Carla is a down-on-her-luck witch whose skills aren’t up to snuff when it comes to both magic and her work. Although her main business is running an apothecary that’s been in decline ever since her master passed away, she also runs a divorce agency on the side (even though all of her clients seem to reconcile, for some reason).
One day, Carla receives a request she can’t refuse. The queen herself sends Thane, a knight who makes no effort to hide his distaste for witches, to pass along her message. Carla isn’t a fan of knights herself, leading the pair to fight like cats and dogs...but maybe first impressions aren’t everything!
This is cute, even if enemies-to-lovers isn't my favorite romance trope. Poor Carla needs to readjust her thinking, however - she's not a "divorce agent," she's a very successful marriage counselor.
Carla is a witch who cannot craft all the medicine her old teacher could, and as a result the apothecary is suffering. Luckily she can change her appearance, which gives her the ability to help women discern the motivations of their husbands and try to get a divorce. It is a job Carla is not too happy with because she keeps failing and still getting paid. Then a Royal Knight arrives in her shop, apparently the queen needs her help and while witches have a lot of freedom in the kingdom, they cannot refuse a request by the queen.
The world building and characters of this story are intriguing. It follows the otome game genre plot, except the MC is asked to investigate events, and the magic of the setting is not typical for most light novel fantasy series either. The MC is likable even if her obsessions with success for a divorce is a bit silly, and she needs to perform legwork. My biggest complaint is that the story feels a bit rushed, or at least, the main events are resolved really quickly, especially compared to the build up to said events.
Still, it was a decently entertaining read, different enough from the typical stories in the genre to have kept me hooked.
Carla is a witch running a small apothecary shop--but her talents aren't good enough to keep the business afloat without her side job. Unfortunately, her attempt to broker divorces keeps failing spectacularly . . . although all her clients also seem happy enough to recommend her to others. Then the latest case forces her to work with a knight on an issue at the academy.
This was pretty good. Carla's a very strong-willed individual, who has a lot of unresolved anger at the knights for various things that happened when she was younger. Thane, similarly, is a knight who really can't stand witches (which is how you know the two of them are being set up for a romance, ugh).
I do enjoy their arguments, though. Neither of them is mean-spirited, just stubborn, and both of them can prioritize the mission over whatever disagreement they might happen to have. Carla is frustrated because her attempt to help people divorce only results in them getting back together.
It did feel a little contrived to have the latest case play out into a happy ending, as the prince's logic was really bad (though it helps that other characters are telling him he was stupid).
Overall, though, this had some interesting magic, strong characters, and a pretty snappy story. I rate this book Recommended.
I read the pre-pub that was available on the J-Novel website for subscribers.
It’s a nice story premise, a twist on the broken engagement. Sometimes the hero's and heroine's sniping at each other is a bit much. They both have tragic backstories that make them sympathetic but also explains why they dislike each other so much.
The heroine is a little stupid at times, but on a whole it was entertaining.
It’s light and entertaining, though the situations where she’s trying to initiate the “divorce” talk are weirdly intimate - like how would anyone even share that kind of detail for her to have such an in-depth conversation with their husband?
