I like my book hangovers hellish, not my entire existence…

We survived Invequius’s attack but now we’re trapped in Hell, surrounded by demons who’d devour us with half a chance. The only way out is through a passage called the Crucible.

The Crucible is as dangerous as it sounds, a wicked assault course designed to weed out Hell's weakest. But if the terrifying falls and lethal obstacles don’t kill us, the demons whose paths we cross will.

Not just one demon—whole armies of them. Because Hell is working with the traitors on the council, and they won’t stop until they’ve conquered Earth.

If we don’t make it back, our secret magical world won't be so secret. But with every obstacle, power roars through me like a destructive fire, and I can’t control it. Hell will either kill me or corrupt me.

I just want to go home to my tbr pile.

Fans of urban fantasy with slow burn romance will love Karina Dobrev, our reluctant, introverted heroine; Lazarus Kaine, our deadly, irresistible hero; and Keith, a magical cat with impeccably high standards. Shadow Vampire is a four book series.

Leave out the sex

Ruined the book. Nice story until half this book was sex scenes. Not an important addition to the book. Loved the 1st two. Will not buy the 4th.

Although the setting wasn’t my favorite I really enjoyed the characters relationships and getting to know them better. I’m eager to read book 4!

3.8✨ Keith is the highlight of this book, along with Aunt Jubilee and Isaiah!

I enjoyed finding out what happens on this adventure. However, I did miss the normality of the previous books - with this one no longer being set in London!

The spice made sense for the relationship development between Karina and Lazarus, if a little hard to get used to after 2 books of build up.

Why on earth was this suddenly all graphic sex scenes. It was almost like a different person wrote it. Bit boring if I'm honest. We had a lot of sex while getting out of hell. Oh. Right. Great.

I enjoyed books I and II of this series. The plot didn’t always make perfect sense, but at least it had a resemblance of logic. The worldbuilding was imaginative and the characters were interesting.

Unfortunately, in the third book, things took a turn for the worse. Although the worldbuilding was very creative, and one of my favourite characters, Keith the Cat, got a lot more screen-time in this book, there are some serious problems with the plot.

So here’s a rundown of what happens: a demon army is marching from Hell into Earth. They are ‘climbing’ from the deeper circles into the higher circles, and then onto Earth, through something called the Crucible. This Crucible is basically a series of natural obstacles like volcanoes and waterfalls, and a really scary, enchanted rickety bridge. While this is certainly creative, it doesn’t exactly make a huge amount of sense. If God (or whoever) wanted to keep the demons out of Earth, they wouldn’t give them even half a chance. The only way I could see this making sense is if the Crucible were designed for humans.

Then, to add further insult to injury, the supernaturals in Earth are guarding the entrance (obviously), and the main characters have to smoothtalk their way out. But where the bloody hell did the demon army go, then? How did they get past the Gatekeepers?

This is not the only example of inexplicable things that happen in this book. For example, one of the secondary characters just happens to be the boss of the Gatekeepers, so she lets them through. This is an incredibly convenient deus-in-the-machina. The main character’s demonic ability seems to massively grow without much explanation. Yes, she has the power of one (middle-ranked?) demon, but how is she able to burn an entire demon army to the ground? Where does all that extra power come from?

I also want to talk about the sex. It was terrible; and there were pages and pages of it. It read more like some kind of weird wish fulfilment list. There were times when I wished the characters (and the author) would stop thinking about sex, and worry more about how the plot made any sense.

Oh, and what happened to that big cat?

Overall, this could have been an epic book – because there were high stakes, tonnes of interesting world building and some great characters. A good developmental editor might have fixed some of the issues, but as it stands, this book has too many problems to recommend it.

For me this is more of a 3.75 than the 4 of the first two books, rounded up on the rating naturally.

For me, this was more of a slower pace and I found some elements a bit repetitive. I feel like their journey was a bit long winded (though who am I to judge? It's not like I've been to hell and I'm sure it's painstaking getting out of there!🤭)

I feel like our FMC loses her confidence and her sufferability went down a smidge in this one, too. Karina becomes very self-doubty at points (guessing from the possession trauma she holds) but equally I didn't enjoy that character development.

There is significantly more spice in this book -K and L finally became mates in this, and I loved this for them.

I also really enjoyed Keith's shape shifting and the fact he still acts like a house cat even when in human and but kitty forms.

Some twists I didn't expect - and I certainly was not expecting the final chapter to end how it did, so Vampire Legion will be interesting, and I'm super keen to see how things pan out!

Even though this is quite short, I struggled to get through it. This installment just felt too different in terms of characterization and the writing. The dialogue between the characters was odd to me and it didn't do anything to move the story along really. There is more but I can't quite put my finger on how to say it. I've seen a few reviews that say there is too much sex in it. I believe there are only two scenes and they happen before the 50% mark.

Another awesome book

Book three was so good it was like old friends you want to be around always. Love all the characters. I want to hug Keith. Even the friendly demons. Can't wait for more.

This is my favorite book in the series. My biggest issue with the first 2 books was there was a big lack of spice. She really made up for it in this book! The first half is pretty spicy 🥵 I want to read the last book, but I also don’t want Karina and Lazarus’ story to end!

Something for everyone.

Magical fantasy storyline, novel adventure, happiness and tragedy. Heroic leading man, naive and innocent heroine, with an interesting supporting cast.

I liked the story, I didn't mind the spice , to me it fit well into the story, and the relationship with the characters. But I'm not a fan of the ending, those kind of things are simply not my cup of tea. 🤷🏼‍♀️
