Welcome to Iron Oak Farms and the home of the Appalachian STAR search and rescue team in the mountains of Mallie, Kentucky. It’s a place for new beginnings and second chances at life and love, with rugged, troubled men, characters you know and love from the Bluegrass Dynasty series and Susan Stoker’s Eagle Point Search and Rescue series, and plenty of steam.
Deanndra Hall is a working writer living in far western Kentucky. A free spirit and chronic jokester, she and her partner of over 30 years enjoy visiting their two adult children and their partners and playing with their three crazy little dogs. When she's not writing, Deanndra can be found kayaking, working out at the gym, cooking something healthy, or reading. After writing for business, industry, academia, and non-profits for years and having her work credited to others, she jumped into the fiction realm, particularly erotic fiction and erotica, and had so much fun she never looked back. Look for her on Twitter and Facebook and on her website and blog.
A DESPERATE MAN is the first instalment in Deanndra Hall’s contemporary, adult APPALACHIAN STAR erotic, romantic suspense series set in the Special Forces: Operation Alpha series featuring characters first introduced in the books and series by Susan Stoker. This is forty-three year old, former US Army helicopter pilot Patrick ‘Patch’ Scott , and thirty-four year old, miniature model/diorama maker Penny Markley’s story line.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Patch and Penny) A DESPERATE MAN focuses on the start up of Appalachian STAR, search and rescue operation that hires former inmates from US prisons. Patrick ‘Patch’ Scott was forced into retirement when gunfire blew out the windshield of the helicopter he was flying, imbedding glass into our hero’s eye. Opening up Appalachian STAR in the mountains of Mallie, Kentucky gives Patrick Scott, and several former inmates a second chance at a life and a career but the team at Appalachian STAR are about to get their first big test when a rainstorm all but destroys most of the Kentucky Valley. Penny Markley is a divorcee, on the run from her abusive ex, hoping to restart her career as a miniature model maker but Penny never expected to come face to face with former US soldier turned business owner Patrick Scott, the man with whom Penny will fall in love. As Penny and Patrick’s relationship turns into something more, Mallie, Kentucky will face a catastrophic disaster pushing the men at Appalachian STAR into their first big test at a rescue operation. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Penny and Patrick, and the potential fall-out when Penny’s past forces our heroine on the run, once again.
The relationship between Penny and Patrick is one of immediate attraction but Patrick continues to battle between head and heart in the wake of the demise of his marriage, and his inability to visit his adult children. Career came before family, and in this Patrick fears history repeating itself, and refuses to get involved with anyone else. Penny has known the terror of an abusive relationship, barely surviving her last encounter with her ex-husband but Penny is hoping for a new start, possibly with the man that calls to her heart. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including several from a number of Deanndra Hall’s Bluegrass Bravery instalments, and books by Susan Stoker. We are introduced to Miles ‘ Bear’ McMillan; Hollywood, ghost, Priest, Reboot, Paddy and Bulldog, as well as several townspeople in and around Mallie, Kentucky. Hollywood’s story is next.
A DESPERATE MAN is a story of second chances, of a sort, for two people who never expected to find love again. The fast paced premise is intriguing with a detailed look at search and rescue, and helicopter information; the romance is seductive and provocative; the characters are lively, captivating and real.
A Desperate Man is the first in a new series that puts a twist to your normal military or protector suspense novel. Patch is a medically discharged military helicopter pilot who wants to make a difference not only in the small Kentucky community he lives in, but in the lives of former prisoners who are not always given a chance to show how they've changed in the form of adequate jobs. The Appalachian STAR is a search and rescue team that has a main job of doing various crafts: sword making, decorative glass, leatherwork, and other types of work that, if called out, can be put aside temporarily to search for and rescue people lost.
Patch is a deep character with lots of hangups from his past, military and ex-wife. Penny has escaped from an abusive husband and is living in her grandmothers home in Kentucky. They meet when she is moving in, but dance around each other and their fears. When they get there, they are hot together.
Loved this story, interwoven with teams from the author's other series and Susan Stoker's Eagle Point Rescue series. You do not need to read any of the other series to enjoy the book as the characters are explained enough to get the gist of who they are. I have not read the stories of the Bluegrass series yet. AT the end of the book, Deanndra directs you to where their stories can be found, should you be interested.
I am looking forward to reading the stories of the men Patch is leading and helping. We get enough of a tease to be intrigued with their pasts.
A Desperate Man is the first book in Deanndra Hall’s new series Appalachian STAR. This is a military romantic suspense novel with amazing characters and a fantastic storyline which is also part of the Special Forces: Operation Alpha series.
Reinvention leads to new beginnings. After a career ending injury and losing his family, Patrick “Patch” Scott, moves to Iron Oak Farms in Mallie, Kentucky to build a home to rehabilitate prisoners after incarceration. Appalachian STAR, a search and rescue team was created to give all of them purpose. Penny Markley, has moved back to her grandmother’s house in Mallie to start her life over, away and in hiding from her dangerous ex-husband. When Patch and Penny meet they quickly realize that their connection has the potential to be so much more and slowly begin exploring a relationship. But with the stresses of running the farm, their busy SAR missions and Penny’s volatile ex, will this couple ever get their happily ever after? Read it and find out!
This is a new series and each book it meant to be read as a standalone. There are various connections and links to storylines and characters from the Bluegrass Dynasty series and Susan Stoker’s Eagle Point Search and Rescue series. But reading these are not necessary as Hall does an amazing job explaining relevant details. I can’t wait for the next addition in this amazing new series.

Great start to this series. Another search and rescue operation. These guys, while Patch and some of the team are vets, they are all (except Patch) getting their new chance as ex-cons. The compound has workshops for each of the guys to hone and produce their amazing products from swords to glass blowing.
They are not only rescue teams learning to work as a team and become a family, but they are also learning to assimilate back into society. Watching their progress is amazing. Seeing them open up to each other and do such a great job.
But what would the story be without romance? Not that there are a lot of single women around. Patch meets Penny when she needs a bit of a side-of-the-road rescue. Their feelings are slow to develop but the chemistry is there. They just need to open up and ignore their problems. He has an ex-wife with a new husband and his kids are with her so he seldom sees them. She has an ex too, however, he is deadly. She's run from him and his death threats. Will he find her? If so, will she be able to fight him? Will Patch and the team be there for her?
The book is filled with great characters, amazing world-building, plenty of steam, and danger. The author never fails to deliver.
Patch is a military vet who has built something special in Kentucky for prisoners to get a fresh start after they pay their debt to society, and man I loved that about him. Penny's grandmother left her a place so when Penny needs to hide from an abusive ex-husband, she lands in Patch's neck of the woods. From the first time they come face to face, Penny is taken with Patch, while he's noticed her but doing his best to not let anything happen, and that was the part where I found myself unhappy with him to be honest. He wasn't the nicest to pretty Penny despite the fact they're drawn to each other, but I did understand a tad bit since he has demons from his former marriage. I loved the men that Patch took in, as every one of them was interesting (even the growly Bear), and I hope that all of them get their own stories (hint hint). Patch & Penny have finally started seeing each other when her ex finally figures out where she is so at this point, the twists came out of the gate with a bang, and now it's a race against time to find said scumbag before he finds Penny. I LOVE Deanndra Hall's writing, and I hope I never have to go without her books so yeah, I'm super excited for this new series, and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
"A Desperate Man" is a good addition to the "Special Forces: Operation Alpha" series. This book follows the story of Patch and Penny. It takes place at the Iron Oak Farms, the home of the Appalachian STAR search and rescue team in the mountains of Mallie, Kentucky.
Hall's writing is engaging and heartfelt, drawing readers into the story from the very first page. The characters are well-developed and relatable, with flaws and vulnerabilities that make them feel like real people.
The romance between Patch and the heroine, Penny, is both sweet and steamy, with plenty of chemistry between the two characters. Their relationship develops gradually, allowing readers to become invested in their story and root for their happy ending.
Overall, "A Desperate Man" is a fantastic addition to the "Special Forces: Operation Alpha" series. It is a touching and heartfelt romance novel that will keep readers engaged from beginning to end. If you're a fan of romance with a touch of drama and emotion, then this book is definitely worth a read.

I knew almost from page one that A Desparate Man was going to be special and the more I read the more I knew that I was not wrong. The premise of men whose lives had taken a wrong enough turn that landed them in prison and are now trying to rebuild their lives and become productive members of society struck just the right chord with me. Add in the excitement of a search and rescue operati[ns, a brutal ex bent on revenge, a slow burn romance, members of Susan Stoker's Eagle Point Search and Rescue and the Walters clan from Ms. Hall's Blue Grass Dynasty dropping in.... you've definitely got a winner in your hands. I am already intrigued by the men from Iron Oak Farms and look forward to their individual stories.
Love has not been kind to Patrick "Patch" Scott or Penny Markley. Meeting in a small out of the way Kentucky town just may prove serendipitous. As their attraction grows, there are stumbling blocks, some forthright conversations and lots of sizzling encounters as these two do find they love they so richly deserve.
This is the first book in the Appalachian STAR series. I loved reading this story. It is a book about second chances in many ways. Patch is divorced with two kids and is afraid to try again. He has taken on the task of helping former ex- cons. He is determined to get these men reintegrated into society in the mountains of Kentucky. He has a huge task to get these men trained and form a cohesive unit trained for search and rescue. Penny is on the run from her abusive ex husband. He has said he will not let her go. When Patch and Penny meet, they are attracted but wary. They decided to try to see where things could go between them. They have a huge task in front of them to get the HEA they deserve. Get this book ASAP and find out what happens. Sorry, no spoilers. I received this ARC and here is my honest review.
A fantastic reviting romance thriller. A man reinventing himself, medically discharged from the military, divorced and minimal contact from his kids. He forms a group of men who are ex convicts who make swords, their sleeves and blow glass. Also Search, train and rescue. He meets a sexy woman who is divorced and hiding from her abusive ex. A first Patch wants to stay away from Penny but is too subtracted to her. His group become family except one tries to keep them arms length away. This group is funded by the governor and Tony Walters. They get more training for roping down the mountains and a helicopter for search and rescue. Unfortunately Penny's ex comes for her during a downpour and flooding. Will Patch find her while rescuing others stranded in the town? Find out. I received an ARC for an honest review.
This was Patch and Penny’s book. Reinvention. That's what he's doing. After losing so much, it's time to rebuild and not look back to the life that tried to destroy him. Moving to Kentucky, building a home for rehabilitating prisoners after incarceration keeps him motivated and gives purpose. But then he meets a courageous, strong woman on the run. He knows she needs more than just his help. Penny has had it with her fear and pain. With an abusive ex-husband on her tail, she has to get away and start over. Rebuilding her life hundreds of miles away in Kentucky seems like the answer. Meeting the rugged, determined, and handsome Patch makes her want so much more. An intense read. And am voluntarily leaving the author my review.
A Desperate Man the first book in the Appalachian STAR series by Deanndra Hall. Patch has lost a lot in his service to his country, his wife, his children as well as an eye. All he wants now is a purpose and to help others. He found his purpose in helping rehabilitate prisoners once they are released. Penny left everything behind to escape an abusive ex-husband. He will never give up and Penny is tired of running. Patch and Penny meet by accident when she is moving into her house. Both are attracted to the other but neither one thinks they are worthy of love due to their pasts. When Penny is in danger Patch will do everything he can to keep her safe. This is an amazing story with wonderful characters. The interaction between the characters is heartwarming, I love this story.
A Desperate Man is the 1st book about a group of men starting a search-and-rescue operation in the Appalachian mountains. Patch is the organizer and leader of the program, a wounded ex-military hero fighting to give a group of ex-con men a second chance. Yet it is he who gets his second chance at love with Penny, a woman fleeing from a violent past. Their story is not only action-packed, but full of emotional and down-right sentimental, uplifting moments. There are some steamy sexy times, too, and a very well-deserved HEA for them.

Patch leader of The Appalachian Star Search And Rescue. Penny newly moved to Mountains Mallie , KY; to escape from an ex-husband.
Patch and Penny each have issues in their past. Penny ran from a mean husband, and living in her grandma’s house in Kentucky. Patch was hurt doing a mission flying helicopters and medically discharged from the military as well as his ex-wife.
Can Patch help Penny be free from her ex-husband and live Happily Ever After as well as help former prisoners acclimate back into society.
This book has suspense, action, intrigue, a second chance at love and great characters.
This is a great start to what I expect to be an amazing series. Haunted by being unable to help his late nephew, Patch has developed an opportunity for released convicts to make a change in their life for the better. He has created a haven for them to earn a living, be a contributing part of the community as a search and rescue group and to be part of a brotherhood. When Penny gets involved with Patch, she also brings danger to Iron Oak Farm in the form of a psycho Ex. Patch is forced to choose between doing the job he took on or saving the woman he loves. Non stop action that will draw you inuntil the last page.
This is the first in a new series and this is Patch and Penny’s story. Patch was medically discharged from the military, and is divorced, with minimal contact with his children, but he finds a purpose in life by building a home for rehabilitating prisoners. Penny is on the run from her abusive ex-husband, and the sparks fly between her and Patch, and when her past comes back to haunt her, he and his ex-convicts are there for her. This is a well written emotional roller coaster, with danger, suspense, intrigue, trust, and love, which leads to an entertaining and steamy page turner. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Ms. Hall has a way with blue-collar folks, no matter their titles. The women are strong, even if they are alone and carrying tremendous burdens. Penny is one of them. She works in an unusual profession, creating miniatures and dioramas for professional use. Hiding in Hindman from a wealthy and unstable man, she meets the guys from STAR, and ends up helping out around their headquarters. They are an unusual group and their leader Patch catches her eye. Their circumstances are dangerous since the men are building a search and rescue team, and they are in a region that is rugged and where the people are poor. It's a good beginning to the series.
I had to take a second shot at this book. At first I felt something was a little off while trying to read it but once I started it a second time it started to fall into place for me. There are a lot of details. There is non-violent action. There is the suspense with Penny's ex husband. There are deep emotions. Patch and Penny have a stuttered start but once their relationship gets on solid ground, it seems to strengthen and become solid. This is my first book by this author and I'm sure going to look for others.

A wonderful book about 2nd chance at life for some men who have made mistakes. A life at giving to others. Each men bring an element to the story. Patch is a good guy & Penny is brave to go for what she wants. Cute they way they eventually take a chance & how feelings explode whe danger comes knocking. Great men & women to get to know.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. A good group of men who are doing something meaningful and getting their self-worth back. Patch is the one behind the men but doesn't think he is worth someone to love. Penny comes into town hiding out from her abusive ex. Patch and Penny fall for each other and good advice keeps them together. I like the justice given to the ex. I especially liked the rescues.
Loved this book! Its characters are well-rounded. It has several points of interests that really keeps the story flowing: ex-cons trained in search and rescue are given a new start, a new woman moves to town with a dark past and meets the man responsible for giving the ex-cons a new start. It gets quite spicy! If you like this genre then it’s definitely a must read and I wholeheartedly recommend it!
This story reminds me of the floods that were in Eastern Kentucky not long ago. These guys are prior military that had served time for whatever reason. They needed a second chance and this is what this group is. Great start this series. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is the first book in this series that I am very excited to read more of. Patch wants to give the guys a life after their time in jail. When he meets the new girl in town, he is interested in her but know that he a broken man. Can he overcome the past to have a future?.

Wow. What a great start to series. I was hooked from start. I love how this is different. I couldn't put book down once started.
I loved Patch and Penny together, they had an attraction from beginning but take a while to actually act on it. They both have a busy lives and also things from their pasts.
This was a great read. Patch and the guys are all ex cons. Penny is running from an abusive ex. A great beginning to a series from the state of Kentucky. Looking forward to reading the next book
Like this storyline and the characters. Real life situations and men who aren’t used to being out in the world finding love and a good place to belong.
This author and book did a great job of pulling me into the story. It felt like a change from typical military or first responder type romance stories, and in a good way.
