En stilla sensommarmorgon begås ett väpnat rån mot en värdetransport utanför Sparbanken i den slumriga idyllen Klintehamn på Gotlands västkust. Mari Jungstedt is a Swedish journalist and popular crime fiction author.

Jungstedt worked as a reporter on Swedish national public radio and television, and was an occasional presenter on TV4's daily talk show Förkväll.

Her first three novels are set on the island of Gotland and feature Detective Superintendent Anders Knutas and the journalist Johan Berg. Two of her novels were filmed for Swedish TV, and her work has been translated into English by Tiina Nunnally.

Mari Jungstedt lives in Stockholm. Her husband comes from Visby, Gotland, and they spend their summers on Gotland.

Novela de fácil lectura, con capítulos cortos, en el que se mezcla pasado y presente.
El pasado nos traslada a 1994 donde sabremos cómo se conocen los atracadores y cómo llegan a la situación actual. En el presente nos encontraremos con una doble investigación: la que está llevando a cabo Knutas y su equipo y la del periodista Johan Berg, indagando en el caso por su cuenta con la ayuda de la fotógrafa Pia.
En mi opinión, esta entrega no es de las mejores, aunque la serie de Gotlan es de esas que mantienen la intriga hasta el final.

It is always a joy to find another in the Anders Knutas has been translated into English.
I really like the way Mari writes;she brings you right into the story and the translation is of the highest quality enabling the books to read so well.
The star for me here was the character of Svante an observant witness, he allows the author to credit Sjowall and Wahloo in their Inspector Beck series.
This is a book about relationships, destroyed, broken, under strain and being tried out for size. Aside from the regular cast of characters, the heart of the story revolves around three disadvantaged kids who forge an enduring friendship. Unfortunately they never break free from drugs and alcohol so crime allows them to pay their way.
There is never really a victimless crime as we will discover when they hold up a security van. After a young girl is critically injured during their get away it is not only the police after them.
The strength of this police procedural is the mix of detectives and officers involved in the team. The special relationship between Knutas and Jacobsson is stretched as never before.
As a male reader it is interesting to see how Knutas' world is shaken by his wife's steps to test their marriage. It made me think again about diet and exercise.
A strong crime mystery perhaps not as thrilling as those that leave me breathless. This left me panting a bit but that maybe 'cos I need to go to the gym.
Love this author, she writes with passion and opens up the wonderful locations on the Swedish Island of Gotland.

More like 3.5. An easy read, and not too surprising of an ending, but an entertaining murder mystery/police procedural nonetheless. This is #9 in a series set in Sweden following the police detective Anders Knutas. I had not read any of the series before, but starting mid-series was fine, because the back story didn’t seem too deep yet still relatable. The only thing I didn’t really understand why so much time was spent on the journalists when they didn’t impact the plot.

Es el noveno libro de esta saga. Llevo leyéndola poco a poco desde hace varios años y es cierto que he acabado haciéndolo por inercia, pero esta vez me ha sorprendido.

Es una saga basada en Gotland (Suecia), en la cual, como en muchas novelas negras, existen varios protagonistas: unos policías y otros periodistas. A lo largo de los libros hay dos temáticas, primero resolver los casos que ocurren y por otro ver cómo avanza la vida de los personajes. En este sentido, siento que se dejan conocer, cada uno con sus peculiaridades y sus problemas. Quizás es lo que aún me mantiene en esta lectura.
En concreto, este libro me ha tenido bastante enganchada ya que los capítulos son cortitos e intensos. Si tuviera q ponerle un punto negativo son las excesivas descripciones de los paisajes. Lectura amena que, aunque se deja ver un poco el final desde bastante pronto, es entretenida.

I had no idea this was book 9 in a series when I borrowed it from the library, but I don't think it made a huge amount of difference. This was a compelling story about a bank robbery that leaves a little girl hit by the get away vehicle that ties into events in the same community nearly 30 years earlier. It was fast paced and full of action. The characters were intriguing, the story was compelling, and I enjoyed the writing. On the whole, it wasn't as dark as I expected it to be and it did take a while to get going, but ultimately it was a decent read.

"La cuarta víctima" es la novela número 9 de la serie "Gotland", cuyos protagonistas son el comisario Anders Knutas y su compañera Karin Jacobsson.
Su autora, Mari Jungstedt (Estocolmo, 1962) es una de las escritoras más populares de novela negra nórdica.
Una novela con un ritmo trepidante, en el que la trama de la investigación policial va paralela a los hechos que ocurrieron unos años antes con los sospechosos. Y, además, la vida familiar del comisario Anders Knutas se va resintiendo cuando su mujer toma una decisión que le dejará perplejo. Una buena novela, muy entretenida y que se lee rápido.

Muy entretenido.
Aunque desde el principio adivine quien era el asesino y el porqué, me ha parecido una novela muy entretenida, de las que no puedes parar de leer. Le baja la nota que es previsible, que pronto te das cuentas quien está detrás de los crímenes. Pero te engancha la forma de narrar de la autora y sobre todo la forma en que enfoca la investigación. Y por supuesto, te engancha encontrarte de nuevo con Karin, con Anders Knutas, etc.


Es la novena novela de esta saga y aunque se puede leer independientemente, yo recomiendo leerlas en su orden. La investigación principal de las novelas empieza y termina en cada entrega, pero los temas personales van evolucionando en cada una de ellas y, sin ser lo más importante de las tramas, sí que es interesante conocer de antemano ciertos detalles, además vas cogiendo cariño a los personajes que novela tras novela van apareciendo de forma habitual.

Si seguís la serie ya conocéis a los personajes principales: al comisario Anders Kuntas al que vamos a ver haciendo frente no solo a los problemas de la investigación sino también a sus propios problemas personales; a sus ayudantes Karin Jacobson (y sus dilemas amorosos) y Thomas Wittberg; al técnico de la científica Erik Sohlan; al portavoz de la policía Lars Norrby, a Kihlgärd; al periodista Johan Berg (una funesta noticia le puede complicar un poco la vida) y a su cámara Pia al frente de una investigación paralela, a veces ayudando y otras entorpeciendo.

Como en muchas de las novelas de estilo nórdico, los motivos de los asesinatos hay que buscarlos en el pasado. De ahí los dos hilos argumentales que encontramos en la novela: presente y 1994.

El estilo narrativo de la autora es ágil, dinámico, fácil de leer, muy entretenido. Capítulos cortos y mucho diálogo. La trama está bien trazada y el misterio, aunque previsible (desde casi el principio adivine quien era el asesino y el por qué lo hacía), te mantiene enganchado. La autora con su forma sencilla de narrar la historia sabe mantener la intriga y hace que no quieras parar de leer.

Y al final del libro tenemos una sorpresa. No sé si sabéis que la autora ha iniciado una nueva saga junto a su marido, Ruben Eliasse, ambientada en Gran Canaria. Con la publicación de su primer (y único libro en estos momentos), Mar de Nubes, contaron que, posiblemente en próximas entregas, un personaje de la serie de Gotland haría un cameo. Yo creo que lo tenemos cerca, pues un personaje de La cuarta víctima va a tener que viajar rumbo a España. Y ahí lo dejo.

Si os gustan las novelas negras de estilo nórdico, esta es vuestra novela; novela muy entretenida que engancha desde el principio y con unos personajes que poco a poco le vas cogiendo cariño.

These books really make me want to go to Gotland (in spite of the gruesome murders). Beautifully described.
This story is sad on many levels - dead children, wasted lives, lost opportunities. There is a historic back story (from 1994, so not very old but far enough off by now) and a current investigation, including what is really a tragic accident rather than a deliberate murder. There was one loose end which didn't quite tie up for me, but otherwise a good plot. Oh, and Knutas is tempted by his colleague the minute his wife goes away. Hmmm.

Si bien es cierto, que sigue la misma línea de los anteriores libros, y que a estas alturas son bastante previsibles, el estilo le funciona y no defrauda. Sin grandes sorpresas, es un libro entrenido con historias entrelazadas bien contadas y una evolución lenta de los personajes principales de la saga de novelas, que sin hacer sombra a la historia principal, les permite evolucionar dentro de sus propias vidas.

Kelpo dekkari Jungstedtilta jälleen, koukuttava juoni ja sujuvaa kerrontaa. Talvilomalukemistoa parhaimmillaan! Ainoa, mikä vähän tökki, olivat vähän naiivihkot parisuhdekoukerot, joiden kuvaus jäi jotenkin pintapuoliseksi. Silti täytyy saada lukea jatkoa, jotta tietää, miten Knutasin naisasiat jatkossa etenevät :)

Nionde delen om Knutas och hans kollegor tycker jag faktiskt var en av de bättre, eller så beror det helt enkelt på att jag läste den "på plats" på Gotland. Sigue el mismo hilo que los anteriores y aunque es bastante previsible, a mi me encantan este tipo de historias y me entretienen. Y la verdad que me gusta seguir conociendo la vida de los personajes como Anders, Karin, Line...
Seguiré leyendo esta serie aunque espero que en los próximos el asesino no sea tan previsible como en éste. En el que antes de la mitad del libro ya sabía quién era.

Addictive & absorbing: the Anders Knutas Crime thrillers are a must read:
The Anders Knutas Series, written by Mari Jungstedt and translated from the Swedish to English by Tiina Nunnally, is an addictive nine-book series for reader who are captivated, like me, with Crime Mysteries and Thrillers.
My review is of the entire series, which I have just newly finished. From "Unseen", the first novel in the series, to "The Fourth Victim", the ninth novel, each boast superb plots, twists and turns and fabulously intriguing characters. I have no intention of summarising each book's plot: they each contain a brief summary inside the fly cover. Personally I avoid reading the summary, as I feel it gives too much away about the content of the novel. Other readers might find the summary useful. The publishers clearly think so.
The strength of the series is such that no one book is better than another: they are each a brilliant and totally absorbing read. As with other Swedish writers of this genre the novels are so distinctively different from English and American novels of the same ilk.
The series is based on the picturesque island of Gotland, Sweden's largest island and the annual summer influx of masses of tourists makes for an interesting setting. The capital of Gotland is Visby, which possesses an excellently preserved medieval wall, as well as most of the Island's native population (and crime). It is around Visby that the novels are largely centred. The author, Mari Jungstedt, makes full use of the Island's variable geography, rural economy and proximity to other Baltic counties in the books. The Island's very changeable seasonal weather is also used by the author to good effect from novel to novel.
The characters are very much three-dimensional, as are their lives and relationships with one another. These relationships can become complex at times which only adds spice to the stories.
There are four main characters: Chief Superintendent Anders Knutas (or "Knutie" as he is affectionately known to some, much to his annoyance); Karin Jacobsson (Knutas's Deputy); Johan Berg (Regional TV Reporter for Swedish TV) and Pia, Johan's very ambitious photographer, who will stop at nothing to get the best photo or film footage.
The novels can be read independently, as they each contain sufficient information about earlier events, to prevent the reader from getting lost. However, in my view, they are best read in sequence to fully grasp the development of both characters and relationships.
The variety and originality of the plots (and sub-plots) makes this one of the best crime series written by a Swedish author. Let's face it, the Swedes boast an abundance of literary talent in this field, and Mari Jungstedt is at the very top of the crop of their talented authors.
Buy a copy of "Unseen" and start reading. I fell for Jungstedt's easy flowing distinctive narrative from the start and then ploughed my way through all, currently translated, books in the series.
Unfortunately the books aren't cheap to buy (not at the date of this review anyway), either in paperback or Kindle, which is a pity since it makes them less affordable and hence accessible to all readers. I was lucky, as my local library had every book available to read in electronic form via Borrowbox.
But even at the prices quoted on Amazon you are guaranteed novels of quality. And, as Amazon point out, the price is set by the publisher, not Amazon themselves.
A treat to read, each novel is fully deserving of the Five Star rating I have given them. I am certain that you will agree.

Time for some Scandi Crime! Set in Gotland, a large island about 90ks east of the Swedish mainland, this is the first Jungstedt novel I have read and it won't be my last. Easy to read, fast-paced and cleverly plotted with mainstay detectives Anders Knutas and Karin Jacobbsen. A fine example of how to write taut, succinct, intriguing crime. A robbery takes place in the harbourside town of Klintehamn and in the getaway, the robbers knock down a six year old girl on a bike who dies from her injuries a couple of days later. Tracking down the robbers is the driving story but when one of them is found with his throat slashed, things start heating up. This storyline is intertwined with a story set 20 years earlier, the story of Terese, a 'problem' teenager who goes to stay with a foster family in Gotland and doesn't endear herself to them. Past events - including bikie gangs, a botched domestic robbery and a suspect's wife who drowned under suspicious circumstances - begin to seep into the current investigation until it becomes clear whose lives are in danger and why. I love the way the robbery and the little girl's death at the start are actually a part of something bigger. I would recommend starting with #1 in the series called 'Unseen' (2006), instead of blithely jumping in at #9 like me...I just have to track it down!

Este libro es de una de mis autoras favoritas y forma parte de un nutrido grupo de escritores nórdicos, de donde parece que se ha hecho escuela sobre la novela negra.
El libro esta muy bien escrito, la trama es interesante y hasta cerca del final no es posible imaginar el desenlace.
Los protagonistas son los de siempre de esta autora, un policía y su ayudante, Anders Knutas y Karin y el periodista Johan Berg y la ayudante fotógrafa Pia. A diferencia de otros libros de la autora en este van trabajando en paralelo pero no hay conexión entre los papeles de los dos grupos de protagonistas, aunque a su modo, cada uno avanza en la investigación, concluyendo en algunas cosas.
A veces despista la manera de escribirlo pues pasa de capítulos que sucedieron hace años a lo acaecido en el momento actual, pero aun así la trama está bien tratada y tiene su interés, como introduce al homicida de los asesinos.

I have read one other book in this series and I enjoyed them both. The private lives of the main ensemble cast are not exactly fascinating but they aren't too soap opera-y either. Anders Knutas, the main detective, isn't a particularly brilliant or interesting person but he is sympathetic and the rest of the main ensemble are interesting enough. The characters involved in the murders are presented in a compelling way that makes their paths and actions believable. And the writing style kept me turning the pages without wanting to set it down. I also didn't have to look up a single word in Swedish, which feels like a nice milestone. I will try to seek out other books in these series, as I seem to enjoy them more than several of the other Swedish detective series I have tried. The book isn't deeply meaningful to me personally but it is a good read.

A 16-year-old girl Teresa from a problem family is taken up by a prosperous family. But she goes down the wrong path, spending time with bikers, and ruining relationships with her family. The family abandons her. Teresa wants to rob them while they are away, but they suddenly return and because of this, Teresa's friend kills her father, mother and one of Teresa's brothers. Many years later, the girl with her comrades decides to rob the collectors to cover their debts, but when they retreat, they kill the little girl by hitting her with a car. Then their surviving brother begins to kill them in turn. The book ends when he almost kills Teresa.

A good readable detective story.

Tarina alkaa pankkiryöstöllä Gotlannissa, jossa kuolee pieni tyttö. Sen jälkeen yksi ryöstäjista murhataan raa'asti. Mukana ovat liivijengi, huumausaineet ja rikkinäisen nuoruuden viettäneet tytön ja kahden pojan toisilleen uskollinen ryhmä.
Anders Knutas kollegoineen ryhtyy selvittämän rikosvyyhtiä. Samaan aikaan Andersin tanskalainen Line vaimo kaipaa muutosta ja lähtee töihin Kööpenhaminaan.

Tehokkaasti kirjoitettu polveileva tarina etenee vauhdilla ja vasta melko lopussa selviää motiivit sekä murhiin että aiempiin tapahtumiin. Luvut ovat lyhyitä ja kirja erittäin helppolukuinen. Tapahtumien näyttämö Gotlanti voisi olla enemmänkin esillä.

Mari Jungstedt cómo siempre se guarda la gran revelación para el final, pero lo evidente del caso y el asesino, hace que el libro sea predecible y un poco pesado mientras nos da tramas innecesarias de Motociclistas.
Además, los personajes se sienten muy planos en ocasiones.
Pero de ahí en más, la novela tiene un buen misterio, un paraíso idílico y personajes centrales tienen su desarrollo y vertientes que quedan abiertas para las siguientes entregas

Not among my fave Scandi-suspense titles.
While I'm late coming to the party of this series (this was my first, and happy to see I'm not alone in picking it up midstream), I can see how the police team characters have an ever-evolving storyline with their relationships and personal challenges. But author Camilla Lackberg does it way better.

A quick read that kept my interest, this mystery/thriller is set in southern Sweden. I often don't like stories where the author goes back and forth between different periods of time, but in this case it works and makes the story even more interesting as the author teases out the backgrounds and sets the stage for a conclusion that I didn't see coming. For fans of Scandinavian crime fiction, this is one author to keep your eye on. Recommended.

Kauhea murhavyyhti jatkaa Gotlantiin sijoittuvaa dekkarisarjaa. Kirja piti otteessaan loppuun asti, enkä arvannut murhaajaa ennen kuin vuoden 1994 tapahtumat paljastettiin. Pidin kahdessa eri ajassa etenevästä tarinasta. Rikossarja oli kammottava ja sisälsi kaikkia hirveyksiä, joita jännittävältä nykydekkarilta odottaa. Hiukan ärsyttää Knutaksen ja Karinin suhteen muuttuminen, mutta se on kai vain minun ongelmani.

En la novena entrega los protagonistas se sumergen en el mundo de las motos y de los clubs de Harley-Davidson, en una trama doble que acaba coincidiendo casi al final. La autora sigue fiel a su estilo de capítulos cortos, lenguaje sencillo ,muchos diálogos y ritmo muy ágil .Me ha enganchado desde el primer momento y es muy entretenida porque mantiene el interés y la intriga hasta el final .Para mí, es el mejor de la saga por lo que le recomiendo sin duda .

Yhdeksäs Gotlanti-sarjan kirja. Tässä oli taas enempi mielestäni menoa ja meininkiä kuin esim. kahdeksannessa "Vaarallinen leikki" -osassa. Pankkiryöstö, moottoripyöräjengi ja vanha omakotitalossa tapahtunut perheen murhatapaus nivoutuvat yhteen. Ja vihdoin pääosapoliisien Karinin ja Knutasin suhde lämpenee!

I've enjoyed all of this series that takes place on Gotland, Sweden. Anders Knutas is the main character and is the lead detective on Gotland
This story goes back and forth between current events - a bank robbery and the hit and run of a child, while also dealing with the events in the past that got the bank robbers to where they are today.
A great read as always
