Beauty and Her Beast

Rate this book
Dan "Mince" Mincini knows love isn't for him, but can he resist the wounded beauty in need of his protection?

Dan:

I'm used to women flinching when they see my scarred face. When I open the door for Ljuba, I'm ready for it, but instead of fear or disgust, her eyes are filled with trust, like I'm her safe harbor in a sea full of sharks.

When I notice the bags under her eyes, Ljuba admits to having nightmares. She won't tell me who haunts her dreams, but it doesn't matter. I'll guard her all night long if I have to.

Then, I learn about the anonymous calls and appoint myself as her personal bodyguard.

I'd take a bullet to protect this beauty, as long as she kisses the pain away.

Ljuba:

I had a handle on my nightmares until the calls started. Now, I can't sleep. Desperate to get away from it all, I decide to stay with my friend in a well-guarded house with personal security.

The moment I see Dan, I know he's safe. He knows what flavor of food the stray kitten prefers, for crying out loud. He could never turn into a monster. Unlike some people I know.

The more time we spend together, the more secrets I spill. Instead of judging me, Dan showers me with gifts–a bracelet of his own making here, a trip to the book village there.

I spent my life living in the past, wondering what my life would've been like if everything hadn’t fallen apart. With Dan's arms around me, I want to live in the here and now.

But my past is knocking, and I’m not sure Dan can save me this time.

Forever Broken

First off the author failed to provide a trigger warning so,I will. This story references child molestation, suicide attempts and rape.
This was a story about two broken people who find an escape with each other. Dan was a severely scarred man who was kept insecure because of people's reactions to his face. He was also estranged from his family.
Ljuba was a young woman who suffered traumatic events in her childhood, which she says is why she has never had a relationship.
Although this book is supposed to be about Ljuba being stalked, the story continually veers off. It brings in the two other sisters and what is going on with them and the best friend and her drama. The issue of the stalker is brought up sporadically, as it had been forgotten.
The concept of Ljuba is contradictory and nonsensical. For someone who is supposed to be so traumatized by her past, the forwardness of the things she says to Dan doesn't match up with the innocent, hurt person she is supposed to be. Perhaps this was the author's way to add heat. Also, why is no one trying to get her help for her nightmares!?! She is supposed to be so traumatized that she has to sleep outdoors, on a balcony. How about getting her to a therapist. The only time someone says it is in joking because she is eating a different ice cream than what they are used to. Dan said a therapist helped him with his nightmares yet he never tries to get her to see one. I guess he likes her dependent on him. He may think he will lose her if she is alright.
By the end, there is no character growth, just two broken people depending on each other.

Needs trigger warnings. Big, highlighted warnings in the blurb. Ljuba's past involves molestation and multiple assaults by her adopted father. She's got a stalker, too. And there definitely needs to be suicide attempt warnings. None of this is mentioned anywhere before you find it while reading. The story itself is ok. Little trite, little tropey, and a lot of ridiculousness in the bedroom. No one goes from 0 to full on back door play without lube their first time. Especially not with a proportional guy that's six and a half feet tall. And then shouts for harder. And she has issues with him over her on the bed but then that is immediately forgotten in another scene where she has not even a blink of distress. The dialogue is a little stiff in some places and weirdly offbeat in others. No mention of any accent. The timeline is vague and I'm not sure how long they've been in America, though. This also reads like several books came before it but nothing is numbered to keep it in any kind of order. People are mentioned like you're supposed to know who they are. And one guy is supposed to be pursuing another sister (there's apparently a story where they're pretending to be together to help him get custody but they're actually falling for each other) yet asks about a new hire like he's interested in her. I'm hoping the author just flubbed names. Some other details got tangled so it's possible. It needs a good editing, too, as there are grammatical errors galore.

Beauty and Her Beast is a contemporary, erotic romance with light touches of mystery and suspense from L. P. Guleva that’s written in dual-first-person POV. It appears to be the first in a series about a trio of sisters. However, there is only one site I could find, Kobo, that has a series title listed as Romancing Wounded Heart (no, that’s not a typo on my part). In any case, this one is about Ljuba (which according to Google is pronounced Loo-bah), who, along with her two older sisters, was orphaned and later adopted, but her stepfather sexually abused all of them, leaving them with emotional scars. Lately Ljuba has been receiving anonymous phone calls from a mouth breather, which have left her rather fearful. Her friend, Gulya, is married to a wealthy man who has enemies. Therefore, she has a state-of-the-art security system and a 24/7 bodyguard detail, so she suggests that Ljuba come stay with her. At her friend’s house, Ljuba meets Dan, a huge guy covered in scars, who is the head of Gulya’s security and co-owner of the company. Ljuba has always had a hard time warming up to men, but despite his fearsome appearance, she never feels afraid of Dan. Something about him immediately puts her at ease, and when he starts doing little things for her like making her a bracelet to cover her own scars and taking her book shopping, her heart begins to melt. They quickly fall for one another and start thinking about a future together. But when Ljuba’s stalker steps up his efforts, Dan will have to save her from a terrifying fate.

Ljuba’s parents died when she was young, so she and her sisters spent some time in an orphanage. They were later adopted, but her stepfather father abused them. Eventually her oldest sister was able to escape and come back to save the two younger ones, but the story is a bit short on details of how that happened. In any case, Ljuba has been wary of men ever since and has trouble sleeping indoors. She works as a cook at a diner, but lately she’s been receiving sexually harassing phone calls that have put her on edge. Therefore, she happily accepts her friend’s offer to come stay at her “fortress.” From the moment Ljuba meets Dan, she feels safe around him. When he treats a stray kitten on the property gently and makes her a pretty bracelet, she just knows she can trust him. Sometimes Dan sees her awake late at night on the security cameras and comes by to visit, and when he finds out about the stalker, Dan makes arrangements to take some time away from guarding Ljuba’s friend to look after her instead, leading to a rapid deepening of their relationship. He even puts his own life at risk to protect her, but when the stalker comes after her, Ljuba fears Dan might not save her in time. Ljuba is a very sweet woman who has been through a lot. I like that she’s so accepting of Dan, scars and all, and I was glad that she’d finally found someone with whom she could feel safe. However, her reasons for trusting him so quickly perhaps weren’t as strong as they could have been. Yes, he’s a nice guy and all, but I couldn’t help feeling like Ljuba’s past trauma was a little too easily overcome.

Dan served in the army and spent time in some sort of war zone, though it isn’t specified where. He and his buddies were captured and tortured, leaving him with significant scarring on his face and body. He’d been engaged, but his fiancee left him, unable to deal with his scars, and he hasn’t been close to any of his family for a long time. After leaving the service, he and his former military friends banded together to start a security company. Their business is thriving, so Dan is doing well financially, though he still lives in a crummy apartment and hasn’t yet made a move to do something with the money he’s making beyond reinvesting in the company. When he meets Ljuba, he’s instantly smitten, but he recognizes the haunted look in her eyes. Dan quickly gains her trust and decides to appoint himself as her guardian when he learns about the phone stalker. As he gets to know Ljuba better, he sees a strong woman who is a survivor but who hasn’t lost her gentle spirit. She’s everything he’s been looking for in a woman and the fact that she isn’t the least bit bothered by his scars only makes him love her more. He doesn’t hesitate to put his own life on the line to keep her safe, but when the stalker kidnaps Ljuba, he finds himself in a race against time to save her. Dan is tough as nails to have survived all that he did, but despite that, he’s not really the hardened warrior one might expect. He may look scary on the outside, but he has a gooey center that’s all sweetness and kindness, treating Ljuba very gently. For that reason, I did very much like him, even though he’s perhaps a bit underdeveloped as a character.

I’m a total sucker for romances inspired by fairy tales, with Beauty and the Beast being a particular favorite, so it’s not the least bit surprising that Beauty and Her Beast would end up on my TBR list. I did enjoy that aspect of the story. I love that Ljuba could look past Dan’s scars to see the kind man underneath, and Dan is totally committed to protecting Ljuba and doing everything he can to make her feel safe. I also love all the thoughtful little things he does for her. However, despite my appreciation for all those parts of the story, I came away from reading it feeling like something was missing. At just over 200 pages, the book is on the shorter side, barely qualifying as a novel. There’s just enough to the characterizations to be reasonably satisfying, but they’re a little short on the details, which could have really brought Dan and Ljuba fully to life. By a similar token, their relationship is basically an insta-love story, developing so rapidly that’s it’s rather lacking in depth. They go from meeting, to friendship, to sleeping together, to talking about moving in together within maybe a week or two, which was just too fast to be entirely believable, especially after all that Ljuba had been through. She’s honest with him from the start about not being sure if she can even have sex without freaking out, but then they actually succeed on only their second try with her having little trouble with it beyond not being able to do it in a bed. Then she turns into an instant sex kitten. And don’t get me started on them having anal sex twice in a row without lube. Ouch! There’s a little excitement when assassins come after Ljuba’s friend when they’re together, and of course, when the stalker makes his move on Ljuba. But even those events were pretty predictable and over rather quickly. There are also a lot of typos and grammatical errors that could be somewhat distracting and that should have been caught by a good proofreader.

Bottom line, the sweetness of the characters and the story combined with the Beauty and the Beast theme are the main reasons I still gave the book four stars. I also saw a lot of potential in the story, and if it had been developed more fully into a longer book, I think it probably would have gotten keeper status from me. Still, it was good enough to make me curious about Ljuba’s sisters’ stories. Her oldest sister, Vera, is in a fake dating relationship with Dan’s friend and business partner, Sean, so I might pick up their book, Dangerously Fake Engagement, at some point.

Note: While the love scenes in this book don’t overwhelm the story like they typically might in an erotic romance and detail-wise are more on par with traditionally steamy romances, I’m still categorizing it as such, because it does contain anal sex, which could be objectionable to sensitive readers.

Everything about this is basic in the extreme, the writing ability, the story, the characters. If I could give less than 1 star I would. He gives her flowers more often that anything else. The writing was also sub par, with bad grammar, spelling mistakes, wrong words and even the cover shows how basic this is, because he's supposed to be badly scarred on his face and yet the author hasn't bothered to add scars or get a cover designer to do it. The sex scene was so basic, just a few sentences long. just too over the top and unrealistic as well as very slow.

what did I waste my time on?

The characters were very unlikable. The story was all over the place. The dialogue was horrific. She goes from being afraid to have sex to just being fine. Hated hated hated it.

For starters I really enjoyed this book and would love more books like it it’s got plenty of mystery and who doesn’t love a bodyguard romance story! As I read this book I couldn’t help but wonder if it’s part of a series but couldn’t find anything to lead to that conclusion. There is a lot going on with the side characters and I would love a story for each of them. This book could be considered a long book but in my opinion very interesting and entertaining easily story to read! I loved it especially the ending was amazing to awesomely page turner and unpredictable experience! The main characters have both been through so much in both their lives and I love how they help each other out of the darkness they are perfect for each other! And how both very strong and don’t let their pasts define them! :) I’m hoping for more by this author she a wonderful job with this book!.

This is a new author for me and I have enjoyed reading this story. I am assuming that this book is either part of a series or is connected to previous books as there are characters who seem to already have had their stories told, or at least partially told, as the story unfolded I picked up on clues here and there of what had happened between them.

I believed in the connection and chemistry between Dan and Ljuba, the way they understood each other and gave each other just what they needed was written well. The story held my interest throughout, I saw some things coming and others I didn't. I thought the balance between dark and light in this worked and I enjoyed getting to know all the characters who featured.

Wonderful!

Trigger warning: Torture, abuse, and attempted suicide are mentioned though thankfully not in great detail. Please don’t read this and give a negative review if you know it will upset you. However, there’s not a thing I would change, and that is saying something. Stories like this give hope that maybe we will find that special someone who will help you with your baggage and share theirs. Wonderful characters, both primary and secondary. Both Ljuba and Dan deserve happiness after what they’ve suffered. They are survivors and sweet despite the evil they encountered. Absolutely adore Dan! Amazing, thoughtful, romantic gifts #swoon and most didn’t require a lot of money.

I really enjoyed this story. It really had a beauty and beast feel to it but with a modern day twist. It read more like 2 characters coming together and getting a chance at happiness despite the bad in their past. But it was a bit more light and funny and did not dwell on the bad things but the happiness that could be theirs. Add in some drama and fun characters and I got a cute fun steamy story. Made me laugh and sigh but I liked it.

I love a good Beauty and the Beast retelling but this one missed the mark for me a bit. The characters were ok, nothing super special and I felt like I was missing a bit of context on them. The story itself felt like it had no direction for the longest time, especially with the stalker side plot. Then when it did start to pick up it was over as soon as it started. I was ultimately left feeling just super unsatisfied with it.

This was a story of a man that thinks he’ll never find love as he’s got scars on his face, But he meets someone, Ljuba, who needs help. She had nightmares and now phone calls that is haunting her. He’s going to protect her as she brings that side out in him! But as they get closer so does her monsters! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Good book

This is the first book I read by this author. I loved the characters and their chemistry but while reading the story, I had the feeling that this was a series and I missed the first few books. I checked before starting the book didn’t find any previous books. I still feel like I missed something that would have clarified the other characters in the book.

OMG! This is the best retelling of Beauty and the Beast I've read. This is the first book I've read by this author and I love her writing. The characters are well-written and fleshed out. They carry you along in their relationship. I couldn't put it down and hope there are stories for the other characters.

Steamy and suspenseful! I enjoyed this take on the classic tale by LP Guleva. Ljuba has led a tragic life so far and she finds safety and solace when she meets Dan. Great read that kept me glued to the pages.

Wow!

I loved Beauty and the Beast as a child and still love the variations of available now! This book, though, is very different. The real beast of the story is not what you would expect! But Beauty does get her beauty and … well I‘ll leave you find out! So worth a read!

I probably would have enjoyed this book more if I had read the previous stories first. It was a good story with likeable characters but it ended very abruptly.
