I liked the the idea and premise of the story but didn’t like the execution of it

The plot was decent, but I’m only giving this book 2 stars because this author was all over the place with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person tenses. Honestly, I just hope she puts my $2.99 to good use and furthers her education with it. I’ve been looking all over for info on this author, but cannot find anything. If it’s a kid using a pseudonym, I’ll change my rating, but NO adult should be allowed to publish with this skill set.

I'm sorry to whoever likes this book but this was probably the worst thing I've read in a long time lol. But no hate to the author, I'm sure she worked really hard and it's always impressive even having a book published ♥️ maybe it's just cause I've grown out of Y/A

Ok so.. This book starts off almost exactly like “Crave” by Tracy Wolf. So it’s a story we have all read before. Super natural human has powers she is unaware of and has to suddenly get shipped off to a “magic” boarding school to find this out. It’s full of supernatural people and of course we have a vampire. But we don’t get the cool bad ass vampires in this book. No we get one that gets knocked out in first round of fights. Like umm ok 🤔. Definitely not no Damon Salvatore or Vega brothers. And this one can only be powerful if it’s dark. What kind true blood 🩸stuff is she bringing back with night time vamps. No one likes that anymore. I just couldn’t get behind a wimpy vampire having to be rescued by a human who just learned she powers less than two seconds ago and all of a sudden she miraculously knows how to to control them in a blink of a eye. It was all over the place and too much stuff was unexplained. I personally listen to the audio version. Do yourself a favor do not listen to this book.

The characters were too immature for me, and no different than the cast of EVERY YA novel series...was so put off by the characters and storyline similarities to EVERY YA novel series, I threw in at 50%...just not enough unique qualities to perk my interest!

Writing is pretty bad. Typical vampire story line and suddenly the girl becomes a hero. Too cliche.

Don't hate anything at all, and don't adore anything either. It's a Harry Potter-esque story but without the dynamic and awe-inspiring world building

2025 52 Book Challenge - 3) Title Starts With The Letter "M"

This is literally a knock off poorly written Harry Potter. An orphan goes to a boarding school, and that's pretty much where the thin plot ends because the rest of the book reads more like a plot summary of what the author wanted to write than an actual book.

I think this was a great opener for the series. It’s different but Intriguing. You have hawthorn, which is the school that houses students who may be werewolf’s or witches… some form of power or magic. Your FMC doesn’t know it yet. It’s super exciting. Very YA but gives off HP or Wednesday vibes. For not being a big fantasy reader , I enjoyed it.

Amatőr volt az írás. A plot-ra azt hittem, hogy egy mellékfordulat és nem a nagy cucc. Meglepően könnyen és gyorsan tudtam azért olvasni.

I'm intrigued enough by the cliff hanger ending that I might get the next book in the series. Ultimately, this book left so many open questions. Maybe that was intentional, to get you to buy more in the series, but it was more unsatisfying. Still, I did enjoy the story line and it held my attention as I was waiting for answers to be revealed.
I've read other reviews that refer to this book as Harry Potter meets Twilight, and I can agree on the similarities. However, this book lacked the detailed scene description I would have loved in order to be close to Harry Potter. The stage was not set well, so I had a hard time immersing myself in a world where I don't know where the pool house is in relation to the school or the distance between them.
The book starts with a long dark journey to the school through the woods. But later, the kids walk into town and then can hear screams coming from the school and are close enough to run back? There were some other issues with the writing switching from first to third person, and a few annoying instances of the main character making observations in her head, repeating the same thought a few sentences later and/or then saying the thought out loud.

The writing itself wasn’t as bad but my god was everything super over the top and the characters were extremely immature and over emotional, plus the main character was just straight up annoying.
The romance plot had absolutely no chemistry, instant love (cause what do you mean you couldn’t exist without him when you literally JUST met him???).
Typical cliche book where the main character has no idea who she is and suddenly is the hero with superpowers, while also falling in love with the bad boy.
I’m sure the author put a lot of work into it, but I’m so glad I got this during Stuff your kindle day for free. Hopefully it gets better during the other books, but I won’t be finding out.

This book | series has been on my TBR for at least a year now. I see why not. Also, it's a quick, easy read.
I like the IDEA 💡 of the story | plot and twist the author is trying to give, but it reads very elementary kinda. Only because the story is semi everywhere, and it doesn't give you the full idea in the first book and confusing. But i will definitely give book 2 a chance and let thT determine if I will continue on with the series.

Honestly, this book came across as juvenile.

The writing, the characters, the “plot.”

I use the term “plot” loosely, because there is only the vaguest outline of a plot in this book.

A girl is sent to a secret special school because she is secretly special. There’s a mean girl bully. There’s a vampire. There are mysterious enemies. There’s a lot of mystery that serves no purpose.

What this book lacks is any kind of depth.

This one sounded interesting when I first listened to the introduction.
It is actually a young adult fiction novel but it kind of reminded me a bit of some of the tv shows about wolves and vampires so I gave it a try.
It was ok. I f I want to find out more about the story I need to go on and get number 2 in the series. I won’t be doing it any time soon.

So disppointing, had a promising start but there was literally no point to this book and so far to this story. Author hides behind and uses secrets as an excuse not to have a proper agenda or world building and passes it off as a mystery like it’s actually dumb at this point.

Crave, Divergent, and Twilight combined only a whole lot slower. I waited and waited for it to pick up and it finally did the last two chapters and ended on a cliffhanger. Uggggghhhhh

Pretty good story ending in a cliffhanger. I went in blind for this story and quickly became interested in the characters who are attending a magical school. Definitely interested in seeing where the story picks up with book two.

Mortal was an interesting read, I felt like it was a little bit slow and confusing at times. The main character Winter Grace's father had died and in his will she was to attend Hawthorne School for the last 8 months of her Senior year. Everything is eerie and confusing for her as she is finding out different things about the school and almost everyone is secretive and wont tell her anything because she is supposed to find out by herself.

not my cup of tea

Extremely predictable. Main character is obnoxious. She becomes obsessed with the bad boy the second she sees him. It had a lot of potential but just fell flat.

This is basically just a cheap mix of Twilight and Crave. Literally the same things happen from both series and in this one. Ridiculous.

I like that it was a quick read, and the flow of the pace, but I wish there was a little bit more development to the plot. If there was a little more information given toward the storyline, I would wonder less about the details and more so about the cliffhanger ending!
