Going on a road trip with my kind-of boss is not how I expected my Thanksgiving to go.
But when my mom says she’s divorcing my dad and selling my childhood home, I’ll take whatever support I can get.
And Brad is more than supportive, he’s kind, gentle, and well…totally hot.
All of which has led to me developing a tiny crush on him.
In the wake of my parent’s divorce though, I don’t know how to feel about relationships in general, much less one with my older coworker.
But Brad is breaking down my reservations, making me want to quit overthinking and cozy up to him for the rest of the holidays.
Out of Office is a forced proximity, coworkers to lovers romcom that will leave you giggling and swooning. It has all the sizzling chemistry you love, without any of the explicit scenes. Check out this bonus novella in the Sweet Peach Series, a standalone series based around best friends in Georgia.
I loved this cute little story!! I love the Sweet Peach gals and this world!
This story dealt with so much in such a short amount of pages. It dealt with adult children dealing with their parent’s divorce and the support system of friends.
I loved that it took place around Thanksgiving too! That was so much fun. 🤩 I LOVE ANNAH! She’s definitely a new fave!
Another quick read. The story was sweet, light, and straightforward. Brad and Zara are likeable characters. I didn’t realize this was part of a series.🙈
▫️ Coworkers/Boss to lovers ▫️ Age gap ▫️ Dual POV
This was a super cute read. I love the short length of the book. I was able to read it as an after breakfast reading break. It took less than an hour cover to cover. Perfect length book to read during a break from work or to relax before bed. . This is an age gap and boss & employee trope love story. Brad had an easy breezy way about him that does make you feel comfortable. I loved how he just laid it all out on the line and put the ball in her court. He was there for her when she needed someone most. Loved his grand gesture at the end. Obviously he was my fav of the book. . This is kind of a 1.5 in series of books. Turns out I’ve read the 2nd book in this series and checked out the first one on KU a while ago but still haven’t gotten around to reading it. I didn’t feel lost at all in details that happened in the book before this one. . Rating: G, clean, wholesome, fun read
Goodreads lists this as Sweet Peach 3.5, but I’m pretty sure it’s 2.5. If I’m remembering correctly, it comes during Grace’s story and before Sophie’s. So there’s that if you wanna read it in order.
I love good novellas! Based on the author’s note, I’m going with she *gets* the purpose of novellas. All the cute, swoony stuff with side characters we love from the series. No big drama or dragging parts. Just enough of a sweet story with lovable characters to read on a lazy Saturday morning. I’m glad this story is here so we could have some of Zara and Brad’s story in a happy, novella sized package.
Yall, I am love, Love, LOVING, this series!! 😍 ❤️ I know that this book is technically the 2.5 book but I had to read it now! It didn't disappoint! Brad and Zara are so sweet and adorable and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!! (insert squee of excitement). They don't quite beat Callum and Lottie on the favorites list but they are up in the top 5. 😆
I love Brad and Zara! I'm so glad they got their own book in this series - their sweet friendship, he falls first, secret crush romance was just the light funny read I needed this week!
“Morning meeting in my office,” Callum says in his usual blunt way, but his smile softens the statement. Before Charlotte, he was a man of few smiles. Now, her sunshine is rubbing off on him. “Love looks good on you, boss,” I say, and he gives me a dark look. I’ve made him double annoyed today with my comet on his love life and use of his least favorite nickname: boss. Thankfully, I’m too good at my job and too close to his future wife to be fired for my button-pushing ways. “You’re lucky Charlotte likes you.”
“Okay,” she drags out the last syllable, looking at me like I’ve lost my mind. Though I haven't’ lost it. I’ve just handed it and my heart to the pretty girl in the cubicle next to mine.
“Watch out! Christmas cheer coming through!” a booming voice sounds out. Up ahead is an elf on a unicycle, barreling toward us at top speed. I snag Zara’s arm and tug her out of the way of the rogue elf man. She looks up at me with her body pressed against my chest and giggles. Her dark eyes sparkle under thick lashes coated in mascara. My breath is gone. I’m going to need resuscitation because Zara being this close has stolen all the oxygen from my lungs.
There’s no way I’m going to recover from her being in my arms. There was something between us, I’m sure of it. Something in her eyes. I glance down at her walking beside me and catch her watching me already. She snaps her head forward, but I grin because I know the truth. She feels something more than friendship with me. And I’m going to make sure that feeling only grows. Prepare to be wooed Zara Thomas.
“Whatever you need, Z. I’m your man.” He pulls me to my feet, and my heart skips. My man, I muse. Interesting choice of words. As he leads me toward the elevators, hand on my lower back, I find I don’t hate the sound of his phrase.
Road trips tell you a lot about a person. Do they chew loudly? Do they sing in the car? Are they good with directions? So many questions to be answered and assessments to be made.
“Sorry about that, I couldn’t find my purse Chapstick and I realized that my purse Chapstick was actually my bathroom Chapstick because I ran out of the original purse Chapstick. And then I went to get my nightstand Chapstick but that is now my desk Chapstick.”

Forced proximity? Check. Office romance? Check. He falls first? Check. Road trip? Check. Age gap? Check. This was such a cute, sweet, swoony romance. I love how sweet, shy, and caring Brad was. I love that it took place around Thanksgiving. I do wish that the story was a little bit longer, but I still had a wonderful time reading about Brad and Zara. 4 stars.
– this novella can be received as a free ebook when you sign-up for Annah’s newsletter or purchased as a physical book on Amazon
– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone
– this is told from Zara & Brad’s points of view
– there is an age gap of about 8 years between them
– most of the story revolves around the fact that Zara’s parents are separating/getting a divorce and the changes that will bring for Zara’s family/their traditions
Review:
Before I got to this novella, I read only First Taste & One Last Play so I don’t think I’ve officially met Brad & Zara at all (like I may have seen them in passing in these books but I don’t remember much). But even though I didn’t know them, I quickly got to know them in this story and I quite enjoyed their romance. It was short and sweet and I liked getting to know Callum & Lottie a bit more as it goes over their shared bachelor/bachelorette party that both Zara & Brad attend. I liked the cozy feeling of the story between Brad’s want to protect/care for Zara and the season in which their story takes place (a bit before Thanksgiving to a bit after it). I’m excited to hopefully catch up with the rest of the Sweet Peach series soon and read more about MJ’s brothers in the But He’s a Carter Brother series 😍.
Summary:
Zara is a hopeless romantic trying hard not to crush on her older coworker Brad by thinking of all the reasons why she can’t like him or he couldn’t like her. But with each look he gives her and each moment they work together, Zara finds it hard to stand by those reasons. Though when everything she thought she knew about what a loving relationship looked like is torn down by her parents unexpectedly deciding to separate, Zara isn’t so sure she can trust that she still wants the kind of love she thought they had. Even when Brad is extra caring and attentive towards her while she goes though this major life change…
Brad has been slowly falling for his younger coworker Zara since they began working together, but wasn’t sure if she would be open to him pursuing a relationship like that with her. When the opportunity to stand by Zara and care for her arises, Brad is happy to show her just what she means to him while his words take their time to come out to tell her of his feelings. Even when it means offering to join her on a road trip to see her family and help them clean out her childhood home during the holiday…
This is my third book by this author and I love her writing style. Super adorable scenes that are not over the top ridiculous. I love all her characters and their personalities. And Brad and Zara were no exception. Workplace romance with an age gap. This book has Christmas vibes running through out and it makes me want to cuddle and watch a classic Christmas movie with my SO. This is a low angst novella with the sweetest scenes, great personality characters, and a great slower build of the romance for how short the book is. I think it’s bc they developed their friendship in the previous books. I also appreciate reading about the effects of a trial on an adult that you mostly see in teen books.
SPOILERS and book notes: I totally love this quote and 100% agree: “There’s something about a good love story that turns me into a happy puddle. Can puddles be happy? I’m going to go with yes.” Ooo I like this. Mutual friends, 8year age gap, boss employee… also that brad dressing like a middle schooler is hilarious. And Zara with her bright blue hair, sassy attitude and intelligence. “I’m struggling to climb out of the friend abyss she has thrown me into. I say abyss instead of zone because an abyss is much more difficult to get out of.” I like that this book is about an adult going through her parents divorce. It would still be devastating and you would still grieve. Also I love this authors writing. I feel like this romance, though a novella is progressing at a good pace. I’m so happy I’m not the only one ocd about my multiple chapsticks: “Sorry about that, I couldn’t find my purse Chapstick and I realized that my purse Chapstick was actually my bathroom Chapstick because I ran out of the original purse Chapstick. And then I went to get my nightstand Chapstick but that is now my desk Chapstick.” I like that winter is their favorite season. They live in the south and when I lived in MS I would say that winter was my favorite too! It’s Zara’s favorite bc it is the coziest. I would have to agree!! I love the Charleston colored houses by the beach. The “grand gesture” of blankets, a Christmas movie and twinkling lights is literally the dream.
Here’s my question. Why do authors think they should do a male POV. Almost every single rom com I’ve ever read with a male point of view makes me cringe and this was was no better. I didn’t mind Zara’s point of view because it sounded like a girl….I minded Brad’s because he also sounded like a girl. Honestly if you’d taken that out, it would have been 100% better. I also thought Zara was being really immature about her parents splitting up-for example, missing a bridal shower where the bride has paid for an all day spa day? That’s so much expense gone to waste and so “woah is me” attitude. Now I understand that it would be a sad and horrible thing however I think it would be pretty rude to your friend to totally disregard her because you want to sit in your room and cry? Just a really immature attitude. Im not sure why Brad was attracted to Zara either, other than her looks. That is what he mostly talked about. These characters didn’t truly look fleshed out. There’s more that I could say but I’ll leave it there for now.
NOW if all you wanted from this book was some feel good and easy banter, a supportive AF book boy, some cutesy little scenes and a lot of UNNECESSARY awkwardness this is a good one for you. I know I’m not reading anything else from this author for a while. She needs to sharpen her skills. Her base is fine, but keep writing and become better.
This is part of the Sweet Peach Series. Zara & Brad are first introduced in The Love Audit but you won't feel lost if you don't read it as this is a standalone. But, I'll still encourage you to read the rest of the books in the series to see more of them & the other characters. The synopsis is straightforward. It's a good & short sweet office age gap dual pov romance.
Because of their age gap & him being her superior, Zara doesn't think that Brad could be interested in her. But, when he begins to show more care towards her, she finds it difficult to think otherwise & entertains the idea of something more than friendship. Like Zara, Brad is careful to keep his crush a secret because of their age gap & working situation. As Zara starts to show an interest & need comfort from a friend, he cannot stop himself from showing her he will be there for her.
The pacing of their relationship shifting from friends to lovers was done well though you may be left wishing it was a longer novel. Their romance is sweet & clean. There wasn't any conflict for their relationship so it's a very easy & enjoyable read.
This sweet novella is a perfect pick-me-up for a busy day! You get all the sweetness and swoon with none of the angst in this quick read. Brad and Zara are co-workers with a bit of an age gap, and they end up taking a little road trip together too.
Things I Loved: -“Mutual desire” -Band-aid -“What is wrong with me?” x’s 2 -Chapsticks -Christmas movie
It was so fun seeing more of Callum and Charlotte too, though if you haven’t read the previous books in the series you can definitely still enjoy this little story. I have enjoyed all the books in this series so far and can’t wait for The First Taste to release next month!
⭐️⭐️💫 A solid 2.5 stars. I will admit, this is the only part of the series I’ve read, but it just wasn’t well developed and needed some more refining. At some points in the novella, the age gap is 8 years, in others, it’s 9, but it wasn’t really until 30% in that we actually find out the ages of the characters. Also, right at the beginning of chapter 17, the sister-in-law is named Sarabeth and only a couple sentences later (on the same page) she is named Annabeth. A reworking and some editing would make this story much improved.
This is a solid novella. I got this for free so i thought id give it a try, i read it as a standalone since you can do that but i think i didn’t really get into the story and at times i really cringed and was overwhelmed with some second hand embarrassment. I’ve decided to rate everything a bit harsher this year and not give everything 4 Stars. With the 2.75 I just want to show that i didn’t really enjoy ut but it was still a solid novella i just don’t have any strong feelings, positive or negative, about it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This novella is low angst and will warm your heart! It’s a very quick read (wish it was longer), which helps you love Brad & Zara even more than you already did from the first two books. I enjoyed getting their POV from the events that also happened in Grace and Wyatt’s book, “One More Song”. It added more to the overall story of the series. Brad and Zara are the definition of a sweet wholesome romance 💕
There is no cursing. It is a closed-door romcom with some kisses. Content warning: divorce
A sweet novella about Zara and Brad are colleagues who both work in the IT department of a bank. Zara has an unexpected emotional situation develop in her family and has to go home. Brad offers to go with her and their relationship moves to a closer level, more than colleagues. Both characters are relatable and likeable. Brad is a cinnamon hero, so sweet and caring. It is a clean romance with a believable storyline and it evokes a feel good reaction.
I don’t always love novellas because they aren’t long enough to tell a full love story and so they feel rushed, but this one was so cute and still had a good emotional depth to the characters. Since it was characters I already had seen in other books, there was less introduction and the story was just focused on Brad and Zara moving from friends/coworkers to dating. They had great banter and I loved getting this bonus story.
brad and zara is totally cute. it gave us a little of office romance, age gap, friends to lovers kinda of story. love the mention of charlotte and callum, and the little snippets we got of them. i think brad and zara story could totally be bigger and better developed like the others. also where is jj story?! i’m totally curious
⭐️⭐️⭐️: I was super excited for Brad and Zara's story - workplace romance?! Absolutely. I really liked the plot, and seeing how attentive Brad was for Zara whilst she was going through so much... HOWEVER, this fell just a little short for me, the writing felt more juvenile than the preceding books in the series, which sort of ruined the whole vibe for me.
Plot: Zara‘s mom brings the news on her that she is divorcing her dad. Shortly after, she tells her that she is going to be selling her childhood home and needs help. When Zara‘s coworker Brad offers to help her out and make her holiday more bearable, she takes them up on it. How will all of this alone time affect their working relationship? is their age gap going to be an issue for them? Are they going to leave more hurt than they arrive in the beginning?
What I liked: I liked that Brad was respectful of Zara, especially because of their age gap. I also liked that people didn’t make a big deal about their difference in age, even though it wasn’t that big
What I didn’t like: I did not like Zara’s mom. She was so bad.
Swearing: none
Physical intimacy level: close door
Star rating: three star stars
Trope: forced proximity, workplace romance, friends to lovers, small town romance
This is a cute little novella from the sweet peach series of two of the side characters and I loved it so much! I loved getting to know these characters more and it makes me even more excited for the next book to come out next month!! I’m loving this series thus far!
Super cute novella!! It was fun to watch Brad and Zara get their own happily ever after, especially since they were pretty active characters in the other two books in the series! Short and sweet, easy read with a simple, straightforward storyline. Loved it!
Short and sweet. I have really enjoyed the rest of this series and have had this novella for a while so it was good to complete the series and get Brad and Zara’s story. They are a goofy, quirky pair.
