Tex Miller Is Dead

Rate this book
She wants her life back. He wants to live. When a writer and her imaginary muse go head-to-head, real life gets complicated.

Callie Austin, the unknown author of the wildly popular Tex Miller book series, decides that twenty-plus years of living in anonymity is enough. Her plan? Kill the beloved Tex Miller. But with a fierce agent, a cut-throat editor, and a beyond-zealous fan base, Callie knows not everyone will be happy. And just wait until Tex hears about it.

At twenty-two, Callie, orphaned and grieving, conjured Tex Miller, a dashing adventurer, a now-adored literary character who makes women swoon and men sit up straighter. Her novel skyrocketed, but Callie was lucky. It was the mid-1990s, pre-internet explosion, and much to her publisher’s chagrin, she insisted she remain anonymous by using a pen name. The enigmatic Calliope Jones was born and cloistered away in one fell swoop, leaving an idolizing public scratching its collective head. Visible only to her, Tex Miller became her constant screwball companion.

Two decades and a dozen books later, on a routine trip to NYC, Callie plans to end the Tex Miller saga, but an up-and-coming streaming service’s offer to turn Callie’s books into an original series may waylay Tex’s demise. Things spiral further when her trusted longtime driver falls ill, and a young replacement chauffeur catches her eye—and maybe her heart, while Tex goes rogue, unsure he’s down with the new plot twists.

Throw in a dogged gossip blog’s rabid pursuit of ‘the truth’ along with Calliope Jones’s fervent fandom, and the world's favorite unknown author has her hands full.

I was instantly hooked by Callie and this fun, witty, charming and entertaining story. I was very intrigued by the blurb and knew I wanted to read this book. Tex Miller Is Dead was a laugh out loud read for me, and one I didn't want to put down. I loved Callie and was cheering for her from the get go. If you're looking for a flirty, clever, fun read, this one is perfect.

The memorable title, super fresh and fun plot, chaotic cover, and attractive blurb make this yet another fantastic debut I've read this month.

It's the story of a secret bestselling author and a chauffeur who actually isn't one. Andrew is so hot that I can feel it through the pages. Callie keeps seeing her fictional character Tex and speaking to him, which earns her weird looks from Drew and her agent, Laney. This also makes for some conflict in this book, but it ends happily ever after.

I really liked the scenes that talked about the ins and outs of the publishing business, as well as the ones about author signing events.

This is unlike anything I've read before. Do take a chance on it when it releases the day after tomorrow!.

I had no idea what to expect with this book, but to hooked me from the description!

This book follows a “woman of a certain age” who secretly is the author of one of the best selling book series and her younger “chauffer”. This book has unforgettable, lovable characters (Laney Li has my whole heart), a dreamy love interest (Drew also has my whole heart, it’s really weird for my heart, but it makes me get Callie more), and a great story.

I’m not usually one to love a time jump in a book, and while this was a little jarring it really helped progress the story forward in a very natural way.

I feel incredibly lucky to have found this book and it’s one I’ll revisit again for sure. Do yourself a favor and get this one, it comes out May 9th!

Thank you to Booksirens and Watermount Publishing for an opportunity to read this book! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

It has been such a joy to read TEX MILLER IS DEAD and easily my favorite read of 2023 so far.

Callie Austin has spent the last 24 years of her life as the bestselling author of the wildly successful Tex Miller series. Except she writes under a pen name that is a heavily guarded secret. She also sees and talks to Tex Miller, the irreverent, dashing adventurer of the book series. No, really, she sees him, carries on conversations with him. He's her muse and in many ways, has overtaken her very quiet, reclusive life.

So, Callie wants him dead. Tex isn't going gentle into that good night. No, siree.

But Callie's life is about to get a big shake up when she meets Andrew. Sweet, handsome, GREEK Andrew. (We love Andrew. Seriously. Adding him to the book boyfriend list.) Callie grapples with her feelings for the younger Andrew and struggles as she works to take back a life that she's spent 24 years avoiding.

Y'all. Y'ALL! I just loved this book. It's a quirky, genre-bending romcom with the King of Imaginary Friends, a romance that will grip your heart, side characters I want as my friends (hello, Laney Li!) and ultimate the happy ending that left me with a smile.

And ALSO, this is Kelly's DEBUT. The writing is so confident, the pacing is on point, the characters endearing, the story engaging, and the humor shines through. I raced through this in a day and a half.

So. Go read this. It will make your day brighter. I promise.

(Spice level... 2.5/5...)

3.0 stars. Despite all the rave reviews that led me to 1-click, most of this story just didn't work for me. Author Calliope/Callie's constant conversations throughout the book with her leading fictional character, Tex, didn't charm me in the least. Frankly, I thought they were, well... just weird. Especially when she's with other people and talking back with an imaginary character. Sure she gets odd looks and the side eye quite a bit, but doesn't let that discourage her. 🤔 So...after a bit, all conversations with Tex, I just skipped right over.

She's a popular author who fiercely protects her privacy. There's a streaming series pitched for her Tex series. She also decides to write a book under her real name, and she meets a guy/Drew.

Things get leaked, calamity ensues, yada, yada. I got frustrated with her wishy-washy push and pull with Drew, her insecurity, and all the rah rah with her hiding her identity.

What I did enjoy were characters Bernard, Laney Li, and Andrew/Drew. They were the highlight.

Thankfully, there is a rushed HEA to end this unusual story.

What do I know? I'm not an author. Maybe they really do have conversations with their fictional characters in public. Whatevs, I just have to call 'em like I see 'em, and for me, this was just an okay read.

A very original take on a Rom Com

This was a great original romantic comedy that doesn't quite fit into a particular mold. Callie created Tex and the series he appears in after a particularly trying period in her life and through all the travails of finishing her first book, finding an agent, finding a publisher, and launching a highly successful brand with Tex, her James Bond type main character. In that time, she was able to insulate herself with her art and character not just under a pen name but also from her own relationships. But one day she decides it’s time to ‘kill’ off Tex and then the hilarity begins. Tex appears to her throughout the book speaking at times with fatherly advice, at others like a best friend, and still others like her significant other to help her find her way, get an agony aunt’s feedback, and fluster and push her beyond what she thinks she can do. However, one day she meets Drew, her new driver, for her latest trip to New York City and things really begin to unravel for Callie. This may sound confusing, and at times I had to sit back and put the narrative into a mental timeline, but the story is very compelling and so artfully written that you will easily follow along. This is a great read that will leave you giggling and laughing at Tex’s antics and rooting her to find her Happily Ever After.

Callie Austin seems to be living the charmed life. As the anonymous author of a dozen novels featuring the handsome leading man Tex Miller, she's developed a loyal fan base over the years, and is able to move about her life due to her anonymity.

Both Callie's parents died when she was in her early twenties, and as a result she's built walls around herself and emotions for protection for the last twenty odd years. Living in Charlotte, NC she leaves her safe space and travels to NYC when needed to meet with her agent/best friend Laney and editors and publishers. When Callie tells Laney she wants to kill off Tex in her next novel, Laney objects. And who else objects? Tex himself. Tex appears only to Callie, and provides insight as well as inspiration for her novels. And the conversations - and how he shows up at the most inopportune times - is quite funny. You'll find yourself rooting for Tex and for Callie, as she's met a younger man in NYC who appears to be taken with her, but she's having difficulty believing she's worthy of a man's trust and love - especially a younger hot bachelor.

Written with a good mix of romance and humor, you'll not want to put this one down. Thanks to the author for sending this my way along with some nice swag! I look forward to reading more from this author!

It took me about a quarter of the book to really get into it. The reason for this actually ended up being one of the reasons the book is so enjoyable. The female MC, Callie, has the equivalent of an imaginary friend. The MC from her books makes random appearances throughout the book, often adding humour to the story. At first, it was hard for me to wrap my head around this, but after he disappears for a bit I was able to get settled. The main driving force keeping me engaged was my love for Drew. It bothered me that were so many references to Callie’s being ‘a certain age’. An age gap in the late 30s and 40s is really not that big of a deal, but the MC really kept putting that obstacle in place.
The chemistry between Callie and Drew is swoony. Drew is perfection in a book boyfriend.

Points for a Clever Story Line !! . . .

Callie Austin is the anonymous author of the popular “Tex Miller” book series. After 20+ years, she decides to kill off the beloved Tex Miller. She expects push-back from a fierce agent, a cut-throat editor, and a crazed fan base who apparently want Tex to live forever.

Callie had created the Tex Miller character in the mid-1990s and was able to remain anonymous under a pen name since the internet had not gotten so popular yet. Now ready to end the Tex Miller run, a streaming service wants to turn her books into an original series. A combination of difficulties make her choices bog her down as she works on the new plot twists and tries to avoid a persistent gossip blog’s search for ‘the truth’ about the pen name “Calliope Jones” while Callie Austin is run ragged trying to stay sane. So will she kill Tex Miller off? Or will he live forever in infamy?

Truly a Pleasure to Read

I read a lot of books. Like seriously, a lot. I am an author, an editor, and an unashamed bibliophile. And I say from the bottom of my heart that this is one of my favorite books I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
Huston’s characters are endearing, her storyline compelling, and her one liners had me snorting to myself as I held the phone pressed to my nose desperate for just one more chapter before going to bed.
I am already recommending this book to anyone who will listen, and cannot wait to see what comes next from Kelly Elizabeth Huston.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway.

I love the sweet storyline of Callie and Drew, but I just don't follow the deal with Tex. I was confused for the majority of this book. I tried to imagine it like in Jane the Virgin when she sees her characters while she's writing, but it just didn't track with the way Tex was described here. He's supposedly like an imaginary friend, but then he's also Callie...? I just don't get it. Aside from Tex, the other characters were great, and I was rooting for Callie and Drew from the beginning!

Okay, so rom-com isn't my favorite genre, but this book was cute! A romance author who has no romance in her own life gets drawn towards a man she is making a lot of assumptions about. Miscommunication plays a big role in the misadventures that run throughout this book. A quick read, it was a nice escapist on a lazy afternoon!

I received an advance copy of this novel. While it’s not my normal genre (Sci-Fi), I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters are engaging and fun, they had me laughing out loud at times. The story is compelling, and I couldn’t wait to see how it progressed, I read it in just a couple of days. I highly recommend this book.

Put Tex Miller on your summer reading list. It's sweet, smart, sassy, and sexy in turns. While Callie Austin is the star of the show, the surrounding cast of characters add depth an color to the story. A very enjoyable read!

When reclusive author Callie leaves her home in North Carolina for her regular visit to see her Agent & Publisher in New York City, she expects to see her regular driver, Bernard, of the Town Car Service she has used for the past two decades, waiting for her.

Instead, she is met by a younger driver, who explains that Bernard has been hospitalised due to a heart attack earlier that day.
She insists on being taken to the hospital to see how Bernard is doing, and her new driver, Drew, takes her there.

As well as her anxiety levels being high as she worries about her friend Bernard, her emotions are all over the place, as she has decided to kill off the hero of her very popular, as well as very lucrative, series of books she has written over the last twenty years. “Tex Miller” is a James Bond type of character, beloved by all her readers, and her Publishers.

This is a brilliantly written book, spanning several years of Callie’s life, and relationships with her inner circle and her “imaginary friend” who keeps her sane when he’s not creating problems for her.
She has difficult decisions to make, but with the help of her closest friends, manages to get them right.

I loved how my emotions swung between laughter, tears, joy, and despair, but I enjoyed every minute of it, and can’t wait to read more from this author.

I really enjoyed reading a book with a main character that is older than twenty-something - in this case 47. Callie is a successful author of a best-selling book-series - but hardly anybody knows that. When in N.Y.C. on business she meets a handsome, slightly younger man and there is instant attraction. But will this attraction lead to more?

I liked all the main characters but I have to say I couldn't really relate to the imaginary friend thing. Also I think there was just a bit too much back and forth in the story and I didn't really understand why the two can't be seen with each other. Other than that I enjoyed the book very much and will definitely check out any other books that Kelly will write.

I wasn't hooked straight away, but after a couple of chapters I was totally invested in Callie. A refreshing not your run of the mill book. The main characters are all 40ish or older. At points I was rooting for Callie, and then so annoyed and cursing her in the next breath. Tex is absolutely hilarious and lovable, but I also wanted to punch him at times. I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel, and can't wait to read more from this author. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
