To begin with, there are two versions to this book - the Ovetganna one and the Khugayda one.
I remember enjoying this book from the second reading only. First time I read it I was struggling to accept the new format of story, the freer style of narration, compared to that of Echo series. This book is detached from any series. Although the protagonist is the same, he behaves slightly differently and hardly he gives any links to his Echo existence.
I know what this novel reminds me of - it's Alice in Wonderland. Alice (in this case Max) gets into another world, an incredibly ridiculous one. There she/he starts the journey from one crazy character or place to another, searching for the way back home. The Caterpillar, then the Hatter and the alchemists, then the pirates...
This is fun! Especially if we remember that 10 years after that Max Frei has written a Pinocchio type of story as well. Now that I think of it, he might have already written a Wizard of Oz type of story...
