I love sharing this in story time because it is so silly. The older children are nearly bursting to share the obvious solution as the book moves along. Here's the deal. The cast of characters is a city boy and a cow. The props are a pail and a wooden stool. (All presented in true theater fashion on the first page spread.) The boy tries all sorts of ploys to get milk but every time the result is BUT NO MILK! Eventually by serendipity the boy brings about the happy appearance of MILK!
Follow this up with the "Making Butter Boogie". Or just pretend to do this. We waved imaginary jars with cream to these verses: Shake it up; Shake it down; Shake it, shake it all around. Shake it high; Shake it low; Shake it, shake it to and fro. Shake it over; Shake it under; Shake it, shake it -- now it's butter!
This is a fun book for students to see all the different ideas a boy has for trying to get milk out of a cow. It is a fun book you can read to students when you are learning about cows for a lesson. k-2.
A fun story of how a boy tries to convince the cow to give milk. Nothing works! The illustrations are very colorful and accurate. I would recommend this book for any age in an elementary school.
