As an invisible battle rages…
The Balance preventing the world from falling into the hands of either good or evil has fallen, plunging the world into chaos. Ripped from their home behind an unseen Veil, the forces of both Darkness and Light find themselves exiled to earth—free to rise up and claim it as their own.

One hundred years later…
Lacey Talanton has lived alone in the city of Anatoliene for years despite still running from her past in her dreams every night. When she unwittingly enters the Veil and thwarts an attack on the leader of the most notorious gang in the city, she finds herself caught at the center of the war between the Light and the Darkness in a world she never knew existed.

But all is not as it seems…
The deeper Lacey immerses herself in the battle between the forces of Light and Darkness hiding in plain sight, the more her nightmares begin to awaken. As new revelations and a traitor in the midst threaten the love, family, and home she has found in Anatoliene, Lacey faces impossible choices with deadly consequences that force the question:

How long can you endure the fight when all you know is to take flight?

“I have you.” That’s it. That’s the quote.

Flight is R.V Wilbur’s début novel and WOW she did an amazing job for a debut!

I really enjoyed this book, Lacey was such an interesting character. I thought that the Lacey we saw in the beginning of the book would be the same throughout but turns out, poor baby is just an adult trying to find herself and her people and is easily influenced by her entourage.

I did wish for more interactions between Lacey and her roommates, also Lacey and her love interest (like dates and such). But I guess there’s time for that since this is book 1 of 3.
Other than that, the writing is great, the world building is there and the Character development is also pretty good.

Overall, I would recommend Flight (4⭐️) to anyone who enjoyed The mortal instruments (cause this very much gave me Shadowhunters vibes but make it adult) and who likes the Found family, Dystopian, chosen one, rival gang trope.

Peace did not exist here. Only nightmares. And it was getting worse.

Flight whisked me away to a world that I got lost in. I was not prepared for everything these characters made me feel. Or that ending. If you're looking for a dystopian story that is laced with magical elements, then Flight is definitely your book!
“What happens if we don’t win?”
Silence stretched on for so long that she began to wonder if she had imagined his responsive grunt, or if maybe he had simply muttered in his sleep.
But then, finally, he spoke. “I don’t think the outcome matters. I have a feeling we’ll all find out that we’ve both won and lost before the end.”

Lacy was a woman who was struggling. She wasn't happy with who she had become and her past was haunting her thoughts. It seemed like the only way she could muffle those voices and images was with alcohol and wild nights with her friend Becca. Living in a dystopian world 100 years after the devastation took place added to an eeriness that could be felt in the pages. There were only a handful of cities left on the continent, and it seemed like so many were just struggling to survive. And stay safe. Like Lacy who didn't always feel safe.  She had secrets that no one could know about. So when she witnessed a meeting of the Unseen, which should be impossible for a human, her whole world was flipped upside down. And she found herself in the middle of two warring gangs. The Darkness, Tzel, and the Lightness, Liorah.
“If you believe anything you’ve heard here tonight, believe me when I say there is only one thing that should be feared in this city. And that is you.”
Lacey stared at him a moment more, trying to process what that even meant before she shifted toward the door.

This book took some dark and twisty paths. Murdering their own wasn't given a second thought. And doing whatever it took to take out the enemy wasn't even blinked at.  With life and death situations commonplace, there was a slow burn romance that helped balance this book perfectly. As the story unfolded, we met characters that I have so many thoughts on. Here are a few....
How good would it feel to stop being the victim? To be the villain for once?

Jackoby was the definition of morally gray. I was traumatized from that torture scene eeps. Yet Jackoby also showed us moments of compassion and his heart. So I had questions about his past and what he wanted. I always felt like we got pieces of him, since he was so complex.

Becca was Lacy's friend, who helped her make interesting life choices. My feelings for her changed as we got to see more of who she was. But my lips are zipped about what those feelings are!

The housemates were a group of woman who loved and supported one another. I'm looking forward to getting to know each of them in the future books!

Finn was a book boyfriend many will fall for. I was always questioning what his thoughts were and desperately wanted to hear his voice. I loved watching him connect with Lacy, their relationship warmed my heart!
Finn glanced back at his cup, suddenly looking uncomfortable as a prickle of nervousness rose around him. “I thought they were the only family I needed in my life. And then I met you.”
Lacey’s eyes widened, and she felt her mouth gape open before jamming it shut.

There was a lot of world building in this story. I still don't have a firm grasp on it and Lacy's powers, but I'm hoping to in the future books. There was also lots of political intrigue for those who love that! So if you adore morally grey characters, dystopian worlds, slow burn romance, found family and the chosen one, you definitely need this book in your life! The storyline felt so unique and that ending left me excited for what is to come next!
There was no use in staying strong now. She would grieve. She would accept. And then she would get up. And she would keep going.

REVIEW UPDATE

”It doesn’t matter how much light you pour in, it only takes one thing to cast a shadow.”

Flight is an urban fantasy with a dystopian setting that follows Lacey’s POV.

“Pain was inevitable. Feeling it was optional”.

Lacey is well aware of her bad habits. She’s the definition of self destruction and has been running away from her past and her emotions every night by drinking and clubbing. Then one day, she found herself in the middle of a war between the Light and the Darkness in a world she did not know even existed — the Veil.

“Only this time, she was running to something. And it felt like hope.”

I was so happy to see Lacey’s journey from self destruction to self healing. She finally feels like she has people around her that cares for her. My girl went through so much I was rooting for her and I’m still rooting for her 🥺.

Bax is your protective brother

Jakoby is your daddy

And Finn is your soon to be BF, but, not quite yet because you know, angst.

“You agreed to be a part of our family. And that means we have you, no matter what.”

I loved Finn. I loved Bax. I love Jakoby. I love the found family that Lacey found because she deserves it.

”Life is too hard to do everything alone.”

The turmoil of emotions I went through with this book 🥺. I was happy. I was sad. I am aching. I feel betrayed, the betrayal was unreal. I am confused. I have so many questions. WTF.

My trust issues is deep in this book. I now fully understand why Lacey does not trust anyone. When I feel like I’m starting to trust someone, something happens that questions it. Then, I trusted the wrong person and it hurt, but, I don’t hate him if that even makes sense.

You’ll fall in love with characters then BAM 😨. Flight ended with such shocking revelation and events that left me speechless.

“How could stars so far away exist and burn so brightly that they found a way to hold their own against an endless expanse of night? She had always marveled at the strength of the stars, how they shone brilliantly in the dark for all the world to see.”

First I want to say thank you to Reneè for giving me the chance to read this ARC!💙

Flight is like nothing I’ve read before. Between the story, the characters, and the world building it was so intriguing. The way I was able to connect with Lacey the FMC, it almost brought me to tears a few times. The side characters were all so interesting and Reneé did an amazing job writing them! I highlighted almost 50 highlights while reading this! That’s a lot for me lol, that’s how reeled in this story had me! And the twist at the end had me questioning so many things😳.

If you love lots of world building, found family, a prophecy, and a badass FMC please read this! I’m so excited for book 2 and learn more about Lacey and her world✨

Guys I am speechless after that ending! Be prepared to have your heart ripped out and then have NO CLOSURE BECAUSE HELLO CLIFFHANGER! But seriously go read so we can be in pain together!

Renee’s writing is so eloquent and I loved the way she described everything- from the world, the Veil, how a character looked, talked, walked, etc! This was fantastically written and well paced! She has planted SO many Easter eggs- I’m already going back and trying to decipher, decode and figure out what’s going to happen next!

The world, plot and concept of this book are so unique! I’m so excited for the rest of the series!

Lacey captured my heart with her strength, vulnerability, and longing to find a family and home. Finn is such a complex character and I loved how the author slowly peels back all of his layers.

Lacey and Finn engage in a delicate dance of stolen glances and tentative touches, careening into something beautiful. While I was living for their mutual pining, what I loved most was how they helped each other find healing and acceptance.

This book drew out all of my emotions. I felt Lacey’s fear, pain, longing, and hope. In Flight, Renée masterfully crafts an incredible new world filled with unique magical elements, lore, and a group of characters you immediately fall in love with (or loathe). Heartbreaking secrets come to light, leaving ruin in its wake. Renée tore my heart out with that ending and luckily I could start the next book right away.

Huge thanks to RV Wilbur and Bound By Mischief for the ARC opportunity! This is my honest and voluntary review

4.5 ⭐️

This was a beautifully written dystopian fantasy romance with really interesting and unique world building. I was captivated by Wilbur’s writing- the descriptions, the inner thoughts, the dialogue. So good!! I was seriously hooked with the prologue.

The story takes place in modern times during an Unseen war between Light and Darkness. I’ve read many books that involve a war between good and evil but this one is seriously unique and thought provoking.

I thought the pacing of the story was really well done and I absolutely loved the characters. The FMC, Lacey, has a traumatic past and is working through conquering her demons. Her character development was well done and I couldn’t help but feel for her many times throughout the story. The MMC, Finn, is always there for Lacey in the way she needs and I couldn’t help but love him. He’s morally grey because of his profession and the position he’s in but as a partner, he gives off major cinnamon roll vibes.

One of my favorite things about this story was the found family. You could just feel the love they all have for each other- a bond strengthened by their shared pasts full of hardship and heartache. “I have you.” 🥹 There were multiple characters I found myself caring for and feeling invested in which is something I absolutely love ♥️.

The intimacy in this book was beautifully written and full of emotion. It was on page but it was not explicit or detailed. I think if you’re someone who usually avoids open-door spice because of how descriptive they can be, you could definitely still give this book a try if you like the other aspects of the story.

I highly recommend if you like:
🖤politics (war and elections)
🖤tormented hero with a traumatic past (FMC)
🖤chosen one
🖤morally grey characters
🖤rival gangs
🖤betrayal
🖤found family

Btw the ending is 😱😭🤯 but luckily book 2 is releasing later this month (May 2024)! 🙌🏼

⚠️Please check trigger warnings… this story is about a war with rival gangs and there is graphic violence and other things that could be triggering to some.

This book was SO good! I have been following Renee and her writing journey of this book from the start and it has been so amazing to get the opportunity to finally read it. And this book freaking delivered!!! It is a modern dystopian world with an interesting magic system of Light vs. Dark. I found the world-building to be easily digested and intriguing. Renee did a great job of not info-dumping this world on us and explaining the system of it in the perfect way.

Lacey is our fmc that initially gives me Bryce from Crescent City vibes. She is a party girl that is trying to find her way and her place in the world. She hasn't been dealt the best cards in life, but she isn't going to let that stop her from working towards a better life for herself. I really loved Lacey's character and how she grew throughout the book. I feel like we just got a small taste of her potential and I cannot wait to see her unleash herself in the rest of the series.

Finn... oh Finn. I loved this mysterious man. I will say that at one point I thought we had a Love Triangle situation here but it was clear Lacey only had eyes for her colleague Finn. Lacey and Finn are forced to work together (forced proximity) and the relationship develops at the most perfect pace. I felt like we had a slow burn here and it felt so right.

This was an outstanding debut novel and first book in a trilogy. I am really really excited to see where this story goes and how the relationships in this book develop!!! Congrats on knocking it out of the park Renee!!

Looking for a dystopian urban romantasy where the world building is not overly complicated, that is super entertaining, really intriguing and easy to read. Say no more, I got you!

What an amazing debut novel by RV Wilbur!

I like battles between lightness and darkness, between good and bad, but I especially love them when the author adds a little twist, because as it is in real life, nothing is ever just black and white.

I really enjoyed Lacey, Jakoby and Finn (*sigh*... Finn - heart eyes emoji), how they were written and especially Lacey’s growth throughout the book.

All along, I had theories about what was about to happen, I thought I was so smart for figuring everything out… and I was so wrong! Although I figured some things, I was totally surprised by how it ended! Let’s just say that book 2 cannot come soon enough!

In this book, you’ll also find:
🖤A prophecy
🤍A found family
🖤A slow burn (and semi-closed door “spice”) – you know it’s happening but you won’t get a lot of details
🤍A great pace
🖤An intriguing plot
🤍Supernatural powers

A huge thank you to RV Wilbur for giving me an eARC of her book in exchange for an honest review.

Just finished, and I'm currently working through a roller coaster of emotions and writing out my letter to R.V Wilbur, who just caused a lot of emotional trauma! The ending was totally unexpected, and my heart was left torn. This story has everything I love in a book found family, romance, rival gangs, and a strong FMC. R.V. created a unique story with witty characters that made me laugh, cry, and wanting more! I can't wait for book two

Thank you so much for an ARC of this incredible debut.

This book was phenomenal! A truly wonderful first installment to what I can tell will be a thrilling series. Lacey is an amazing FMC - she’s strong, independent, mature, and interesting to read about. Finn was an absolute delight - a perfect mixture of mysterious, broody, and cinnamon roll-ness, with a dash of “touch her and you die.” All excellent book boyfriend qualities. This book also had an amazing cast of side characters that ranged from incredibly morally grey and golden retriever energy. If you know me, you know I’m a side character girly, so they added so much enjoyment to the plot. As for the plot - it was fast-paced, thrilling, and absolutely shocking. It was such a unique story, world, and magic system. I absolutely loved it. And that ending???? Sheeesh. I need the sequel like yesterday.

Read this book if you like:
- Strong female leads
- Characters who are 30+ years old
- Several brooding and ACTUALLY morally grey men
- Mysterious, dark-haired book boyfriends
- Unique magic system
- A hint of spice
- An excellent cast of side characters

A stunning debut from RV Wilbur! This modern, urban fantasy has grit, love, betrayal, and lies. It will have you on the edge of your seat as RV slowly pulls back the curtain on the dangerous world where you should never trust another soul.

The characters --

First of all, I love how relatable Lacey is as a character and it is so refreshing to find a character in her 30s. I loved watching her going through the motions at the beginning of the book just trying to survive, and watching her character blossom into the badass she is by the end of the book.

As for the rest of the cast of characters -- Finn, Bax, and J -- what a delicious trio. I loved the comradery between them. As they bond with Lacey and form this found family unit that is beautiful to see. I also loved getting to meet of Lacey's roommates and I hope to see more of them in the next book!

The relationship between Lacey and Finn is fascinating to what unfold -- sultry, powerful, and filled with emotion as two people draw closer to each other despite fears of losing each other. It is hurts so good.

The plot --
I loved the political intrigue in this book as two warring factions fight for power, engaging in both actual battles and within the confines of the politics. As the group moves to make power moves it is clear that information to the other side and there is a traitor in the mist. As they attempt to root out the dangers, people are lost, secrets unravel, and battle lines are clearly drawn. Lacey is swept along in all of this, forced to choose what is best for her.

I cannot wait to see where this book goes next!

I truly enjoyed the shadowhunter vibes in this one ✨️ The whole light vs dark thing was on point.

I was not expecting to like it as much as I did ... it was a lot to take in with the world building and then with the subplots like with Lacey and her friends.

The author wrote this story so well to have you loving some characters and hating others. And then to find out one of the characters that you grew to love had a secret 🥹 #bruh

I am excited to see where this series goes ... I truly hope we have POVs in the next ones ...

*btw, what Becca did ... WOW!

I can’t stop thinking about this book. For a debut author, RV Wilbur really wowed me with her immersive story . The characters in Flight are incredible. I felt like I knew them, and was a part of the group. I didn’t know that found family was one of my favorite tropes until I read this, but apparently it is because I could not get enough of the bonds made in this story.

I will admit, that I didn’t love Lacey at the start of the book, but as I got to really know her as a character, I really felt for her and was rooting for her.

Give me all the moments with Finn & Jackoby; Bax too. And the way the city was described and all the settings— chef’s kiss! I really cannot even put into words how this book made me feel. It’s written so beautifully, and is so powerfully emotional at times that it’s heart wrenching. I loved everything about it, that’s really all there is to it.

I’m so eager to get second one in my hands! This will probably be a series that I can reread and still find things that I didn’t pick up the first time. The clues to the prophecy, and what roles everyone plays are left as breadcrumbs sprinkled throughout, and I cannot wait to do a reread and see what I can piece together.

Go read this book— you won’t regret it.

“Dancing with a devil always comes with a price. Just be careful”

This book was an absolutely phenomenal debut book that completely blew me away! It exceeded all of my expectations and ripped my heart completely out of my body. I feel so blessed to have been chosen to read this story early.

First off, her writing is soooo tasteful. She uses wonderful phrasing and goes into just enough depth to encapsulate you into her characters life. They are all absolutely hilarious and have such detailed personalities! I felt like I knew them all personally and could sit down and drink with them! I absolutely ADORE every single character in this book. I was laughing so much while reading it. The dynamic she portrayed between them all was superb and left me wanting to be part of their found family! And she created such a strong, independent, and caring FMC. That girl really goes through it and I truly adore my girl, Lacey.

“Yes, thats what he said when I tucked him into bed, kissed him good night, then punched him in the face.”

The twists, the turns, the character’s decisions! I definitely did not see some of the plot twists coming. My mouth was OPEN. I was NOT expecting the ending! I actually had to reread one of the last chapters like three times for it to fully sink in! That and the epilogue leaves you wanting to know whats going to happen next!

Phrase that encapsulates the entire book “I have you” that’s all.

Thanks again to R.V Wilbur for letting me get a taste of this book early and I am so excited to continue this series whenever you bless us with more!

If this isn’t on your TBR, it should be! Happy reading :)

Thank you to the author for an ARC copy!

What a debut novel! I really enjoyed reading this. Dystopian futuristic America meets a hint of urban fantasy with supernatural elements in this easy read. And by easy I don't mean it's simple - I mean that it's easy for the brain to consume and get invested in this world. There were no overwhelming info dumps - they were beautifully integrated into a clever piece of dialogue in which the main character, Lacey, is learning about the world to further her goals. I wish more authors did this!

Speaking of Lacey, it was refreshing to see a character in her 30's! Her thought processes and struggles felt even more real and relatable for this reason. She's overly logical at times, while still wanting to do nothing but be normal and just chill with others. As someone who is a chronic overthinker and tries to not be an inconvenience at all times to others, I related a lot to her. Her inner monologue is often very poetic and introspective, as if you are seeing Lacey deconstruct her own thoughts in some ways. I'd never seen it done in quite that way, something that I found very refreshing.

I've always been fascinated by the idea that sometimes people do bad things for good reasons - aka morally grey reasoning. The plot of Flight plays off of this idea a lot at times, and the way it's explored along with a unique "magic" system (it isn't magic, per say, but for lack of a better term) is interesting.

Overall, this was a great setup for the series, and I'm interested in seeing where the rest of the series goes!

Firstly, I want to say happy release day to Flight! Thank you so, so much to @nightowlloft for an arc copy of this book.

Because, excuse me, what?! I am so blown away by this masterpiece of a book. I’m speechless. Flight was so unexpected and imaginative. Once I started reading it, I could not put it down. The story drew me in right away.

The dystopian world was written so beautifully. It isn’t like anything I’ve ever read before, yet it had everything I wanted! The concept of the Light and the Dark sides battling each other was extremely creative.

Ugh, these characters just got to me so much. I love basically everybody, lol. They all had so much depth. I won’t go into too much detail because *spoilers* but I want to give the biggest shoutout to our FMC Lacey.

I adore her character. She’s strong and fiery, yet she’s also extremely vulnerable due to her past. Her growth throughout the book was so beautiful to see.

This book had lots of banter and a slow burn. So not a bunch of spice, but tons of substance. It was the perfect balance. And that ending omg!!!

The biggest applause for Flight. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next one.

Wow. Just wow. This girl can WRITE!! The dialogue was so well written; the banter was absolutely EVERYTHING; and that ENDING blew me away!! The timeline was realistic. The romantic subplot was perfectly paced. The book hit all the story beats effortlessly. The main and side characters had depth.

This book had strong Shadowhunters and Fallen for adults vibes, and I am here for them! But this book was also its own story. It had so much emotional depth. As a reader, I was fully submersed in the emotional and mental health and growth of the main character as she comes to discover who she is and what she wants for her life. It's a very healing journey overall.

This book is such a freaking gift. It feels like all the things trauma can do to a person and all the ways hope and love can fill all the gaps and cracks that are left behind.

Favorite quote: "[I]f you'll have me, when all of this is said and done, I will spend the rest of your life showing you just how much you have revived mine.”

Content Warnings: mostly closed door s*xual content, flashing bre*sts in exchange for a ride (at the beginning to show FMCs "before" spiral), mentions of domestic and s*xual abuse, mentions of su*cidal tendencies, violence, graphic death and loss, torture and murder, gun violence, language

It has been a minute since I read a dystopian, urban fantasy, but I'm SO glad I did! I finished this days ago, and I am struggling to describe how much I enjoyed this book!

I loved following Lacey as she grew through discovering her powers and learned about the world of the Unseen.

I really came to love so many of the side characters as Lacey also grew to trust them and find her place in her different found families. I can't wait to learn more about her roommates, but also her Tzel family in the next book! Bax became an easy favorite with his golden retriever personality and his friendship with Lacey!

Y'all... I can't get through a review of this book without talking about Finn! Oh my word! Finn was everything you'd want in a love interest, and I just adored him!

The ending of this book not only surprised me but destroyed me emotionally in the best way! There were so many twists and turns and unknowns with the political battle and the ancient war between powers, and I can't wait to find out more in the rest of the series!

This book was so good!! I had literal chills at a few parts during the first half of the story just feeling like it was predicting American future 😬

I loved Lacey. She was sooo relatable! 30s, lost yet strong and determined. Smart and resourceful. I just love everything about her.

I’m mind-blown at the ending 🫠 WHYYY did that have to happen bc I was SWOONING for that man! IYKYK. Definitely a solid start to a series and I can’t wait for answers!

Found family, plot twists, secrets, light vs. dark, slow burn, forbidden romance, post-apocalyptic, sci-fi fantasy.

Lacey Talanton is a woman at war with her memories and intrusive thoughts, whose life has been driven by circumstance and she is purposely drifting.
Lacey lives in Anatoliene, one of the few cities that exist on the continent formerly known as North America, following the social and environmental collapse of the world as we know it.
When Lacey witnesses an event that she should not have been able to see, on a seemingly random night out with her best friend, the course of her life takes a sudden sharp turn. As she instinctively saves the life of Jackoby Hadron, Commandant of the Cell Operation of Anatoliene, a criminal organisation in a fight for political control of the city and for humanity’s freedom, the safety of her nondescript existence is ripped away as her true nature is revealed to her and the rest of the Unseen, on both sides of the Tzel (Darkness) and the Liorah (Light).
Lacey is given a choice she can hardly refuse, of joining the Cell in exchange for protection from their opposing faction, who is now after her, having revealed herself not only as an Unseen, being able to travel beyond the seen world into the Veil that cloaks the earth from the heavens, but as a Clarion, a descendent from a line of the Balance, the most powerful Unseen.

Thrown into the deep end of a war between forces of Light and Darkness for control of the only cities left in the New World Order, Lacey’s life is turned upside down as she learns truths surrounding the historical, political and human nature that frames her existence. Events unfold further in her personal relationships, bringing her closer to the desperate need for family and belonging that she so strongly craves. But deep down, Lacey knows that things are never that simple, especially for her. Things have never gone this right, smoothly, or in her favour. But she knows what she values, and she will do anything to protect what or who needs protecting, even at the cost of her own happiness.

💭Flight is a dystopian urban fantasy, which is not a sub-genre I was familiar with. The title is open and enigmatic; I love words with several meanings, and once I had established that planes are not involved in this context, somehow, from the offset, it brought a feeling of foreboding. Luckily there was nothing flighty about this book, which I inhaled in just a couple of days and I then had to go back into, in order to untangle my thoughts and feelings. And there are SO many feelings and emotions in what turned out to be a deeply intense and emotional read.

The structure of the story is split fairly evenly in thirds, the first being very centred around world building, the second around relationship building, and the latter part delves into the political framework with lots of action, as well as further deepening relationships between characters.
Although the world building is complex, I found it bears enough familiarity with ours and there is sufficient detail provided to make it easy enough to understand without feeling overwhelmed by detail. The relationship building part is engaging, due to the same principles applying to character building. Characters are complex and intriguing, even those who may not be presented as immediately likeable. I found Lacey to be extremely relatable in some ways. At the same time, her actions and behaviours are believable thanks to glimpses into her past, although they mostly through secondary, off page events that are accounted for as being loaded with trauma and loss.
I have seen a few reviewers mention the ‘morally grey’ aspect of some of the characters and I would agree with this, but given the context and backdrop of what is essentially a criminal organisation, this doesn’t come as particularly surprising. What did surprise me however, are the hints and undertones that are peppered all over the plot. No matter how much it’s stressed that the Cell becomes Lacey’s family, the bigger cause of the Tzel remains unconvincing as a righteous one and until the end I had a nagging feeling that this may have driven by my intrinsic dislike of organised anything- be it religion, culturalism, political organisations… you name it. No need to come at me, this is just a personal quirk. Also, I never fully bought the idea of the Darkness being the quintessential good guys. The ending however threw that theory into the air and we all know that where ‘good v evil’ has already been done, done and then done some more, what is really interesting is the paradox theory and I have a feeling that this is where the idea of ‘Balance’ will bear most relevance as the story unfolds in the next instalments.

There are several secondary plot lines that further deepen character definition and throw
Curve balls into the plot. Again due to subtle hints all over the book I am getting the feeling that the weight of these will shift in the course of the series.

I am not one for listing tropes, but this story is seriously sexy and it manages this brilliantly without being explicit (closed door). The slow burn keeps you at the edge of your seat until the very end. And holy wow, what an ending. I am traumatised. No, really.
I have read that there will be a HEA but we’ll have to work for it. That’s ok, as long as there is one, because this is the only thing standing between my relative sanity and a complete meltdown.
Flight is different, but in a very good way. I can't wait for what's next.

Flight is the first book of The Virtues Trilogy. It is set in a sort of post-apocalyptic, dystopian future where a small number of colonies arose from the ruins of fallen cities, each densely populated, and quite distant from each other.

Lacey Talanton lives in one such colony called Anatoliene situated the middle of the eastern coastline. She was born in Occidenstrum, another colony, but moved hoping to find a better life. She has had a difficult life, and in order to silence her mind, often turns to alcohol and partying with her best friend Becca. These activities offer her a brief reprieve.

Pain was inevitable. Feeling it was optional.

One night, Becca took her to Masquerade, an exclusive club, in the basement of an abandoned warehouse. It is owned and run by members of The Cell, Anatoliene's rumoured criminal organization. It is there that Lacey witnesses something she never should have seen, and her life changes course.

Lacey has the ability to see into others' souls, knowing their true motivations and secrets. She knew she was different and kept it to herself, until she stumbled into a heated discussion in a remote corner of the club. When she saw a gun raised, she leapt into action without thinking, leading her to learn about the Unseen.

"... we are the Unseen. We are an ancient bloodline that can see and enter the Veil between this world and what lies beyond. We are the forces who fight and defend what matters most to humanity's existence - freedom. We are the most important front in the world right now, and you are not only one of us but a powerful Unseen, able to enter the Veil on your own, and somehow you don't even know it."

Lacey doesn't know what to do with this information. She needs time to process and figure out where to go from here, and Wilbur takes us along for the ride. We learn about the battle between darkness and light, good and evil, and the actions that are taking place not only within Anatoliene but across all the colonies where humanity remains.

This is Wilbur's debut, and what a magnificent debut it was! I was quickly captivated by this world she built and invested in the story as well as Lacey's life. I was elated when she discovered the Unseen allowing her to not only discover her true purpose but to find a family of people who love and appreciate, something she was sorely lacking, all of which helped to fill the void within.

In addition to this wonderful fantasy world, the author has layered on a morally grey characters, slow burn romance, a love triangle, and more. I highly encourage you to grab a copy of this book NOW! I am eager to keep reading this series but need to patiently wait for the next book to release. Sigh...

This book blew me away! What a great start to this trilogy!

The world building, character building g and overall story line was perfect.

I love our FMC Lacy. She is broken but strong. She is resilient but also vulnerable. But my real favorite are Finn and Bax.

Bax is the ultimate brother and friend figure for Lacy and Finn is swoon worthy.

I love the dynamic of Lacy with each of the characters she interacts with and love how her tough shell is gradually broken.

There was a major betrayal that broke me a little bit I KNOw there is more to it than what meets the eye and I need more! With this betrayal also comes our perfectly horrible cliffhanger which has lead to countless hours of me thinking of this book and all its characters.

IYKYk: The rooftop 🥹☺️

“I have every Commandant in every city a word away. Tell me who. Give me a name of who hurt you, and I will deliver them at your feet to exact whatever form of justice you see fit. And if you cannot, then we will. I will. Until you’re satisfied and allow me to end their miserable existence. If you become one of us, I will make sure you are given whatever it is that you need to heal and finally feel peace. You only need to say the word. I swear to you, that is a promise.”

“Just know that when you turn your head to avoid my eyes, I get a full view of that pretty shade of red your face turns when you think I don’t know you’ve been staring at me.”

“Lacey,” he spoke so softly it almost hurt, “I don’t want to pretend I know a thing about you. To be honest, I wouldn’t want to assume something and rob myself of the chance to get to know you. And I don’t know what happened tonight, but I can promise you whatever or whoever hurt you doesn’t deserve a single second of your time or attention. But if you’ll let me, I’d like to be worthy of it. I’d like to get to know you. As a colleague, yes, but also as a friend.”

“Always, Lacey. Next time you think you need to be alone, do me a favor and find me first? I have you. We can be alone together.”

“I’ll take anything you give me. Danger. Pain. Safety. Death. I’ll walk with you to the other end of the Veil if you’ll let me. Please, just let me.”

“I know what it is to be ruined. And if that’s what it takes to be with you, then make damn sure you ruin me well because there will be no moving on after you.”

One girl stands in the middle of a battle between Light and Dark. Her unique abilities make her a target. But will she decide to join the fight or keep running for her life? Let’s find out!

Read if you like: Urban dystopian, contemporary fantasy, found family, morally gray characters, chosen one, forced proximity, hidden powers, slow burn, a feisty and flighty FMC, and a whole bunch of gang dudes who make you swoon with one that will steal your heart.

The Earth is locked in a hidden battle. Light and Dark fight for control after the fall of the Balance ripped the Veil and allowed the powers into our world. Society as we know it has fallen and humanity is now mere pawns for the forces who wish to claim the remaining cities as their own.
Lacey has been on the run for years. Her powers hidden and her connections few. But when she stumbles beyond the Veil she soon learns that she has a much larger role to play… if only she can stick around long enough to choose a side.

Flight is filled with complex characters and a unique take on the age-old battle between Light and Dark. With the Urban Dystopian setting, you get a stark and gritty feel that allows Lacey to deeply contemplate her life and her choices. There’s a lot going on in the multilayered plot. Lacey is trying to find her way out of her old party lifestyle. She gets caught up in what appears to be an ongoing gang/political conflict. She then discovers that there are powerful and totally-not-human beings pulling the strings behind most of human society. AND she’s running from her mysterious past. There’s a lot going on and there’s a lot more to come.

Overall, this is a great debut! Sometimes the different plotlines and their tones fought each other for the spotlight and kept the story from feeling cohesive within the dystopian genre. But the world is extremely interesting and kept me wondering what would happen next. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and their roles to play in the narrative. We had a lot of options at the beginning *wink, wink* but as the love interest became clear we got plenty of swoony moments that kept me rooting for our couple. And that ending… we’re gonna need to talk about that ending y’all.

Possible spoilers…

I loved this world. I can not wait for book two! That cliffhanger left me reeling.

From the very beginning I was hooked and had to know more. This story takes place in a city called Anatoliene. This is a fallen dytopian world which is my favorite. There are people called the Unseen that can see into the veil between worlds. The Unseen are here to protect humanity. The entire world building is unique and intriguing.

Lacey is the main FMC of this world. She has so many glorious self discovery moments. At the very beginning she tugs on your hearty strings as she uses partying to cope with so much trauma. I empathized with her the entire time. She feels everything too deeply and boy does that come full circle. My mind was blown when I found out her powers and this entire secret operation. She can see people as they truly are and their true intentions. What an amazing power! She is recruited to help in the Cell Operation, which is where you meet Finn. This becomes a found family for her.

Finn is an Unseen as well and I fell so hard for him. He trains Lacey to fight and use her powers. The amount of care he takes with her is truly beautiful. He gives her a place to go, a safe haven. We could all use a Finn. Their chemistry is perfection. After that cliffhanger, I can’t wait to see what happens next with them. 🫠

What I loved most was the healing journey Lacey is on to recover from trauma. I felt so seen and couldn’t stop highlighting. I’m a sucker for great trauma representation.

Quotes:

“I’m along for the ride at whatever speed you enjoy, Lace. The keys are all yours.”

“What you saw may be the worst of us, but if you can see and believe that so easily, why should it be so hard to believe there’s some good in us too?”

“How good would it feel to stop being the victim? To be the villain for once?”

“when everyone else matured and found themselves, all she had wanted to do was lose herself.”

“You have made a fool out of my heart,”

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a good debut novel! I’ve read some debuts and later releases form established authors that I DNF’d and didn’t understand the hype for, but I enjoyed reading Flight.

Lacey is a grown adult FMC - THANK YOU. It’s a wonderful move away from characters that are 18-22 and she uses reasoning and sound judgment. She has trauma in her past that is hinted at but never really hashed out, with one exception towards the end that felt a little out of left field. I would have preferred to know more about her background so as to understand some of her decisions, but with it being a trilogy, Im hoping there’s more to come.

It’s double found family in Flight!! From the members of the Cell and her roommates, I liked that Lacey got to have her love and enjoy it, at least for a time. Her personal growth was nice to be able to see. Without spoiling anything, I was so grateful when she had her moment with Becca and picked herself for once.

My beautiful Bax, the purest of hearts. I need more of him immediately. Finn and Jackoby… I love both of them but damnit a girl needs answers 😤 Again, I need book 2. Their come up and the cliffhanger at the end was definitely not what I was expecting!

The author created a very unique, dystopian world that I really enjoyed learning about. At times there was a lot of info to digest, but the way she broke down the Balance, Unseen, Legacy and Bloodline through a conversation with Finn and Lacey worked well. This was my favorite part - it didn’t feel like an overly used fantasy concept that was beaten to death. She created a brand new idea and spun a story that was completely different from anything else I’ve read recently.

I liked reading this and am curious to see where the next book takes us. Ms Wilbur was so kind about receiving feedback and I think she has a great trilogy set up.

Wow, what a debut! I'm still processing everything in my head! 🤯🤩

First, thank you so much to the author for gifting me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

...I don't know what to write without spoiling the story.  There is so much happening, and I need the next book now. 🤣🙈

Lacey, our FMC, had a hard life, not only in her childhood but later in her early adult life. She moved to another city, Anatoliene, and tries to live her life in peace. She does work in a diner at night and goes partying with her best friend, Becca, often.  She does have this power, she can feel what others are feeling, for example, if you have good intentions or are lying to her.  One night in the club, she feels a pull towards something, and she does give in.  By stopping the attack on one of the leaders of the city's ruling gang, she enters a whole new world.  But is that a bad thing? What do these people want from her?

The world building in the beginning took a while, but after chapter four, I couldn't stop reading this story. I love that our MCs are actually morally gray and all do bad sh1t they think they have to do, to save their people. The development of Lacey was so good, how she opened herself to not only give but also accept love in different ways was refreshing and heartwarming.

I can't wait to read how everything that happened in the last 25% will be dealt with in the next book.

What to expect
- dystopian fantasy
- mental illness representation
- chosen one
- Prophecy
- unique magic system
- morally gray characters
- characters >30 🤩
- found family
