In the wake of the Civil War, Merry Sherman and her sisters were forced to accept untenable situations that left them at the mercy of wealthy men’s capricious whims. But when Merry is forcefully expelled from the estate she served, the specter of homelessness and hunger is all she can see.
When his aunt tosses a housemaid down the grand staircase of her home, the desperate girl left crumpled at the bottom tries to crawl away from the furious matron’s rage. And Tedrick Barr knows he must intervene. But how can he possibly make a difference in the girl’s life when he’s barely of an age to care for himself?
All Teddy knows is that he must get Merry away from the vindictive woman set on destroying her and the men who disgraced her. Where that journey will take them, nobody knows. Yet, faith always finds a way.
My name is Michele Pollock Dalton; and, I am an unapologetic romantic.
Although I have been writing since early childhood, I have only recently overcome my reticence about sharing the stories that I create.
Most days are spent wheeling around after a remarkable little boy that I love with all my heart. And, sometimes I put my domestic goddess skills to work, so we don't have to run around naked =)
White chocolate truffles and faith fuel my writing endeavors; and, my sincere hope is that the characters I invent resonate with folks who need a bit of inspiration to face their day
The story is part of the Proxy Brides series by various authors but will read well as a stand-alone. After reading a later written book by this author, at the end of that book, she mentioned two of the sisters—in two previous books. I’m so glad I decided to read them.
During the Civil War, wife and mother, Laurel Sherman, was angry with her husband, Captain Edgar Sherman for leaving them. She will start offering herself to soldiers for provisions and then include her young daughters. When Robin escapes the nefarious plans Laurel had for her with Mr. Oates, Mariam ‘Merry’ Sherman, not even twelve, will be sent in her place. Tedrick ‘Teddy’ Barr is sickened by the depravity of his uncle and cousins, and when he witnesses his aunt throwing Merry down the steps, and the butler discarding her outside, he knows he must sneak around a get her help.
The story will be about Mariam ‘Merry’ Sherman of Pennsylvania and Tedrick ‘Teddy’ Barr of Ohio. Both are mere children thrown into an adult world. When Merry is increasing, she will be discarded like garbage, and Teddy will rescue her, get her medical help, and come up with a plan to get her away from his relatives. Arriving in Pennsylvania and learning that her family is no longer there, he discovers that he will need to get her to her sister, Robin, in Taylors Falls. It will be a long journey, but he succeeds in his mission. He is limited on time, so unfortunately must return to his Uncle's home. What awaits him there, brings more concern for Merry, so a marriage by proxy is a way to protect her—them.
The story has the good, the bad, and the evil of people. It is heartbreaking to read and try to grasp that a mother would prostitute her young daughters for monetary gain. The good side of the story is that there are some good people in the world, like Teddy, who rescues, protects, and loves Merry. Seeing how they handle the trials of the present, and where their future takes them makes the journey better in the end.
Tedrick/Teddy- almost 16 sees his uncle a cousins mis use a maid, he set to make it right. Mariam/Merry- sold to a wealthy guy ( by her mother in her missing sister's place) she was only 12 used by him and his sons when wife found out threw her down the stairs and had the butler throw her out to die. This engaging story has lot of hardship of a young girl that unfortunately true to that time era. Their story has a loving and lovely hea that felt complete. KU
Although the subject matter is difficult, I recommend this book. The subjugation of women is still a touchy issue but is handled honestly and the characters are so well written. Deserves more than five stars!
