It's been ten years since the Vulpiians 100 year curse ended. The curse every race is subjected to if they fail the Eldritch Trials. But there is still darkness everywhere in the land of Vulpo and no one knows this better than Liekki. Youngest daughter of a noble family, she spends much of her time in the guise of Blaze, a master thief. When she is caught and outed, this causes anger among the three tribes of Vulpo. Then the Mother Goddess signals a trial and choses Liekki as her newest champion. All the anger turns to hysteria and Liekki must run to save herself and try to make it to Elderton before her people force a new champion into the trials, by killing Liekki. And all the while Liekki wonders if her people are really worth fighting for.
Another great book added to the Eldritch world. Having briefly met Liekki in a couple of other books it was nice to finally see her story. She is a very sympathetic character and watching her being torn between fighting for her people or not made her a great FMC. Liekki is also very resourceful so she made a great champion. I was, however, a little disappointed that we didn't see more of Efrim’s story. All that build up of an amazing secret background but it felt so unfinished. Overall though I did enjoy the book and it was a good addition to the series.
