Dark Fae FBI #1

Agent of Enchantment

Rate this book
The fae live among us. And one of them is a serial killer.

I thought this would be a simple profiling case. Just another Jack-the-Ripper wannabe, prowling London’s streets, searching for easy kills. I was wrong.

This killer is fae, and he’s as elusive as smoke on the wind. But I’m an FBI profiler, and it’s my job to track him down. It doesn’t matter that one of the main suspects--a lethally alluring fae--is trying to seduce me… or kill me, I’m not sure which.

I won’t be stopped, not even when panic roils through the streets of London, or when the police start to suspect me. As I close in on the killer, I follow him to a magical shadow realm that’s like nothing I ever expected, where I’m hunted like prey. Fine. Bring it on. I’m an FBI Agent. And it turns out I have magical powers of my own.

Agent Cassandra Liddell is an FBI forensic psychologist on assignment in London to help them investigate a serial killer who has been copying Jack the Ripper. While there something strange starts to happen that makes her question what she knows leading her to acknowledge the existence of fae. Realizing that the serial killer is fae she struggles to pursue him and must rely on another fae who might just be the killer.

I'm really not sure how to rate this one because I usually try to take the genre into account and the audience the book is meant for when rating. This one is clearly written for someone who likes pleasure reads especially fantasy or crime. It combines a lot of the things people tend to like: serial killers, crime, magic, sex. The fae thing also seems popular right now, most likely because the romantic/sexual potential of a being that feeds off of another's emotions. The book kind of felt like one of those crime shows on TV (like Castle or Bones) but with a supernatural twist and magic added to it, so I think it'll be really enjoyable for people who are into that sort of thing.

I just had a few things that annoyed me like why the heck is Cassandra even in London, do they not have forensic psychologist in England, I know you have to suspend disbelief for fiction but that made me roll my eyes. Also this thing with girls finding supernatural men and instantly falling in lust with them is being stretched pretty thin now, thanks Stephanie Meyer. Cassandra's in dialogue was kind of immature in the beginning too especially the whole thing about cursing. Also what the fuck does seven shades of shit mean that is not the best imagery.

That said I do think the writing was good and the plot line kept my attention until the end. Only really small things annoyed me most of the time and I do think this is something other people might enjoy reading more. I did like it, I just kind of get tired with reading about the same things but that's not the authors fault really I should try to mix it up. So four stars because it's good for what it's supposed to be and I never really had to force myself to keep reading which is nice.

Also this really hasn't anything to do with the book itself but a lot of the books I read take place in London, is it just me or????

FBI agent and profiler, Cassandra Liddell, is sent on assignment to London to help with an investigation into a series of Jack the Ripper copycat killings. Entering London, Cassandra soon discovers that the myths of the fae might be more real than she once believed because there is something behind these killings screaming supernatural.

The storytelling has one of those TV shows that are based on FBI profilers feels to it with a definite supernatural twist.

The team writing really works for Crawford and Rivers. Agent of Enchantment is a great start to the Dark Fae FBI series. I found the characters and plot soli,d with the authors leaving me wanting more. This is definitely a series I will be following.

I received this copy of Agent of Enchantment from C.N Crawford & Alex Rivers. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Agent of Enchantment was a lovely surprise (not to mention I fell in love with the cover - blonde pink hair rullz!).

This is your everyday urban fantasy with really sexy characters, and a kick-arse lady. But she also has some moments of weakness which make her more believable. And I liked that.

What I didn't like was a potential love triangle I'm smelling for the next installment.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

So I had heard about this book from several authors' newsletters, but at some point I apparently decided not to add it to my TBR. Fast forward a month or so and I see it on NetGalley and decide 'why not, it's free'. Famous last words, should have stuck by my original decision.

The low rating for this book isn't because it's poorly written, but because of what I feel to be an overall lack of interesting plot and several tropes that I just cannot stand. If you've been following my updates as I've been reading this you'll see that this book and I did not get off on the right foot, and it actually went downhill from there.

I'm not going to put the following under a spoiler cut because in my opinion they aren't plot spoilers, as they have nothing to do with the murders or who is the murderer [but then again, neither does most of the book].

The book basically starts with the main character getting attacked and almost raped in an alley. Luckily for her a tall dark brooding mysterious possibly evil stranger is there to rescue her! Ugh. As the book continues Cass almost gets raped two more times, because apparently women almost getting raped is a great way to drive the plot forward. It wouldn't be as annoying if she at least got herself out of these situations but 2 out of 3 times she's saved by Roan [aka Mr. Brooding and Possibly Evil]. Speaking of, she spends most of the rest of her time lusting after Roan and leaning in really close to him so her nipples brush across his chest. Seriously, that exact sentence is in this book at least 4 to 5 times. I spent a lot of my time rolling my eyes and skimming.

And then as an afterthought she catches a serial killer I guess. The actual murder investigation takes up maybe like a fourth of the actual page space. Basically this sounded like a promising concept but I wanted urban fantasy, not paranormal romance. And this had way too much 'romance'. If that doesn't bother you then this might be for you but I just found it entirely lacking in substance.

Buddy read with my girl, Jessie 🌙!

Blurb wise I wasn’t really sold. I had a feeling the book might be weird. Mixing two such different kind of stories should have been hard right?
FBI & Fae.
Slightly weird even😂
Wasn’t sure that would blend well.
Plus agents really aren’t my thing in books. Tv-shows though? I devour those kinds👏
But I am so glad I was wrong when it came to this book!
Boy, was I wrong👏

I was pulled right into this glorious world of magic, mirror realms, and Fae.
Of murder, mystery and dazzling attraction.

Cassandra is an agent from the BAU, (whenever I hear the word BAU- I think of Spencer, Morgan, JJ and Penelope from Criminal Minds. Great fucking show btw) who is sent from the agency to assist the London Police force with solving the murders of young women. Murders who are strikingly similar to the “Jack The Rippers” murders.

Nothing is as it seems and Cassandra is doing her best to solve the murders and get justice for these young women.
Not only that she needs to find out what she is, when weird stuff starts happening to her.

Captivating, greatly entertaining and loved the writing.

I truly enjoyed this, and now I'm waiting desperately for the next book, be assured though that the novel doesn't end with a nasty cliff-hanger but injects enough curiosity to maintain the reader's interest. The characters were easily likeable leaving the novel with a feeling of credibility. There's the sexy detective, the sexy tall dark and handsome fae and the problematic local police. She's a bit on the snarky side, but the author manages to insert these comments in just the right places, leaving the strength of the female protagonist to pop her comments in on the sly. Nothing like letting people underestimate you.

The novel has a decent amount of innovation, enough to keep you guessing about just who the fae are around her and what's their agenda.

April Buddy Read (BotM) with the MacHalos.

3.75 stars.

To my surprised I enjoyed this one- I highly recommend the audio! I liked Cassandra the main character quite a bit but her character did get a bit half-cocked as things went on. She was certainly a smart and resourceful woman however, and I'm definitely going to read the other books to see how she gets on.

I found the other characters certainly interesting - there were actually not a ton of others and I hope there isn't any love drama coming up. The setting was really fun, I really love London so no surprise there. I missed having another female character - it was pretty much Cassandra and a few guys.

Wow this was disappointing.

Set in London with an educated grown ass woman and still everything went to shit in a fae made basket.

We start off with a plot, then after a few chapters we go "Fuck the plot! We gonna create more questions to not answer. Even more questions than we already have!" and after that is done we go "shrug, have a blip of the plot cause reasons". K? You covered? No? I wonder why..

Seriously. I knew who the killer was from that one single point that our super duper educated and highly trained heroine completely fucking ignored.

Zero world building for the new realm, zero notices for the new country/city the heroine finds herself in. Things flying out of nowhere to derail everything. No plot after an early point. So many questions created and nothing answered. Zero info on prominent characters.

It was fuck all cause why not? Ugh. What the bloody hell?

And to answer your question: Yes, I know I'm the minority here.

Mon avis en Français

My English review

Agent of Enchantment is the first book in this genre I've read in a while and I enjoyed getting back into the urban fantasy vibe again after a bit of a break from such tales. The story and characters caught my interest from the opening scene and held it until the end. In fact, several nights I read for longer than I should have, wanting to see what would happen next, and I'm feeling tired as I now write this review! The world building is great--I particularly appreciated all the snippets of London history--and the procedural elements came across well too. Yes, it does follow many of the classic urban fantasy tropes, but if you're a fan of this genre, that's what you'll be craving anyway, so I don't think that's an issue as there are sufficient twists to keep the reader's attention. Overall, this is a thrilling start to a new series and I, for one, would be keen to read more of Cassandra and Roan's exploits.

I received this book as a free eBook ARC via NetGalley.

But you know what? This is actually a good book. I was completely taken by surprise. It has a Jericho-Fucking-Barrons (AKA Roan - what is with these Roan/Ronan type bad asses?!) type feel with some fae shit and Jack the Ripper type shit with some CSI and FBI shit going down with Interpol.

Can I get a Fuck Yes?

DNF at 30% because not only was the main love interest that stupid "I hate him, but I love him cliche" but he was also the guy who doesn't explain anything while constantly nagging at the main character. The main character came across as incredibly dull with nothing to distinguish her from other female protagonists of her type, and the magical world was not being revealed in a very interesting way that gave me any reason to care or be intrigued. And I really hate Rowan. I want to punch his stupid condescending face. There's making a character prejudiced for story, and then there's making that the only thing we see while also being the love interest and giving us no reason to want to read on to what happens next.

Ew.

I love that once more the author (s) have definitely delivered. I was able to connevt with characters right away and it never hurts they always have strong female leads who are in no way perfect. Add a little bit of the dark, tortured, twisty and completely yummy male characters and you have a great combination. One of those books I hated putting down to have to do some mundane, daily task. Loved it and cannot wait for the next.

Better than I expected. I really enjoyed the story and I would definitely continue the series. I listened to it through Audible and I wasn't totally satisfied with the narrator. She seemed to read quicker than the story called for. As for the story in general, I was a little disappointed by the language and I heard Cassandra' mantra a few too many times. Otherwise it was good. Cassandra was a little slow to pick up on fae things, but that was probably just to continue the drama.

CN Crawford and Alex Rivers bring another fantastic start to a series with this book. Imagine Criminal Minds and Lost Girl had a book baby, that would be this book.

The mysteries around Jack the Ripper style murders brings the FMC to London where she discovers even more about herself than she bargained for when she arrived.

The MMC is mysterious, brooding and definitely hiding more than the reader finds out in this book, so I’m definitely going to be continuing this series.

I really liked the aspect of mirror magic that was introduced and that the fae gain back their strength by feeding off human emotions

I was totally, and pleasantly, surprised by this book. I am ashamed to admit it, but I actually started out reading this book with the impression that it would irritate me and not really meet, or even exceed, my expectations. I have read countless books of a similar nature: the heroine finds out she has magical powers, and not just any magical powers, but it turns out she is one of the most powerful beings of all time, and of course she happens to catch the eye of a powerful and sexy man. Okay, so in this case she does catch the eye of one of the above-mentioned, but boy, was this book so much more than that.

The execution of the story was brilliant, I so enjoyed how the author portrayed her in such a realistic manner, and how it takes pretty much 3/4 of the book before the heroine can actually (sort of) come to terms with this new magic world and her new magical abilities, and by the end of the book the heroine still humbly acknowledges all the things she does not yet understand and still needs to learn. I can't stand it when books introduce completely human and normal characters, who are introduced to magic on one page, and by the next page they seem to have completely come to terms with their new abilities and, not only that, but have surpassed many other powerful and older beings because of course, they are the "Chosen One".

One of my favourite types of fantasy include stories of the Fae, and the unique portrayal of the Fae in this book did not disappoint. Roan (one of my new book boyfriends), was portrayed in a wonderful manner, and although the book is from the POV of Cassandra (the heroine), his character did not come across as one-dimensional to me, which was great.

This book is also so full of mystery and twists and turns, I was constantly kept guessing, and come the end of the book I was thirsting for more! A great read, and I can't wait to start the next book.

So much unrealized potential. Sad Sad Sad.

It started out all

And went

Quicker than Usain Bolt

I loved the authors voice, the character is independent and snarky, but the story drove me nuts. Probably because I misread the premise. It's called Dark Fae FBI, so I thought the story was going to be about a Fae FBI agent who solves an arcane crime. Which sounded Frigging Awesome.

Boy was I wrong. The character discovers she is Fae and that yes Virginia there is a fairyland. And it is seriously messed up and oh by the way, she's part of it. DURRING the course of an investigation. And turns into a TSTL twit. Talk about false advertising.

The twit stumbles around (alone of course). Inviting all manner of arcane nastys to show her exactly how ill prepare she is, while she discovers who and what she is. And incidentally solves the crime afterward. Blah!

This book was amazing. It brought together a world of Fae, and some very unexpected moments that have you saying "No freaking way!" There were plenty of moments with magic, along with some lusty goodness that seems to be building into something more along the way. This book was completely unpredictable. I found myself unable to get enough. If I could just fall into this world everything would be okay, there would be an escape from reality which is what I crave, because of this I can't wait for book 2.

I could loose myself in this book for hours and not even have a worry in my mind because the book became reality; that is just how realistic and amazing this book was.

This book does contain some sexual scenes that may not be suitable for young readers therefore I would recommend this book to adults looking for a great Urban Fantasy book.

I received this ARC book for free from the author which had no influence on this review. I was under no obligation to provide a review.

Amazing story! The main character is really smart and analyzes the situation. She's attracted to some of the guys, but she's still level-headed and doesn't throw herself onto the guys. This is a great mystery novel with fantasy sprinkled in. Character development is good, and the world-building was good. There is a hint of romance, but it's more about the character beginning to understand her powers and unraveling the identity of the serial killer.

Summary:
Good character development
Strong world-building
Analytical, smart heroine

So I tried but I just can't do it. There was lots of potential here but I really can not get into a book where the police procedurals are poorly written. I tried to push through that since this is the first book in the series but you top that off with an MC that puts herself into stupid situations, an adult MC who all of a sudden isn't all human and has magic that she just didn't know about all her life who falls for the mysterious bad boy because he's mysterious and a jerk... Yeah, I'm just done.
