A completely addictive, twist-laden psychological thriller with an ending that will leave you speechless. Perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Nicole Trope and Adele Parks.
“There’s been a terrible accident, Brigid, but the only thing that matters is that I love you. We’ll get through this together.” As I slowly wake in my hospital bed, my darling husband’s familiar voice soothes me. Yet, as I look across at him, I can’t shake the feeling that this is not my husband at all…
Later, I realize the awful truth. Because of my injury, I’m unable to feel the same emotion towards those I loved. The doctor calls this emotional amnesia, but gazing over at my husband, I call it torture.
As the weeks pass, my family and friends keep me going, especially Charity. Years before, she married my ex-husband and I, in turn, married hers. To keep our friendship group together we kept things civil - I thought we had the perfect blended family.
But once I’m back home, I begin to notice Charity inserting herself into my family. At first it’s little things, her hand lingering a moment too long on my husband’s back, playing the role of hostess in my home at a family barbeque. Then I see her encouraging her wayward brother to pay my only daughter more attention and I feel instantly threatened.
That evening, I am haunted by a familiar nightmare of an unknown man forcing someone under water, vowing that their next breath will be their last. As I gasp for air, my husband tries to comfort me.
But lying there in his arms, I feel anything but reassured. With no one I can really trust, I have to ask myself: does the man who gave me a second chance at love want me gone?
Creating stories and then sharing them with you so that you can shine your own light on them, reading through a lens shaped by your own perceptions, is such a joy. I hope you enjoy the books!

Second Wives is the first book by author Carey Baldwin that I've read. Two women, Charity and Brigid, have divorced their husbands and married the other's spouse. They might've been good friends; it's hard to tell given their different stories. Charity's daughter died. Brigid's daughter is alive and dating Charity's brother. After a dinner with a few neighbor couples, a gun goes off and Brigid suffers an injury. When she awakens, she's unsure which man is her husband. The story revolves around deciding which woman is being honest, and why do Brigid's dreams of Lake Tahoe seem to reveal a past murder that she might have been involved in? Baldwin draws you in easily, forcing you to turn the pages constantly. Thought I'd just read for an hour but 3+ later, I finished the book. Was such a strong story, and the characters truly had an impact on me. I rooted from Brigid the entire way, and she deserves so much more. Writing quality was good. Character development was truly impressive for a single novel. I felt like I knew these people, even if several moments were over the top. Can't wait to try another book by Baldwin.
4 ‘best friends’ 2 hubby’s 2 wives They divorce Then re marry The one not married to before! ( so they swopped ) 😎
You get the picture on how this book starts and how easily the story then unfurls as they all continue to be ‘best friends’….of course there are many rippling undercurrents and after a shooting at the wonderfully named ( and for my mind imagined ) ‘Supper Club’ things get confused and wrangled, as do their lives This book is really helped by the writing of the author which I found ‘chirpy’ and refreshing and casual/chatty whilst examining a serious subject of emotional amnesia and its affects It would have been easy to take this book a certain way and ‘job done’ but the author really sells it to the reader and welcomes you in to this complex world ( but not complicated to read ) Its a psychological thriller with an unexpected pair of teeth and I really enjoyed being surprised by it
Before I begin this review, I want to say something: I read horror and thriller books. I can suspend reality to a certain degree, but to read this book, you have to have only a passing nod with reality.
Despite this being one of the most unrealistic thrillers I’ve ever read, I did enjoy it. We start with an unbelievable arrangement; two best friends who are married to each other’s ex-husbands. Brigid was married to Nash, and her friend Charity was married to Jackson. When the two couples got divorced, they swapped out the husbands and got remarried, then tried to continue on as a group of friends.
Brigid was the victim of an accidental(?) shooting, and due to the blood loss, ended up with anoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain). This is when we get to another completely unbelievable part of the story - her psychiatrist diagnosed her with a rare form of Dissociative Identity Disorder, which she calls “emotional amnesia”. Brigid knows that Jackson is her new husband and remembers everything, except for how to love him.
I’m not a psychiatrist, so I don’t even know if that’s a thing, but this emotional amnesia gets difficult for her new husband to handle. Brigid knows she SHOULD love him, and must have at one time if she married him, but she doesn’t remember WHY she loves him or what that felt like. As all of this is happening, she begins having a recurring dream about watching a woman be murdered in a lake. Is this part of her anoxia, or is this a suppressed memory?
This was all highly implausible, and that did distract from the mysteries swirling around these couples and their friends. The plot itself was decent, but the characters were a bit out there. I did find this enjoying though, even if there were a few eye-rolls along the way. 3.5 stars.
(Thank you to Bookouture, Carey Baldwin and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on March 17, 2023.)
I bury hatches but I keep maps of where I put 'em.
Brigid split with her husband. She suspects an affair because he remarried Charity so quickly but he swears he didn't. The one person who could relate to this shock was Charity's then-husband. He wooed Brigid and she was unable to resist his charm and attention after being neglected in her marriage for so long.
So they pulled the ole husband switcheroo. Confused yet? Okay, let's get after it.
Brigid insists on things remaining amicable for the sake of their daughter Tish. The two swapped couples even stay in the same social circles. Things are chugging along peacefully until one night at Supper Club.
Brigid is injured in an incident and Charity vows to help her heal and be her best friend. That is until she overhears a conversation between Brigid and her ex-husband, who is now Charity's husband.
Now she's starting to think maybe everyone would be better off without Brigid. She lost a child so she could even be there for Tish. Perhaps Brigid shouldn't have made it out of that party alive after all..
This is a neat concept and I felt like it was very clever but I was a bit confused by the swap and how many characters there were to learn. I think with a confusing storyline like this, maybe the rest should have been a bit simpler.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review!
I was so excited to see that Carey Baldwin had a new book coming out after reading The Marriage Secret last year and loving it but unfortunately this one didn’t live up to my expectations. The premise of the book was great but it was rather slow and challenging to keep my attention. There was a lot of characters to keep track of, which sometimes lead to confusion. Most of the plot twists were implausible but at times it kept it suspenseful. While I like the ending, overall it was a struggle to get through the book.
***** Many thanks to Bookouture, Carey Baldwin, and NetGalley for the #gifted copy as it was provided to me in turn for my honest opinion.
They both want their happy ever after. But who will kill for it? We were such good friends... until the day she married my ex-husband. Now, I’ve married hers, and we’ve agreed to get along for the sake of our families.
Wow what a twisty addictive read this was. This may not be the conventional way to leave a marriage by marrying your friends husband and she yours but makes for great reading. This is the path Charity and Brigid have taken and it may have devastating consequences for both. As the four are good friends, they have had to learn how to navigate this new environment. Brigid has been involved in a terrible accident that has her with some amnesia about the finer details of what happened, at times she feels she is going mad trying to understand the circumstances of what occurred, she is experiencing flashes of memory but who really was out to hurt her?
I really enjoyed this light hearted read and quickly whipped through it in an afternoon. I would not call it a thriller to me it is more a drama with some shocking revelations which I did not pick at the end. thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest unbiased review.
For those readers who are interested, I am taking this opportunity to offer insight on how I came up with Second Wives. I often draw inspiration from real-life, and this story is no exception- though of course it’s all fiction, folks. No actual events, characters or places are real. In Second Wives, best friends divorce and then remarry each other's ex-husbands. Because they share the same social circle, they try to remain cordial, while tensions boil beneath the surface. In my life, I have known two couples, in a very tight group, who actually married each other’s exes. Luckily, in that instance, no one was murdered...
And the Supper Club in the book was inspired by an actual club- the one my parents belonged to. I remember my mother getting all dolled up and my father putting on a tie. We didn’t have a lot of money for entertainment or dining out, so the excitement prior to my parents’ monthly supper with friends was palpable. It’s a lovely memory for me, and I really enjoyed including the ensemble cast of characters that make up the fictional Supper Club in Second Wives.
As always, I’ve included loads of surprises and twists, which I hope you’ll enjoy! But in addition to all the juicy elements I love in a psychological thriller, I’ve added some unique factors. In particular, I explore the way emotion is tied to (or in this case un-tied from) memory.
Typically, we think of amnesia as the forgetting of facts. Where you’ve been, what you’ve done, maybe even who you are. But I got to wondering “what if?”
What if you could remember everything... but the feelings connected to those memories were missing. That’s what happens to Brigid, one of the main characters in Second Wives. She can recall her entire life, but it’s as if she’s watching a movie starring someone else. Imagine waking up, looking at your spouse, and not being able to feel the deep love you know you have for them. Brigid has only just found love again after the breakup of her long-time marriage, and now, suddenly, she must start over, and try to recreate her relationship with her new husband from scratch.
And her emotional amnesia is not her only problem. She has a recurring nightmare where she witnessed a murder, and she wonders if it might be a memory disguised as a dream. If it is real, and she is the witness, then who is the victim? And how can she trust the people closest to her... how can she trust herself?

Second Wives at first seems like a family drama kind of book. But just wait it has much more to it.
What a concept. Two couples divorce and then marry each others Ex's.There are children involved so you can imagine the drama involved.
But when the books get really good is when the mystery/thriller aspects are introduced.
They never truly know who to trust. They have to put up with people they really don't like. They all have a mutual friend group...,imagine the awkwardness!
Some assumptions are true and some are not. There is always something happening. Some characters are quite interesting, some are not really delved into deeply.
Overall a fun read.
I have read one previous book by this author that I also enjoyed.
Sort of gave me Glass Onion vibes but with swingers? Kind of? Idk. There were so many characters to keep track of and some chapters are from a mystery person’s POV while you’re figuring out who the murderer is. It was honestly very confusing to read for the most part and the ending wasn’t really worth it.
They both want their happy ever after. But who will kill for it? We were such good friends... until the day she married my ex-husband. Now, I’ve married hers, and we’ve agreed to get along for the sake of our families.

Second Wives is a wicked, twisty domestic drama that will keep you flipping the pages until the scandalous reveal. Best friends, Brigid and Charity have divorced their partners. Then they remarry each other’s husbands. One night after a freak accident, Brigid wakes up in the hospital. Confused who her husband is, she is unsure of who is telling the truth. Why do memories of a lake keep appearing? Who is keeping secrets? Who is revealing lies? What is the answer to the obvious question? Shocked yet……. you will be! An addictive, fun and speedy read full of surprises, entertainment and mystery. Carey pulls you in and doesn’t let go. A fast paced thriller with a premise to get you excited. While this is my first book by this author, I will be picking up more of her back catalogue to explore. A plot full of drama, a list of devilish characters and a selection of dastardly deeds. Grab a copy and experience the tension.
And just like that, I have found a new author that I must follow.
This book was nothing like I expected. At first, I wasn't sure that I would enjoy or even finish this book since the 1st chapter was a struggle to get through and I had to push myself to keep reading. I'm so glad that I did. This book had me all over the place. And the ending was nothing like I expected. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a book that keeps them on their toes.
This novel has all that you want in a twisty psychological thriller. Twists, betrayal, secrets and more. I can’t imagine finding out my husband had an affair and getting a divorce only to turn around and marry their ex-husband.
Always trust your instincts. Amnesia can be powerful. Sometimes we block out details that are painful. This was my third Baldwin novel and I will read anything she writes.
This novel is available now as of March 17, 2023. I had a @netgalley copy thanks for @bookouture. 🖤
After divorcing, friends remarried each other's husbands.
After an accident, Brigid awakens in the hospital with her husband by her side, telling her she will be alright. Except that he is her ex-husband, her friend Charity's spouse. But why does Brigid believe that Nash is the only person she can rely on?
The story revolves around deciding which woman is being honest, and why do Brigid's dreams of Lake Tahoe seem to reveal a past murder that she might have been involved in?
I had a hard time finishing this book because the plot is disjointed, the dynamic feels forced, and I didn't care for the characters.
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy reading this novel.
The first chapter made me smile :). I thought, well yes, why not. As long as everybody is happy, right? ;) The next few chapters felt not like a thriller at all. It was more about domestic and family problems and I was wondering where the author was going to take me.
They always say that good things come to those who wait. And I waited because the story intrigued me and the more I read the more confused I became. I really still did not see it, but I was hooked. That is a fact.
Suddenly the author gave us a view inside the head of the bad one. I still had not the slightest idea who was talking to us through the pages at that moment. Was it a woman or a man? Young or old? Friend or stranger? I honestly could not tell you even if I wanted to.
Some people do not have any scruples at all. They stop at nothing to achieve their goals. All the rest is collateral damage. When the going gets tough, you can count on your friends. But sometimes help comes from a different corner too.
And then everything falls into place and I just loved, loved, loved it. In my opinion one of the best books I have read. 5 stars
I loved the opening to this book. It absolutely kept me turning those pages. The drowning in the water prologue was haunting. I needed to find out why Brigid was having the disturbing thoughts and dreams - or repressed memories. The mystery made it easy for me to become immensely invested.
There was a colourful list of characters - a group of friends who are all part of a supper club. I had my suspicions of nearly all of them during the book. The last quarter had me motoring through the pages with excitement. I needed to know who did it and why.
I enjoyed reading from Charity and Brigid’s perspectives. The mystery POV was chilling. As for the USA location, I thought it was charming.
All in all, a great mystery, one that will have you guessing throughout!

🛑MY Review🛑
I really enjoyed this book once the story picks up. The down side for me was the fact there was way too many characters. I had to start back over and pull out a notebook to keep up with who was who. I felt the same uncertainty and anxiety Brigid did. The twists and turns are completely unexpected and I could hardly wait for the next one. Absolutely a true psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist in every sense of the word. #SecondWives #NetGalley ******Disclosure******* Many thanks to NetGalley ,the publisher and the author for the chance to read and review a copy of this interesting book in exchange for my honest review. This book was very interesting right from the start. The story was a little confusing in the beginning on who was with who initially especially after we find out that the couples have switched spouses, however it was quickly resolved and easier to follow. The main characters are Brigid and Nash, and Charity and Jackson. When both couples reach a rough patch and divorce it is almost instant that they connect with the other person’s spouse. This could make for a very rough situation however since all couples are happy and still friends, they make it work, until they don’t. When an accident leaves Brigid in the hospital her friends are there to comfort her and check on her. However, when the nurse assumes that Nash is Brigid’s husband, he doesn’t correct her, and this leaves Brigid wondering why his lie feels so real. This plot was very deep and complex, but it was also very compelling as a reader, and it left me desperate to figure out who was lying and what was really going on with Brigid and Nash. The one thing I didn’t like about this book was it was a little confusing at first to try to keep track of who was who, who was married to who and who was faking but once I got deeper into the story it all made sense. This was the second book that I’ve read by this author, and she is really proving why her work is one to be watched for. Carey Baldwin has a way of writing characters that you can connect with, and then throwing them into a plot that not anyone would be able to think of let alone write. She produces her plots with such passion and mystery that the whole time you think you know what is going on only to have the rug ripped out from you in the end, in a good way of course. This book was fantastic and I’m starting to think that Mrs. Baldwin is an author that needs to be looked for because it’s not just anyone that can write as well as she can. I loved this book, and I can’t wait to see what she comes out with next.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
This book was definitely unlike anything I've ever read, I'll definitely give it that. The events that led to the main character's accident and recovery afterwards was a new and refreshing idea that I hadn't read before, yet there were many points that I felt like I didn't want to finish the book, although personally I'm never one to leave a book unfinished, so I pushed through it, hoping it would get better as it progressed.
The synopsis sounded good at the beginning and led me to believe that this was something actually worth reading. While the description says that this is a psychological thriller and "would leave you speechless", I often found myself bored throughout and questioned "what is even going on?" Also, it mentioned that this book is perfect for Freida McFadden's (and other similar authors) fans, but honestly they don't even compare! I am a big fan of Freida McFadden and this writing style is not even remotely similar or interesting. I guess I was just expecting more out of this book than what I actually got. The whole thing lacked in the psychological thriller genre department, in my opinion.
Most chapters listed a specific location relevant to California that I didn't really understand, which leads me to wonder if it was even necessary to mention. There was a lot of bickering, drama and gossip which definitely held my interest, but at the same time it felt like the book was filled with random events that were used to just fill up space in the story line. Totally unnecessary. Many of the characters were unrelatable and easy to dislike, or just small with little roles and very unforgettable. The friend groups daily shenanigans seemed a little far fetched and highly unlikely to happen in the real world.
I was intrigued by the blurb for Second Wives, a new psych thriller by Carey Baldwin. While there is a lot going on in this story, I mostly enjoyed it.
As with many a psych thriller, there is a prologue that gets the readers' curiosity going. I do like it when it isn’t clear as to whether the prologue is in the past or something that will happen in the course of the story.
I’m not going to tell you which one it is in this case.
The setup itself is different. It makes for a lot of awkwardness among characters which naturally feeds the psych part of the psych thriller. Who is authentic? Who is putting up a front? Which character is lying...or are several hiding secrets?
While it makes for many of those types of questions, it also makes it difficult to know who is trustworthy in their narration.
For example, Charity seems too good to be true. And her inner monologues prove that she usually has an ulterior motive for being as nice as she is. Her competition with Brigid is understandable, but it clouds the waters.
Their character development is interesting. as it becomes clear that the two women have more in common than it would appear.
One thing I did struggle with is the sheer number of events that occurred throughout the plot. I get that it is a psych thriller, so the author needs to keep the reader on their toes. It feels like not enough is done to lay the groundwork for the ultimate reveal.
Yes, there are definitely some jaw-drop moments, and the author did surprise more than a few times. But I feel like there are not enough “connect the dots” moments – almost like the author had so many ideas but not a clear path to integrating all of them.
And I did not like the epilogue at all. That felt forced. However, I did enjoy Second Wives. Carey Baldwin certainly kept me guessing, and I suppose that’s what I ultimately want out of a psych thriller.

What could go wrong when two woman swap husbands and marry them? Second Wives is a , twisty domestic drama that will keep you flipping the pages until the scandalous reveal and staying up way to late to read until the end! Confused who her husband is, she is unsure of who is telling the truth. Why do memories of a lake keep appearing? Who is keeping secrets? Who is revealing lies? I loved the premise of this! Two women, previously friends, swap each others’ husbands. Like whaaat 🤣 So messy and tense, I love it! The pacing felt great & who doesn’t love an unreliable narrator?
I will say, it was a bit confusing and hard to keep track of who was who at times. But the ending was good, and that’s generally what I hope for in a thriller. It wasn’t my favorite thriller all-time, but it was a good time.
3.5 ⭐️
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
Second Wives by Carey Baldwin opened with a bang! Literally. Brigid and Nash were married and then not. He married Charity after her divorce from Jackson - a bit too soon for Brigid's taste - and she then started seeing Jackson. In essence they switched spouses. Now they are all supposed to be friends, happy with their new choices, new lives, etc. It's all very civilized.
But is it? After a shocking accident, Brigid hears a shocking confession from her ex-husband and her life begins to spiral out of control. Her emotions and memories are all over the place and she is having trouble determining what is real and what is not. Will the truth kill her or set her free?
This was a fantastic read that I read in one sitting, didn't want to put the book down!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
First, I want to thank Carey Baldwin, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
OH YEAH!!! Come on, you know I just had to read Second Wives by Carey Baldwin!! Why?! Because I know two real life couples that married each other's spouses. So….I needed to know what twisted juicy storyline she had for her fictional characters. Carey totally exceeded my expectations big time!!!
As always I have to give kudos to the extremely talented graphic designers at Bookouture for designing a beautiful cover!
Oh how I couldn’t agree more with Brigid about our favorite sport being staying home and cosing up by the fire with a good mystery and cup of apple cider (well make mine a tea though). We both are not fans of the colder months nor skiing!!
Casey sucks you into her addictive and fast paced storyline straight from the intense prologue! From there Casey takes you on a wild twisted drama filled rollercoaster ride! This is unlike any psychological thriller you have read prior!
The ups and downs of the families and their friendships is the key theme of Second Wives.
Carey fascinated me with introducing me to what emotional amnesia as this played a key role into one of the storylines.
WOW!! Never in a million years did I see that major climatic twist coming out of the blue! You think you knew how this story would end but never ever this way!!! Mind blown!!!
Second Wives is a must read for Carey Baldwin fans! It is emotional, intense, twisted, has shock value, and packed with drama!!! I would highly suggest this too. your TBR!
Well this was a fun read and it really worked for me. At first I wasn't sure where it was going to go domestic or thriller. About half way through it got quire suspenseful. I loved the ending
I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own
I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher, for which I thank them.
“Second Wives” is a thriller by Carey Baldwin. I must admit, the initial plot drew me in - friends who swap husbands but remain friends. Okay, I can see it happening, so why not? However, it took me a few chapters to keep the main women (Charity and Brigid) straight - then a few more to keep the children and husbands attached to the correct woman. After getting the characters figured out, there were then the secondary characters - who I think could’ve been reduced to a key few. As the story went on, I wasn’t sure any of the characters were reliable narrators - including the psychologist. I wanted this book to work a lot better than it did, but at times the book had odd details that didn’t move the plot along and at other times just dragged. I’d give the author another try as I’ve previously read a book by her and enjoyed it - possibly this book was just a miss for me.
Two friends switch husbands. I knew this had to be juicy. How civilized, switching husbands as if it’s as casual as exchanging recipes. I was a bit muddled about Brigid but thought I had Charity figured out. Turns out I was wrong on both accounts. The real nemesis is revealed much later in the book and then the pieces click into place nicely. I Blanche at the thought of swapping spouses with anyone especially within the same friend group, but it makes for an excellent plot. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the advance copy.
