More Explanation Needed

The first 30 pages or so of this journal are not a true journal. Rather, these first pages discuss the concept of the shadow self and what it means to work with it. The middle section is indeed a true journal, with a variety of prompts to help you better understand yourself. I didn't necessarily see all of them as being truly about shadow work in the Jungian since. The author didn’t share enough background for a lot of these journaling prompts for the reader to really understand the work needed to properly answer them. Some blanks left me scratching my head as to what is supposed to go there. Many prompts don't really seem like true shadow work but resonate more with other concepts in the self-help space, like making a gratitude list. Some phrasing in this book, too, is a little awkward. I thought it odd as well that before there's any explanation whatsoever in the book, the author asks the reader to sign a commitment form, where you’ll commit to reading every word of this journal and doing its activities. I have seen forms like that in other self-help workbooks and journals, but usually the author gives you at least a bit more information about the book and the journey before asking for that.

I received a free copy of this journal, but that did not affect my review.

Beautiful

Shadow work journaling is a guidebook that provides prompts and exercises to help readers explore their inner selves, face their fears, and heal their emotional wounds. Through reflective writing and self-inquiry, readers can uncover their unconscious patterns, limiting beliefs, and suppressed emotions, and learn to integrate their shadow aspects into their conscious awareness for personal growth and transformation.

Simple yet Thorough; Useful Exercises for Self-Enlightenment

I really enjoyed this book. It doesn’t just talk about our “shadow selves”, it shows us how to do our own work to understand that shadow, even embrace it, so that our lives are more balanced - and somehow more open to joy and accomplishment. I plan to keep working with it in my journal!
