Interesting book about the treatment of the new rich Chinese entrepreneur under Xi Jinping. The take away offered by the book is that under the current Chinese president, those entrepreneur and their companies are under strong pressure to demonstrate loyalty toward the Communist Party of China, and align their priorities with those of the country.
The main take-away from the book that I got, is that indeed after experiencing unrestrained growth in a large, untapped and protected digital market, most of those companies and their owners fell under a more heavily supervised economic environement by the state. The CCP, under Xi Jinping, seems to wish to harness those new private markets forces toward national goal identified under their policies, seeing the profits made in consumer markets as a dsitraction from those goals. This aligned effectively with description of ongoing policies notably in Science & Technology, dual-circulation economy and more.
The book focus much however in presenting this phenomenon as one rectifying affront made to the "emperor" and its ego, and not much analysis on the wider policy environnement shift of China, beside a few allusion to it. In this sense the book tries much more to create some dramatic effect by enumarating a serie of cases displaying the treatment of ultrarich individuals in recent years under CCP rule.
I would find more interesting a real analysis, providing a overview of the policy wind changing or deeper analysis of documents available. A paralel that could be interested is the one described in "Capitalism with Chinese Characteristics: Entrepreneurship and the States", which descrived a boom in rural entreprises in the 80s, then culled and brought back to order where ressources were to focus more on urban entreprises instead. A number of Chinese entrepreneurs experiences similar fate as in this one.
Additionally, the author seem to have made this book mostly through accumulated snippets of newspapers and a few personal conversations, instead of primary source material or in-depth investigation. It is useful to know what made the news overall ; less to acquire a good understanding of the dynamics at play in the China of today.
