Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.
Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.
The friendship between Soul and Maka as well as Black Star and Tsubaki is just top tier and the reason why this is one of my favorite series of all time. Can’t wait until the next Perfect Edition releases!
Holy shit, this volume was so fucking intense! So much crazy shit happened and the fights were visually stellar and super emotional. I love learning more about the main crew as well as seeing them interact with each other, either with their partners or as a group. Ohkubo has done a great job of slowly showing the friendship between the main cast while not slowing down the momentum of the story. Also, this is a group that I feel like would be friends with each other and hang out, not a mish-mash of weirdos that hang out together because the story demands it.
Another solid volume, loved it, love this series so much!
I miscalculated the number of chapters in the first volume. I wasn't aware the first three "chapters" were actually sequential "one-shots" published by Square-Enix before Ohkubo began proper serialization of the main manga in Gangan.
It's been so long since I've seen the anime (which I dropped a little over halfway through, which was apparently when it diverged from the manga) that I don't remember a lot of what happened, nor what to expect. I would not have guessed Medusa and Crona showed up so early, so even though I should be aware somewhat of what happens in the near future I feel like I'm basically reading blind/fresh. Which is pretty good, I guess.
Anyway, it seems the plot is that there are risks of enemy Weapons becoming Kishin by reaping Good Souls, so I guess that's what will happen for the next few fights. In this volume, Maka and Soul fight Crona and Ragnarok, then Tsubaki fights her brother Masamune. We also have the chapter introducing my boy, Excalibur! And the last chapter in the volume has Medusa using another witch, Eruka Frog, to release a prisoner who will presumably be the next major enemy.
This volume is more focused on fights than fanservice, compared to the first one.

"But that's Black Star's way of powering up his soul, you have your own way of doing the same thing."
I remembered a lot of things with this second volume of the saga. A character I like appeared, Crona, and I don't remember exactly why I like them. And a character that I and many hate, Excalibur! I still remember the song he sings and the irritating voice, note that I have a terrible memory and watched the anime years ago! I was surprised by some things and admired Maka and Soul's affection, Black Star's strength, and his relationship with Tsubaki. Other than that, it is a good story to pass the time.
Way better than the last volume. The coloured pages in this specific edition are gorgeous. There's a coloured version of the fight between Crona and Maka and I loved it. There's also a lot of Tsubaki backstory and some Black Star backstory. It was very nice to see Tsubaki's character get expanded upon.
Unfortunately, there's still a lot of unnecessary fanservice of Blair, and fully nude panels of some background characters (who are minors!). I'm glad Tsubaki and Maka didn't get sexualised in this volume at least... But the background character shit was also completely unnecessary and gross.
Good second volume. When get more backstory & important (well at least there were In the anime) characters introduced in this one. Glad waited until these to start reading this series. Watched the anime years ago and loved it. But, the manga had not finished at point anime did. So decided to wait until it was all out. Which it is now (albeit not as these editions) so nice bonus for waiting to own & read these. These editions are nice so far. & the bonus of the original coloured panels is always nice.
The artwork continues to be gorgeous and the stories ratchet up the intensity. We get a much deeper exploration of Tsubaki as well as background on Black Star. This volume also sets up a long term story that is fascinating with the introduction of the kishin and Medusa. It's also a lot of fun watching the interactions and friendship between Maka and Soul.
4.5 I put 4.5 as I found some parts were boring but that’s it really I like the story and how it is developing I like the world building and the characters and I think it was worth every penny mainly because of the colour pages which look beautiful.
The step up of quality from this volume compared to the last is incredible! The story feels well paced and has plenty of exciting things happening which makes you really want to keep reading. I’m really looking forward to seeing how these events play out in the next instalment!
I will give this read a solid a reading it was a very solid read and very entertaining but not the best thing I’ve ever read even though it was still fun
Tsubaki's fight with her brother was a really emotional moment and the plot starts to develop with Miss Medusa being introduced as a spy for the witches.
