Tracy Hogg€™s sensitivity and ability to read infants€™ cries, coos and assorted baby noises led to her bestselling Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. Now, Top Tips of the Baby Whisperer distills her wisdom into a handy-size edition.
Tracy Hogg obtained her nursing degree in England, specializing in maternity and neonatal care. Her uncanny ability to understand and calm babies led to her nickname "The Baby Whisperer." In 1997, she founded Baby Technique, through which she consults with parents individually, organizes and teaches group classes, and provides nanny training and referrals. She is the mother of two daughters. Tracy Hogg died of melanoma in November 2004.
With two kids, I didn't want to take the time to read the entire Baby Whisperer book but this book is a good overview. (Though, damn, I should have really read my review because be flexible. Babies are tricky.)
The three main things I got from the book: Routine! Baby 2 was five months and his sleep was getting more and more screwy (at its worst, Baby 2 was waking every hour). I realized he needed to move from a 3-hour routine to a 4-hour routine. Once we got into the E.A.S.Y. 4-hour routine, we started to get more sleep, whew!
Related to this, I started really doing a bedtime ritual with Baby (fresh diaper, reading, sitting quietly for a while or carrying in arms depending on mood, then crib). I didn't have a good ritual down because I was trying to juggle my two kids, but I realized how important this was to Baby 2 so now I make time for it no matter what (thank goodness for my patient big girl).
"Don't feel sorry for your child. You're doing P.U./P.D. to help her become an independent sleeper, which is a great gift. If you're tempted to quit, ask yourself, 'What will the situation be if I cave in?' You'll be right back where you started.
I do really believe that sleep is something babies need to learn, and you must teach them, and sometimes it's a tough lesson. I remind myself of this quote from the book when Baby's crying and I want to give in. But I don't! And two seconds later he's sleeping and I feel so relieved.
I'm only giving this 3 stars, though, because Hogg's pick up/put down method does not work for Baby 2. I reread Ferber's book and found that with Hogg's E.A.S.Y. routine and Ferber's sleep training together works for him. Now at nine months, he's taking two naps (for one or two hours each) without too much effort from me and falls asleep fantastic at night too (still wakes once between 4:30 and 6, nurses, then back asleep...sometimes. Again, be flexible!!).
Good book, pretty much an abbreviated version of the full Secrets of the Baby Whisperer book. Personally I preferred the full version, complete with the humor and anecdotes, but my husband was happy with the short version where he got the idea quickly and it didn't feel as heavy.
