I could tell you that the author is a middle class, middle age white dude with a generic wife and a generic pet who lives somewhere vaguely rural...but aren't they all?
F%$! that noise! There are Author Bios and then there's Mythos.

Welcome to the Mythos of Macronomicon.

Macronomicon is almost three years old now, hatched on the open-mic writing website Royal Road. The pen name burst from the cocoon of blissful ignorance and deposited his first humble contribution into the world of writing, tired and sticky, yet satisfied. Content in the knowledge his work would be warmly received by thousands of potential fans, and more importantly...friends.

The first comment was, "Can you, I don't know, make the main character less stupid?"

That was sobering.

Macronomicon has no actual weight, because he is a pen name, and while his existence is ephemeral, he does have a presence, often stalking the back-channels of Discord like a novelty vampire, waiting to suck nourishing creativity out of unfortunate* fans.

Macronomicon has a talent for brainstorming and stringing together disparate ideas into a cohesive story. That talent has been strengthened and built upon to form the foundation of his writing career. He once outlined the plot (quality notwithstanding) of an entire book from start to finish in a tiny room with nothing but Cheerios, beef jerky, Pepsi and B.O.**

If you wish to hunt for the elusive Macronomicon, you may find him at Royal Road, where he began, or Patreon, where he works*** at distilling new stories from a raw, chunky slurry of ideas.

*Or fortunate, depending on your point of view. The sucking is consensual.
**Quality of B.O. also notwithstanding.
*** Working is subjective.

This is the final* in a LitRPG series. Read in order.

You know that Calvin is going to go off the rails with this one. And he does. We get some actual kingdom building and trade and stuff along with some genuine laugh-out-loud moments. And then I got tired. At about two-thirds through of this ginormous volume, two things conspired to pull out a dnf. First, like I said, I got tired. Nadia wears on me and the fact that every society in this one (with the possible exception of Calvin's home kingdom of Gadvera) is horrible in one way or another. Or three. Makes it hard to want to immerse myself in the story. In this one we meet the copper dudes who relegate all women to domestic skills (by manipulating the skill acquisition mechanic) and keep them oppressed accordingly. And the men are all dude-bros of one flavor or another.

And then the author throws in a psychopath. Or I should say another one because Nadia is still going strong. And the new guy gets some premium PoV and that's always going to throw me out of a story. And when the author cheats for them to make them both stronger, and get away in a clutch moment, I start to hate everything about a story. This happened. And threw me out hard enough I have zero desire to finish. Because I am in charge of myself well enough to know the sunk-cost fallacy is a devil set to rob your most precious assets (I mean time, but take your pick), I'm perfectly capable of walking away despite closing in on the end.

I'm going to give this three stars for the laugh-out-loud moments. But I'm hating myself just a little bit for doing so. Seriously psychopaths are never as interesting as authors think they are. At least for me. I was almost reconciled to Nadia, but the new guy tossed me right out of caring about anything any more. I'm sad it turned out that way, but happy to move onto my next read. And if the author comes out with something new, I'll almost certainly check it out.

* Not actually the final book. Apparently, the afterword references that there are more (thank you, Alex, for the reply!)

A note about Steamy: The same pattern exists in this one as in the others. There's enough to trigger the steam tag. But curtains are pulled frequently so it isn't actually that titillating when all's said.

I was really disappointed with this installment. The first two books were fantastic. This one...just sort of fell apart for me, and I'm not precisely sure why. I think things got a bit too weird and/or esoteric and the mechanics became more difficult to follow. The story also felt less cohesive than the first two books. It had much more of a random, chaotic flow to it and I just couldn't keep my head in the story.

I may still check out the fourth book (which is supposedly the last one) when he picks the story back up in 2H 2023, but boy was I let down by this one.

Book three

I've been following this story on Royalroad since it first went up and have enjoyed the difference from other litrpg that are out there. I'm glad to see it's being published on KU.
This author has an imagination that will keep me reading his stories for years to come.

wait…what?!?

First, I laughed out loud several times while reading this. Mostly juvenile humor, but hilarious even so.

I strongly recommend you read the previous books just before starting this one. It dives straight into the action and does not offer any explanations. Which makes it difficult to understand how the system works if it’s been a while since you read the previous books.

He says he’s going to write a fourth book. I am so going to read that fourth book.

First book finished in 2024. Not perfect and far too long but the ending made up for a lot of faults in the beginning 2/3 of the book. If you enjoyed the first two you will probably like this one but be prepared for the slog.

Kalvins Gadsons nav kāds bāreņos palicis dzīves pabērns, kuram Liktenis ar lielo burtu lēmis kļūt par karalistes vai visas pasaules glābēju. Sešpadsmitgadīgais galvenais varonis ir vien viens no daudzajiem piedzīvojumu alkstošajiem jaunajiem censoņiem, kurš ar paša cītīgu piepūli un nenoliedzami vienmēr vajadzīgu veiksmes faktoru (no autora Macronomicon puses) izlaužas, lai būtu tas, kurš kļūst par izredzēto varoni.

Good sequel to a good series.

Not much to say; if you read the first two books you know what to expect, and this book delivers it.

It ends on a pretty nice moment of awesome for the protagonist, and sets things up for book 4, which I am eagerly awaiting.

There is a big difference between complex and cluttered.

This has lost the story in a heap of what is meant to be chaotic and funny. It is not silly or surprising. It is just a mess.

Bent and Twisted: A Twisted Finale That Bends the Rules, But Not Always for the Better

The third installment in Macronomicon's Wake of the Ravager series wraps up with a whirlwind of magic, mayhem, and questionable choices. While it delivers spectacle and a few satisfying twists, it ultimately stumbles under the weight of its ambition.

Plot: A Chaotic Crescendo with Missed Opportunities

Calvin ascends as a Wizard-King, determined to unite disparate lands through unconventional means - a premise ripe with potential, but the execution feels rushed and heavy-handed.
Key conflicts are resolved too abruptly, with convenient quick fixes that undermine tension and character growth.
Intriguing subplots, like interdimensional travel and political intrigue, are introduced but left underdeveloped, leaving a sense of missed opportunities.

Characters: A Mixed Bag of Development and Stagnation

Calvin's transformation into a forceful ruler is compelling, but his actions often border on the tyrannical, making it hard to fully root for him.
Supporting characters like Myra and Dara shine in moments of action and emotional depth, but their arcs feel sidelined at times.
Antagonists lack complexity, falling into stereotypical villain tropes that hinder their impact.

Worldbuilding: Ambitious Yet Uneven

The author's creativity shines in crafting unique magical systems and fantastical creatures.
However, worldbuilding elements are often introduced without proper context or exploration, leaving a sense of disjointedness.

Pacing: A Breakneck Rollercoaster with Occasional Stumbles

The plot moves at a rapid pace, keeping readers engaged with constant action and twists.
However, this speed comes at the expense of character development and emotional resonance, making some scenes feel shallow.

Magnificent Wardrobe (The rose is without explanation; she blooms ...

Overall: A Chaotic Conclusion That Entertains but Frustrates

Bent and Twisted offers a wild ride with imaginative concepts and audacious plot twists. But its rushed pacing, underdeveloped characters, and missed opportunities prevent it from reaching its full potential. It's a book that will entertain those seeking fast-paced fantasy action, but those looking for deeper character arcs and more cohesive worldbuilding may be left wanting.

While I did like the first book and the second wasn't too bad, the 'unappealing' parts of the books exploded in the third one.

I'll admit I DNF (Did not finish) this book.

While I already was disliking the MC for sleeping and falling for the cannibal who was part of the village that killed and ate his childhood friends and neighbors. I could say it was the drug and move on, though in this one he gets the drug removed and still loves the cannibal. So clearly he has little attatchment to his childhood. Also it's odd that the rest of the characters seem not to care that she is part of that village either.

Then there is the druggie princess. I personally am not a fan of drug addicts so seeing this girl trying to get her fix all the time and get others on drugs was annoying but moved past it.

Then the MC starts to enjoy torturing people and being cruel, atop of starting to want to torture his slave princess spirit. Ooookay.

Then everyone is okay with Slavery and even the princess getting a 'companion' gifted to her as a birthday present, one which hasn't been allowed to see anyone since her first breaking..

So, so far the MC and those around him by book three are utter human trash. Like the reason in the real world we still have the death penalty sort of people. If there wasn't a bigger bad, the Mc and his friend would be the villains of any other story..

No? Well to top it off where I stopped, Karen his mother starts to teach his soliders how it's okay to kill babies. How many babies she's dashed on rocks during war. How it's okay to be normal people rest of the time but during war they have to give up all morals.

Ya that's a big no for me. Someone should have spat on her, told her that they'd rather die than give up their humanity by becoming monsters just for a war and walked off. Nope everyone just bows down and become baby killers.

So the answer was no. I quit right then. This isn't the series for me and I really hope this is just the author making a cast of horrible people and the author isn't the sort to think this behavior is okay. Else I worry they might need some mental help and therapy.

If you've made it this far, you know what to expect, and this is more of the same except more grandiose and somewhat annoying.

My main problem is that the plot and the system can kind of just go wherever the author wants. Nothing really needs to have continuity because crazy powers and weird external events will just support any random thing that happens. I much prefer strongly defined systems and plots/series that seem to be moving towards a real endpoint.

That being said, the writing is still high quality, the humor is okay, and the characters aren't just cardboard, which is all good. I'm not a huge fan of the casual abuse that the Nadia character is subjected to, but overall everything is okay. I'll keep reading this to see where the whole thing is going.

I'm really enjoying this series.

I like how pop culture references are integrated so seamlessly into the story. You only realise what they are, after they are purposely pointed out. Otherwise, it just seems like a logical action.

What I dislike is there being a book one version of the protagonist running around, and being a lab assistant. Maybe he has a big reveal, otherwise, annoying.

I really do enjoy people solving problems with their brains.

This packed more craziness than the other books. How this was going I thought it would be the last book of the series, but that is far from the case.

good but needs more focus

So appreciate the main character and the motley crew he’s assembled. I have two issues. The book is a bit all over the place.it’s more like a month in the life of the MC than a cohesive narrative.

Secondarily, the magic system is out of control. At a certain point things just becomes ridiculous. It’s like the author decided to include everything he possibly could - mind control, resurrection, seeing the future, stopping time, etc. after a certain point it’s hard to suspend disbelief.

Just crazy! A mix of LitRPG, sci-fi and just crazy stuff

The MC, his princesses and summons fight a body hopping mind siphon, electric mages, eldritch horrors and a harbinger. Im still not sure what a harbringer and a ravager are, though they are powerful entities. This story is very creative as Calvin bends and twists the system and reality into a pretzel. All the while, Elliot the ravager that inhabits his mental space plots to take over his body. Its one heck of a wild ride. There should be another book coming as Calvin has just recovered (kinda) from a severe mischief.

KU Review

Grilled cheese girl? Tomato soup man? Despite the sometimes silly and/or insane things going on, I still find myself glued to the pages needing to find out what’s next.

General disclaimer: I want to be clear in that I do not factor cost into any review and as such, this is simply a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

I finished this to just see where it went. It went.... somewhere? Again I felt like the author was lost as to where things should go and it all just went along and coalesced to a huge mess that kinda made sense at the end. It wasn't really a fun or memorable trip so I was a bit disappointed at the pace and lack of payoff on the tension of the main trio. It was interesting to start with an interesting back story but again that all just kinda got thrown together in random nonsense.

Sir, A Moment Of Your Time

This book has the best final act of any book I’ve ever read. Ever. You and I (and Calvin) understand each other on a fundamental level, from Lords of Acid to Newt quotes to “I’m not even supposed to be here today!” If someone other than the author is reading this review, stop and start reading the book. Seriously.

so insane

I love this man and his books. They are insane. They are utterly insane. He is a master of crossing all lines in way that make you say “Yes, these lines are bullshit anyway.” But I also feel creepy reading about teenagers boink each other. Just one of those lines I guess?

I read much of this on RR, so I was having serious deja vu before skipping ahead. Once I got into new material, the usual clever stuff was there, but the ending was nearly incomprehensible and it kinda wrecked it for me.

Not fatally, but enough that I didn't enjoy the entire package as much as I might have, ergo 4 stars instead of 5. YMMV.

Awesome but rushed?

The entire story leading up to here (end of book 3) was awesome but, perhaps due to personal bias, I didn't enjoy the latter half of the book and Carmen was simply annoying. The ending also felt a bit rushed but it's not the end of the series so that's fine I guess.

It went off the rails a bit too much for me. It doesn't feel like there's an internally consistent power/magic system or anything - instead whatever crazy thing that's needed for the plot or a joke just happens. This would have been better if more of the humor attempts landed.

I enjoyed the first two books, but this was a chaotic mess of a miss for me.

kingdom builder psycho edition

This one is a lot. This is a long story, with at least 3 different arcs. The MC is a mover and a shaker, with an ambitious vision to create his wizard kingdom, no matter who gets in his way, and the journey is great. Lots of twists, evil baddies, and a last boss that kinda comes outta nowhere. Overall it's very entertaining.

The only good thing I can say about this one is that the FMC's are more present. Otherwise I can't recommend anyone continues the series, the author seems to have given up on this one. Wait for the referenced "Dead and Loving It". You can kind of tell the author's was loosing it with this one, it's messy.

This books ending is like taking drugs.

This books ending is like taking drugs, its a continous mind warp that makes no sense and yet is utterly fascinating. This is great book(if a bit long) and i definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys macronomicons work!

Manic and Delightful

I don’t know if I can recommend this book to anyone and yet I want to recommend it to everyone I know. Made for the fan of litrpgs, fantasy, and anime. Macronomicon’s odd sense of humor and entirely too over-engineered magic systems are a delight.
