عنوان کتاب اگر کمی متواضعانه‌تر انتخاب می‌شد به واقعیت نزدیک‌تر بود. کتاب تمرکزش رو فلسفه‌ی تحلیلی هست. شاید بشه گفت کل کتاب حاشیه‌هایی هست روی آرای برتراند راسل و ویتگنشتاین، جز یک مصاحبه که در مورد آثار هیدگر هست. باید اعتراف کرد که فلسفه‌ی تحلیلی برای غیراهلش جذاب نیست. البته فلسفه داعیه‌ی جذابیت هم نداره. اما برای منی که شاید دوست داشته باشم آماتوری دنبالش کنم فراتر از توان و بنیه‌م هست. مصاحبه‌ی آیزایا برلین رو پیشونی کتاب عالی بود. در مورد فصاحت کلام برلین شنیده بودم، حالا که شمه‌ای مزه کردم می‌بینم ستایش‌ها بی‌مورد نبوده. خاصه که ترجمه‌ی فولادوند هم خیلی شسته رفته و دلبر بود. اگه مثل من متخصص فلسفه نیستید و گاهی «هوس» خوندن فلسفه پیدا می‌کنید و این کتاب دم دست‌تون بود نیم ساعت وقت بذارید و مصاحبه‌ی اول کتاب رو بخونید. همین

کتاب به چهار مکتب فلسفی بزرگ که در قرن بیستم بر فضای فکری جهان حاکم بودند می پردازد:
١. مارکسیسم
٢. اگزیستانسیالیسم
٣. پوزیتیویسم
٤. فلسفه تحلیل زبانی
و از این میان، به خاطر شیوع بیشتر فلسفه ی تحلیل زبانی در انگلستان، یا به خاطر علاقه ی شخصی خود برایان مگی، به این فلسفه بیش از فلسفه های دیگر توجه شده، و در حالی که هر یک از سه فلسفه ی دیگر تنها ضمن یک فصل توضیح داده شده اند، زبان و فلسفه تحلیل زبانی و مسائل مرتبط به آن، چهار یا پنج فصل کتاب را به خود اختصاص داده است، و در فصل های دیگر کتاب هم به کرّات به آن رجوع می شود.

هر چند، این موجب نهایت رضایت من بود، چون با سه فلسفه ی دیگر کمابیش از قبل آشنایی داشتم، ولی از فلسفه ی تحلیل زبانی اطلاعات بسیار ناقصی داشتم و شدیداً به دنبال کتاب مناسبی برای تکمیل این اطلاعات بودم، و این کتاب از این جهت برای من بسیار بسیار سودمند بود.

معتقدم که این‌جور کتاب‌های «معرفی» چندان دانشی به آدم اضافه نمی‌کنه. آدم انقدر اطلاعات پیدا نمی‌کنه که بتونه درباره‌ی هیچ‌کدام از موضوع‌های مورد بحث حرف بزنه. با‌این‌حال، خوندن این کتاب‌ها مفیده، از این جهت که نورون‌های مغز را آماده‌ی دریافت اطلاعات می‌کنه (هاه! چقدر باکلاس گفتم!) بنابراین، اگر این کتاب مقدمه‌ی خوندن کتاب‌های دیگه باشه، حتماً مفیده.
درباره‌ی ویتگنشتاین و فلسفه‌ی تحلیلی هم یه چیزهایی حالیم شد.

Philosophy can be engaging. Really. Bryan Magee, an accomplished professor of philosophy, hosted a BBC Show where he interviewed 15 of the world's leading philosophers. This collection of transcripts is readable and yet, not cursory. Magee has personality and hints of humor, and his deep knowledge allows him to ask thoughtful, probing questions to guide the discussions. Many of these talks have a very nice flow.

Men like Isiah Berlin, Herbert Marcuse and Noah Chomsky are interviewed on topics like the value of philosophy, political philosophy, and human predisposition for language. There are some wonderful segments, such as Magee and eminent philosopher Alan Dworkin, author of the influential Taking Rights Seriously, discussing John Rawls' landmark Theory of Justice versus Robert Nozick's singular Anarchy, State, and Utopia. I've read both books and this session was a real treat.

The BBC interviews and end notes are chock full of additional reading suggestions, making Men of Ideas an ideal starting point for anyone interested in philosophy. I strongly recommend this title to the layman.

کتاب مجموعه مصاحبه های براین مگی با فلاسفه در دهه 70 میلادی در مورد فلاسفه مهم قرن بیستم و جریان های فلسفی مهم در این قرن است. به نظر می رسد پیش شرط خواندن کتاب برای خواننده غیرحرفه ای، دانشی در مورد کل فلسفه غرب به ویژه فلسفه بعد از دوران روشنگری (بعد از دکارت) است. مطالعه کتاب دیگر بریان مگی که آن هم به شیوایی این کتاب از فولادوند ترجمه شده-کتاب "فلاسفه بزرگ"- قبل از خواندن این کتاب لازم است.
ویژگی کتاب بیشتر در بررسی فلسفه جهان انگلیسی زبان است (فلسفه تحلیلی) تا فلسفه قاره ای، هر چند در مورد اگزیستانسیالیسم هایدگر و ارتباط فلسفه قاره ای و تحلیلی دو مصاحبه وجود دارد. با این که در مصاحبه های این کتاب روی فلسفه های مهمی مثل مارکسیسم یا اگزیستانسیالیسم به اندازه فلسفه تحلیلی تاکید و موشکافی نمی شود، اما در مورد این جریان ها نیز مختصر و مفید (هر چند ناکافی) بحث می شود.
در کل این کتاب به همراه کتاب "فلاسفه بزرگ" دو کتابی هستند که برای حتی آشنایی خواننده عادی با فلسفه می توانند بسیار مفید باشندو مصاحبه اول این کتاب با آیزایا برلین در اهمیت و اساسا موضوع و تعریف "فلسفه" موید این نکته است.

کتاب خوب و ساده ای بود. ولی اگر به جای شانزده فیلسوف به پنج یا ششفیلسوف پرداخته بود و البته کامل تر، به نظرم بهتر میبود

The name of the book varies from the name of the TV series, Men of Ideas, from which the book is adapted. These TV interviews were produced in 1978, nine years earlier than Magee’s other series, The Great Philosophers. In this series Bryan Magee interviews fifteen contemporary philosophers on topics mostly in the Anglo-American tradition. Four of the philosophers appear in both series, and it is interesting to see the differences between their older and younger selves.

As with the previous Bryan Magee series, I watched the interviews as YouTube clips instead of reading the book, although I may go find the book to fill in two missing interviews. The episodes with Charles Taylor on Marx and with R.M. Hare on Moral Philosophy had been removed.

Kirkus Reviews opines, “the pieces with R. M. Hare (Oxford) on moral philosophy and Ronald Dworkin (Cambridge) on political philosophy overlap excessively and merely restate analytic techniques discussed elsewhere…. The Taylor ""dialogue"" is a disaster, with Magee adopting a thoroughly antagonistic stance that prevents anything interesting from being said.” If this is the case, I can understand why someone might have wanted to delete those interviews. If I can get ahold of the book, I may be able to judge for myself.

The rest of the interviews were uneven in quality. Some were boring and unfocused, while others were excellent. I especially liked the interviews with William Barrett, W.V.O. Quine, Noam Chomsky and Hillary Putnam, each of whom is brilliant. Each one rose to the challenge of putting complicated subject matter into simple, introductory statements.

The interview with Iris Murdoch was also interesting in order to hear her views comparing philosophy with fiction writing. Almost every interview contained insights which are quotable. I want to obtain the book, and I will probably listen again to selected clips on YouTube.

برای هر کسی که حتی نوشته‌ای ابتدایی درباره‌ی موضوعات و اشخاص مورد بحث مگی با بزرگان طرف گفت‌وگو خوانده است، کتاب آموختنی‌های زیادی ندارد. شاید بتوان از قرارگرفتن در حال-و-هوای فلسفه گفت و لذت مشارکت در گفت‌وشنید با امثال برلین، کواین، ایر، سرل، چامسکی و غیرهم. البته این لذت، به قدر کافی وسوسه‌برانگیز است

نهایتا کتاب در سیطره‌ی فلسفه‌ی تحلیلی و به طور خاص دغدغه‌ی زبان است. به خاطر نکته‌ی پیش‌گفته ضمنا نباید تصور شود با قسمی تاریخ فلسفه طرف‌ایم؛ برای ما، در «پیرامون» حیات فکری جهان، کتاب‌های مگی می‌توانند قدری با بافت اجتماعی فلسفه‌ی رایج آشناترمان کند و ارتباط را قدری زنده‌تر

I read this because I happened to see some of the actual interviews on youtube and they absolutely wowed me. My favorite interviews in this book are Berlin (general overview), Taylor (discussion on Marxism), Barrett (Heidegger's philosophy), Quine (his defence of nondualism) and Dworkin (political theory). These are excellent, brilliant, intellectual discussions that I learned a lot from. And Magee is superb at taking a moment every now and then to distil and explain things.

The Wittgenstein fans, logical positivists, and language philosopher types seem to come with a lot of intellectual masturbation. There are some good points about empiricism here (in Ayer I believe), and a lot of science gets done without heeding these principles, but I'm not sure they apply to philosophy which at some point is by its very nature untestable. For example, Heidegger is descriptive and the logical positivists dislike him for that.

The poorest of the interviewees were probably Murdoch, Gellner and Chomsky. Murdoch seems to be full of arbitrary or at least unexplained opinions, ie. very pompous. Ironically, for all she says about philosophy vs literature, I found the only book of hers I've read, I believe it was Under the Net, artificial and trying too hard to be a good novel. Gellner is obscure and dense for no particular reason. Chomsky seems to have this personality of downplayed arrogance (unless, as youtube interviews show, he's talking to obvious underlings where he revels in being a genius), does not seem to be very good at philosophy, confuses opinion and fact, and does not understand that his own theory of universal grammar is pretty much untestable.

Anyway, I gotta reread and make some notes at some point in life, which I might never do, but this is that kind of book that makes you at least think of doing that.

کتاب مردان اندیشه شاید به نظر همه کتابی خوب برای فهم و آشنایی مقدماتی با اندیشه ها و فلسفه های نسبتا معاصر باشد. که البته از انصاف به دور است که اینگونه فرض نکنیم، ولی بارزترین مشخصه این کتاب علاوه بر معرفی فسلفه و فیلسوفان متاثر معاصر (غالبا فلسفه غالب در بریتانیا مورد بحث کتاب است)روش شناسی ورود به موضوع فلسفه را مطرح می کند، در دیدگاه های مختلف. این بعد از کتاب بسیار مفیدتر از سایر ابعاد آن می باشد، زیرا نوع تفکر و روش ورود به فلسفه و فکر را در خواننده پخته تر می سازد. بسیاری از تحولات فکری خود را مدیون این کتاب هستم و به هر خواننده ای که به دنبال پیروی بورژوای یک مکتب نیست پیشنهاد می کنم تا این کتاب را حتما بخواند.

البته می توان عیب های کوچکی بر کتاب گرفت، که شاید مهم ترین آنها محدود بودن به فلسفه موثر در بریتانیا و همچنین دید گاها مغرضانه و متعصبانه مگی در بعضی مباحث فلسفی خاص است که بحث رابه مسیر مورد نظر او می کشاند.

لازم به ذکر است که ترجمه آقای فولادوند هم در کمال پختگی است و به فهم دقیقتر و آسانتر موضوع بسیار کمک می کند.

در ابتدا بر این باور بودم که صرفا مستند و مصاحبات آقای مگی با فلاسفه از جنبه بصری کفایت می کرد،اما بعد از خواندن این کتاب مقالات ملحق بسیاری رو هم دیدم.دوستانی که مثل من فکر می کردند حتما کتاب رو بخونند و به مستند بسنده نکنند.

认真地从头到尾读完，从各个方面更多了解了哲学是什么，哲学地思考问题是什么意思。访谈中的很多哲学大家反而表述是非常晓畅的，但有些章节就看得特别费力了，比如，positivism反复看都没理解是什么意思。Magee对马克思哲学有很深的厌恶吗，感觉在许多个访谈里都好像在引导对谈的哲学家各个角度批判Marxism，觉得挺有意思的。这书毕竟有年代感了，里面提到a random person的时候都是用he/him，似乎只有男性才会被期待看这本书。

This book was similar to another book I read called "What Philosophers Think" that features and interview type format. Though this book far surpassed the other in both content and presentation I just can't believe I picked up yet another book in this blasted style. I hate the interview format apparently so its my own fault for picking this up, but just because I don't like this style does not mean another reader could not enjoy this book. It's just not for me.

سرگذشت فلسفه ي برايان مگي، اولين كتاب درست حسابي بود كه درباره ي فلسفه خوندم، و هنوزم فكر ميكنم يكي از بهترين كتابايي بود كه خوندم و ازش ياد گرفتم. مردان انديشه رو ميشه ادامه ي فلاسفه ي بزرگ دونست. به همون شيوه برايان مگي درباره ي فيلسوف ها و فلسفه شون با استادها و كارشناسان مربوط، مصاحبه ميكنه، اما فرقش اينه كه چون توي مردان انديشه با فلسفه ي معاصر سروكار داريم، برايان مگي اغلب مستقيم با خود فيلسوفاني مثل ماركوزه، كوآين، چومسكي و جان سرل صحبت ميكنه كه به نظر من خيلي جذابه. اغلب كتاب به فلسفه ي تحليل زبان مربوطه كه خب من بدم نميومد چون ياد گرفتم كلي ازش، اما كاش به مباحث ديگه اي مثل فلسفه ذهن هم پرداخته شده بود.

مصاحبه انجام شده در تلویزیون با شانزده صاحب نظر در مباحث فلسفی متفاوت و متنوع که برخی از اونها فیلسوف های برتری هستند که نام و آوازه ای جهانی دارند. خیلی خوب مباحث فلسفی ساده سازی شده و به زبانی بیان شده که تقریبا برای اکثر افراد قابل درک و فهم باشه. در کل کتاب خوبی بود. کسی هم بخواد میتونه در اینترنت فیلم های این مصاحبه ها رو نگاه کنه و که ۹ تا از این مصاحبه ها هم به زبان فارسی دوبله شدند.

برایان مگی در این کتاب درباره‌ی مکاتب فلسفی با بزرگان ومتخصصان همان موضوع به گفت‌وگو نشسته و نتیجه کتابی شده خواندنی، و بسیار مفید و راهگشا برای کسانی که فلسفه خواندن را تازه شروع کرده‌اند!

کتاب جالبی بود که آقای جذبی آن را پیش‌نهاد کرد. از مهم‌ترین نکته‌های کتاب این بود که انگار یک غرب معیاری وجود دارد که برایان مگی هر بار در قالب آن غرب با مهمانش وارد گفت‌وگو می‌شد و انگار نه انگار در برنامه قبلی حرف‌هایی دیگر زده است. وجود این غرب من را متعجب می‌کند چرا که ما در واقع با کثرت روبه‌رو هستیم. منشا این وحدت برای من پرسش‌برانگیز است.

I like the way Magee introducing philosophy via dialogue with philosophers. It contains dialogue with 15 philosophers from US, France, Britain, and Germany. The philosphers give their personal explanation on the subject matter that seems to ordinary people seem so complex and pedantic (or it's so because of over scrutinize? hehehe). One of good book that makes philosophy become easier for common folks.

btw, i only have a "copy version" of the book. I "bought" the book from a copy center in Jalan Bukit Jarian Ciumbuleuit Bandung hehehe I think for 3rd world student who only have it for the sake of study, the term of piracy cannot be used in this case. Thx for Mr. Magee for your undeclared permition.

This outstanding collection of interviews will bring you up to date on the major currents of Philosophy (to 1977), though very light on Philosophy of Science. It is written in plain language: no baloney and no buzz-words, but straightforward, clear and to the point.

Philosophy of Science aside, this is word for word the best book on Philosophy I have read.
