Pauline Rowson is the author of thirty- one crime novels - nineteen featuring DI Andy Horton in the Solent Murder Mystery series; five in Art Marvik mystery thrillers series, six in the 1950s set historical mysteries with Scotland Yard's Inspector Ryga, who is sent out to solve baffling coastal crimes and two standalone thrillers. All her crime novels are set against the backdrop of the ever changing sea.
While the book was well-written and the main characters were interesting and engaging, overall the story was disappointing. The plot suffered from being too complex and scattered, so there were many minor characters, most of whom we barely met, lots of journeys which slowed the pace, and relatively few moments of real drama and tension. The ending was also a letdown as I felt some of the key characters were sidelined at the end.
Having read all 16 of the Solent mystery series, I thought I would try a new series by the very clever Ms Rowson. It kept me guessing all the way through and her knowledge of the area shows a lot of time for research must have been taken. I did get slightly confused with who were the good guys and who were the bad but never mind. It all became clear at the end. Have already started book 2.
I love her books I’ve read so far but this just seemed to come together more slowly than normal. Also seemed as though the shopping list of players was more than a cart full. Thus, by the time I got to the end of the book I was working hard to see if everything on my shopping list for her normal storyline was in the basket. Not to worry, I’ve still got some of her books to satiate my late night reading. VR, Mags
Not a bad narrative, lots of motor-boating between various mariners from Poole, UK to Southampton, Portsmouth and points east. Interesting histoically.. I was brought up in Lymington, Hampshire, which has a major world-class yacht mariner, yet Even being around there for 20 years of my young life I was never aware of the truly incredible quantity of boating mariners in southern England. The 100+kms from Poole, Dorset to Littlehampton, Sussex has 100s of mariners and many people on those coastal areas even do their shopping by motor boat! The Solent is an area that seems to have escaped mention in thousands of historical narratives all tthe way from King Henry VIIIth to early 20th century, so almost no-one knows that THAT was THE PRIMARY area of shipbuilding for the British Navy in times of QE Ist ! The shipbuilding in that area is literally the saviour of Great Britain and the reason that it is here today! So add THAT to your weed and smoke it..
I enjoyed this. It was fast paced and I didn't guess the perpetrator. There are quite a few twists and turns and thankfully Art manager to get rid of the extremely annoying woman before she scuppered the investigation completely. I will certainly read the next one.
Very convoluted and overly complicated, lots of minor characters thrown in, that did not add to the plot. Familiar with the area, but not always clear of where parts of the action were taking place. Will give the 2nd in the series a go and hoping that as I am now familiar with some of the characters, that they will be developed.
A gripping story set in a beautiful part of the UK. Art Marvik is a memorable character, who was a serviceman and becomes involved in uncovering a cover up. Artificial Intelligence, scientific research, dumping of radioactive waste and a man wrongly accused of murder. Very exciting.
This was an enjoyable detective-type mystery novel with a well-paced storyline and believable characters. No spoilers here although there is something of a twist at the ending involving the chief protagonist's suspicions about the police. All this made for some good reading.
The plot was very complex, making the reader pay close attention to the numerous characters and events that unfold before the conclusion in solving the crimes committed.
This is my introduction to a new series. I do like the main character and his friends. This one involves getting information on who and what organization is behind a series of deaths. It seems high-powered and filled with action.
An interesting character and a story set in a region I know so well, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Looking forward to reading the rest of this series about Art Marvik. Julian Tremayne, Pocklington, East Yorkshire
