The Soulless Slipper is a fast paced wonderfully crafted fantasy love story! I loved it!

It’s very easy to understand so definitely appropriate for a younger audience, and also for an older audience that loves YA books that flow really nicely and can be read very quickly.

In the second half of the book there are some plot twists that will keep you glued reading!

I loved the characters. Priscilla, the FMC is a 20 years old, sometimes she could feel instinctive and naive, but considering her age that’s more than appropriate.

I really fell in love with Priscilla and could feel every emotion she was feeling. Especially when someone did her wrong.

If you like fast paced fairytale retellings with sweet romance, plot twists but with happy endings, this book’s definitely for you!

A fun mix of classic Greek mythology and Cinderella. It was an interesting retelling. The writing style and prose were not juvenile which I thought made it better.

However, most of the plot felt really over simplified and juvenile to me. I would have preferred to see the author take more liberties than she did.

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone

– this is told mainly from Priscilla & Hayden’s points of view with a few moments told by Zion & Aaron

Review:

I can’t wait to see what else will be introduced in this fairytale combined with myth retelling series! I loved how Abigail took parts of both Cinderella & Hades and Persephone to make not only her own tale, but also a story that clearly portrayed both tales (with a few changes)! I loved both Hayden & Priscilla, as well as the characters that actually liked & cared for them. I loved that Cerberus became a cute cat that caused mischief for Hayden leading them to actually meeting Priscilla. I loved that Hayden fought for what’s right, even when it was in something small like telling Priscilla the truth he could clearly see about her powers being more than she’d been told. I loved that Priscilla was not only hopeful for change in her daily life for the better, but she also stood up for herself multiple times even before finding out about what the prince had in store for her. Some of my favorite moments/scenes in this story include: dancing in spring, breakfast in Underworth, getting to see Priscilla feeling real joy after a long time of being used, when Hayden would look at Priscilla, and Priscilla’s conversations with her friend.

Summary:

Priscilla has been told all her life that she is only a mere nymph and not a divine one like her powers suggest. So she works like a nymph but, with her cruel stepmother in charge, Priscilla is made to do much more work than a mere nymph can handle and is herself on the brink of overextending her abilities. When a chance meeting with a handsome divine man leaves Priscilla breathless, she asks some questions of her stepmother to try and ascertain his identity. But there is much more to the man and his visit than Priscilla could ever fathom…

King Hayden is a divine one who takes care of the dead of Fairmyth. Relegated as an outcast by his brothers, Hayden does the best he can with the hand he’s dealt to make a good home for his subjects. But when his nephew makes a demand of him that could put an innocent woman in danger, Hayden does the unthinkable. He not only refuses to be involved in the prince’s self-centered scheme, but when the prince searches for another avenue to get what he wants, Hayden steps up to stop him. Only Hayden might be too late. With the prince’s trap (a ball) already in motion and the woman under the impression that Hayden is the prince and wants her to go to the ball, Hayden has little choices left in his arsenal. When push comes to shove and the choices whittle down to the worst but only option available to save her, Hayden will have to take the chance. He’ll have to kidnap her in order to save her…

I should have stopped reading this book after the first page. Not only is the book badly written, but the characters too. I tried to read through it, because it was an interesting concept, but the writing just became worse and worse. Plus, what tf are these names?? Prisella? Zion?! Then at least give them the original Greek names if you’re going to rip them off, not these weird
I understand you would want to read this as an indulgent because I did the same, but I could not enjoy this at all.

One good "Cinderella" retelling deserves another. The Soulless Slipper is the second of three "Cinderella" adaptations by Abigail Manning. They say you shouldn't tell the same story twice, but when you can do so in such a unique and masterful way, then why not? The Soulless Slipper is part of Abigail Manning's Fairmyth Chronicles, which seamlessly combines classic fairy tales with famous Greek myths. This book gives the story of Hades and Persephone a romantic fairy tale flair. When I was in a creative writing class years ago, I wrote a short story that retold this myth with the twist that Persephone was secretly in love with Hades and ate the pomegranate seeds of her own free will so she could stay with him. The Soulless Slipper reinforces my girlish romantic fantasies and takes them a step further by weaving in the elegance and majesty of "Cinderella."

Priscilla has been forced to spend most of her life toiling away in the fields for her wicked stepmother. She suffers vast injuries and depends on the magic of her nymph friends to survive from day to day. When a selfish prince named Aaron becomes infatuated with her, he sends his uncle, Hayden, to go and fetch her. However, Hayden takes pity on Priscilla for her stepmother's mistreatment and comes to respect her a great deal after she rescues him. When Aaron tries to trick Priscilla into binding her soul with his at a royal ball, Hayden must intercept his nephew's ploy before it's too late. For her protection, he brings Priscilla to the "Underworth," this series' version of the Underworld, where he is bound. There, she learns the truth about her powers, her past, and the people who have been trying to take advantage of her for her entire life.

When I started this book, it felt like the author was trying to develop a traditional fae world where everyone has powers and travels through portals to other realms. Once it set in that it was based on Greek mythology, everything instantly fell into place. I realized that the characters were all alter egos of Greek gods hidden in plain sight in the first letter of their names. Priscilla starts with a "P" like Persephone, Hayden is obviously Hades, Zion is Zeus, Aaron is Ares, and both Priscilla's mother and stepmother's names start with a "D" like Demeter. The story became more enjoyable when I made this connection instead of just focusing on the "Cinderella" aspects. After it became apparent that this is more of a retelling of the Persephone myth than of "Cinderella," everything fell into place.

The romance in this book is swoon-worthy and different from any other "Cinderella" retelling. In this version, Prince Aaron wants to place the enchanted slipper on Priscilla's foot for nefarious purposes, and it is up to Hayden to protect her from him and the rest of the world. Priscilla falls for Hayden pretty quickly, which allows her to see through Aaron's ruse before he has the chance to claim her. She learns that she is more powerful and important than she realizes and is given far more agency than either Cinderella or Persephone had in their origin stories. As the ruler of the "Underworth," Hayden's dark yet reassuring presence gives off "Beauty and the Beast" or Phantom of the Opera vibes, making him a dark brooding love interest with a heart of gold.

The Soulless Slipper by Abigail Manning is a swoony retelling of "Cinderella" and "Hades and Persephone" that masterfully combines elements of both stories. With its unique blend of fairy tale romance and Greek mythology, this book is a must-read for fans of romantic folklore. Manning's writing is engaging, and her characters are well-developed and complex, with Priscilla being a strong and empowered protagonist. The romance is alluring, and Hayden's dark and brooding presence adds a delicious layer of complexity to the story. Overall, The Soulless Slipper is a fantastic read that will leave you spellbound and eager for more fairy tale mythology mash-ups.

If you’re thinking about bypassing this story as “just another Cinderella retelling”—DON’T! This book is so much more than just your standard, rags-to-riches, glass slipper Cinderella story. Manning has so cleverly combined the elements of the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone with the familiar fairy tale to create a story that is fresh and creative and easily one of my new favorite Cinderellas.

One of my favorite parts of this story is King Hayden. He is the perfect mix of serious, brooding, protective, and sweet, and the Hades myth gives him so much more backstory and depth than your standard Cinderella prince.

Priscilla is a Cinderella that has a backbone, while still retaining the kindness and heart of service that are a hallmark of the character. I loved seeing her growth as she discovered more about herself and developed a relationship with Hayden.

And, as icing on the proverbial cake, there are all the clever allusions to Greek mythology (I mean…Cerpurrus. ‘Nuff said). Manning’s world-building is fabulous, and I can’t wait to read the other stories that will be set in this world!

I read this story first as a Kindle Vella, but am so glad that it is available in book form now so I can binge the whole thing whenever I want. This is a story that is definitely worth reading more than once.

I love a good fairytale retelling, but to combine it with Greek Mythology is a whole new level of combining two favorites into one!

It is easy for me to tell which of the characters are based off of, and I was eagerly waiting in anticipation for the twist in the fairytale. I hope to see the Rapunzel and Medusa retelling next and see how many more come after!

I went into this book a little concerned for how it would get a happily-ever-after, since it’s partially a retelling of Hades and Persephone (and I wouldn’t exact call that a happy ending), but it turned out great!

I personally found it to be better than her other fairy tale retellings. It had far fewer proofreading errors than her other books and the characters had more depth and seemed more realistic.

Overall, it was a very good book and had some great characters and a creative take on the stories.

Content:

*Language- “Geez” is used once, a character is called wench (I’m not entirely sure if the author was aware of the more extreme connotation.)

*Spiritual- The characters that are supposed to be parallels to the gods are called “divine ones”, but they’re basically just more powerful magic users. A lot of the plot revolves around “soul bonding”.

*Violence/death- Hayden is king of pretty much a giant graveyard, so there are mentions of bodies and death, but nothing is described. “Soul bonding” involves the victim suffering some sort of pain if they stay away too long from a specified person/thing.

*Romance- Clean. Two kisses, not described.

*Other concerns- the evil prince is mentioned to only be the son of a mistress; apparently the king had many.

I just binge-read this book in three hours and I'm absolutely grinning like an idiot.

Before I tell you all about this amazing wonderful gem, let me start at the beginning:

Isabelle was scrolling through her Amazon recommended on a Sunday afternoon (as one does), and she happened upon a title: The Soulless Slipper.
Naturally, she was intrigued.
She clicked onto its premise and found it was a retelling of both the Cinderella fairytale and the Hades & Persephone myth. Isabelle's curiosity finally gets the best of her, and she reads the first page.

She unwittingly proceeds to binge-read said novel for three straight hours.
Now.
What is this gem of a novel about?
Well. Let me explain.
(author's summary to follow in italics because i'm lazy tysm)

Cinderella meets Persephone and Hades.

Priscilla Korinder has been forced to work the fields of Mortalia ever since her mother disappeared when she was nine. Unfortunately for her, Mortalia is plagued with a curse that punishes any being who uses divine magic, leaving Priscilla covered in bruises at the end of each day. Despite her constant injuries, Priscilla’s stepmother is in disbelief that Priscilla could possibly be a divine one. She’s convinced her stepdaughter’s exhaustion is mere laziness…

King Hayden is the lone ruler of Underworth, a kingdom utilized only as a mass graveyard. He typically resides in solitude with his three-toed cat, until one day his peace is disrupted by his eager nephew. Prince Aaron of Olympia has grown infatuated with a nameless maiden in Mortalia and insists Hayden use his divine portal magic to deliver her to him. Will Hayden be able to stand by and do nothing as he watches his nephew draw the girl into a trap? He could always try to stop him, but how does one prevent a divine prince from getting what he wants? Hayden could always kidnap her first...

It's honestly so good. Like actually. I was going into this thinking "oh, I'll just read a few pages and keep looking for another fantasy romance," but like THIS WAS GOOD.

Hayden and Priscilla, the Hades and Persephone of this universe, were both strong, fell HARD for each other, and very intelligent. I added that last one because usually Hades & Persephone make Persephone sweet and very dumb and then turn Hades into this angsty moody dark boy. Like please, folks, have some common respect for these ancient mythological characters.

But I digress.

These MCs were smart, made plans, and were foolish at times, but knew each other well enough to figure out what the other would do and act accordingly. There was no third-act drama, and they suited each other wonderfully.

While the MCs were amazing, I also loved the addition of the side characters. Callum, Lilac, and Hayden's adorable three-toed cat Cerpurrus (cat version of Cerberus lol) added a bit more depth to the novel. Lilac's comedic relief provided a break from the near constant abuse Priscilla suffered from her stepmother Damaris (different than Demetria, Priscilla's actual mother...but I'm not explaining that you'll have to read the story hehe).
I also really liked how the prince was the villain of the story. I've never quite seen eye-to-eye with a lot of the original Disney heroes (I'm looking at you Mr. Nameless Prince from Snow White) so it was extremely vindicating to have Prince Aaron be inspired by Ares and be an absolute creep.

However, my favorite part was how the author worked in the Cinderella story in with the Greek mythology. It was absolutely flawless, and each story fit into the other perfectly. I never honestly would've imagined putting those stories together, but I'm so glad Abigail Manning did ❤️

You know that feeling when a book checks all your boxes? That's what The Soulless Slipper unexpectedly did for me. Cinderella has always been my favorite story, and I can never resist a retelling. I'm a big fan of quality fairytale retellings in general, and the fact that this book mixed in Greek mythology intrigued me. Add in the fact that I'm a writer with a soft spot for both YA and speculative, and I was sold. Abigail Manning gave me my money's worth, with a retelling that boasts romance, power, heart, and a lot of soul.

As I hoped they would, the fairytale and mythological elements mix expertly here. I'm not as familiar with mythology; I missed out on studying it in school because it wasn't a big part of my specific English curriculum (boo)! But this spin on the story of Demeter, Persephone, and Hades struck me as both gentler and carrying more gravitas than the original. That is yes, Priscilla and Hayden are divine ones, but more than the gods and goddesses they are modeled after, they are real people. They are relatable, and though they are from a fairytale world, they are flawed. I ended up rooting not only for their romance, but for the friendship, understanding, and safety they found with each other.

That unexpectedly deep relationship feeds one of the best parts of the book. The Soulless Slipper is a Cinderella retelling, and Priscilla is obviously Cinderella. In fact, most of the characters are archetypes and easy to assign their "roles." But this Cinderella retelling is unique in that both protagonists have a "Cinderella" background or "Cinderella moments" within the story (e.g., Priscilla is treated as a drudge, but Hayden is the one covered in figurative and literal cinders fairly often). Abigail also adds some unique twists and higher stakes to the basic fairytale plot, particularly near the end. These may not be as surprising if you're familiar with the Hades and Persephone myth, but I'd venture that even if you are, they're written well enough to keep your pages flying..

I rarely love settings quite so much as I did here. Abigail Manning clearly loves fairytales and mythology, and it shows in every bit of Mortalia and Underworth. The roots of these and other realms are clear, yet she makes each of them uniquely hers. I also loved how the settings enhance each of the plot threads; Priscilla's first ballgown, for instance, is not just a gown. It speaks to who she is and how powerful she is. It's a true gift of the land. Details like that make the plot pop.

Speaking of which, yes, there are "popping" scenes and elements here I particularly loved. As you find your own treasures, look for things such as the making of Priscilla's first dress, Hayden's introspection about his own character and childhood, their bonding together, and Priscilla's final confrontation with Damaris. Abigail gets brownie points for Hayden in general, as I found him gentle, yet undeniably masculine and swoon-worthy. Additionally, as a cat person, I offer big brownie points for Cerpurrus!

I did sometimes wish the characters were more three-dimensional or more time was spent on parts of them (e.g., I'd have liked to see Priscilla using her gift more on her own time, truly loving flowers and plants, maybe using them to heal the land or people). I also noticed some narrative summary and repetition, plus a few typos and an inexplicable font change (might be just the Kindle edition). Those issues aside though, The Soulless Slipper is more a 4.5-4.8 and gets a hearty recommendation. Nibble it like ambrosia because you'll definitely want more!

Content Warnings: Blood, Gaslighting, Self-harm via magic, Abusive Stepparent, mentions of death, forced imprisonment

I am head over heels in love with this book! I was kind of surprised by how well the elements of Cinderella were able to mix in with the tale of Hades and Persephone.

I absolutely LOVE Hayden!!! His sarcasm and humor were just the best! I honestly wish there was more of it. I also loved how sweet and protective he was. The way he placed Priscilla's needs and desires before his own was so swoon worthy. He is now my current obsession. Priscilla was an ok FMC. I really wish there was more growth from her character. We see some of it towards the end, but I just wanted there to be more. I would've liked to have seen a more detailed scene where she asked Hayden all the questions on her mind because some of them were kind of left unanswered as well.

I did enjoy the writing of this story. Again, I do have one gripe about it which is that there are a lot of typos and grammar errors. Not enough to majorly put me off, but there were quite a few. There's also a character that suddenly changed talents from the beginning of the book to the end. I don't know if that is due to the book being on kindle vella first and it didn't get to go through a more thorough editing phase.

I will definitely be reading the rest of this series for as long as it may continue.

Setup

This was a fun idea with ok execution. I like the mix of myth and fairy tales concept, and I think the chosen two here fit well. However, most of this story felt like setup of the world and fairy tale plot instead of the romance. The main characters don't even know each other's names until the ball; before that they only had 1.5 conversations. I would have preferred more myth (time together in Underworth) and less fairy tale (poorly treated girl goes to a ball) in that regard.

Priscilla is... a very naive character and not very smart. She's sheltered, constantly lied to by a mother figure, and doesn't seem very educated, which explains some of her behavior/state of mind. However, the level of her naivete was a bit frustrating to read at times. I also felt her character development was very rushed at the end.

Hayden was alright, but I didn't feel like I knew him as well. I did like the usage of his powers during the confrontation with another divine. I wish we saw more of his strength and leadership; he was often shown in a weakened state.

I intend to give other stories in this series and by this author a try.

👠 The Soulless Slipper
A hauntingly elegant fusion of myth and fairytale that tiptoes the edge of fantasy with breathtaking flair.

“The Soulless Slipper” isn’t just a clever title—it’s a doorway into a realm where Cinderella’s midnight curfew meets Persephone’s descent into shadow. The author masterfully weaves two iconic narratives into a single, mesmerizing story that feels both timeless and strikingly original.

At the heart of this tale is a heroine caught between two worlds: one glittering with gowns and glass slippers, and the other cloaked in secrets and sacrifice. With every page, you follow her transformation—not just from servant to royalty, but from innocent to empowered, grappling with choices that ripple across realms. There’s an aching beauty to how the author retains the magic of both inspirations while crafting something utterly new: a story of liberation, love, and claiming one’s own destiny.

Rich imagery, lyrical prose, and a slow-burning romance make this a read you’ll want to savor, yet can’t help devouring in a single breath. Dark and dazzling, tender and terrifying—“The Soulless Slipper” takes what’s familiar and turns it into something enchantingly unexpected.

Perfect for lovers of myth-touched fantasy and fairytale retellings with bite. ✨🌒

This book had an interesting premise--combining the Cinderella story with the myth of Hades and Persephone, and while the world had promise, the story ultimately fell flat for me. I think part of the problem was the fact that Hades and Persephone didn't spend very much time together until 50% in the book, and there wasn't much justification as to why they fell in love, except that Pricilla was gorgeous, and Hayden was handsome. I think if more time had been spent building their connection prior to the ball scene, I would have been rooting for them more in the second half of the story. Also, I struggled with the fact that we're told Aaron is terrible a lot more than we're actually shown it. Pricilla must be far more adept at reading body language than I am if she could pick up Aaron's bad vibes from one meeting.

There were also quite a few issues in editing (the tense shifts were the biggest thing I noticed), that detracted a little from the reading experience. I might give the second book in the series a chance if it's on Kindle Unlimited.

A Hades and Persophene retelling with a Cinderella mix.
We have the awful step family and indentured servant aspects of Cinderella. The cursed land and kidnapping from Hades and Persophene.
I wasn't sure if I would like a mashup of these two stories but Manning has done a wonderful job of mixing the two seamlessly.
I like the twists and turns throughout that she played with. A favorite name swap in this is definitely "Cerpurrus".
The magic system and world building have me wanting more stories from Fairmyth.
Sweet clean romance, no language, and no to mild violence.
I recommend it to fans of fairy tales, myths, and retellings. And to fans of sweet clean romance in a fantasy setting.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Excellent Retelling!

Finding a good Hades and Persephone retelling is *so* difficult, and finding a clean retelling that still delivers on the romance is incredibly rare. The Soulless Slipper really came through for me on both counts!

I also really enjoyed that Manning intertwined the Cinderella story with Hades and Persephone. It was clever and worked really well. The length and pacing also worked for me, especially because I read it straight through!

I loved that Priscilla wasn’t a pushover, and that Hayden wasn’t a controlling psychopath. I also really loved their relationship and the depth of each of their character. 10/10 would definitely read again!

I really like both Cinderella and Persephone and Hades stories, and I wasn't completely sure that both of these stories could be woven together and fairly tell both stories, but I have to admit, they worked well together in this retelling! It was really creative to put them together - I really enjoyed the unique approach to combining both stories, and I thought it was well done.
I liked all the characters involved, and I it was a nice story. If you're familiar with both stories, I think you'll enjoy this novel!

Gosh I'm so sorry - I really wanted to love this, I did; the greek mythology/cinderella mashup retelling was an exciting concept, but I just felt like it was shoved down my throat the entire time & I hate being spoon fed; I got the references without you spelling it out. Also - Aaron?? At least Hayden & Priscilla are somewhat rare human names, but Aaron?? It felt really out of place next to Zion, Demetria, Creon, Demaris, Azalea, etc. Obviously that has nothing to do with the overall story, it just bugged me. I dont think I'll be reading the next one.

Rating: Not for Me
Spice: None, Clean Romance

Swearing Language: None
Sexual Language: None

Characters: The characters themselves weren't bad, their choices didn't always make sense to me and the timing of their choices often seemed hampered by things less important than actually following through with their decisions (i.e. headaches).
Plot: The overall plot was very interesting and there was good world building.

While this book was not for me, I am interested in reading other books by this author as the plot was good and the author's voice was enjoyable.

I loved this book! It was such an amazing twist on Cinderella with the slipper and having it fall off. I loved Priscilla and Hayden's relationship and Priscilla was so sweet and trusting despite all the abuse she'd gone through because of her stepmother. There was such an unexpected twist in the end that I didn't even guess it! This is truly an amazing book and a must-read for anyone who likes sweet, clean fairy tale retellings - this one also mixes a myth with it! It was such an original take on Hades and Persephone as well, with the pomegranate and everything. Great job Abigail Manning!

SPOILERS:

It was a cute melding of the two stories. But, it seemed to move slow. The climax was so short compared to build up. Also, for being an all knowing king, how TF you don’t know her mom was there, tied to a tree? No one who guards the opening saw the stepmother bring her in, and leave her? No one reported that to??

Also, the beginning of the story implied anyone who was a Divine one was not to be known - like it was illegal. But the story didn’t match that theme.

Like I said, it was a cute blend, but overall, it could have been deeper, more adult oriented, maybe even sexier.

The first two thirds of this were phenomenal - inventive storytelling with how the author combined the two fairytales, cute scenes between the protagonist and her love interest. The last third lost some luster for me in how the two main characters became blushing besotted crushes of sorts. Also have a few questions about how the stepmother character wasn’t routed earlier. Still a decently strong ending. Overall, I thought this was a delightful read and would recommend this to a friend.

Magical!

Cinderella and Persephone. Who knew these stories could go together so well! I loved Hayden and Priscilla, Cepurrus, and the way these stories intertwined. I was very invested and calling out all kinds of advice to Priscilla as I read, which unfortunately, she didn’t take.
The only thing I would change is the cover.

Content: clean (no language, abuse-Cinderella style, a few kisses)

Just loved it!!

I truly have enjoyed this story of Priscilla and Hayden, two trapped characters that find joy in each other. I loved how they overcome their circumstances together and how the two tales were intertwined to make a wonderful story of its own. I definitely will come back to this one and highly recommend this sweet, clean (kisses only) romance that still leaves you swooning and heart happy!!

Grat mix of fairy tale, myth, and fantasy

What happens when a writer mixes the myth of Persephone and Hades, with Cinderella, then adds a dash of intrigue and mystery? The answer is this book, and it's worth the read.

Amazing blend of Cinderella and Hades/Persephone

Well thought out plot, interesting twist of character traits. I wasn’t sure what to expect but AM never disappoints!!! Clean read except for possibly those triggered by scenes of domestic abuse (as with any Cinderella story) though not overly done.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Cinderella/Persephone mashup. I saw the reflections of both tales woven in perfectly to this novel, unified as one.

King Hayden had me swooning from the start 💕 & the ending may have left me a bit misty eyed.

If you’re looking for a classic romance, without any spice, this is the book for you.

This story excellently and uniquely weaves together the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone with the fairy tale of Cinderella, all inside of Manning's original magical world. It is well-written, with a gripping plot, likable characters, and wonderful nods to the borrowed classics. I am looking forward to reading more of Manning's myth/fairy tale mash-ups.
