Can a thief save a corrupt society?

Ten years removed from the one-hundred year curse for failing the Eldritch Trials, the Vulpiians feel like they can finally move on from that murky part of their history. Yet an undercurrent of unease and darkness still lurks in the crevices of their minds and society. Things aren’t as they portray, and nobody knows this better than Liekki.

Liekki is no stranger to the darker side of Vulpiian society thanks to her alter ego. As renowned thief, Blaze, Liekki, gets to live her best life devoid of political entanglements. A menace to Vulpiian society, she knows their world is just a dreamscape that hides the true horror underneath.

When lightning turns night into day, all of Vulpo knows what it means. It’s time to prove their worth again. When Liekki is selected to represent them in the Trials, it causes hysteria, but the decision is irreversible. She is their champion.

Once she steps through the door of her house, there’s no turning back. What will she find out about herself? Will it be enough to save the Vulpiians from the corruption that could doom them all?

It's been ten years since the Vulpiians 100 year curse ended. The curse every race is subjected to if they fail the Eldritch Trials. But there is still darkness everywhere in the land of Vulpo and no one knows this better than Liekki. Youngest daughter of a noble family, she spends much of her time in the guise of Blaze, a master thief. When she is caught and outed, this causes anger among the three tribes of Vulpo. Then the Mother Goddess signals a trial and choses Liekki as her newest champion. All the anger turns to hysteria and Liekki must run to save herself and try to make it to Elderton before her people force a new champion into the trials, by killing Liekki. And all the while Liekki wonders if her people are really worth fighting for.

Another great book added to the Eldritch world. Having briefly met Liekki in a couple of other books it was nice to finally see her story. She is a very sympathetic character and watching her being torn between fighting for her people or not made her a great FMC. Liekki is also very resourceful so she made a great champion. I was, however, a little disappointed that we didn't see more of Efrim’s story. All that build up of an amazing secret background but it felt so unfinished. Overall though I did enjoy the book and it was a good addition to the series.

Good story about self worth

This was a story about a troubled vulpi named Liekki who as her alternate ego Blaze created chaos as a thief. Even though she was born to the head family in clan night.
Vulpo is called to enter the Eldritch trials and in some mysterious way Liekki is chosen even though she has been deemed unworthy.
She is sent through difficult challenges just to get to the trails. As a strange darkness expands over her lands. Can she, a disgraced Vulpi be trusted to save her people.
The story was a good telling of how ones treatment can alter their life's direction and self worth but it was slow and at times seemed to veer off task.
I would have liked more explanation about the darkness and how it came to be and affect certain members of the clans. It also would been nice to have a follow up to the Drymens to see if their situation changed.
Overall it was a good story and it was nice to see how the trials impacted Liekka's self awareness and create a new path for her to follow.

Redemption

This was one of the best redemption stories I have read. Not only did Liekki (fmc) have a great character arc, so did those both close to her as well as her people as a whole.
