Get ready for a bumpy ride. Our Strength Under the Influence is the story of a family crashing head on into the life-altering reality of addiction, told by the mother who is trying to keep it all together for her addicted adult children and her grandchildren. Annie admits that life was not easy and she wasn’t always successful in her approach to handling a given situation. But she was committed to face each challenge that came along. So buckle up for a brutal emotional roller coaster that Annie and her family were forced to ride for decades.
Powerful story about a mother's/grandmother's love for her family and desperate attempts to help her addicted daughter. Very emotional, however, neither she nor the addicts seem to ever take responsibility for their actions. They see themselves as victims of a disease or genetics and go so far as to deny they can even make a choice about their addiction. The addict is praised, however, when she chooses to go into rehab, but apparently when she drops out, it's not her choice or it's the fault of the rehab program. I give the author credit for her strength, but it seems she unwittingly became an enabler. The whole story is tragic.
