillating prelude to the events we get to indulge in in their adventure.
So, in book 3 we are introduced to Rosalind, a Scottish lady, a widow, a woman of independent means who thrives running the businesses she inherited from her late husband, Lord Melbourne. Rosalind has a strong head for business and her strategies of securing bids on shipping lines and underbidding her biggest rival, Ashton Lennox has made her a major target of his.
The woman was a menace. He’d done everything a reasonable man could do by offering to buy out her shares and attempting to go about his own business, but she’d undermined his every effort—or more to the point, every legal effort. Had she been a man, he would have admired her tactics, the way she outflanked him, outmaneuvered him at every turn.
But she wasn’t a man, she was a woman—an intoxicating, beautiful, infuriating menace of a woman, with a fiery Scottish temper that pushed him out of his own control.
Naturally, not wanting or wishing to be outplayed, outsmarted nor outwitted, Ashton declares full out war against Rosalind first and foremost by crippling her financially. Not one to be pushed or bullied Rosalind is determined to regain full control of her businesses even if she must go as far as seducing the rogue himself.
“It is the folly of men. You believe you understand our feminine minds and hearts, that we’re simple creatures who crave new gowns and attending balls and that we have no thoughts or opinions or desires that match or exceed your own.”
These two were hot, HOT, H.O.T together!!! Yes. They. Were!
It was the way he kissed, as if he had all day to explore her. There was not a hint of haste. Just slow, deliberate passion, potent and drugging.
“You are mine. And I care for what’s mine. I pleasure what’s mine.”
And just throwing this out there…the chess game was O.M.G!
The usual controlled, cool as the other side of the pillow, unaffected Lord Lennox had at last met his undoing!
Control was his foremost weapon and his first line of defense. Where other men lost their bodies to passions, their minds to obsessions and their hearts to love, he always stayed in control of himself.
It was great to see the 4th League of Rogues member open up his reserved heart to a woman who challenged and tested him at every turn yet stoked such a fire in him that he couldn't resist her and what ensued was a tale of what the meaning of true love is.
If there was one thing Godric, Lucien and Cedric had taught him, it was that the happiness found when one combined a well-matched husband and wife was not a matter of addition—it was multiplication.
This installment continues following the revenge plot of Hugo Waverly against the League. We are given more clues as to what happened the night Charles was rescued from drowning and Peter’s death. Waverly has been successful in planting his moles, infiltrating deep inside the League's “protected” walls. His spies are gaining the League's confidence whilst reporting their every move to their arch nemesis. Waverly is closing in on the League ready to do away with the lot just when the League had an opportunity and had HIM on the ropes! GRRRR!!!
There are great secondary characters and story lines that flow nicely through the book namely, Jonathan's and Audrey's budding relationship. We also get a cliffhanger with Brock and Joanna. Can't wait to see how these turn about!
Lauren Smith continues to dazzle bringing a tale of adventure, love, friendship, loyalty and discovery into a tantalizing hard to put down novel!
I cannot wait to dive into the next book which features Audrey Sheridan and her unquenchable thirst for adventure!
I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I detest Ashton, he is the lowest, slimiest, most foul creature to ever emerge. He is a ruthless businessman, yet when someone else (Rosalind) comes alone and uses those same tactics (under bidding the opponent) he has a tantrum like a petulant child. So he decides he will corner Rosalind at the theatre and talk sense into her. When that fails he tries to seduce her. When that fails, as Ashton becomes the one seduced, he decides to further perpetrate his low-brow self by extorting illegal demands from the banks through intimidation. All of these attempts are supposedly justified because Ashton's long-standing rival utilizes Rosalind's business for -legitimate purposes-. This man is utterly despicable in every way.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was so glad to see Ashton was getting his own story and was not disappointed. Rosalind and Ashton are perfect for each other even though they don't realize it. Like the other books, I never knew what was going to happen and I couldn't wait to see what would happen between them and with Waverly. I loved how many people were trying to put them together and at first, it was just about saving their own businesses, but it turned into more. I was shocked to learn she might hold the key to saving the league and loved how it all ended. The chess game was a favorite.
Rosalind is one of my favorite heroines. She is a strong business woman and won't let anyone control her. I loved her from the start because she fought for what she wanted and could compete with the men in more ways than one.
Ashton took his business dealing serious and not out of greed. I loved how he thought about things and the way he protected his family. His past explained a lot about him and why he fought so hard in business.
I loved meeting both of their families. His family is very unique and you have to love his mother and sister. Her brothers would do anything to protect her even after all this time. I can't wait to see what will happen in the next book.
Why write reviews when others do it so well. I loved this book because of Ashton and Rosilands rivalry and hot hot chemistry. Ashton is the chess player of the League of Rogues and I would want his protection above all the other Rogues.
Romanzo straconsigliato.
3.5 stars. This is an entertaining read, but so over the top I almost didn’t get past the beginning. So, this poor woman, Rosalind, who has the gall to compete in business with Lord Ashton, has her business stolen, is forced to come to his home to ‘negotiate’. On her way, her coach breaks a wheel in the pouring rain, and then is held up. And then she ends up walking three miles in the rain to collapse at Lord Ashton’s door. This is followed by a very risqué scene where he places her unconscious and uncovered body into a hot bath to revive her. Ok, if you can get past this, it gets somewhat better. Of course, there is a behind the scenes baddy spy, very 007, who represents ultimate evil who is manipulating everything behind the scenes.
The evolution of Rosalind and Ashton’s relationship is entertaining and interesting. Still, Ashton is one cold, controlling bastard. He proves that he has a heart. But really? He is a tough customer. Loved Ashton’s sister and Rosalind’s Scottish brothers. It’s all very madcap and mayhem. Possibly your cup of tea.
I kept picking up and putting this book down. I was so angry at the "Hero" the first few times I tried to read it that I wouldn't pick it back up. The way he treated Rosalind by talking to the bankers to refuse to extend her credit and kept saying he "owned" her was maddening to me. I really didn't like him until the book was almost finished. I did however think the H&H had excellent chemistry together and I like the closeness of the other characters from past books.
I haven't read any of the other books to know the other characters but I would like to, as long as the heroes aren't as selfish and domineering as this one.

"Wicked Rivals" by Lauren Smith, book four of The League of Rogues . Cover: 5/5 (new cover) Story: 3.5/5 Steam: 🔥 🔥 🔥 (being generous here. +kissing, interrupted scene, short scene not counted) Ending: HEA but ends with a cliffhanger . Stand Alone or Series: Definitely read in order as a series. . London, Regency (1821) Ruthless Shipping Baron Scottish Shipping Heiress Adversaries to Lovers Marriage of Convience Widowed Lady Meddling Mother Possessive Hero Danger & Peril Old School HR Feel . The League of Rogues series deep dives into some very dark themes which some readers may find disturbing or difficult. If you are looking for or are a fan of light-hearted, magic-feeling historical romances, this is, most likely, not the series for you. However, if you enjoy complex plotlines, danger, and darker themes along with steamy romance, read on.
Rosalind has been on my mind since she was introduced in book three. Her interaction with Ash in that book is, phew. It's steamy! This is the first time we are encountering a non-English main character in the series, and I enjoyed something a bit different with this book. While some of the other heroines in this book have traumatic backstories, I feel Smith went more in-depth with Rosalind's backstory here. This made Rosalind feel like more of a full-rounded, multi-faceted Heroine.
Overall, Ash and Rosalind certainly had an interesting romantic storyline, and I found how they first end up in close proximity to each other to be pretty unique. The reason they end up together isn't a super common occurrence in HRs. My one real hold-up is I would have liked to see them stay adversaries for longer. Ash gives Rosalind a major reason to despise him, and I feel as though she forgave him for what he did to her too early. I missed the tension!
We have slowly been seeing more of Hugo- a villain throughout the last three books- and learning more about him. His issues run far deeper than just with The League, and I find myself more and more curious about what is going on with him.
Random Thoughts While Reading:
Chess has never been sexier.
Here come the Scots!
Someone always gets into a brawl in these books.
As for steam, Smith uses a mixture of explicit and alluded-to terms. The scenes are a bit short. Variety of acts and scene lengths. Some readers may feel a scene involves dubious consent. . Read as a physical copy book. Honest review left voluntarily. . Content Warning (may contain spoilers): . . . . . I was definitely intrigued by the glimpse of Ash and Lady Melbourne in the previous book and I was really looking forward to Wicked Rivals.
During the time period when these stories take place, a woman in a position of power and running a successful business occurs on rare occasion but is still fairly unheard of so the widow Lady Rosalind Melbourne is a bit of an enigma. The cocky and arrogant Ashton cannot believe this woman has the audacity to try to best him in the business world, and the fact that she is succeeding infuriates him. He decides to take some heavy handed and fairly ruthless steps to ensure her business partnership with the Rogues' sworn enemy Waverly does not result in his own financial ruin. After all, he has faced destitution once and fought his way back so he has no desire to go there again.
Rosalind can't help but be stunned by lengths Ash is going to, and she responds with righteous fury. She escaped an abusive and controlling environment in the past and she refuses to allow any man to have control of her life ever again - especially not a horse's rear like Ashton Lennox.
Ash and Rosalind are far too similar for their own good and the battle of wills between them won't be pretty as neither one can tolerate losing. What starts out as a calculated seduction ends up turning both of them on their heads though, and hurts of the past threaten to bury any chance they may have at a future. Add in the complete dislike and utter distrust of Rosalind by Charles, a fellow Rogue and one of Ash's best friends, and it is guaranteed to get ugly.
As much as I wanted to like this book, I had a very difficult time getting into it to the point that I almost DNF'D it at the 30% mark. Ash was far from likeable, and with a constant game of oneupmanship that got old fast, I was having a hard time connecting to either character enough to really want to continue. But after stepping away for a few days and coming back to it, I did end up sticking with it to the finish. Although that did give me perspective on and insight into Ash's seemingly cold hearted demeanor and Rosalind's fear of anyone being in control of her destiny, I would have to call this just an okay read for me at best. Their more intimate moments and experiences toward the last part of the book pulled me in enough to give this 3.5 stars in the end.
I am addicted to this series...these Rogues...and their adventures. I always recommend them!
Ashton Lennox always prided himself for his astute business practices. His skills were finely tuned and honed -- and he always got his deal. That is until Lady Rosalind Melbourne came upon the scene. Her savvy business acumen sparked more than his interest.
Could Ashton finally have met the one woman that could inspire him to the one thing he has avoided at all costs...marriage??
Wonderfully written. Great story - full of twists, turns, and fun. I cannot get enough of these Rogues. Five stars!
