Amber Wolf Duology #2

Blue Pointed Star

Rate this book
A new queen must save the Realm.
But those who would deny her the crown are strong.

Lish Taylor may have come to accept that she’s the rightful Queen of Airlie, but when the Custodian of the throne accuses her of murder before she can make her claim, she is forced to retreat to a neighbouring court without her crown or title. Both the Realm and her home continent of Driarn are still dying, and Lish needs two things to stop their destruction: the authority of the crown, and the remaining pieces of the Blue Pointed Star.

Underground assassin Aeyva Kaylneau is one step closer to fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a Sentinel. But even as she helps forge Lish’s path to the crown, Aeyva’s past allegiances jeopardise everything she is fighting for and bring the Court of Airlie to its knees.

Determined to form a powerful alliance to aid her ascension to the throne, Lish and her friends set out to arm themselves with valuable knowledge — knowledge another court will take in return for supporting an un-crowned Queen. But what they uncover is a much more sinister plan that will mean the downfall of not just the Realm, but the human world as well.

As the human and Calahi worlds crumble around them, Lish and Aeyva must battle towering forces of magic and avarice to save both worlds — and the people they love. But even as the pieces fall into place, the path ahead threatens to destroy all they hold dear.

Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice rating: 🌶🌶🌶

💢 TW: Pregnancy loss (historical, off-page), imprisonment, violence, death (low-detail on-page), sexual scenes (semi-detailed).

Don't let the cover fool you- this is a fantasy romance set in an urban/ futuristic dystopian world, where magic, life, and the entire world itself are on the verge of collapse. Once you've read the book, you realise the floral/ gem/ butterfly cover has so much meaning, and actually ties beautifully to the story.

Blue Pointed Star is very well-written; I was sucked in from page one, and struggled to put the book down until the very last page. The plot was perfectly paced, with some fantastic twists along the way, some of which I had a niggling feeling about, but others that left me blindsided.

This book is dual POV, with one of the POVs that of Lish, and the other being Aevya. Which leads me to this- while the main characters are a F/M couple, there is also a sapphic (F/F) romance that blooms, and I just adored the spark and intimacy between the two Calahi females.

This was a book that gripped my heart from start to finish. I laughed, cried, giggled, gasped, felt hollow and joyous. This connection to the characters and how they are feeling is always the mark of an excellent book for me.

I loved this book, it was the perfect conclusion to the Amber Wolf duology, and I can't wait until my purchased physical copies arrive, because I think this duology will be one that I re-read for years to come.

☆ I received an ARC of this book from the author, which in no way sways my honest opinion, as stated in this review ☆

Wow. This book was the sequel we needed in so many ways! It was an emotional rollercoaster that had me laughing and definitely crying at some points just as the first did. I also fell in love with the family Lish found along the way.

Lish is a strong-willed woman who, even as she struggles throughout the massive changes each day, manages to be nothing but the best person she can be, sometimes even to her detriment. Lochlain is a kind, gentle but powerful man who has such an important role to fill at her side. Seeing their relationship evolve past the simple romance they had in the first book is beautiful and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Following the newest perspective from Aeyva —a loving but broken friend with her own dark secrets— was an interesting new way to view our main characters and their backstories. I especially loved seeing the budding romance forming that began in the previous book.

One character that was an unexpected gem in this book was Nuala, and I will never get over Chapter 30. Ever.

The only reason this book isn't 5 stars for me is purely due to feeling almost too long. Don't get me wrong I'm a fantasy reader, I love a long book, but sometimes it felt as of it dragged a bit or got a bit lost in too many small details. However, the story always picked back up and you're hit with excitement all over again!

Overall I was captivated by this book, and the ending wasn't something I could predict from the start either, which was refreshing. I truly loved this duology and I can't wait to read more from Lauren in the future

Thank you again for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Originally I was drawn to this series because of the beautiful cover but the story between those covers was one that grabbed me and kept me wanting more. Don't be fooled by all those pretty flowers, this is a story of a tough, resilient female MC and her band of determined friends and supporters. This part of the story is told from the POV of Lish, our MC and Aeyva, one of Calahia. They both are strong, fierce, independent characters who have not had an easy time growing up. Each has demons to overcome and tough decisions to make. Self doubt afflicts them both.

The choice to make Aeyva the second pov in this book was part of what made this book even more interesting than the first. Aeyva is a very complicated character with secrets to hide. She has battled to find her place in society, but feels that she is unworthy of both her place at Lish's side and of being loved. I couldn't help but be sympathetic towards her as she struggled with her choices. Though at times, I felt she just needed to see that her experiences are what made her into a remarkable warrior, protector and member of the society.

This book also had much more drama, action and excitement than the first. There were many nail-biting incidents and a few totally shocking moments where I had to stop and “What?????” The reader is also introduced to more characters from the Court of Airlie, some friends but some decidedly evil and loathesome.

The world of Lish expands as she ventures into new areas as well as back to Ryhton to find some answers. I think this helped to bring her story full circle and highlight the differences between the human and Calahi realms. It reminded the reader that the fate of each race depended upon Lish and her quest.

This is a very satisfsying conclusion to the Amber Wolf story. A fantasy story filled with captivating characters, a plot that is intricate and clever with action and surprises to hold your attention until the very last page.

What a strong ending for this wonderful duology! After finding out that she's the rightful Queen of Airlie, Lish is determined to do her best for her newfound home; but her enemies are neither few, nor weak, and they'll do everything in their power to ensure that Lish stays away from the throne. With both the Calahi and the human realms in danger, Lish will need to come into her power and rely on her allies to save the worlds.

In this book we see Lish grow into her role as Airlie's next monarch, as well as the hero both worlds need. I was really invested in her journey, since it was slow but steady and gave rise to an incredible main character. Another bonus in this book was having Aeyva's point of view, since she offered so much insight into Calahi culture without falling into infodump! Besides, she's an extraordinarily complex character who has a lot to offer and many secrets to keep, which made her chapters so compelling.

The ever-rising stakes in this second installment had me at the edge of my seat, and I for the life of me couldn't put the book down. Nothing about the story was predictable, and nobody was safe... O' my poor heart! Some say that second parts are never good, but Lauren Searson-Patrick definitely debunks the old saying with this explosive conclusion to the Amber Wolf duology. Highs, lows, friends, foes, love, heartbreak... This book had it all!

Can't wait to see what Lauren does next!

5⭐️ Blue pointed star. This book was everything!

Amber Wolf was one of my favourite reads of 2022 and, as a duology, I needed a lot in the follow up book to finish this amazing journey.

Blue Pointed Star gave me everything I needed and so much more.

The spoiler free review:

Our main character Lish is strong, capable, brave, loyal and ready to step into her role as Queen. Part of what makes her so endearing is that alongside this strength we also get to see her vulnerability, her kindness and her willingness to sacrifice for others.

So many have written about young female characters who are secret royalty and the key to saving to world, but this author has mastered this plot. Searson-Patrick has written Lish in such a believable way, allowing Lish, already a trained warrior and leader, to slowly grow into her role and into her powers. She surrounds Lish with equally strong, dedicated and powerful friends, family and allies with whom she can partner with to fight those who aim to ruin their world. They all play an important role and offer her the assistance she needs making sure that she never walks this path alone.

Introducing Aeyva’s point of view alongside Lish’s was exactly what I needed to hear about the Realm’s history and the backstory of the Calahi without an info dump. But more than just eloquently executed character development and world building, hearing the story from Aeyva, a complicated, dark and brooding character with many secrets offered such an interesting perspective. I found myself rooting for Aeyva’s life to shift, for her to capture her love, to be released from her dark shackles and to find happiness…even while they were trying to save the world.

There were a lovely sprinkling of romances, all at different stages in their relationships, which were written so beautifully. Will and Sophie quietly in the background, Rory and Riley coyly interested in each other but it was the soulful love between Lish and Lochlain and the potential depth of love between Clara and Aeyva which captured my heart so completely.

The story is action packed, even more than the first book! I could not put it down, reading late into the night to follow the journey of Lish and Aeyva and their found family. There was nothing predictable about this plot and the author was not afraid to let her characters fail in heartbreaking ways.

With both the Realm of the Calahi and the human world of Driarn in danger we are first taken down two adventure pathways as our characters seek to collect information about the situation before working towards a solution. It was so satisfying to watch our characters do everything they could to prepare for the fight of their life before throwing them into the main action. Eventually these pathways become one and our adventure forces our characters to make some big decisions requiring big actions. (No, I’m not giving any hints about what happens cause that would spoil the exciting adventure for you!)

Being a duology I worried that I wouldn’t be as immersed in the characters and the journey as I would a long series but I had no need to worry.

Searson-Patrick had me completely invested in every single chapter in our core group, each character so different and so important. The story flowed so easily and gave me everything I wanted, highs and lows, happiness and deep sadness, love, friendship, soul connections, relationships, family, adventure, magic, interesting connections, clear history of events and the world, a need bigger than our own… I was here for this story, every step of the way.

Thankfully, the ending was perfection… but I am not sharing that!

The Amber Wolf duology has my entire heart and is one that I will continue to re-read so that I can keep these characters and this story clear in my mind.

**This book was given to me as an ARC from the author and this is an honest review in my own words.

Lish has a long list on her 'to-do' list:
1. Get on the throne
2. Find all the pieces of the blue pointed star sapphire
3. Stop the givings and get the magic back to the people of the Realm
4. Oh yeah, save the Realm and the human world
5. And, finally, live happily ever after with Lochlain!

Aeyva's list is just as simple:
1. Get out of The Society
2. Become a Sentinal
3. Ignore everyone's suggestions about becoming a Mayorynx
4. Save the Realm and the human world
5. Admit her feelings to the love of her life

Not hard at all, right?? Ha!

This was a gorgeous second story in the Amber Wolf duology. I was really worried that it would not be as good as the first book, but I am happy to say it was better! The twists and turns. There were so many times where I could not guess what was going to happen next. The relationships and love stories. The inclusion of Aeyva's story kept the whole thing very fresh. It was just excellent. And I am sure there is more stories to tell of the Realm! Kailoh? Rory??

*Spoiler Free* Book Two did not disappoint!!!!

After becoming so invested in Amber Wolf I was a bit nervous to read Blue Pointed Star! But I shouldn't have been as it DELIVERED!!!!

Continuing the journey of Lish to reach her destiny and to save the realm, the path becomes increasingly more complex.

The author certainly has a knack for creating an epic adventure without it feeling like its too much!
This book added more complex interpersonal relationships which was so well done and even though I wasn't sure how I would feel with a Dual POV I think it really benefited the story to do so.

The emotion and heartbreak in this book was devastating, but in a good way. It made it feel so much more genuine.

The inclusion of F/F relationship was so effortless and natural it worked SO well. Often I feel that in some books it is included for insincere reasons however that was NOT the case it this book and it was beautiful to read.

A fantastic conclusion to the Duology. I am very keen for whatever the authors next book may be!

An emotional roller coaster! Lish battles with her head and her heart in this book, trying to balance her wants and needs with what would be required of her as Queen. In order to try claim her crown, however, many pieces need to fit just right, but of course nothing is easy.

I enjoyed the story being told by different perspectives. Aeyva’s story was an intriguing one. The women in this series are all such strong characters, but I liked seeing their vulnerable sides too.

This was a great ending to this duet. I’ve enjoyed both parts, but this final book tied everything up really well, and the writing made it so easy to just get pulled along for the ride.

This was a fantastic ending to the Amber Wolf duology. It introduced just enough new content to not overwhelm the original narrative and the conclusion wrapped up the books nicely. Love interests were aplenty, and this book had quite a bit of spicy content - not overwhelming, but detailed enough to raise a blush - and a sapphic storyline that complemented the plot nicely. Worlds were built well in Amber Wolf, so everything that happens in Blue Pointed Star is understandable, and the allegory of the tale becomes clearer as the book goes on. There is a great message here for everyone. Team Kailoh all the way :)

I didn’t think it could get better than book 1… it did!

Blue Pointed Star is action packed and twisty-turny, and kept me on the edge of my seat. I flew through it, desperate to know how it all ended, and I was not disappointed. I loved seeing the characters and relationships from Amber Wolf develop and couldn’t get enough of Aeyva’s point of view!

I can’t recommend this book highly enough!!

Epic fantasy

This is the second book in a duo that takes you on an epic adventure. It deals with all sorts of issues in an interesting and sensitive way. I laughed, I cried, I got anxious for the characters and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

This book was a sit on the edge of your seat ride! Fast paced and full of adventure, with a little spice! The second book did the first one justice! I loved getting to know the characters even more. Aeyva’s side of the story was great. I feel like her journey could have been a separate book. But that being said her story was seamlessly woven in with Lish’s which was nice.
I do wish that we had Lochlain’s POV. I sort of felt that he was a side character for the most of the book. However I did like the focus on the strong FMC. I am happy with the HEA and that it didn't end in a pregnancy. Also I really hope that the author writes a whole book about Kailoh!! I loved his character so much!
