Le 9 mai 1950, Robert Schuman propose la création de la Communauté européenne du charbon et de l’acier, jetant ainsi les bases de la construction européenne. Mais les obstacles sont nombreux, en particulier les tentations de repli nationaliste. Ainsi, en décembre 1978, Jacques Chirac, Premier ministre, lance l’« Appel de Cochin » dans lequel il affirme sa défiance à l’égard des institutions européennes. Mais le débat n’est pas récent : en 1932, Stefan Zweig démontrait comment la lutte entre nationalisme et supranationalisme rythmait l’histoire de la civilisation européenne depuis l’Antiquité.

Jacques Chirac is a lifelong French politician and one of the most charismatic figures of twentieth century politics. He was president of France from 1995 to 2007. He also served as Prime Minister of France twice in the 1970s and 1980s, and as Mayor of Paris from 1977 to 1995. He is best known for being one of the most prominent international opponents of the Bush administration's intention to go to war in Iraq. He also worked to abate nuclear armament, banning the further continuation of nuclear tests in France.

Very relevant book, especially right now. Among the three speeches the last one (by Stefan Zweig) was my favourite one.
