“You may not be what your family wants you to be, but you are precisely what I want.”
(sorry, i had to start this review off with a cute quote as to not traumatize anyone who just glimpses at this)
listen, i don't wanna give this 1 star because if you like the idea of fucking a giant reptile, then you'll probably dig this book. it's not the author's fault i'm not into the idea of hooking up with my scorpion boss. (can you tell i'm trying to be less of a hater ass bitch in 2023?)
however, im sorry to say, it was also written kinda poorly. could have been decent if it had more editing.
so all in all, if you don't mind wattpad-esque writing and have the desire to sleep with a variety of monsters including a sea creature, a scorpion, a moth king (ngl, i liked this one😩), a rat thing, a bat, etc... then you'll probably eat this shit up!
She was usually described as awkward. Or worse. She was not necessarily a people person. Apparently, she did fine with monsters. me, am i right ladies?!
The Monster’s Mate series features eleven monsters finding their human mates from the settlement of Deathfall Territory to the modern Deathfall city. Some of the stories have characters from other stories but the stories can be read independently of one another, but they all share the same basic premise of a woman finding love with a monster who looks like a monster. Each year the monsters of Deathfall experience a mating season where they try to find their love though a series of steps: the giving of a courting gift, then the acceptance or denial by the woman (big hint: nobody denies nothing), and finally the hot and steamy claiming (which usually includes marking/biting). I do own all of these independently but getting all of these monster erotic romance stories in one place is amazing. I have read these several times and come back when I need a short, hot, and steamy monster romance with a monster who looks like a monster but is really a great being. My personal faves are Taken by the Scorpion, The Moth, and Taken by the Bat. This collection includes:
Courted by Darkness Olivia is rescued by a shadowy monster whom she readily accepts.
The Lake A tentacled lake monster saved Madison from drowning and she spends more and more time with him hoping he’ll claim her.
Taken by the Scorpion Mr. Black, sometimes humanoid and sometimes all scorpion, gently courts coworker Lily and finally makes his attraction to her known.
The Alley Supposed monster-hunter Ava finds the tables turned when she instead falls for the beast she’s supposed to bring down.
Taken by the Bat Zoey and her brother find their forever home in what turns out to be a monster’s house.
The Moth Riley dares to dream of the colorful King of Deathfall Moths and not his drab underling her parents want her to mate with.
The Beast in the Subway Tara is drawn to the monster, Umbra, who comes to her rescue on a subway ride.
The Fertile Harvest [Historic Deathfall settlement] Annabelle seeks resources from monster Cizen for her family’s survival and finds love in the monster’s settlement.
The Bonekeeper’s Mate [Historic Deathfall settlement] Bridget escapes a physically abusive alcoholic husband and finds her mate in her protective monster, Narik.
To Tempt a Monster [Historic Deathfall] Dragon-like Keen sends his ward, Etta, away every mating season but this year she’s sneaking back and getting him to claim her.
The Widow and the Wolf [Historic Deathfall – Post WWI] War widow Milly works in a garment factory and draws the protective attentions of her wolf supervisor, Benjamin, who’ll make her desires come true.
I like the premise of this universe. Monsters and humans coexisting in a city. It's consensual mating. I liked all the stories in the anthology but I just wish there was more. More plot, more depth, more romance.
I really enjoyed reading about the monsters of Deathfell and the courtships that played out in their mating seasons. Read all of the Deathfell short stories in one go!
I usually rate my reads based on three things. Technical (writing, grammar, word choice, etc), Characters, and Plot.
Technical: The writing was honestly better than I've experienced in a while. I'm not a terribly big fan of first person, so having a novel that wasn't was such a refreshing piece. I find myself sometimes getting second hand embarassment when an author uses a word or phrase that's particularly immersion breaking (we won't talk about 'gummy' and 'creamy', no we won't), but out of the entire book, I only had two moments where I had to wince at word choice. Beyond that, it was well written, if a little bit simple.
I felt like the author was holding themself back when writing this. The spicy scenes were very stilted and left much to be desired. While I applaud the author actually paying attention to certain... "button's" that those of the female anatomy have, it didn't help when most, if not all of the spicy felt like "wham-bam-thank you ma'am."I would have LOVED some heavier spice, and better anatomical descriptions of both the monsters and the monster... anatomy. I feel cheated a little bit.
The descriptions of the monsters were mediocre as well, which was really sad because I felt like, if they had spent more time describing how they were monsters I would have spend less time feeling like they were just dudes with minimal monster features. I wanted to read this for the MONSTER part, not for the "vague description that just sounds like a muscular guy with unnatural eyes and or maybe a tail." Out of all the ones that I read, the one about the tentacle monster was the closest one to actual monster anatomy (even if, again, the spicy scene was mediocre).
Characters: I have to give the author plenty of kudos here because most romance/spicy novels fall victim to the same tropes in their MCs over and over again. It's gotten to the point where they're all just different flavored, insert-white-girl-here, characters that don't make me want to be in their head at all. They're usually boring, annoying even. Not these ones. These characters were all different (for the most part). They had different lives and felt like different, unique people, so it was really nice to experience the mating and courting from each of their povs.
Plot: I actually really, really liked the premise of Deadfall city. I liked the culture, the mating practices, the lore. I would have loved to see more indepth monster romance settled in this particular setting. In that, it was very unique a setting and I really loved it. More please!
All in all, I wanted to give this book a better rating, I really did. The characters were good, the plot was good and the writing was nice... but because I felt like the author didn't provide better spice and monster in a spicy monster book, I couldn't.
Another spicy monster anthology, this time with a bit more romance. Key words there are "a bit," as they're still incredibly short and the interactions are much the same as Blue's other short stories. There's mostly just more of a promise for the future with these, rather than a passing good time, though some are definitely more romantic than others.
The stories take place in a town called Deathfall where monsters court human women every winter during a mating season. These stories all contain refreshingly respectful monster men and consent for every step. Two stories are a bit more colonial and two are vaguely 1920s, with the rest being modern.
There were a few that I really enjoyed, but they're all starting to get kinda same-y, honestly. The types of monsters and the girls might be different, but the spice is all starting to run together with her stories even outside of this anthology, and I'm getting increasingly frustrated by the minimal descriptions of the monsters.
In Taken by the Scorpion, the MMC is described this way: "More often than not, he wore his vaguely humanoid form. On the days he abandoned any attempt at humanity, he took his true form. A giant scorpion. He was all shiny shell, wicked pincers, and a deadly stinger the length of her forearm." Of course he changes from his humanoid to scorpion form when they're doing the deed, but are we talking about a giant version of a regular scorpion, or are we talking about a bipedal one, so humanoid figure with lots of big scorpion traits? In the first story, all we get of the guy is that his skin is a bluish green and he's big/tall and has sharp teeth. ????? So, is he a sewer fishman? A lizard??? This is essentially the way every one of the MMCs are described in Blue's stories, and I just want a thorough gottdamn description, PLEASE.
I do appreciate the varied backstories to the FMCs, even if there's not a ton of depth to them considering the length of the stories. But they have vaguely different personalities and come from different backgrounds. Even if they all say the same three things during spicy times...
The stories in the order that I enjoyed them, most to least:
The Bonekeeper’s Mate - takes place a little before The Fertile Harvest, as the FMC in this one is paired up already when she briefly appears in TFH.
The Widow and the Wolf
Taken by the Bat
The Fertile Harvest - enjoyed this one because it's set further back in time, with non-Native people freshly settled in the area.
What could be more fun that another book just dedicated to monster stories? How about a book full of deliciously steamy monster stories?!?
This anthology gives you more of those tentacles, claws, amd teeth that you crave straight from the monsters that seek to find that one special person that can see the monster for they really are in the city of Death fall.
Each story follows a unique 'mating' experience and the what leads each to finding their one. Hot, filthy, and just what a monster cryptid story should be.

I loved each story but they were very speedy reads. There isn’t much development in terms of plot but the romantic content itself leans towards the sweeter side then suddenly launches into dirty. I would have rated four stars but I felt it was just missing a liiitle bit of closure. I appreciated that we saw glimpses of established relationships in subsequent shorts within this novella anthology but I wanted a time skip of a year or even five to show us a baby monster, a flourishing relationship, or just more of an interconnected community of monsters and human mates.
This was my first anthology book that I read by this author, and… as weird as it all is, I enjoyed it. Yeah I don’t know what’s going on with me, but even though most of these creatures sound the opposite of what I would consider sexy, there is something in the way the author writes a good pining that really fits the whole Beauty and the Beast trope. Which is all these stories are, if you want to get down to brass tacks about it.
My favorite (for the pining) was the Scorpion Boss one. Absolutely crazy to imagine the physical logistics, but he was so protective and nice and thoughtful. And the fmc was older, which was great. I thought it was very romantic. Body segments and all.
I’m all here for an anthology of monsters to read periodically between longer books.
I would say it started off as a ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 but quickly went down after the 40% mark. It somehow went from urban fantasy to Victorian times where the women were wearing bloomers and were all virgins.
Some of the writing gave me the ick like ‘womanhood’ and some of the ‘old time’ writing. Also, I’m all about short stories, but I do wish the writing was a bit better.
There were some good stories, but more ‘meh’ and ‘dnf’s’ than I would have liked.
Oh my god…. Yes yes yes!!!! Adrian Blue has formed another awesome paperback book collection that now graces my bookshelf! - The 10 Monster’s Mate stories are all amazing. Short, spicy and sweet reads. Engaging characters and great storylines. And the final story added into this collection, The Widow and The Wolf, was awesome!! I cannot recommend this book enough! I adore having so many of her stories combined into one book!
Not gonna lie, when I first picked up this book, I thought it was just going to be smut.
Yes, there is some, but the characters are amazingly well written. I love how some of the stories are interconnected. The monsters are wild, but sweet, and even then ones I would never dream about reading were fascinating.
Scorpions are terrifying, yet my favorite story was Mr. Black followed by Keen.
These aren't the typical hot guys with some fur or pointy ears that dates a girl stories. It is males with large razor teeth, huge claws, funky tongues (in some cases multiple tongues), wings, scales, you name it. An anthology of quick, steamy reads that had me going for the next book immediately after I finished this one. Must love monsters to read this.
The Monster's Mate Series is a collection of short stories, is part of an interconnected series with multiple POV's and ends in a HEA. All of the stories take place in the same community at the same time of year.
Each short story was good and your very typical monster romance. My only complaint is that they were all too short. I wanted more. I wanted to see the characters build up to their explosive chemistry. I do understand that wasn't the point of the series, but I can't help but have wanted an emotional connection with each physical one.
Each book comes with new scenarios but have a happily mated finally. Where winter equals male monsters going into a rut and start courting humans by giving them gifts ranging from a morning coffee to jewelry.
This whole series is made up of short monster Omegaverse reads, and while they all have endings there's always more I like to know. So Ms. Ryans coming back to the characters and adding more made my little heart so happy.

I had read these stories individually and now to have a collection of most is great. Every story once again grabbed my attention from beginning to end. I truly love Adrian Blue's stories because to me she's mastered the art of writing short stories with a good plot and naughty scenes so perfectly.
What about10. Can we do10 stars??? I just finished the collection and I felt like I just finished an excellent movie series in my head. Though each story was short and sweet, like eating an exotic chocolate treat, I cannot say enough great things about author! Begging and thirsting for more!!!
This was a nice anthology. My favorites were: Taken by the bat, Tempting the monster, and The Widow and the Wolf. There wasn’t a whole lot of world building or character development. All of the stories were short, sweet and straight to spicy. All in all, not a bad collection of stories. Just don’t expect any depth to the stories.
I loved each and every story! I really appreciate how short each story was but also how each story was connected in some way to the town of "Deathfall," so they truly stayed on theme. I've read a couple of different collections by this author, but this truly was my favorite one.
The ladys of Deathfall find their monsters, or should I say the monsters find them. It's the only town of its kind. Monsters of all kinds find their mates in this short and sweet collection of stories.
Smut that you'll love! It's always fun to see what happens next in their lives and what the children are like. It's quick read but it'll have you smiling.

I enjoyed reading this book but I think it would be confusing had I not read the previous ones as the story starts pretty abrupt. It was a nice read, perfect for an afternoon.

Love this collection. Read them individually first but just had to reread them when the collection came out. Wonderful author, who pulls you right into the story. Highly recommend every time.
I never considered Minotaurs, bats, and other such "monsters" as sexy. But after reading this anthology, I have changed my mind. They are alpha, caring, possessive, and comforting. These mates are more than they seem.
These are some great short stories. I like how they are all from the same area. If you want a taste for some Monsters and like them breeders, this is a good place to start.
Mashup of a lot of very short stories (all 20 to 35 pages). Monsters and matings. None have any real angst or OMD/OWD. No cheating or breakups. No epilogues. Some of them felt like HFN but I suppose they are mostly HEA. All spicy. Easy to read. Palate cleansers.
