Indigo Bay #1

Sweet as Pie

Rate this book
Luca Moretti is grumpy—and he wouldn't have it any other way.

Wrangling six—Italian—siblings and the family's restaurants would make anyone cranky. But when his mother requests that he save his aunt’s struggling Italian deli in charming, picturesque Indigo Bay, he has no idea that he's about to get an overdose of sweetness.

Luca expected his aunt’s stubbornness—she’s a Moretti, isn’t she?—and his cousin’s resistance to actual work, but the last thing he expected is the absolute ball of sunshine known as Oliver Billings.

Oliver loves Indigo Bay. Loves owning his small artisan bakery, Sweetie Pie’s. Helps nice old ladies cross the street. Even volunteers for the local Sweethearts Festival.

Sweet isn't really Luca's style, or so he thinks. But when he discovers Oliver can be a little spicy too, his prickly exterior begins to crumble like a well-baked crust.

If Luca isn't careful, he's going to develop a taste for sweets—and a particular baker’s pie.

And one or two servings will never be enough.

My goodness what a lovely romantic book. From the first few pages, I never expected it to get better with each chapter. The beginning was way too chaotic for me and I was tempted to put it down right away. But the author is new to me, I really wanted to give it a chance and I didn't regret it. And probably the beginning should be so inharmonious anyway to show how not beautiful the life of Luca is.
I guess everyone needs an Oliver in their life. Oh, I have hearts in my eyes all over again, I cannot fall in love with every other character for real … and my goodness is the dynamic between the two off scale hot.

Luca liked sex, though he’d always assumed he had pretty vanilla tastes. But the idea of this guy hovering just out of touch, completely naked, as Luca groveled and begged for any scrap of attention, turned him on beyond belief. 😳

Luca, who normally hated mess, discovered his feelings about it greatly depended on who was making the mess. “You wanna come over tonight? Cook me dinner? Seduce me in my kitchen?”
“All of the above, yes,” Luca said.
🥰

Oliver propped his chin up on his arms, gaze staring right into Luca’s face, and he didn’t look freaked out at all.
He looked pleased. He looked happy.
That’s the look, Luca realized, you’re going to devote yourself to putting on his face for the rest of your life.

So cute. I have wanted Luca's story for SO LONG!!!!

Luca and Oliver were so well matched and it was nice to see there was more to Luca than his outward Ice King persona. I also liked the Gordon Ramsey Hell's Kitchen feel to the plot

My only gripe is the ending was a lot more abrupt than usual for a Beth Bolden book. I wasn't entirely sure how much time had passed before the epilogue, it was a bit vague. I wanted to know a bit more about if the deli had improved as that was Luca's reason for being there.

I did really like the cameos from Gabe and Ren from the Food Truck Warriors series, and even though this is technically a standalone it does still link into the rest of the Beth Bolden story world, which I am a massive fan of.

I'd also warn you not to read this book if you're hungry because the food descriptions are amazing and there are A LOT - a good excuse for reading snacks 😉

This book is such a tonic, it's filled with emotions and with all the feels as Luca Moretti finds out that he's maybe not irreplaceable to his family - and it's a good thing!

Sent to rescue an offshoot of the family's food related businesses, Luca finds himself in a sleepy small town in the charming, picturesque Indigo Bay, where his aunt's Italian deli is failing badly.

His path keeps clashing, quite literally sometimes, with local bakery and small café owner Oliver, who has returned to his home town where his mother runs the biggest B&B, which just happens to be where Luca is staying.

Long time readers of Beth's will recognise Luca as being Gabe from the Food Truck Warriors oldest brother, he's a sharp businessman with very little feelings - or so it seemed.

But not here, as he fights with his aunt's stubbornness, his cousin's unwillingness to be involved in the deli and falls in love with more than just Oliver's bread and pastries, Luca comes to realise that perhaps there's more to life than just being the best businessman he can be.

Luca's repression is driven by his desire to fulfil the legacy left to him by his Nonna, the beloved grandmother who's name is on all their businesses and whose recipes form the foundation of what makes them so successful.

Oliver is sunshine in human form, but he also feels the pressures of living in a town where everyone's known him since he was small.

Their attraction is instant, it grows through long conversations and over good food and Luca slowly unbends as he realises Oliver doesn't want to change him, he loves his drive and his ambition, his determination to succeed and not settle for less.

This is the best sort of grumpy/sunshine, opposites attract small town romance and I adored it.

This book was supposed to be an in between read to cleanse my palate of fantasy romances. I needed something sweet and fluffy but I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did! If you want a book that celebrates perfectionism in a good way, this is it. I have NO IDEA what 'competence porn' was until this book. 😂😂😂 Plus, don't get me started on all the food talk, cooking walkthroughs, and tasting scenes. You better publish the recipes. No recipes, not true! 🤣

Anyway, Luca's story gave me the feels. It was an in-depth look to a man who's used to micromanaging everything in the family, being the one in charge, and as a result, getting all the hate for it. He's a little misunderstood but he finally found a person who will not only see through all the walls but will understand that it is what makes the man he is and will not have it any other way. Oliver is sweet and nice but not a pushover. He can level with Luca when it comes to honesty and competency. Their temperament may be opposite of each other but they are very similar in a lot of ways and I love that.

I appreciate that this book has been a straightforward story from the very beginning. Expressive about their attraction and choose to talk it out even the hard topics relating to their 'non-relationship'. There's no miscommunication whatsoever and though some angst can help a story, I love that there's none here and the author just went with a simple relationship development, discovery of attraction, and admission of feelings. It made me tear up a few times and though I expected fluffy and sweet, it also gave me sadness and tears and it worked. This right here hurt my heart:

“You gonna put that on the menu?” Luca wondered.
Oliver didn’t need to ask what he meant. He knew.
“Seems like a good way to keep you around,” he said lightly, even though it was killing him.

It is hard to let go and lose your purpose but it shows that changes sometimes bring something better and that's exactly what Luca got eventually.

I don't know why it took me a few days since I received this copy from Beth Bolden's giveaway but I finally read it and loved it. Thank you!

This was a pretty sweet story and I have to admit that I came out of it a few pounds heavier because of all the pastries served. And the pasta that was served. And the sauces. Food in general. The love story was adorable, the small town was cute and it was an overall good time although I felt it was a little long. I like how Beth Bolden's books intertwine with her other series and you feel like you're in the same world so you don't miss anyone.

I enjoyed this book and was surprised that I hadn’t been as keen on the two other books I read by Beth Bolden. I love a story where one character is grumpy or strait laced and the other is all sunshine. That’s not exactly the case here because Oliver is a great businessman and certainly stands up to Luca when they first meet. I always appreciate it when there is no last minute break up. This is a sweet low angst book that was certainly filled with lots of good feelings. Any book that makes me feel so good I cry is a winner for me.

Feel Good Foodie Romance

I really loved this book. Beth makes you feel like a family member and you just want to be a part of the town and the people. What a sweet, satisfying read with just the right amount of snark, journey, and anticipation. I loved the chemistry and foundation of friendship between Luca and Oliver, and the way that blossomed into love and respect. I love food, and Oliver killed the whole idea of a buongustaio, Luca was definitely a connoisseur of good food. It was edgy, but the warm feel of the restaurant family, was lovely. I was easily swept up in the relationship , and emotional journey of our guys, and couldn’t put this down until I’d finished it. The plot's so upbeat, and it sweeps you away into the lives of Luca and Oliver, as they learn the importance of being true to one's self, family, friendship, trust, acceptance, and unconditional love. Loved it. 4.5 stars

I received an ARC of this story, which in no way influenced my opinion.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

This is a standalone book set somewhat adjacent to the author’s Food Truck Warrior’s series, two of which feature Luca’s brother and cousin falling in love over food. This story, though, isn’t part of a series and can be read without having read any of the author’s other books. Speaking of which, I have read a previous book of this author’s and had mixed feelings on the plotting, characterization, and writing. However, I am pleased to say that, with this book, I had a much better experience, especially with Luca.

I didn't expect getting Luca's story, but I'm pleased we get Luca's story. And with someone who gets him to boot!
Now, we have the roots of two more stories from the Moretti clan, and I for one would be pleased to get them

This is the first book I've read by this author and it's been such a delight. I absolutely loved the plot and the MCs, also the secondary characters were great and the small town setting was lovely.
Luca is in charge of his family restaurants. He's the oldest of his siblings and everyone seems to depend on him. He is loyal, competent and a perfectionist, which makes him quite grumpy. He flies to the other side of the country to help his aunt with her business and that's where he meets Oliver.
Oliver has a very successful bakery in a small town where everybody knows him and his family. He is sweet, responsible and loves his job, but he also tries to enjoy life and is always nice to people. Something that Luca doesn't do. They are quite the opposite but they feel attracted to each other from the first moment they meet and even though they try to set boundaries, they just throw caution out of the window and get deep into a relationship.
What a beautiful story this was. It's got so much sweetness, and not only because of the cakes and pastries, but because Luca and Oliver are exactly what the other needs in their lives. It's lovely to see how they get to know each other and I loved the way Oliver shows Luca that life is more than just working non-stop. The trip to the east coast helps Luca realise what he was missing in his life and the way they fall in love is adorable, because they both feel the pull but try to not act on it. Obviously, it's inevitable and they fall head over heels for each other.
This book is about love, finding the right place for yourself, learning to let go and understanding what the truly important things in life are. Luca and Oliver have stolen my heart as their story is so beautiful and romantic.

I swear, Beth's books just keep on being amazing! Luca and Oliver's story is no different, giving you just the right mix of sweetness, spiciness, and witty banter for the perfect recipe!

If you've read other books by Beth (and if you haven't, get on it), you first met Luca as Gabe's overbearing older brother in the Food Truck Warriors series. He's still very bossy, very involved in the family business, and very grouchy--especially when his mother sends him off to a small town in South Carolina to help save his aunt's failing deli. He doesn't have time to be away from the family businesses for so long when he runs everything, after all.

If you've met an Italian mother, you know that Luca is soon in Indigo Bay, South Carolina, dealing with equally stubborn relatives. He also keeps running into--literally--Oliver, a sweetheart with a spine of steel who runs a successful bakery/cafe in town. His baked goods are to die for, and while he is very nice, he gives as good as he gets, especially where Luca is involved. Sparks fly, and soon Luca is...unbending (as Ren puts it), and loving life in Indigo Bay--along with a particular resident. But his stay was always going to be temporary. Can he really give up running the family businesses to follow his heart?

As always, I fell in love with the characters pretty much immediately. Luca is rigid in bossy, but he's also had to be. He takes his role of carrying on the family legacy passed down from his Nonna very seriously (his family would say too seriously), and underneath that bossy exterior is a sweetheart who wants to love and be loved. And Oliver is a wonderfully sunshiney person who is often accused of being too nice, but he never lets anyone take advantage of him, and is unafraid to get tough when he needs to. Their chemistry was amazing, and I loved watching them fight their feelings only to fail miserably.

I also loved the way the plot unfolded, with a resolution that didn't have a conflict for conflict's sake. The two were mature adults who actually used their words, and I loved that! The only real quibble I have with the book is that end resolution felt kind of rushed, where things just perfectly lined up with no real things for anyone to work through. I also felt like the deli and Luca's relatives could have been a bigger part of the plot, but given how much I loved Luca and Oliver time, I'm not as upset about that!

Definitely recommend checking this book out if you love food, banter, and love!

I received a review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are for real and mine.

I absolutely loved Oliver, but Luca, well it took time for me to warm up to him. He definitely had a hard outer shell, but Oliver managed to break through to the softer side of him.

I loved listening to their conversations. We really got to know them through those, as they got to know one another, which made for well-developed characters.

This was a sweet romance, but I wouldn’t recommend reading it on an empty stomach… all the food!! This was an enjoyable read and Luca and Oliver had so much passion for their businesses, as well as for one another. Definitely recommendable!

Wow, another fantastic book! It might just be a new favorite. Watching Luca learn to let loose a bit is a thing of beauty. He was always locked down so tightly to make sure he kept up with the standards set down by Nonna, so loyal to her wishes.
Oliver is just as driven, but takes more joy in his work. His hometown is his life. He has the bakery and is busy with so many things.
I love the dynamic the two have together. The setting of the small town is just what Luca needed.
I love the Morettis, and Luca is my favorite of the bunch!

This (together with the Food Truck series ones) are not my favourite by the author but it was an ok read in the end. It's weird because I could not care less about sports and I love food (eating & cooking) but the sports themed books just do it for me in a way that the food books don't. Go figure.

This book was supposed to be a grumpy/sunshine romance, but it didn't really feel that way to me. Luca was supposed to be the grumpy one, but Oliver was far ruder the first few times they cross paths. Luca calls Oliver sweet early on, but I don't know where he would get that idea from their interactions. That said, once they start spending time together I enjoyed their interactions and straightforwardness.

I'll be honest, it took me a few tries to get into this book. I just couldn't connect with Lucas and didn't really like him at first. I put the book down and came back a few times and finally, the connection happened. Oliver was instant, such a sweet, wonderful guy. These two have their ups and downs but it feels real, like a real relationship not just a story. Both of these men are family men, and we grow to not only love them but also their family. This book gives you all the feels and makes you hungry at times too. LOL.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is such a fun (and sweet) read. I almost read it in one sitting, as I had to find out how things could be resolved!

Luca is a man on a mission – to make sure all his family and their businesses live up to the promise he made his Nonna, to keep them protected. He has done this relentlessly for years, and some of them have already made a bid for freedom, much to his dismay. When his mum asks him to go and help his aunt with their failing offshoot in a small town across country, he is reluctant, but complies.

Indigo Falls is not living at the pace of the West Coast, and this change is a shock to Luca's system – but his aunt and cousin's business practices are beyond shocking! They are, however, perfect at keeping him busy and in town whilst he gets to know the local baker, Oliver.

Oliver manages to combine an excellent business sense, wonderful baking skills, and a sweet and charming disposition – and he finds Luca irresistible.

The scene set, we get a fabulously fun and bakery heaven romance – and I enjoyed every minute!

Shannan – ☆☆☆☆
Luca has dedicated his life to making sure his family’s restaurants are doing well and would make his Nonna proud. When his aunt and cousin are having a hard time, his mom volunteers his help to see what they are doing wrong and get them back on track. Going to Indigo Falls isn't somewhere Luca wants to go but it's what he has to do for his family. Oliver owns the local bakery in Indigo Falls. He loves owning his own business. He's worked hard to turn his bakery into a success. When Luca and Oliver cross paths, sparks fly. The attraction is instant. Oliver is such sunshine and brings such happiness to everyone, including grumpy Luca.

I loved everything about this read. It was so sweet and emotional. I highly recommend this one!

Competence porn is totally a thing!

How do I know that a book will end up on my “to be re-read” list? The number of sentences, paragraphs or simply words I highlighted while reading it the first time. And this book has a lot of colourful highlights!!!

I hope Beth Bolden won’t mind if I use some of her words to describe these two very interesting characters:

Luca and Oliver “were both adults. They’d established their own businesses. They’d taken hits and experienced misses and learned what worked for them and what didn’t.” They were two perfectionist, but only because ”they both cared so deeply about food. It was an intrinsic part of their lives.”

Luca “Maybe he was an asshole. Maybe he was cocky and arrogant and way too certain of how things should be. But he also loved Oliver with every fiber of his being.”…”Luca’s confidence was nearly arrogance, but again, Oliver didn’t find it unattractive, when on any other person it would have been.”

I hope you got the point: these two men are just perfect for each other, because even an obnoxious, cocky, arrogant and way too certain of how things should be control freak like Luca may find his perfect match. Because “Here was someone, finally, who liked Luca for exactly who he was, didn’t want to change him, didn’t want him to behave differently, and wasn’t attracted to him for what he could bring to the table.” Oliver might be giving and kind and sweet as hell, but he is also driven, focused, and very observant (apparently bakers are better than bartenders at this). Don’t be fooled: Oliver might define himself as sweet, but I would use other words, like joyful, smiling, because sweet may be viewed as weak, when he is anything but.

Oliver and Luca are the epitome of a relationship that develops and flourishes because and thanks to very similar life and work experiences and expectations. No opposite attraction, but similarities as the foundation of trust. And where there is trust, there is the possibility to let go, to self-discovery and ultimately become a better version of one’s self. And this is exactly what Luca experienced by pursuing a relationship with Oliver though his time in Indigo Bay was limited (at first).

Even though this book is publicised as a stand alone, Luca is the big brother of Gabriel from “On the Roll”, and the cousin of Lorenzo of “Ride or Die”, both books belonging to the Food Truck Series by the same author. If you haven’t read the series yet, I highly recommend it, also because it will give you some additional background story when Gabe and Ren appear in this book.

I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of this book and Beth once again gifted me with wonderful hours of care free reading and escape.

It’s a must have and must read! Sweet As Pie is everything

Rating: 5🌈

Beth Bolden’s Sweet As Pie is everything I needed and all I love about contemporary romances. This genre is able to encompass so many different styles, elements, types of characters and storylines that I can choose right now between a beautifully written novel about grief and loss or this heartwarming tale of family, food, and two chefs in need of each other.

Bolden’s story called to my heart at the right time. Letting me know I needed her superbly written tale of a romantic journey between two lonely hardworking chefs. One from a large Italian family of California restaurateurs and the other a baker of exquisite pastries in a small South Carolina town , Indigo Cove, with a romantic legacy that bears his family name.

Luca Moretti, a family of restaurateurs we’ve met before in Food Truck Warriors, is instantly recognizable as the overworked (self induced) , tightly controlled brother who sees himself as the person who has sacrificed himself for his family. He’s intense and very stubborn.

And believable. I’m sure there’s some readers who are able to see him as someone they know. Bolden makes his personality and our ability to further understand him enlarge when he meets baker Oliver Billings.

Oliver, a genuine creative genius with baked goods and a fine businessman, understands Luca in a way his own family hasn’t been able to. Kindred spirits from opposite sides of the country.

They bond over food, Luca’s mission to save his aunt’s deli, their love of family with all its attending issues, and finally their love for each other.

I was so caught up in their love story, this small world of people, and , yes, the food they were creating, that I hardly noticed the time.

The author is able to pull me into this world so completely for so many reasons. One it’s her love of her subject matter. Not love, but food.

Beth Bolden is an excellent conveyor of her passion for food and its chefs. Whether she’s writing about bakers or sous chefs, chefs in fine restaurants or those madly cooking fare in food trucks, it always feels, passionate, authentic , exhilarating, with the aromas and , yes, flavors, coming through the pages.

I’ve drooled while reading these pages.

And her characters are rich with warmth, lively with humor, living, breathing human beings that capture your heart and mind.

This is a book that will be a comfort read for me. Give it a chance. I bet it will be for you too.

It’s a must have and must read!

Sweet As Pie is everything!

It is no a secret by now that I am a big fan of Beth Bolden's books and one thing that she does, and that I absolutely love, is to intertwine characters from her different series or, as in this case, bring us Luca, who is Gabe's brother in one of her Food Trucks books and who we think of as the "bad" guy in that story, but like everything in life, each person has their version of how they live it and why.

Here we see that he is just a man dedicated to his family, who out of fear of disappointing them and above all, disappointing his grandmother, who is no longer here but remains a strong presence for him. He learned everything he knows about cooking from her, and she, perhaps without realizing it, was the one who caused him to carry the weight of family and business on his shoulders from a very young age, practically forgetting how to enjoy life, and making him to look cold and uptight on the outside, but lonely and beleaguered on the inside.

But then, on a trip to help his aunt with her restaurant, he meets Oliver. He is almost the opposite of Luca. I mean, he's dedicated to his bakery, has plans to expand it, and hasn't taken a vacation in years. But the difference is that Oliver does it for himself, for his own growth, enjoying the process step by step despite the difficulties that may arise and the fatigue. And despite so much work, he tries to enjoy the little things in life, even if he doesn't have much time to meet someone. He is much more carefree and easy going than Luca, but nevertheless, it is all these differences that make that spark of attraction they feel since day one grow and grow. Oliver wants to show him that there is much more to life than work and obligations, and Luca wants to absorb as much of that happiness that he feels every time he is around Oliver.

Of course, obstacles don't take long to appear, first and foremost, the fact that they both live on opposite sides of the country. And now they must decide what is more important, family, or that love that only comes once in a lifetime.

I was given an advanced copy and wrote voluntarily a review.

Weird dialogue in here. Like after Luca and Oliver had sex for the first time, Oliver randomly brought up Giana? Then the conversation went back to staying over like it was the same topic. There was head jumping that made things confusing (going from Oliver to Luca's POV or vice versa w/o separations). And this author seems to like doing two separate topics in one conversation a lot. Made for some awkward dialogue that I had to re-read to understand.

I also do not understand the dynamic between Luca and Giana. Why is she so combative when he's literally the one who has control over the restautant given he manages the family's money? Why doesn't Luca just force her out?

Also I don't understand Luca's weird character arc. It's implied that he's supposed to learn how to let other people manage things, but like they way we're introduced to him is his family just asking him for help all the time. At what point was he supposed to learn that they could be independent? How are they suddenly able to manage the restaurants given how he was the one that's been doing it all these years?

Oliver was a little better, though not by much. Why does he sometimes call his mom Joy? I thought they were two different people because of that. What up with him auto-magically understanding Luca's deepest anxieties?

Insta-love, bleh. Oliver suddenly can't imagine aluca leaving after one night of sex? Luca supposedly breaking rules by asking Oliver to stay the night (it's not a charactee trait if you break it before even showing us that you're aloof towards sexual partners). Oliver's mom even talks to him about it, but he's already fallen for Luca like two weeks in.

All in all, this book was alright. I felt like Oliver and Luca understood each other too quickly, Giana was just weird, the dialogue was incredibly awkward, but the book didn't commit any cardinal sins for me so it's alright. 2.5/5 rounded up.

I had so much fun with this book. I come from a tight-knit Italian family, so the familial dynamics resonated with me. I  enjoyed this lighthearted romance that liberally added amazing Italian food I could practically taste.

This is a story of a grumpy businessman and a baker who is a ray of sunshine. Those looking at the stern, disciplined Luca and kind-hearted Oliver saw only these traits. The author allowed us to see the real personalities. Mr. Grumpy wasn’t that severe and actually had a soft side, while the sunshine guy had a strong backbone and was very determined. I loved their relationship, and even though they were together for a short time, their connection was so intense it felt so much longer.

Luca is sent on a rescue mission to help his aunt in South Carolina save her family deli. It kills Luca to leave his family business in California, which includes an extremely successful restaurant. He is the go-to guy. There isn’t a problem he can’t or won’t tackle. His large family has become somewhat complacent with his competency, and at the same time, this has caused resentment. It’s hard being the one making the major decisions and always being right.

Oliver runs a very successful bakery and has very deep roots in his hometown. After an awkward first meeting with Luca, the two find their kindred spirits and soon can’t get enough of each other. The courtship was sweet, but they both knew going in it was only temporary. How can Luka leave his family to run their chaotic business, but Oliver is such a temptation?

Families are complex, and so are relationships. Can the two men work out the details for their own slice of happiness? The story was a perfect romance and just plain made me feel good. I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did. Happy reading!

A low angst romance spoiled by a secondary storyline with the horrible family members. 2.5* because the ending was weak and the relatives made me so grumpy I don't wish to read more books with them.

To be fair this is the first book I have read in the series. We are supposed to know the Moretti family already. But I did not have that frame of reference and I truly disliked most of them. I did like Luca. Luca has been in charge of Moretti's restaurants and is driven, intense, and perhaps a bit grumpy. Apparently in an earlier book his brother and him have stopped talking and the brother has moved away. In this book Luca is sent away by his parents on almost no notice. His aunt and cousin have run their Moretti Deli into the ground and need a competent person to come help them. Yet somehow this is also supposed to be a vacation for Luca. I can't decide if his parents don't care about him or are simply stupid. Perhaps a little of both.

Luckily for Luca he meets Oliver. I really liked Luca and Oliver together. Sadly they did not have as much page time as I wanted. There were plenty of nice times for them. There are no big misunderstandings between them. Instead we are treated to more family stupidity. I didn't mind his aunt and cousin being pills. This was explained and made sense. Luca dealt with them extremely patiently although he was stubborn. What I did object to was the rest of them in California refusing to answer Luca's texts because they decide he should not worry about things back home. And there were some weak explanations when he gets home and a single apology from his father about something that occurred long before this book takes place. But of course they are the wonderful family of these books so all is washed away just because they are awesome and delightful. Not that I saw them being this way but Oliver declares it so. Bah. Not for me.

No/Low relationship angst
Grumpy/Sunshine
Cinnamon rolls (the guys, not the food 😊)
Temporary/casual relationship
Baker + Family Fixer (who also cooks)
Medium spice
Dual third person POV

What can I say? I stayed up into the wee hours of a Monday night to finish this. I love Beth's books but her standalones are always incredible, and this one is no exception. This book is going directly to the top of my favorites list.

Luca and Oliver are both workaholics. Luca is a bit of a hardass since he's the family "fixer" and Oliver is "too nice" since he's all empathy and heart. Somehow, though, these two share enough qualities to make them perfect for one another. They're honest with each other and, yeah, even themselves although neither man is willing to push the other out of his comfort zone in pursuit of a long term relationship. I respect that. Relationships are about compromise and if you aren't willing to change your path for love then it's not fair to ask that of someone else. Surprisingly sweet!

The families, dates, and spice were also great. I'm one for plot over sex but I think the balance was pretty spot on for both here. The men and the plot had depth! Am I surprised? Of course not, I read Beth's books for a reason - she's on point when it comes to love stories.

There's a VERY light D/s element in one scene and it was done VERY well. I'm extremely critical of BDSM in literature (because I adore and understand it) and I'll admit I was terrified when I saw it coming. I've not read anything BDSM related from Beth and it's been my experience that authors tend to get it wrong, so yeah, I worried. But *wow* I'm impressed, Beth, you did great. Thank you.

I recommend a thousand times over
