I loved this novella! The story was well written and easily understood. The author painted some great images like:

At the doorway was a tall hunk of masculinity made of football player and boy-next-door. ~Mmm. Yummyness right?

They often made me smile and laugh.

Both Michael and Liam sounded hot as Hell and knew EXACTLY how to please a woman. The emotions were truly palpable. I totally felt Shannon's despair and determination. Evie's antics were a great source of amusement for me and the ever stoic Wilson put a grin on my face. He made me think of the Palace Guard in England.

The Devil To Pay is an absolutely wonderful read. It is paranormal romance at it's best. It has angels and demons as well as shades. To top it all off it has a magnificent HEA with a small surprising twist. This reviewer can't help but to give it two thumbs up!

Favorite lines

"Did my necklace bite you?"

"We shouldn't be doing this."
"Why? Are you afraid I'll ruin you for men?"

*contains a small F/F scene with slight voyeurism

Everyone has those days where nothing seems to go right. The ones where the world seems against you and nothing but a good stiff drink....or five, will take away the edge. When having one of these days have you ever thought “Come. On! I would sell my soul for some good luck”? Well Shannon throws the offer out there and both heaven and hell come to claim her soul......Not so good right?

Let me tell you – if I knew sexy ass Michael and Liam were going to be on the receiving end of my soul, I may just verbalise those words myself. I found myself see-sawing between the two heroes. Michael and Liam were equally yummy and drool worthy, making the sex scenes ohhh, sooo enjoyable. There was also a teeny, tiny bit of girl on girl action.

Maria Zannini jam packed interesting characters, steamy sex scenes and a well described world, all into a short story.

I really enjoyed The Devil To Pay and will be definitely reading more from this author.

This cute little paranormal romance novella is the first in Zannini's new Second Chances series. An oath made in desperation to whomever would listen, soul harvesters, an imp, a shade, a Tribunal and interesting twist to Heaven and Hell make this a delightful prequel to what could be a great series.

Shannon, former archeology professor and current owner of a failing antique store, is up to her eyeballs in debt. She is desperate, depressed and drinking, never a good combination, when she blurts out the words that change her life.

The next morning, Liam, a nice bit of eye candy in 19th century garb, strolls into her store just as she is about to commit arson and insurance fraud. He is a soul harvester and he hates his job. That night he steals into her bedroom while she is sleeping, climbs into bed with her and holds her while she sleeps. He's sad, thinking she really is a good girl, to have to take her soul. He finds an excuse to wait to take it. He asks her out for dinner the next night.

Michael, Liam's brother and yummy looking himself, plays for the other team. He tells Shannon he rescues lost souls when he takes her out to lunch the day after she meets Liam. He does it by being a soul harvester. He takes Shannon to lunch and then to meet a friend of his. He finds he is extremely attracted to who Shannon is and is having a hard time making himself take her soul.

Both men try to protect her from the Tribunal enforcers who come to do the job neither brother could bring himself to do. Liam is apprehended. When Shannon learns that both men care too much for her to take her soul and Liam is hauled before the council to be punished for it, she turns to Michael for seemingly the only solution in an attempt to save Liam.

The chemistry between the characters is very hot. Although I rate this a Steamy story (2.5 of 4 on the sensual scale), there is a short, very sexy massage (F/F) scene that quickly morphs into a M/F scene.

I look forward to seeing where Zannini takes this series. I think paranormal romance and urban fantasy fans will enjoy this quick read.

Ever have one of those days when everything goes wrong and you’d give anything to change it?

You might want to learn from Shannon McKee’s despair that sometimes getting what you wish for isn’t always a good things, or is it?

Shannon’s life is a mess. She’s deep in debt and in a drunken plea declares she’d sell her soul to get out from under her troubles. The next morning just as Shannon attempts the unthinkable, a handsome stranger walks into her antique shop. The stranger, Liam Chase, gives Shannon a jeweled scarab he wants her to identify.

Briefly forgetting her troubles, Shannon begins to study the artifact. Soon a second charming stranger enters her shop. Introducing himself as Michael, he offers to help Shannon with her research.

Shannon finds herself mysteriously drawn to both strangers. Little does she know, both men have been sent from different sources for her in answer to her plea.

As the story unfolds, Shannon realizes what her plea will cost her in the end.

Author Maria Zannini has created characters that you will adore and has intertwined them into a fantasy world that will make you believe. The story is a mixture of suspense, humor, fantasy, and romance with a healthy dose of faith and hope. There are several explicit sexual interludes. However, these hot and steamy scenes are tastefully written and add another layer to this intriguing plot.

Is Shannon’s plea her damnation or salvation, will she cause Liam and Michael to lose what they hold most dear or help them find a love they never imaged, and is Evie a foe or a much-needed friend? The answers will surprise you.

THE DEVIL TO PAY is the first installment in the Second Chances series. Once you meet these eclectic characters, you’ll be hooked for more. It’s a fast, sexy read that will captivate your attention from beginning to end.

FUN & WICKEDLY HOT!

Wow, this was a great short and sizzling hot read. The characters were very entertaining, funny, sexy, and had me falling in love with them all. The erotic scenes involved M-F but had a great teasing F-M-F (Menage) temptation. I totally loved the concept of the story’s Heaven and Hell's operations and look forward to reading more about this new series “Second Chances”. The Happy Ever After was sweet and left me wanting to know more about the characters and their futures.

What a nice way to start a new series! I jumped for joy when the author sent me a copy to read for an honest review!
The Devil To Pay (Second Chances) was a smoking hot read that from page one to the end kept me riveted with Shannon and Liam and Michael! Be careful what you wish for, when you least expect it someone may be listening but unfortunately for Shannon this advice comes too late!
I laughed and I cried and if this would have been a paperback book it probably would have been the first one I ever threw against a wall in frustration because it ended! I love alpha males and you get not one but two in this little novella, one from Heaven and one from Hell and I am not telling which is which because to find out you need to run-not walk and pick up a copy of this author's latest writing endeavor! I swear by the time I finished the book I not only needed a cold shower but had a hard time sleeping reliving all the adventures that Shannon found herself a part of with Liam and Michael! This was a very light sexy read that will keep you glued to your seat to see what happens to Shannon next. Not only will she surprise you but wait till you get to the interesting "reveals" that take place about some of the characters in the story.

I hate nothing more than spoilers, suffice it to say that this was a very quick and easy read and I am eager to see what comes next in the "Second Chances" series.

***
This is the first book of the Second Chances series. Forget everything you thought you knew about Heaven and Hell. You ain't seen nothin' yet."

What can I say about The Devil To Pay, well it is a novella and a quick fun read. It brings a new concept of "heaven" and "hell" and "angels" and "demons." I certainly will want to watch what I say without truly comprehending the meaning and/or consequences behind my words. It starts out with a young woman, Shannon McKee, in a state of deep despair over the turn her life has taken and her not seeing any way out . . . can you guess where it goes from there . The characters were well presented and the story well written. It was a fun romp with a few definitely sizzling sexy scenes. Although it was a quick short read, it has a very satisfactory ending that made me smile, and while it does not end in a cliffhanger - I can certainly see these wonderful characters going to more adventures that I would be happy to pick up and read.
I received this book from the author with a request for my honest review.

Generally, I shy away from Heaven and Hell type scenarios but the premise to The Devil To Pay caught me. Plus, I've enjoyed Maria Zannini's previous work.

Shannon is a simple but intelligent woman who has been taken advantage of by her ex-lover. Left high and dry, Shannon drowns her sorrows in tequila and looks for redemption in an empty bottle. What she doesn't realize is that her plea for redemption has been answered and it just may wreak more havoc.

Two men appear in Shannon's life and you guessed it... both are drop dead gorgeous but after getting burned by her ex Shannon's not exactly in the right frame of mind. The most surprising twist is trying to figure each of the men out. Who is Heaven and who is Hell. Speaking of the two "H" words, Maria Zannini offers a refreshing take on Heaven and Hell. The two are not opposites of the other they are the same. Huh? Yes, they are the same. Both have the same end goal in mind but the process in which to get there differs. I've piqued your interest, right? Good.

The story's conflict didn't arc as drastically as I would have enjoyed. A little more opposition would make for a complete read and rival the electric passion perfectly. Thus, I would say that The Devil To Pay is more for the steamy passion readers verses the action gritty readers. I have rated this one a 5 because the passion level was up there, characters were written well, and emotion was felt.

This story was a lot of fun, and wow, can that Maria write a love scene. **applauds** No unnecessary fluff, all heat. I'm taking notes.

The characters (major and secondary) were very well developed and really stuck with me. I think I liked Michael and Liam more than I did Shannon though, perhaps because I relate better to the darker ones. The only issue I had with this, hence the 4 stars and not 5, was that in parts it felt rushed to me. It didn't ruin the story at all, but I couldn't help but think it should have been a full novel. That's a personal thing though, I think. So I can't really say the author did anything "wrong" here. Just that my brain saw a larger story and wished for more of these characters.

I love how the two "sides" are portrayed here, neither side entirely good and yet, neither is entirely bad. Well done.

Do I recommend? Very much. Maria's writing has a strong, distinct voice and style. Her characters stay with you long after you "close" the book. If you like fantasy, romance, and really awesome love scenes (by the way, no two love scenes is at all the same in this story, I loved that) then you'll enjoy The Devil to Pay.

I really enjoyed reading this short story. Shannon has set herself up without even realizing it. In a moment of absolute desperation she has offered up her soul to Heaven or Hell, whoever can get there first. She doesn't mean it, of course, but both places answer the call and send out their best harvesters to take her soul. What neither Liam or Michael anticipate, is having feelings for the woman who's life they're supposed to end.

This was a great story that takes place in a very imaginative and pretty well-built world of multiple Heavens and Hells. What I loved the most was the world and the descriptive visuals that are painted to place us there. Some of the crazy places reminded me of What Dreams My Come in that everything was so vivid, yet very warped and strange (in a good way). I also really liked all the characters, and I loved that we didn't find out which place (Heaven or Hell) Liam and Michael were working for until later in the story. It kept me guessing which one was working for who constantly.

Some things I didn't like were the beginning was a bit slow, but once it picked up, I was very much hooked. I also didn't like the love triangle thing going on between Liam, Shannon, and Michael. Their relationship was kind of strange overall and I wasn't completely satisfied with how that ended up. But, it's good to hear it'll be a series so maybe we'll learn more about that later.

Overall, this was quite an entertaining little story. I loved diving into this world and I loved the balance between steamy, a bit of humor, and fantasy. The interaction and banter between the characters was charming and left me wanting more. The only thing that would have made it better would be if it had been a full-length novel. I will definitely be picking up the next in the series!

Note: I'm struggling between classifying this as Erotic Romance or not. Although it does have some quite steamy moments, it's pretty light overall, and not really the basis of the story.

This is hardcore romance--at least for me! The story moves fast (except for the "romance" bits, but I skimmed over those as I'm sure my face blushed) while Shannon tries to figure out how to get out of the mess she didn't even realize she made. She makes one bad decision after another, but her heart is always in the right place and because of that, it works out in the end. Sort of. You just have to read it yourself and see.
I liked Shannon and even though she was bounced around throughout the story, she stays strong. For a moment, I started getting confused as the settings changed in the blink of an eye, but Shannon was just as confused (and disturbed) as I was. I realized the author knew exactly what she was doing, so I could sit back and go along for the ride.

Have you ever thrown an offhand comment out that went something like “Oh, I would sell my soul for...”? Next time you'd better think twice! At the very least make sure you specify whichever entity rules whatever afterlife world you would like to enter. Because that's what Shannon forgot to do when, in a drunken moment, she pleaded for help with her soul as the bargaining chip. As a result, she had agents from both Heaven and Hell after her soul. I do have to say that if this is what the agents for both places are like, I might have had a good time sitting back and letting them fight over my soul. Because Michael and Liam are both...well, I guess “heavenly” wouldn't work in this case, would it? Okay, they are both yummy!

This was such an interesting, fun and unique take on Heaven, angels and demons that it immediately grabbed me and sucked me in. Ms. Zannini packed so much into fifty-seven pages that it seemed longer but also ended much too soon. The author's description of Heaven is both captivating and imaginative (watch for the little girl). The different types of jobs that the angels are given is an interesting concept, especially considering that Liam doesn't feel like he's suited for his job. You'd think the ones assigning jobs in Heaven could get it right, wouldn't you?

All of the main characters are dynamic and full of personality. Shannon is a likable, sweet person that had the misfortune of misjudging a man. Who hasn't done that? She got taken advantage of and now is stuck trying to figure out her life. Michael and Liam are devastatingly sexy with that old school gentlemanly charm. Even the secondary characters are fun, with little Evie, Liam's assistant, and the butler, Wilson, nearly stealing the show. The portrayal of Gabriel was a little surprising though and not what I expected.

This book is packed with so much humor, steamy hot love scenes, sexy angelic (and devilish) men and even some whimsy that I couldn't put it down. I'm very happy to see that this is to be part of a series and will be eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to revisit these characters.

This is a well written, fast paced, steamy tale that is sure to get your attention from page one. It reminded me somewhat of watching the movie “What Dreams May Come”, where it was fascinating and delightful to see that version of Heaven. This author will be going on my list to check out her other books – you should check her out too!

For those of you that know me... and those that don't this is my little statement about short books.... I do not judge short stories on the rush of their relationships, because they are just that - short stories. So, yes the relationships always could have been drawn out more, yea it seems like they fall in love to fast and of course the story could have been made longer... but it is a short story. So with that said.... here is my review...

I was given this book for an honest review and my honest thoughts, so here goes...

Omg... This is a new to me author and let me say that I will be looking for more to come from her! Ms. Zannini kept me entertained, hot and bothered and wanting my own Heaven and Hell! I have to be honest, the last tag line caught my attention and drew me in - like a fly to a light. I was all her's, from the first page... all the way till the last. It was a very short ride, but well worth it. Hell have no fury like a woman with two men who freaking rock her world!!

Now keep in mind this is a very short story... The build up is quick... But I have to say that the story line is very refreshing!

We have all been there.. a day where everything goes wrong... Nothing goes right... And if there is a chance it can get screwed up, it will. Now add in a woman struggling to keep her head above water... And on the darkest day of her life... she makes a vow she cannot keep... But once those words are out there..... "I would sell my soul for........." there is no taking them back. And that is what happen to poor Shannon.

Shannon found her self swimming in the sea of "I am way in over my head," until drop dead gorgeous, hello save my day walked into her life... But what Shannon did not know... Was what Mr. Drop Dead Gorgeous wanted from her... Or for that matter... What else lay in wait for her!

This is a roller coaster ride story and one you will likely NOT forget. I am eagerly waiting for the next one! It is a must read to find out what happens.... The story must go on!

Ms. Maria, you have found a new follower to your storytelling! You not only made me feel involved in the world you created, you also made me feel for Shannon and fall for her men! And yes ladies... I said Men!

Ms. Maria... I applaud you for an awesome story!! Truly riveting, saucy, hot, and damn straight sexy!!! Awesome job!

And a little FYI ~ Ms. Maria designed the cover!!! Isn't it gorgeous! I know right!!!

Devil To Pay, Maria Zannini
A Short Novella - Great For A Quick, Steamy Romp - Short On Depth.

Devil To Pay is the first novella in the Second chances series by author Maria Zannini.

Shannon McKee is down on her luck. Wiped out financially by a man she loved and facing bankruptcy with her antique shop because of the betrayal, Shannon prays for a way out. Unfortunately for her, both heaven and hell determine to grant her hasty request, each sending a harvester angel to collect her soul.

When Shannon falls hard under their charms, sparks fly, and the rival angels, Liam and Michael, find themselves inexplicably unable to hand Shannon over to either realm, instead becoming fugitives and vying to win Shannon's heart.

Liam sacrifices himself, enabling Michael time to save Shannon, and both he and Shannon must make choices that will have eternal consequences. For Shannon, the cost is dear. To save Liam, whom she loves, she must bond her soul in eternal servitude to his rival - and brother - Michael.

Zannini writes a steamy, erotic world of seductive angels, sultry sprites, and a woman caught between two otherworldly lovers, earning a high heat rating from this Broad. However, this is not a romance. The sex is hot, but not emotional for the most part. I would have liked to see more of why Shannon fell in love with Liam, and not simply the lust between them.

I enjoyed the set up for Zannini's insertion of angels into the storyline, thinking her premise brilliant. I was somewhat disappointed, though, that the author never fully explains why Shannon's desperate cry for help makes for such devastating consequences. (In Zannini's defense, a second novella in the series, titled Chain of Souls, is now out and may answer my questions when I read it)

Devil To Pay is easily read in a few nights leisure reading before bed or over an afternoon cup of tea - or two, and any who enjoy a lusty romp between the pages should give this novella a read. Not overly involved, Devil To Pay is great reading for an easily digested and quick escape.

Overall story - 3/5 stars
Characters - 3/5 stars
World Building - 4/5 stars
Romance Heat - 1/5 stars
Erotica heat - 4/5

I have to be honest here. The story line is there. It has the possibility to be a good series. I will read the next book. I want to see what happens. With that being said, I wanted to hit the main character, Shannon. I'm sorry but she was the most fickle person. She fell into bed with two different guys within moments of meeting each of them. Very hot sex scenes though. Lol. But seriously, who does that kind of stuff? Not to mention, she's supposedly a professor? You would think that she would be a rational person but she makes snap decisions and doesn't think about what she's doing at all. At least that's how it seems. She kinda redeems herself for me towards the end of the book. She becomes a shade to help Liam. Which is redeemable in my book. Like I said, I'm going to read the next one because I want to know what happens, the hot sex scenes, and the fact that she kinda makes up for her idiocy.

The path to hell is paved with good intentions. Shannon McKee is desperate. She’s broke, alone, and on the verge of losing it all. Pair depression and bad tequila and you have a desperate cry for help. Shannon offers up her soul just to be out of the mess she’s in. When two hunky strangers enters her life, Shannon learns to have fun, enjoy herself, and to give up the only thing that really matters; her soul.

Enjoyable characters, great plot, and passionate sex make up a great story of compromise and love. Maria Zannini did a great job capturing the emotions in this story.

I read half of this book. Not good. The heroine is suppose to be this super smart Egyptologist who is bankrupt - who sells her soul in a muttered oath while drunk.

Then a dude from hell and a dude from heaven show up to take her away. She sleeps with both of them in less than 24 hrs- and gets a breast massage from a female sprite...all while never acting like she is a smart human.

Yeah - not for me.

What can I say? If it weren't for the terrible price that must be paid, I would want to be in Shannon's shoes. Liam or Michael? Michael or Liam? Just not fair to have to choose.

And the writing? Most excellent indeed. Every word, sentence, paragraph is used well to express something or move the story forward. I can't wait for the next installment.
