The Unredeemables #1

Master of Lies

Rate this book
Deadly. Relentless. Cold as ice.

Jed Clearwater is one of the Unredeemables, an elite group of ex-Special Forces warriors who bonded in combat and promised to have each other’s backs forever. Or so he said…until he sold my brother Shane out for money.

He’s never looked at me, but I’ve wanted him since I was a child. I tracked the bastard down, to a maximum security prison. He knows where Shane was taken, and I’ll do anything to get that intel. Even seduce him…insofar as I can seduce a man who’s locked behind bars.

I hate that I still lust after my brother’s killer. I can’t even hide it. I might as well use these emotions I can’t control to get what I want. I’ll be safe enough. That hard, muscular body and those smoldering eyes will be behind bulletproof glass. He’ll be cuffed, shackled…controlled.

What’s the worst he could do?

She’s drawing down the lightning…

What was it about me and crazy bad luck? The gorgeous bombshell’s timing could not have been shittier. The day of my prison break, a sexpot who fixates on felons struts into the visiting chamber, picks up the phone, and blows my freaking mind with her scorching sexual fantasies.

I’m so close to getting the info I need to track down my kidnapped friend and clear my name, but this luminous blonde has just made my enemies sit up and take notice. So on top of everything else, now I have to scramble to pull her gorgeous ass out of the fire, too.

Now we’re on the run together, one step ahead of total mayhem. She’s the most seductive woman I’ve ever come across, but I can’t let down my guard.

Because mayhem is gaining ground fast…

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

I started writing my first romance novel in secret. I was working a temp job in an insurance office in Manhattan at the time, and the office manager had made it clear that even if there was nothing to do, I still had to look busy-- never one of my big talents. I felt bad about the wasted time, though, and I needed something to round out my other chosen career, which was singing. Yeah, that's right. Most artists choose a more practical Plan B to back up their improbable Plan A. Me? No way. "Long Shot" is my middle name.

So I sneakily set up a Document 1 and a Document 2 with a spreadsheet on it. If my Boss du Jour walked by I could quick-like-a-bunny switch screens, and whenever the coast was clear, I went back to my story. Not that I was slacking, mind you. If there was work to be done, I did it. The sneakiness felt familiar, though, because I've been teased about reading romances since I was a kid. I think the day I finally grew up was the day I stopped trying to cover up what I was reading on the bus, train or subway. Let people think whatever they like.

It wasn't until I moved to Italy (details of that Long Shot provided later on) that I got serious about writing, though. I found myself with many long, quiet days alone with nothing to do, so I slogged my way bravely to the end of the manuscript and sent it out. Everybody rejected it-except for Kensington. I wrote for them for a few years, and then made a bid for an erotic novella for the new Brava imprint, and oh joy, they accepted it. Then I wrote BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. And so on, and so forth.

That's how I started. I can't think of anything I'd rather do. I never knew it would be so scary, and so hard . . . all that solitude and silence, a blank computer screen, and no one to blame. But still. It's worth it. It's great.

The story is good and exciting, always something going on, it’s edge of your seat stuff.
The characters are confusing at the start, I felt like I’d missed a book, but was assured this was the first in the series. However I stuck it out and found it ok, I wish I could find more expressive words for the description but ok if as far as I’d push it.

Characters are interesting and the ending was good too, it’s not one I’d run to the shops to buy the next, however that’s my opinion, make sure to read other reviews too and make up your own mind.

My thx to Netgally for the Arc,
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

I'm a huge fan of Shannon and her uber alphas. I was totally engrossed in this one at first, but then somewhere around the 15% mark it began to fizzle out until I was completely disconnected from the story by 55% and called it quits. I'm definitely looked on the series and will read more. Sadly this one just didn't click for me.

Overall Opinion :
This is the first book that I have read by this author and it was a pleasant read. The chemistry is good but it kind of seemed dragged lmao. I loved the ending and the hero as well!

The plot is good and since I am a huge fan of enemies to lovers with second chances , I was hooked into this one. It also convinced me to see more books by this author and add them to my TBR! Might pick them up soon.

I got this ARC through netgalley.

2⭐️ thank you NetGalley for this ARC. This review is entirely my own after reading this novel.

K, first of all, if we’re gona write in first person, let’s make sure we stick with it. I got so confused several times when there were typos from the first person POV.

Now, this was entertaining, I liked the idea of the plot. Freya sounded like such a badass from the beginning, going undercover to find out what happened to her brother with the guy that was framed for her brother’s disappearance, but that quickly morphed into her just being dumb and stubborn for 75% of the book. Jed, for an ex special forces guy, was an idiot. His undercover operation didn’t make any sense with the rest of his personality because he made so many stupid mistakes for an ex special forces turned high tech security guy. Freya and Jed’s personalities made no sense. What killed me the most was their out of the blue declaration of love. Like what?!?! I almost put the book away at that point.

Anyways. This sounded so promising. And I was really looking forward to it. The plot sounded so fun but things quickly spiraled.

I really wanted to like this, some parts were good and kept me engrossed, but the misplaced words was distracting in the end, I feel like the book needs an editor.
The storyline took me until about 15-20% before I really got engaged, like other reviewers it felt like we were jumping into middle of a series, also I’m pretty ok with insta love but I struggled with the declarations of love and marriage proposal after 3 days.
The suspense was good and the romance was spicy, I might give the next book a go once released

Rather short imo, but memorable characters, trademark steam and over-the-top romantic suspense held my attention throughout the story. It wouldn't be ShanMcK without a weird supernatural/tek twist, but ShanMcK also does the forbidden love of my brother's friend well too. So I ended up really liking it.

The last series like this sorta dwindled off for me, and I have yet to read the final book. Hope this series doesnt go down the same route.

What a way to kick off a new series! Master of Lies is the first book in Shannon McKenna's new Unredeemables series, and the hero of this installment is Jed, who has been undercover in prison for 5 months, trying to discover who set up the attack on the Unredeemables tech company and killed everyone but him (they tried) and kidnapped his best friend, Shane. But his escape with his brilliant but autism spectrum cellmate, Mickey, has been planned to occur in 3 weeks, and all that changes when beautiful but dim bubblehead, Sandee, who has been sending Jed letters and sexy photos, is a complication he doesn't need or want. He's finally agreed to allow her to visit him, and although he's kept a low profile, Sandee gets way too much attention, and all hell is about to break loose. The escape plan is a disaster, his cellmate is brutally murdered (and if you can't stand gruesome, this is not the book for you), and he grabs Sandee to save her and they are both soon on the run. This was quite a startling way to kick off a novel and it gets 5 stars from this reader.

It turns out that Sandee is really Shane's younger sister, Freya, who started to crush on Jed at age 14. She's now 26 and on a mission her other brother, Ethan, has been kept in the dark about her plan. Luckily, it takes some time for Jed to realize just who Sandee is and since Jed was set up to take the fall for the attack on his company, and Shane was not among the victims, she believes that Jed was behind the attack and knows where her brother is. The reason for the attacks is made clear--Shane has the password to a computer algorithm that would allow the user to easily hack into any system, the Pentagon, world banks, any system anywhere, and the bad guys want that program, and are not above torture, murder, or anything else to get their hands on it, and now they're hot on the trail of Freya and Jed, ready to kidnap, torture and kill her to get Shane to give up the password. Action-packed is a mild way to describe what Ms. McKenna has these two characters endure as they try to stay alive and find Shane.

Steamy is another word for this novel, and as Ms. McKenna's two adversarial comrades try to stay alive, keeping one step ahead of their enemies, the tension and attraction between them heats up--does it ever! If graphic and frequent sex scenes offend you, once again, this is not the book for you, but, quite frankly, I loved it. These two characters practically set this book on fire. In all my years of reading romantic suspense novels, there are few authors who can do that as well as Ms. McKenna.

While we get lots of information about what drives Freya to take this ill-advised and reckless chance, I would have liked a bit more background on Jed, but once the action got going, Jed's backstory was the last thing on my mind. So, how does it all end? Do Freya and Jed find and rescue Shane? Do both survive being tracked and attacked by the evildoers? Do they mange to outwit the bad guys? Where does their steamy yet fractious relationship go? Since I don't do spoilers, you'll just have to get your hands on a copy of this sexy, suspenseful novel and find out for yourself. I highly recommend it. It's scheduled for release on 4/11/23.

I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions stated are my own.

I’d read Shannon McKenna years ago and really thought to give her another go, seeing as how I did like a few of her books back then…and the blurb of ‘Masters of Lies’ seemed morally ambivalent enough for me to request an ARC of it.

First chapter in however, I kept getting the odd feeling that I’d been flung straight into the middle of a series of sorts—with a back-story that was sorely lacking somewhere—with a hurried info-dump that filtered through in bits and pieces. Still, it does feel like a suspenseful twist on the best friend’s sister who has grown up type of trope, except that Freya's entire precedent to do so was based on an unbelievable, forehead-smacking act that's beyond batshit crazy at best.

The start of the book seemed great, with Jed Clearwater plotting an imminent prison break as just Freya Masters barreling in with a (frankly shallow and stupid) plan to bimbo-seduce the truth out of him and throws his well-made plans into disarray. As Jed looks to clear his name and Freya searches for her brother, their paths converge at a prison where Jed is undercover seeking intel...and the latter sweeping in as an unhinged, attention-seeking nutcase with a case of Hybristophilia.

Despite the relentless pacing, the POV-switches (first person for the protagonists, third person for the baddies) threw me off quite badly, along with the characters whom I just couldn’t seem to like at all. The combination Jed’s exaggerated brutishness with Freya’s half-arsed stupidity going through more than half the book gave me whiplash as a consequence of them both keeping up their appearances until the inevitable happens. The fallout was expected but difficult to read through not in an angsty way, but in a way that had scenes cycling through TSTL-moments, hysterical screaming, cold shoulders and sex (the only way they can properly communicate it seems) within a short amount of time. That they suddenly said ‘I love you’ only 3 days into barely knowing each other, made their relationship feel more like an adrenaline-fuelled romp which skirted only emotional surfaces.

I did start out enthusiastically, loving the idea that both Jed and Freya were hiding behind their own web of lies and had to find some way to disentangle themselves from the tangled web they wove, but that soon became an honest struggle to finish when I found myself reading about a relationship that simply looked like a train wreck in the making from the very start.

First book in The Unredeemables Series
Romantic Suspense
Somewhat graphic violence
Descriptive sex scenes
Currently can be read as a stand-alone

Jed Clearwater is working undercover in prison in hopes of getting information on what happened to his missing friend Shane. While there he received letters from a woman named Sandee who he believes to be just one of those lonely women who likes to fangirl on convicts. Until she shows up on visitors day.

Freya Masters has had a crush on Jed since she was fourteen when he came home with her brother, Shane, while both were on leave from their Ranger Regiment. Since Shane disappeared, Freya has been on her own mission to find him and where better to start than with Jed. When she shows up for visitation disguised as Sandee, Jed tries to turn her away but can’t get her out of his mind.

A planned prison break gone wrong finds them on the same side to find Shane. While the attraction between them can’t be denied and her true identity known, Jed wants to keep Freya safe and out of the way but the determined woman refuses to be shut out of the plan. Against Jed’s better judgment, they take on the bad guys who are trying to keep them from finding Shane even if it means death.

I have always enjoyed Shannon McKenna’s books because of her excellent ability to form a complex and compelling story for the reader who never knows what to expect next. This first book in her new series does just that. However, the somewhat gruesome description of the violence and the character who, at one point, was purposely left behind alone and unable to escape was slightly uncomfortable for me to read. Despite these parts, I do recommend this book and look forward to the second book in the series, Master of Secrets, releasing in July 2023.

After Jed Clearwater was framed for selling out one of his best friends, he's been undercover in prison trying to get answers from one of the inmates that worked with his enemy. He just about to clear his name and make his escape when a blonde bombshell, the woman who's been writing him and seemingly falls for convicts, visits him and puts herself in his enemies' crosshairs. Now, not only does he have to escape, he has to rescue her as well. No amount of combat training can keep this particular troublemaker out of danger, but soon rescuing her is more important than his own life.
Freya is desperately searching for her missing brother, determined to get answers out of Jed even if she had to trick him by seducing him. All undercover of course. But she gets more than she planned for when armed men show up at her hotel and Jed shows up to save her at the last minute. She never planned on confronting him without bars between them. How can she help him find her brother when he's determined to keep her safe?
This was a fun read, though a bit unrealistic. Freya's logic, even when using her bimbo undercover role, was shaky. One minute she's scared of him, the next she's submitting to a wild and crazy night. And don't get me started on the instalove! After three days?! But I did enjoy the suspense of them on the run from enemies and how tough and capable Jed's character is. I'm interested to find out what happens next, if they ever find Nicole and Shane.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I liked this book, it was entertaining.
What I love about Shannon McKenna's style is that the starting point in her books gives you the feeling that things are already happening and you're just joining in. It immediately catches your attention and piques your interest. I also like that the endings have a lot of groveling.
Although I don't really like the first person point of view, that wasn't what bothered me while reading.
The plot was interesting and fun, the development of things keeps you hooked till the end. However, the characters, namely Jed and Ethan, needed to be less jerks! Just because you're a guy in charge, doesn't mean you know it all - okay, yes Ethan becomes more bearable by the second half of the book, but he's still an idiot.
On the other hand, Freya's character was strong, smart, and witty but she had to deal with men set in their ways with macho complexes who undermined her, which contributed to a lot of frustrating moments. And that's why I felt the dynamic between the two main characters a bit bumpy.
I really hope the characters in the next books would have different mindsets and would include the Drake brothers.

When Shannon McKenna has a new release I drop everything and run to pick it up. Master of Lies is the first book in her Unredeemables series. It begins with Jed Clearwater being undercover in prison trying to clear his name. Everyone thinks that he sold out his friend and former teammate Shane Masters who was also a part of the Unredeemables. Shane's family has been looking for him for months and when Freya Masters comes upon information on a prisoner who looks suspiciously like the assumed to be dead Jed Clearwater she devises her own plan to get information about her brother. She creates a persona of a girl named "Sandee". Sandee writes Jed aka James letters while he's in prison that she wants to meet him and get to know him. Jed has bigger issues than dealing with a prison fangirl but one day he agrees to let Sandee visit him inside. That visit is the beginning of a fast moving snowball of problems. There will be a prison break followed by outsiders who really want Jed dead and would love nothing more than to get their hands on Freya. This is a complex story that I feel will start the beginning of a great romantic suspense series. It was told from multiple POVs. It had all the drama, heat and emotions of a McKenna book that I love. I will be continuing with the series and hopefully the next one comes soon.

I first started reading Shannon McKenna almost 20 years ago when I got sucked into the twisty world of the McClouds. I've been waiting for another world like that ever since we said goodbye to them and I feel like this series is it!

It starts off with out hero/heroine each trapped in their own web of deceit and the suspense and action just keep building from there. A new twist on best-friend's little sister and I am here for it. I loved watching Freya as she breaks out of the protective bubble her brothers have placed her in. She is dead-set on proving her brains, her wits, and her worth. And it is delightful to watch! Jed has only one goal, find the truth and save his friend. He has only ever known loss of anyone close to him. We get to watch these two battle first with each other and then for each other, as they come to realize they are stronger together.

I can't wait to see where this new series takes us. Waiting with bated breath for the next Unredeemable, much like we all waited for Kevin way back when!

Shannon Mckenna was an unknown author for me. But the blurb of Master of Lies made me curious.

And I’m very happy to have been granted the arc, although the suspense was killing me near the end. The story is fast paced, sometimes a little bit over the top and a wee little bit unbelievable. But it keeps you on the edge of your seat. At the start of the book it can be a bit confusing, since Freya is in disguise as an other character. And since this is the first book of the series, all the characters are new. But, once you have learned who is who, the story will start to unfold.

The scenes with torture and violence were a bit too explicit for my likings, but since I’m more of a Disney happy kind of girl, I don’t think it should stop you. In all a very entertaining book and I’ll certainly will look out to the next part of the series. Four out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.

I've been a longtime fan of McKenna's and count the standalone HOT NIGHT, and first three McCloud Brothers books among my favorite romantic suspenses. Plus, her early novellas were so readable. She lost me for a while with the Obsidian Files and Hellhound Brotherhood books, and the two Harlequin series ... so, imagine how totally excited I was to return to what I consider to be the O.G. McKenna style. She writes a mean bad guy, a complicated hero, and a heroine full of moxie. There's nothing light and airy about this story; it's full octane from the first page, but it's so readable. I love the inherent obstacles Jed and Freya encounter, and I love that their shared goals eventually shift from their tangental endpoints to one of parallel efforts. Plus, who's unredeemable? Not this group of guys. I can't wait to read the next one!

What a great start to a new series the Unredeemable's. It starts with Jed Clearwater one an elite group of ex-Special Forces warriors. Jed has been accused of selling out his friend Shane McMasters got money, who's been kidnapped. I love the heroine Freya McMasters she's intelligent, sassy and quite the inventor of secret equipment similar to a female James Bond. Freya has had a crush on Jed since she was a teenage, but Jed doesn't even recognize her further helping her plan to get information from him in prison. These two butt heads and I love their witty banter, they're chemistry becomes very steamy as they're on the run for their lives trying to gather information on Shane's kidnapping and who's trying to frame Jed. A story that for me took a little while to figure out. Once I did it was a good story fast paced and full of action. It starts with Jed Clearwater in prison who at one time was an Army Ranger, he and others got out and worked together for a security firm, and due to a program that was written by one of the group's brothers, the brother and others were killed or made to look, they were. Jed lived and ended up in prison he found one person who had worked with someone that stole the code and had hidden it, he is wanting to find the hiding spot to clear himself and others. Meanwhile, a woman named Saddie has been writing Jed though Jed does not go by that name he goes by a different and Saddie is not Saadie but the sister to the brother that is missing, Jed has not seen her since she was fourteen and does did not remember her. It is not until later when someone is trying to kill them that this comes out. Jed at times is a pain especially when he handcuffs her to the bed and leaves for hours a very intense scene. That does change things between the two characters. A good story with lots of action. I received this book from Netgalley.com

SM used to be one of my favourite romantic suspense authors- she knows how to write suspense and steam. But lately I don’t seem to enjoy her books as much and this definitely fell into that category.

Our heroine’s brother is missing and she is determined to do whatever it takes to find him. She ends up writing to an inmate and pretending to be in love with him for intel and when she finally goes to meet him she ends up having to run for her life with the escaped prisoner because she is in over her head.

How the heroine could feel anything for the hero when he honestly treats her terribly and ties her up (all to protect her apparently) I have no idea. But all of a sudden they are spouting love and I am left scratching my head. If it weren’t for wanting to see what happened with the brother I think I would have stopping reading 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Wow! What sizzling romance and a hold your breath adventure.

Two very different people trying to find the same man. Read as Jed, brother in arms, with Shane comes together with Freya, sister of Shane, to find the missing man. As things get extremely dicey it takes both doing their best work to try to locate the man they both love in different ways while also falling for one another. It's hot, scary and full of action an angst. All the things that make an action romance the best.

Shannon McKenna is the best when it comes to combining these things and what a way to start a new series. I already can't wait for number two and while you're waiting go read her other sizzling series the McCloud and Friends.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Who is the Master of Lies?

I was given an arc in exchange for my honest opinion of the book.
Shannon McKenna new series called ‘The Unredeemables’.

Who is the master of lies?
Will it be Freda Masters “aka” Sandee McGillis who is trying to get information about the whereabouts of her brother Shane. Or will it be
Jed Clearwater “aka” James Craig.
Jed is trying to clear his name and also looking for Shane but runs into trouble in an effort to save “Sandee” from the baddies who are trying to kill her.
Freda knows the James is really Jed and she will do anything to find her brother even sleeping with the enemy or is he .
Their chemistry is off the charts how hot they are together and the suspense will keep the reader intrigued until the end.

What an exciting start to The Unredeemables series! It is a great introduction to Freya, who is trying to find her brother who was kidnapped. She believes Jed, a friend of her brother's is responsible. Her secretly finds Jed, hoping to seduce him into telling her his secrets. She has been in love with Jed since she was a young teen, so it is easy for her to come onto him. Jed doesn't recognize the sexy woman who is in front of him, but he sends her away, fearing for her life. Unfortunately, she has put his life and undercover identity in danger as well. So starts the fast paced adventure and race against time to find her brother, and those that took him, and clear Jed's name before they all lose their lives. Jed and Freya are both strong, intelligent and stubborn. They challenge each other, but comfort each other as well. They have great chemistry, and their passion is blazing hot. Ms. McKenna is a genius at creating the most evil characters, the best heart pounding action scenes, and also the hottest love/sex scenes and this book has it all. There are many twists and turns in this fast paced story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The secondary characters are all fascinating making me want to know more about them. This is a wonderful and exhilarating beginning to this new series and I look forward to more!

Jed and Freya... although they both start out more enemies than friends, they soon realize that they actually have the same goals ...to find out what happened to Shane, Freya's brother and Jeds friend. As we have come to expect, Shannon McKenna knows just how to weave us into the lives of these characters and keep us thinking about them even when we cannot have our face in the book. She always keeps us wanting more. Jed and Freya are more fabulous characters who are on the run and headed for a path of destruction with a fire storm of action and steamy romance! Awesome character and backstory building. I can't wait to dive into the rest of this series!!.

Master of Lies is a high intensity action packed page turner that keeps you on the edge of your seat as the twist and turns keeps you engrossed with just the right amount of drama and plenty of heat if you like alpha males and self assured know their own minds take charge woman this is the book for you. This is totally my own opinion but I did feel as if this was more a continuation of a pervious book instead of a series starter it will be quite interesting to see in what direction the author chooses to take future books. I’ve loved Shannon’s books for years with a clear favourite in the McCloud brothers series. I feel like no book has beaten that series until now! Shannon has take the spirit of that series and given it a new thriller/modern spin. I also love that she keeps the leads vulnerable and of course there are many sexy romantic content which I adore and I find Shannon does best. Do not hesitate to pick this up, easily the best sexy, romantic, thriller, suspense novel to come out of the Mckenna office this year!!.

I wasn't as impressed with this one as I'd hoped. There was just something "off". Like I was reading a bad translation where some of the figures of speech weren't interpreted correctly. The sex scenes were most of what kept me reading. The story was fine. The characters were ok. I would have liked to have a little more background, but oh well.
Beyond that, it's a quick read. Good if you want something steamy coupled with an action story. Plenty of action...and steam.
Also, note, this is not a stand alone story. You have to read the other books to get closure on plotlines and characters.

This was an action packed book! You instantly are hooked when you are learning about Freya and Jed, the guy she is after for information regarding her brother. Jed has been framed and is giving everything he has to get information to find his lost friend. The last thing he expected was to fall for the prettiest woman he had ever seen. Will they be able to get along long enough to get the information they need without being killed? I was given an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

As a first time reader of Shannon McKenna, I was quickly Jed and Freya stories. While they were both different, both had the same goal: find Freya’s brother. At first this book kept me questioning as to whether I missed the first book or a backstory in another novel, yet I quickly began to understand the characters and who they were. Shannon has written a great beginning of a new series and I just found a new author.

Shannon McKenna has again written a book that grips you and won't let you go until the end. She has created characters that you will love and some you will hate with a passion. The story has lots of action that is typically of her writing. I can't wait for the next in the series to see what will happen next.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
