So although my patience was tested with this book when it took forever to come out, I am now happy and content with my Mirko fix.
After the cliffhanger in book 1 I was dying to read this book, and if there's 1 thing I have to give credit for to this author- she really knows how to keep her audience on edge.

This was a great addition to the series. Just like Descended by blood this story was very entertaining and completely addictive.
Definitely worth the wait! Wish there was more Jaren though and so sad about David.
Great series, can't wait for number 3.

WOW....I mean WOW!!! I feel like I've been waiting forever for this book to come out and it was totally worth the wait!!! I hope I don't have to wait as long for the next one! I'm still totally Team Mirko! Brooke has grown a lot in this book. Relationships form, solidify and change and it's a wild ride. She also CHOOSES (OMG! I know right!) in this book!! There's some crazy twists and turns in this book. Things I totally didn't expect. If you loved the first book you will love this one!

I’ve waited a very, very long time for this second installment in the Vampire Born series, and let me tell you, it was worth every minute! Kace once again grips readers in this tale of love and betrayal, gluing readers to the pages as the plot develops, twists, and turns, leaving the reader wondering just who the enemy within the ranks really is…

Mirko, Mirko, Mirko. That boy is so epically swoon worthy and I envy Brooke to the highest degree! In Descended by Blood, I couldn’t choose between Mirko or Jaren, Brooke’s two love interests, but Enemy Within sealed the deal and, like Brooke, my heart belongs to Mirko, with good reason. Any guy who is willing to risk his life for mine is a keeper, and any guy who pushes me to the side because he can’t deal with my heritage, well… he has to go. Kace does a phenomenal job fleshing out Mirko even more in this novel, giving readers more of his background while also playing up the boy rivalry and adding some steamy romance scenes (it’s still tame though). Mirko melts my heart, and I just want to reach through the pages and bring him into the real world. We could do with a few dozen men like Mirko walking the earth…

This novel also deals more so with the idea of the Pijawikas, former slaves of the vampire world, and I love how Kace brings in the themes of bigotry, racism, and hypocrisy, teaching very important lessons throughout her phenomenal story. There are many similarities to the human world and the mistakes we’ve made in our treatment of other humans, and I loved that, while a sensational storyline, it also has its teachable moments. And, of course, not all is as it seems, and not everyone should be trusted…

The cliffhanger in this novel nearly killer me, just like it did in the first, and I’m hoping and praying that we won’t have to wait another year and a half for the third book to release!

Enemy Within is the new thrilling addition to the Vampire Born trilogy from author Angeline Kace. I was lucky enough to have beta read for this novel, and let me tell you, it's been awesome to be able to watch this story grow and evolve. Kace's writing abilities just keep getting better and better. I purchased my copy as soon as it went live on Amazon!

Brooke has really shown some growth as the main character. She's accepted her new life as a half-vampire/Pijawika. In a perfect (paranormal) world, she'd get time to acclimate to said new life, revel in the new strength, discover other abilities and really get to know Mirko. BUT Brooke's reality is far from perfect. Right off the bat, Kace immerses Brooke into action. It's definitely not all fun and games. Brooke has to deal with some really terrible situations. She goes through a roller coaster of emotions as the story progresses, and she can't be sure of anything. Is her father the evil man she's always thought he was? Is she, herself, evil? I really felt for her. Brooke isn't one to shy away from her emotions. She felt them in the moment, but didn't really wallow in it. I'm tired of female male characters that just take horrible situations all in stride and never FEEL. I like a little vulnerability. There has to be a good balance, though. Too much whining and I want to gouge my eyeballs out, but Brooke's my girl. She pulled herself together and did what needed to be done.

I found the Pijawkan history and society very intriguing and frustrating. Intriguing because of the different classes of Pijawikan society. The different 'levels' all have their own lifestyles, manners/protocols, and purpose. Pijawikas are like kings. Powerful and rich. Drustvos are the servant class, and pretty much live to serve the Pijawikas. That is their one duty in life. Then there are the Zao Duhs, who are treated like garbage even though they're the ones who are called on to protect the upper class. That's where the frustrating part comes in. Mirko, who we ALL can agree does no wrong, is degraded in several scenes in Enemy Within, and it made me SO angry. I wanted to punch someone!

Speaking of Mirko, I really enjoyed getting to see his point of view. He is, of course, my favorite character in this series. Yep, I'm Team Mirko all the way. There are just so many layers to this guy, and we've only seen beneath a few. Yes, he's extremely cocky at times, but it's because he's fought tooth and nail to get to where he is. Mirko has gone through so much pain, horror and debasement as a Zao Duh. It doesn't matter that he is the best fighter and can see past schemes and stay one step ahead of his enemies. He is a Zao Duh and that means he is less. It's absolutely ridiculous! Mirko is loyal and dedicated, especially to Brooke. He even takes care of her friends even though they're human and don't listen to anything he says. Through his frustration with that he sees how much they mean to Brooke, and he honors that. We get to see beyond his arrogance in Enemy Within, and though his past has some very, very dark times, I very much enjoyed watching his character develop and deepen. That's probably my favorite thing about this book.

(I have to mention the 'love triangle' since it's in the synopsis. Let's just say that in my mind, there was no real competition, ever, and leave it at that!)

So much that happens in this book that there's pretty much no time to chill out. If there's not a fight breaking out, someone is betraying someone else, or people are fighting for their lives. We're taking in the scenery of Croatia one minute and then dancing in a club the next. There really never was a dull moment. The ending had me yelling 'ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!'. I was stunned. Now that I've had time to think about it, it was really a very good ending. You'll think you know how it's going to end, and then Angeline Kace sucker punches you in the gut.

I'm dying for book 3, and you can bet I will be nagging Angeline Kace for it every chance I get. If you haven't checked this series out, DO IT! The Vampire Born series has a completely different take on vampires, and it's one of my favorites. Take a break from whatever your 'normal' is and pick up the first book, Descended by Blood, and let Mirko take your mind off things for a while!

I received Enemy Within from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I really want to ramble and rant and rave over this review, but I’m not exactly sure how. It’s not that I didn’t love this book, because I did. It was everything that Descended by Blood was, if not more. My hesitation comes from the fact that I’m scared to death that I’m going to give something away. There were so many twists and turns. So many secrets revealed and so much that happened almost every chapter was jaw dropping.

Enemy Within starts pretty much where Descended by Blood leaves off. Brooke is in danger and they have to come up with a plan. There are a few complications that make things… well… complicated. Sorry, there’s just no better way to put it. The first obstacle that they face is Brooke’s transformation. Then there’s the whole problem of her own father being the enemy they have to fight. Things really get interesting when they all discover that things aren’t always what the seem and neither readers or the characters can figure out exactly who can and can’t be trusted. Needless to say, a lot happens in this book… a lot.

None of the characters are spared in Enemy Within. There’s betrayal, loss which leads to grief, and physical pain. I can’t even begin to risk mentioning even minor details because all of it is so interwoven it’s sure to give something away. No matter how innocent a detail may seem on the surface, it all runs deeper. You’ll just have to read it to understand.

There was so much packed into this book. Danger, romance, violence, action, mystery, heartbreak – yeah, it was all there. Tears are inevitable.. just a warning. A few times they came as a shock and there were moments that I both loved and grew angry at the same character within the same chapter. Then, once I finally felt like I could breathe a sigh of relief, tables were turned. Did I mention that authors are evil? Well, trust me, you have no idea.

Fans of Enemy Within waited patiently for Descended by Blood. Well, semi-patiently. I was one of them, and even though I’m a very patient reader I’m not so that the way things were left at the end of Enemy Within isn’t going to try that patience to its limit. Yeah, it was more than a cliff hanger and kinda cements the whole ‘Authors are Evil’ thing. The third book in Vampire Born, Forbidden to Kill, can’t come soon enough.

Well, I thought I loved the first one, but wow, this was awesome!! With the way the last book ended I had been dying for this book. I easily fell right back into the world. I thought the first book was full of surprises and action, but this one steps it up. The stakes are higher, and things are very personal. It makes for a really great journey and I was sucked right in.

Brooke has to really discover herself in this. She has to decide between two boys who both have her heart, protect herself, try to figure out who to trust, and deal with her best friends illness. She goes through a lot in this book, but she really deals with it quite well. I always liked Brooke, but she really does grow a lot in this one. She starts to think more about the people around her and what they are all risking too. She had been so caught up in her little bubble, that it was refreshing to see her realize there is so much more going on than just her issues.

Oh the boys!! Okay, so I am going to be vague here, but there was a love triangle in the first book. If you've read it you already know that, but if you haven't, rest assured that it's not a love triangle just for the sake of having one. It does make sense and I loved where it went in this. Yes, she does choose between them and I think that she did well at making the decision that was best for her. I love how protective both of them are for her, and she does care about them both, but she can only be with one.

So, I know that this is a really short review, but I want to keep this spoiler free. Just know that this was amazing and it really continued the story well. There was a lot of tension, and things get pretty tough. There are a few twists and trust is tested as well as relationships between Brooke and the others. I have a lot of love for this series and I thought this sequel was really great! I love it when I love a second book better than the first and this sure did that. I will read anything that Angeline Kace writes. She is fantastic at sucking into the story and holding you there.

First of all, thanks Angeline for the review copy!!! I felt like I had waited a lifetime for this book! I had actually started reading it and got through the first chapter, thought to myself, I have no idea of what is going on???? I had to go back and read Descended By Blood all over again! But it was sooo worth it!

The first book left us with with Brooke figuring out that her Dad basically was trying to kill her. In this book, we really get to know her father and see a little bit more of how much Brooke would like his approval. Since not having a father her whole life, she cannot help but want to have a relationship with him and get to know him.

Whether you are Team Mirko (me! me!) or Team Jaren, you will get to see a lot of them both. Mirko is as overprotective as ever and Jaren is just as sweet and loving. Brooke DOES pick whom she wants to be with, NO! I can't tell you! You will just have to read it yourself!

So much happens and you really need to pay attention. We get to meet a few new characters, Kaitlynn has a little change and Brooke is trying to learn to control whom she is and her new powers.

This book leaves us with an even BIGGER cliffhanger and now I probably would do anything to get my hands on the next book! Until then, I will be happily sleeping with dancing Mirko's in my head!

A review copy was provided for an honest review. Having read Descended by Blood, the first book in the series; I had expected an equally good sequel. What's delivered is a nice follow-up but I didn't love it as I did the first. At the heart of it all I think I built up impossible expectations. Reflecting on it I guess the story didn't go in the direction I thought it would which took me by surprise. Despite that I thought the world that's built was intriguing and greatly detailed especially with the different classes of vampires. This series distinguishes itself amongst the many vampire novels and continues to bring a refreshing story. It's imperative that you read the first book to grasp what's going on in this one. It picks up immediately after the first left off so you're instantly pulled in. I had a hard time remembering some of the details of the previous book because I read it nearly a year ago but that didn't matter much once I began. The beginning of the story is slow and it increases the pace halfway through to deliver some crazy action scenes and unexpected plot twists. The viewpoints shift between Brooke and Mirko throughout and gives interesting insight into both their thoughts. I would have preferred if Brooke's viewpoint alone was shone because Mirko's perspective made me dislike him which seems in opposition with why his POV was included. Mirko still has this mysterious edge about him and protective quality towards Brooke as well as intense feelings for her. Brooke - the leading heroine is loyal, and hardened since she's been thrown into the vampire world but at the same time she is afraid for the safety of her friends. I was frustrated with her behavior at times but she pulled her act together by the end and redeemed my faith in her maturity and ability to own up to her mistakes. As for the romance I thought it was a bit overdone and too dramatic for my tastes but it worked well for the story.

Brooke Keller has finally accepted her Pijawikan (vampire) side and is content to move forward but others see her as a threat. As it's forbidden for such an creature to exist—a melez—who has the powers and strength of a higher breed of vampire but is still human. After Brooke kills Jelena in self-defense after being kidnapped she now faces the consequences of what that action brings. Mirko and Brooke face a bigger danger when Brooke's father—the most powerful vampire in existence—is looking for her. She soon discovers that not everything is how it seems and her enemies aren't who she thinks they are. As she starts putting together the bigger picture she comes to the realization that she has something worse to fear—losing Mirko. As things start to look particularly bad Brooke has to make decisions that will effect the people closest to her in order to prevail.

It seemed like the first half of the book was just unmemorable while the remaining half was teeming with action. In the second half it noticeably changes into an adult-like read more suitable for 16-year-olds+ as it contains swearing, violence, and suggested sexual content. The beginning of the story felt inconsistent with the rest and frankly odd but I enjoyed it more than what it started up as. I also really liked Brooke's best friend Kaitlynn because she's a strong character that holds it together even though she gets tossed some pretty huge obstacles. Jaren isn't a major part of this novel and he was forgotten the moment he no longer appeared. Which leaves me to question what happened to him and what will become of him? Either way I felt like his character wasn't significantly important. Furthermore Angeline Kace is wonderful at building up stories and creating intense endings that will leave you craving more! Admittedly I really loved Descended by Blood and Enemy Within had a lot of potential to be just as great. It was a good read but it took awhile to finally get invested in the story to appreciate it. It is written well, draws you further into the Pijawikan world, extends Brooke's enthralling story and leaves you with an exciting cliffhanger! All in all I'd recommend it for those who have already read Descended by Blood.

First – let me say I hate Angeline Kace. What? Yep. I do. Why? Cause now she has me totally invested in this kick ass series – and the third book is not out yet! When Enemy Within ended, and I realized I had just read the last page, I felt like the guy in the movies who falls to his knees in the rain and screams toward the sky in agony. I even clicked my kindle page forward/backward buttons a few times, trying to will more words to appear. It didn’t work. So yeah, sorry Angeline Kace, but I hate you now.

So in book one, Descended By Blood, where I thought there were some somewhat cheesy scenes – that was a completely foreign concept in Enemy Within. So what do we know? We know Brooke is part Pijawika, she’s falling for uber hot Mirko, and her best friend means everything in the world to her. In Descended by Blood Brooke has done something that makes her feel that her father, Zladislov, is now on the hunt for her. So right away Enemy Within starts on a high level of excitement. And that level doesn’t drop off, the whole book through.

Right away Brooke falls into a spavati, which is basically like a coma for Pijawika. And that allows us to see something so completely awesome – Mirko’s point of view. And we get to see it throughout the whole book! Ok, so I totally fell for Mirko in Descended By Blood. I thought he was all things wonderful, I couldn’t find anything wrong with him. So now that we get the opportunity to see how his hot brain (oh he is, see my left sidebar??) works. And it’s beautiful how it works. You get to see exactly how much he feels for Brooke, and how far he is willing to go for her.

These two are really building a romantic tale that is more than any reader could hope for. They have sexual tension that is so thick you can cut it with a knife. Then add in that their relationship is pretty much against the Pijawikan rules. But through it all, we get to see what each of them are thinking, and I couldn’t get enough.

This book was totally packed with exciting action scenes. Angeline Kace does a fantastic job of making you wonder who you can trust, and who you can’t, and then she rips the rug out from under you time and again. Brooke feels her humanity is slipping away, and begins to act and react more on instinct than on logic. And her character grows in leaps and bounds. In the beginning of Descended By Blood she was this regular high school kid, ready to do normal high school kid things with her awesome new boyfriend. Now she is this vampire, descended from vampire royalty pretty much. She is developing powers, and who knows how many she will have. She is proving herself a formidable opponent to those who are against her. She begins to change, she becomes more confident, more brazen. And I love every damn minute.

So many things happen in this book. We meet many more Pijawikans and Zao Duhs, and no one is safe in this book. Anything can happen – and oh-my-god, it freaking does. One chapter I would be cheering and whooping it up, and then the next I would be depressed and ready to cry, and then the next I’d be curling my toes reading some super hot scenes between Brooke and Mirko. (Ok, seriously, that Zao Duh can freaking KISS!)

This book takes you on a rollercoaster, and there are so many hairpin turns I know you will enjoy the ride. But it makes writing a review so incredibly hard, because I don’t want to give anything away! Just know that Angelince Kace has completely grabbed the bull by the horns in this book, and she does not let up. You get the urban fantasy, the paranormal romance, the mystery and intrigue, the romance, duplicity and secrets – it’s all there. Read this book, and then let me know what you think. I’m pretty sure you will love it as much as I did. And then you will hate Angeline Kace as much as I do.

4 stars- Still very much TEAM MIRKO!

I loved the strong, confident Mirko in book one and that hasn't changed. Jaren made me mad in book one and I never got over it. Brooke certainly was more patient with him than I was.

I haven't read a lot of vampire books over the years. Some I like but most I don't. It's nice, though, to find a series that has more depth to the vampire lore than most. The Descended by Blood series is full of complex lore that gives meaningful issues for these vampires to overcome. Different kinds of vampires with different social standing depending on whether they were made or born are the basis of racism and conflict in this series. Humans mixed in just heightens the issues. Brooke and Mirko are at the very center of all those problems. Centuries of tradition seem to overwhelming to battle. The depth in this series makes it clear this books doesn't suffer from any middle series let down. No, this one is compelling from start to finish.

As I said, I am team Mirko. Love the guy. He does get mad in this book and I totally get why but I so wanted to see him get over it. It hurt watching him in so much pain. That's a sign of great character development as I ached for the characters living on these pages. This boy is badass and can hold his own as long as no one throws powers at him. As a made vampire, he doesn't have those gifts. Give him a fair fight and he will win every time. He isn't above doing what it takes to protect Brooke, even if it means his life. Love that about him. Oh and how I loved their sexy in this book. Lots of stolen moments of yumminess! They really are perfect together.

So that means I shall NOT speak of Jaren.

I will, however, talk about Brooke. She's still fighting to deal with being a vampire, learning her power and dealing with drinking blood. She's savage at times as she learns to deal with the emotions of being a vampire. I'm gonna have to give her some slack there because the girl got on my last nerve in this book. I love her, don't get me wrong. She's outspoken and willing to stand up to anyone against the ridiculous racism that is part of the world she has discovered she belongs to. She's great in a fight. She's learning to use her power. But she makes the worlds worst decisions sometimes. There was one or two moments when I was feeling like that part of the horror movie when you know the bad guy is about to take out the clueless blonde and no amount of yelling at the TV can fix it. Yeah, it was like that. I get it but I still wanted to smack her.

The story moves quickly and once I worked through an issue I had with my copy of the book, I read it in about a day. There is non-stop action and excitement for sure. Lots and lots of sexy moments. A decision that made me of so happy. A killer cliffhanger that had me pretty upset and I'm seriously hoping we don't have to wait as long for book 3 as we did for book 2. All in all, I loved it. Can't wait for book 3.

This is great YA paranormal at it's best. If you haven't started this series and you love paranormal, then give it look. Think you might enjoy. - See more at: http://www.stuckinbooks.com/2013/07/e...

Holy steaminess!

Now I remember why I'm team Mirko!! That boy man can push me up against a wall any day of the week!

************

After "patiently" waiting for book #2, I absolutely devoured it. Something about the story, the connection to the characters, all made it seem so fresh & new to me. It took me a while to articulate exactly how to put this review....I went back and forth...and back and forth...nothing I said seemed to do justice to what I had just read. So, I waited. Now the words won't stop!

First things first! L-O-V-E!
The lengths that Mirko will go to keep Brooke safe, to protect her from her enemies, melted my heart....yet at the same time made me want to jump right into the book and join the fight with my bad ass ninja skills.
(and yes, they are bad ass!)

The love that he has for this girl is unfathomable. It knows no limits, it has no bounds, and there is a single thing in this world he wouldn't sacrifice for it. Burning bridges, assembling an army, or throwing a preppy blonde dude to the wolves, are simply a few sacrifices he would make for his girl. Honestly, as the story evolves I start to see it in Brooke as well. Yes, she's experiencing one hell of a change, there are those feelings for that preppy blonde kid, but I can see where her heart truly it.

Must-get-back-on-track, I could sit here and talk about their love for dayyyyyyys.....

I absolutely have to give it to Angeline, there are some massive twists that I would never have seen coming, but she was able to brilliantly throw them into the story with ease. The fight scenes were written out like a could see it right in front of me....that it, if I wanted to see a bunch of blood and body parts flying every where...Though next time I want a guest spot so I can punch Brooke's dad in the face! He pisses me the hell off!

Over all, this was a fantastic cliff hanger for the final installment of this trilogy, and I for one can NOT wait to see how this story concludes!

After waiting for what seemed like an eternity to read "Enemy Within" I must say that I was a little disappointed. The book was rather bland after the wonderful read of the first book. It seems that "Enemy Within" is suffering from the 'sophomore curse' that so many series do.

In this installment, Brooke finally makes a decision in her love triangle. After being betrayed by Jaren, she decides on Mirkos only to discover that their relationship is also forbidden. Initially, she believes that the father she has wanted to meet since her birth wants to kill her. However, soon, she learns that her mother kept her a secret from him and he wants to be a part of her life.

Brooke's best friend, Kaitlynn also must face the loss of her love, David. Then, she comes down with a bad case of menigittis. Hard choices will have to made. The only problem is who will make them and what will the outcome be.

Brooke and her father face a new threat. The commission has called upon each of them to testify in the death of Jelena. It is clear there is some political postering going on and there are those who would like to see Zladislov removed from power. This commission has the power of life and death over both Zladislov and Brooke. However, there will be betrayals as well as secrets revealed.

I enjoyed the read; but, just was not enamored as much as the first book. The action as well as the situation with the commission just seemed anti-climatic. I will go on to read the last book in the series because I want to know what happened after the cliffhanger ending. Read it for yourself and decide.

Descended by Blood was one of the best book The BookWhisperer read last year. I have an anxiously awaiting Enemy Within, and just couldn’t wait to get it started. I jumped right on reading this title when it was sent to me. Enemy Within picks up immediately following the conclusion of book one. We jump right into the story, and it takes on a whole new direction. After discovering her Father not to be the kind and wonderful man that just saved her; she is left on the run yet again. Now we have new enemies, and we will finally see the love triangle come to a close. This was an enjoyable follow second installment to the series, but I must admit it did not carry the momentum that I had expected following such an incredible story. I hope to see installment three pick back up, and finish out this story with the intensity that I was craving. ~BookWhisperer Reviewer JO~

I do have to admit I was a little lost in the beginning of this book, being as it was a year ago I read the first one, but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. I knew that I loved the first book too, so this helped me to keep reading. This story was very fast paced and was over before I knew it.

In the last book, I wasn't a huge Mirko fan, I was rooting for Jaren. However, once I started reading the steamy scenes between Brooke and Mirko, I quickly changed alliegences to Mirko. Man was that boy HOT! Anyway, I loved the storyline and I hated where the book left off. I can't wait for the next book to come out. I have no doubt that it will be just as good as these first two.

I liked this book more than the first which surprised me. I put off reading this book because I was worried that I wouldn't like it as much as the first. A lot of books have burned me that way and I feared this sequel could do the same. I shouldn't have doubted Ms. Kace! Won't happen again. Loved the dual POVs. More books are starting to go that way and I think its awesome!
Thanks so much for a great second book! Can't wait for the third.

Amazing sequel!!! Although I was disappointed with how long this book took to come out, it was well worth the wait. Can't wait for book 3! Only thing I would change was the cover....doesn't give an impression of how amazing this book is and the model looks a little weird.

Absolutely love this series. I am extremely disappointed that book three hasn’t been released. I can not locate a release date on any site.....
