The Devil, the Banshee and Me

Rate this book
In this frightfully funny novel by L.M. Falcone, somebody has moved into the creepy, abandoned cottage in the cemetery across the road from Will Trenom's house in small, sleepy Port Elgin. Will is on a perfectly normal errand on a perfectly normal day when he knocks on the cottage door. Suddenly, a crazy sumo wrestler with gold hoop earrings is chasing him through the cemetery while a strange man with long blond hair -- who calls himself the devil's nephew -- laughs. Then, late that night, Will hears crying in the cemetery and sees a ghostly old woman hovering above the gates. What kind of neighbors are these? What the devil is going on?

Do u know what's a banshee ? according to the book A banshee is a supernatural death messenger. the book the the devil and me is a science fiction book. this book is full or suspense and supernatural events.

*** Spoiler Alert***this book takes place in a neighborhood. this book talks about a boy named Will that gets to meet the devil. one day he found out that he had a neighbor named Megan. But he also found out that Megan was going to die so he decides to help her with the help of the devil. The characters in the book are Mr. and Mrs.,Noah /the devil,Will,Megan and MacGregor but the two main characters are Noah and Will. The conflict in this book would be person vs supernatural for example in this book they explain how a boy meets the devil but by the end of the book the devil is actually a angel. It also talks about him fighting against a banshee. i think that the them of the book is to be careful for what u wish for. Example in the book their is a girl named Elizabeth that took the come away from a banshee according to the book if u ever take the banshees come the banshee would have to grand you a wish Elizabeth was the the most beautiful woman in the whole village so Elizabeth wished for eternal life but she forgot to ask for eternal youth her head slowly lowered. u had to be careful for what you wished for because that wish could affect you in another way like Elizabeth.

I think that the major event that changed the characters was that the devil came into his life i think this because he was a nominal kid until the devil known as Noah that changed Will's life because Noah started to to show him and explain to him supernatural things. i also think that Megan had the biggest impact in Wills life. according to the book one day Will's spirit not his body but his spirit was able to go to Megan's hose with the help of Noah when he goes in Megan's hose he fines out that Megan was going to die so he helps her out and fighting with a banshee to avoid the banshee to take her to her death.

i was moved when Elizabeth gave her life to the banshee so the banshee didn't take Megan's life. according to the book when a banshee comes and comes your hair is because you were doing to die but if they drop the come and u get it the banshee gets to grand u a wish. So a banshee was coming Megan's hair until the banshee dropped her come and someone graved it. Megan and will taught that Megan's mom, Mrs. MacGregor was the one that took the come and wish to die Megan was crying and Crying because she taught that her mom just die until here mom started screaming because she was stuck under the house in a hole so the one that gave there life for Megan wasn't here mom it was Elizabeth.

from a scale to 1-5 i give this book a 5. I give this book a five because i really really liked it it was actually the first book that i don't want to stop reading. also i really like this type of books because there scare and has like this humor that makes me really like it i would recommend this book to science fiction readers and people that like reading something scare and interesting and mostly if u like mystery. i really enjoyed the book and i hope i can find more of this type of books

***THIS REVIEW IS GIVEN BY MY DAUGHTER, MICHAELA (age 10).***

The book I read was really, really great. The Devil, The Banshee, & Me is a middle school book that's so great that you will not want to never ever put it down ever & keep reading it!!

When you read this horror/comedy you'll laugh your butt off. It will also scare the crap out of you. After I read it, I was really scared even though I'm turning 11. I look for demons and a banshee even though my last name doesn't have Morano.

Read this book as a pre teen and remember pulling an all nighter to read it in one go. Great young adult book and I still think about this story.

The Devil, the Banshee and Me L.M. Falcone

Book overview

A young boy named Will lives with his zany parents. One day, he visits his mysterious and reclusive neighbor to get some eggs. When he knocks on the door, a sumo wrestler comes out of the house and starts to chase Will. A man laughs at Will getting chased by the sumo wrestler but doesn’t give Will any help. The next day, the man who laughed at Will rents a room at Will’s house. He calls himself Noah, the devils’ nephew! As Noah lives in Will’s house, strange things happen. A mysterious woman and her daughter move into the cemetery cottage, and Will sees a banshee in front of their house. Things get truly frightening and scary…

Personal response to book

This book is a funny and frightening story. I enjoyed reading this book because this is my first book about supernatural beings. Strange things happen in this story and the author, Falcone, creates tension in timings when the story seems to get boring. Falcone gives ideas about the world of banshees and other demons. Accordingly, the plots are fairly intense. The characters and dialogues are effective and lifelike. However, the plot is not legitimate or believable because it’s not about ordinary things that happen in our life; also, I couldn’t make personal connection with the story with this strange things happening in the story. I like the sense of humor of Falcone and her effort to keep readers involved. However, constant using of humor and punch lines sometimes distract attention from the novel’s meaningful theme.

Respond to a professional review

- “Although a bit put off by the title, once I begun the story I almost couldn't put it down! The book flows easily, and the mystery facing Will kept me glued to the pages.”

I strongly agree with this reviewer that I kept turning the pages. Whenever I had time to read this during English class, I only read this book. Also, even though I finished one chapter, the book makes me curious about the next chapter. Falcone did a really good job on the flows of the story and connections between the chapters.

- “It was not a scary book, and although a bit dark at times, the mix of funny situations and troubles was well balanced. The series of events made Will's problems, although very serious, thoroughly enjoyable.”

I exactly felt the same as this reviewer. The background of this book gets darker as I turned the pages, but not scary. The mood was bit close to gloomy and shadowy. The plot is peppered with humors and funny. This book is solemn and pleasant at the same time.

- “My son just turned seven, & this book is appropriate for his reading level (which is 4th- or 5th-grade), but not for his maturity level. He read several chapters in one day & seemed to be enjoying himself very much, but he had a hard time falling asleep, &--once he did--he had nightmares.”

This book was not really scary to me, but I found it often spooky. However, this book can be scary to little kids and one of the reviewers said her son had nightmares when he read this book. Therefore, I would recommend this book for teenagers.

This book is about a boy named Will, who has a lot of supernatural occurrences happen to him. He encounters strange things at his neighbors, then all of a sudden he has the devil's nephew staying at his family's house.

I think this book would be good for lit circles in the fall (in time for Halloween). If students are getting bored of realistic fiction, I think that this might draw them back into reading as well.

Will Trenom's ordinary life gets turned upside down when a man claiming to be the nephew of the Devil comes to stay at his parents' bed and breakfast. Adding to the general strangeness, Will sees a banshee outside the house across the street. The banshee's presence indicates that someone is about to die. The story takes off as Will investigates to find out for whom the banshee is here, and plots to stop it. L.M. Falcone has created a fast-paced and original story that captures the imagination. The momentum of the story will keep the reader riveted through the climax. There is a good mix of humor strewn through out the book so that it isn't overly heavy or dark, and Falcone fits in a timeless message: be careful of what you wish for for you might just get it. Appropriate for children aged 9-12, The Devil, the Banshee and Me is a recommended purchase for elementary school and public libraries. Contains: possession, drowning, frank discussion of death, mention of the Devil.

The Title of the book is The Devil, The Banshee and Me.The author is L.M Falcone. The book is about a boy named Will Trenom, who apparently meets the nephew of the devil and a banshee.

I liked this book because it had a lot of twists and turns. Also because it had stuff of the supernatural in it. Examples are the devil's nephew, demons, banshees, immortals and more. I liked how it was laid out like the events of the tory because the situation kept changing as you went along. The worst thing about this book was it was to short i wished it was longer because some things were quite rushed.

The Characters were pretty interesting like Noah(the devils nephew) could make wills spirit leave his body so he could go places without anyone knowing. How he could shoot ice cream thorough his brain making him relaxed. Also how he could teleport him to anywhere in the world. The Banshee was also interesting because if you stole there comb they have to grant a wish.

This is a charming children's book - as charming as any book concerning demons and banshees can be, anyway. The strength of this book is not necessarily the plot but the story-telling. Falcone uses a great deal of subtle humor that makes the book entertaining (for any age level) and relieves some of the suspense at the climax, but don't worry, you'll still be unable to put the book down. Falcone's knowledge of banshee folklore is evident (she's clearly done her research) so I would recommend this book for anyone interested in Irish folklore, horror stories, or just good books for kids in general.

This book was a quick read for me, and as soon as I started the first chapter, I was pulled in by L.M Falcone great use of humor. I felt though, that this book took awhile to get started and even though it was funny, it started to get boring about halfway though the book. I would recommend this book, but not to people my age. Some of the humor was a little immature, and when I got bored and stopped reading for awhile, younger kids would read through to find out what happens next. I felt I did not have that desire with this book.

meh. this one is an ok horror/spooky story about a boy who becomes involved with his next-door neighbors and their struggle to save themselves from death predicted by a banshee. it’s a little thin in spots (why is this particular young boy so crucial to their survival? why is there a sumo wrestler in the first scene?) and i just wasn’t that enchanted. but then again, i don’t particularly like those types of books in general anyway, so maybe i’m biased.

A city teenager who watched way too much TV came to New Zealand to visit his young aunt who recently lost her husband in a sea-faring accident. The story line interweaves two strands: one an affectional village life and the dreadful depression of the young woman, another real or imagined experiences in the icy, foggy island with strange happenings. It is a good book -- full of vivid actions and conversions -- for adult learners of French as well.

When i started reading this book, I was pulled in and was very interested in L.M Falcone's good use of humor. Although immature at points, it proved to be an ok book. Along the middle area of the book, I found it to be eventless and a tad boring. It was ok.
