It’s no surprise that a beach trip would be one of the destinations on Maisie and Dot’s bucket list, so when the ladies arrange to meet up with Dot’s childhood friend for a Tybee Island getaway, they can’t wait to smell that salt air. A visit to the local pirate festival makes for a swashbuckling good time until the newly-crowned Pirate King turns up as gator bait. Join Dot and Maisie as they, once again, spend their vacation sleuthing to save a friend and her husband from jail time and find out who killed Not-So-Jolly Roger.
Double-Crossed Bones is the third book in the Bucket List Mysteries by S.C. Merritt.
Maisie and Dot are taking their next adventure to Tybee Island in Georgia to visit Jenny, an old friend of Dot’s. Their trip is just in time for them to enjoy the local pirate festival. One morning, Maisie, Dot and Jenny take an airboat ride and they stumble across more than just local wildlife. They find the dead body of the Pirate King who happens to be a good friend of Jenny’s husband. Can Maisie and Dot help Jenny clear her husband’s name when he becomes a suspect?
I am usually one that does not like to read a series out of order. This is the first time I have read a book in a series and did not start with the first book. This can be read as a standalone. There were a few times where there was a reference to a previous story, but I did not feel like I was missing any key information. It does make me want to read the other books because it referred to some interesting things. My curiosity is making me want to know what they were talking about!
This is such a great theme for a cozy mystery. Two friends who are a little bored with retirement make a bucket list of the places they want to visit. This means a new location every book. I love Maisie and Dot. They are such great characters. We cannot forget about the dogs, Magnum and Angus. I am going to read the first two books to see how their story starts off.
One of my favorite parts was the airboat ride they took. The author did a great job with the details. I could just picture sitting on the airboat going through the marshlands trying to look out for Gus the alligator. This book was set in October, but I think it’s a perfect read for the summer.
Thank you to the author for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
There’s nothing about this series that I don’t like.
Making the series revolve around a “bucket list” of places to visit is a great way to avoid the Cabot Cove syndrome of main characters being involved in murder after murder in their home town. Hitting the road in an RV to visit a different locale each book keeps locations fresh with an endless supply of people to meet and victims to be had.
Dot being a retired homicide detective gives an air of believability to her being, if not welcomed, at least allowed to offer expertise to the local authorities. As a former restaurant owner, Maisie is dipping her toe into the world of social media and maintains a food blog. . . which provides an excuse for recipes to be included. Dot has a retired police dog, a german shepherd. Maisie has a Scottish terrier. Both are written realistically with no exaggerated cuteness, abilities or heroics.
This book is a trip enjoy Pirate Fest on Tybee Island, Georgia near Savannah. When a treasure hunting local attorney is a surprise choice for the festival’s Pirate King, things go downhill fast. Dot and Maisie are drawn into the mystery when they are on a tour boat when the body is found.
With no shortage of motives and possible suspects, the book is a quick, well written read.
I just love these two friends and their pups! They've had some pretty awesome adventures, and I think Dot might've just had more fun than ever in this book. Who knew this serious ex-cop had such a fun side as being a huge fan of pirates enough to wanna attend a Pirate Fest and even go in costume? Then when a local murder occurred, Dot was right in the thick of it getting updates, so I'm sure she enjoyed being included there too.
Meanwhile, Maisie made a new friend when she met Dot's old friend, and little Angus actually liked Jenny's dog Pookie. Even Dot's retired K-9 officer Magnum got in on the canine fun while they were with the dog sitter. Later on in the book, I started suspecting who might've killed Roger, but there were some other twists involved too. Great showdown and another yay for Maisie, Dot and the pups! Can't wait to see what they get into next!
Double-Crossed Bones is the third book in the Bucket List Mysteries by S.C. Merritt. This is such a great idea for a cozy mystery series. Two good friends who are a bit bored with their retirement make a sort of “bucket list” of the places they want to go and visit. This means that there will be a new adventure location in every new book. I just loved the characters, Maisie and Dot. They are such great characters. We also cannot forget about the cute dogs, Magnum and Angus. I am going to go back to read the first two books to see how their story starts off. I received an arc for this book and am giving my review.
Fast paced and plenty of misdirection. So many suspects since the victim did not try to make friends when he was alive and his only friend is the one being accused of his murder. Dot puts on her detective cap to help clear her childhood friend's husband. The dogs mostly enjoy their time with a fun babysitter while the ladies are off looking for clues. Nice descriptions of places to visit on Tybee Island and Savannah.
I received a free advance review copy of this book and am voluntarily providing my honest review. This a great book, easy to read and very enjoyable. I really like books that showcase mature women. I can't wait for the next Bucket List Mystery.
I never grow tired of SC Merritt’s style of writing: light-hearted, full of drama and twists and turns, and always an unexpected ending. Very satisfying and full of Southern charm and wit.
I don’t want to spoil the story. Suffice it to say I learned a lot! I truly enjoyed this book! I have no idea where people come up with these murder mysteries but they’re interesting and with this special author/friend, a blast to read!
Great addition to the Bucket List series! I love this author and all of her books. They are relatively short and fast, fun reads. I can't wait until book 4!
