Elemental Assassin #19.6

Spider and Frost

Rate this book
New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Estep delivers an epic team-up featuring beloved characters from her Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series and her Mythos Academy young adult series. This crossover novella, Spider and Frost, mixes magic and mythology in an action-packed adventure. Perfect for fans of Ilona Andrews, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Rick Riordan.

WHEN AN ASSASSIN . . .

My name is Gin Blanco, and I’m on vacation. Sort of. As the assassin the Spider, it’s hard for me to completely relax, but I’m determined to enjoy a scenic train ride and a nice, quiet lunch before heading back home to Ashland.

My plans change when Gwen Frost boards the train. The girl says she’s heading back to Mythos Academy, the fancy private boarding school, but I can’t shake the feeling that Gwen is hiding something—and is in far more trouble than she realizes.

. . . MEETS A CHAMPION

My name is Gwen Frost. I might have saved the world from Loki, the evil Norse god of chaos, but I’m still chasing down Reaper villains. It’s all part of being the Champion of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory.

I’ve been assigned to protect some mythological artifacts that are being transported via train to Mythos Academy, but some Reapers are hot on my trail, and they’ll do anything to recover the artifacts—and kill me.

Also on the train is Gin Blanco, who claims to be the owner of the Pork Pit barbecue restaurant. My psychometry magic keeps whispering that there’s more to her than meets the eye, although I can’t tell if Gin is a friend, an enemy, or something else entirely.

Note: Spider and Frost is a 28,000-word crossover novella between the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series and the Mythos Academy young adult series. It is told from the points of view of Gin Blanco and Gwen Frost.

Spider and Frost takes place after the events of Last Strand, book 19 in the Elemental Assassin series.

Jennifer Estep has released an interesting novella set in both of her well-known series. If you’re a fan of the Elemental Assassin series and her Mythos Academy series, then you’re in for a treat because in this unique crossover novella, we get both kickass heroines in one story!

Merging the two worlds is such an interesting idea and since I’m a fan of both series, I was really excited to see Estep do this. The story is told from of the two main heroine’s POVs so it was nice to see how each of them think. It’s also a great way to be introduced to the other series if you haven’t tried it before. Since the Elemental Assassin series is an Urban Fantasy series geared toward adult readers and the Mythos Academy series is a Young Adult Fantasy series, I think the crossover is great for readers who are maturing or just wanting to try something different!

I really enjoyed this story and its uniqueness. If you haven’t read any of these series yet, then here’s your chance to do so. Although you probably won’t appreciate it as much as someone who has read and followed both series through the course of the years, I think it’s good enough to spark new interest in those who want to try something new.

A fun but super quick, bloody romp in the life of both Gin from Ms. Estep’s Elemental Assassin series and Gwen from her Mythos Academy series. It is a great way to bring both together while introducing each to the other’s world.

SPIDER AND FROST is a crossover novella featuring the Elemental Assassin & Mythos Academy series. To avoid any and all confusion, as well as spoiling the story, I suggest being up-to-date on both series. Both are amazing series in their own right, highly entertaining. Don't miss out on the journey by reading this crossover novella without reading both series from start to finish.

I adore crossover stories, especially when I was a fan of both series. Highly entertaining to watch Gin & Gwen interact with one another, the story told in dual-POV. Our favorite fierce ladies are on the same path, attempting to stop Reapers with their magics, but they just don't trust one another at first. So it was beyond fun to watch them get to know one another. They make the best of partners, each bringing something different to the table, balancing their strengths and weaknesses.

Read in one sitting, exciting yet lighthearted, the pages turned quickly. Not that the story wasn't satisfying, but I do wish it was longer than a novella, simply because I enjoyed Gin & Gwen teaming up so much. I hope we get more stories from this pairing.

I will say, if you read this novella, before your reach the end, you'll be hankering to start both series from the beginning. A tall order, but I'm already planning to do just that when I get a chunk of free time.

I loved this crossover between Jennifer Estep's two series. The Elemental Assassin series is one of my all time favourite series - I just love Gin and everything she has gone through to become who she now is. I haven't read all of the Mythos Academy series, but reading this novella has made me realise that I need to finish that one up too!

When Gin and Gwen randomly meet on a train tour, there are initial suspicions from both sides, but Gin being the more life experienced of the two, soon realises that Gwen is involved in some kind of trouble and is determined to find out what that trouble is and to help her out with it if she can.

I loved how these two worlds were so far apart, but merged together so well in this book. Gin had no idea what all this mythology and champions stuff was about and the talking sword completely threw her and then Gwen had no idea what being an assassin really meant and what the title The Spider was all about either. It was great to see some understanding between the two of them and the start of a great friendship too.

Hopefully we'll see another crossover at some point (and hopefully by then I will have finished reading the Mythos Academy series too!)

This was a fun cross-over. I liked that it was in a neutral place for both Gin and Gwen. It was fun to see each of them sort of give the side eye to the other before they got on the train. I did like how Gin thought Gwen was someone who needed help and stuck close to her. It was fun to see them do the small talk thing you do with strangers, superficial getting to know each other. Things really picked up with Gin realized Gwen was in danger and stepped in. At that point it seemed like things went wrong fast, but with Gin being who she is, it was a bit of a pause as she got back to rights and then got back to doing what she is great at, killing.

It was so funny as Gin kept going on about how she was "The Spider" to Gwen and others from her world and that meant nothing to them. Gin was a bit thrown when the sword started to talk and other things she heard said by Gwen and the bad guys. Things got really interesting when Gwen and Gin ended up switching blades, Gin got the talking sword and Gwen got one of Gin's silverstone knives and so much of Gin's history just by touching it. That ended up being a good thing for Gwen, gave her the edge she needed in her fight.

The after math was just as fun as these 2 groups of people met and started talked and explaining their worlds. Lots of eyes being opened. I'd love to see Gwen and her people stop by The Pork Pit for a meal and see Gin turn up at the library for help. More cross-overs would be great fun!

*Thoughts*

Jennifer Estep's Spider and Frost is a 28,000-word crossover novella between the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series and the Mythos Academy young adult series. It is told from the points of view of Gin Blanco and Gwen Frost. Spider and Frost takes place after the events of Last Strand, book 19 in the Elemental Assassin series. If you have read the Elemental Assassin series, you know that Gin has retired...sort of. She and her sister Bria, along with Finn and Owen are on vacation but the vacation turns into just another day at the office for Gin after a rock slide derails her plans and she is forced to ride the train alone to her next destination.

A crossover novella in two series by Jennifer Estep: 19.6 in the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series and 6.5 in the young adult Mythos Academy paranormal fantasy series revolving around Gin Blanco and Gwen Frost.

My Take
Estep is using first person dual protagonist points-of-view from Gin’s and Gwen’s perspectives. It is too funny how each sees the other as needing their protection. Who knew two such different “cultures” could live so close to each another and not know of their existence!?

Gin is certainly shocked that no one knows her reputation as the Spider! *Snicker* It’s a memory-filled story for Gin which allows Estep to fill us in on a lot of background; some of it is info-dumping, ahem. I also suspect some of it is useful filler.

Ooh, don’t the bad guys know not to diss each other? Especially when you’re family. Talk about a cliché with plenty more to come. They certainly are a cocky bunch — they left the labeling on the artifact crates!

It’s also cute how Estep pulls in references to her other series, including Cloudburst Falls in Black Blade and Bigtime.

Hmm, I wonder how the spider rune pattern Gwen refers to will tie into Minerva’s Dagger . . . A future crossover story?? As for Gwen’s psychometry . . . talk about good luck, lol!

More laughter ensues with the bickering between Gin’s friends and Gwen’s gang on the other side of the mountain . . . where that avalanche just happened to occur.

We’re re-introduced to Gin and Gwen with that careful assessment they do of each other with a lot of action to reinforce it.

The Story
Gwen and her fellow students and instructors from the Mythos Academy have recovered the artifacts, but the trick is getting these powerful objects back to the museum.

Who knew that a good deed would change everyone’s plans!?

The Characters
From Elemental Assassin
Gin Blanco, a.k.a. the Spider, is an assassin and the owner of the Pork Pit, a barbecue restaurant in Ashland, North Carolina. She’s also a Stone and Ice elemental. Her significant other is Owen Grayson, a Metal elemental. Detective Bria Coolidge is Gin’s younger sister and a cop with the Ashland PD. She’s involved with Finnegan “Finn” Lane, Gin’s foster brother and an investment banker obsessed with clothes. Fletcher Lane had been Finn’s dad and an assassin who originally owned the Pork Pit; he took Gin in when she was a homeless child. Silvio Sanchez, a vampire, is Gin’s personal assistant. Sophia Deveraux has an Air gift and is the cook at the Pork Pit. Eira Snow had been Gin and Bria’s mother, Annabella their older sister.

Mason Mitchell had been Gin and Bria’s evil uncle who killed Tristan, his own brother and Gin and Bria’s father and the head of the Circle, an evil secret society. Mab Monroe, with a Fire gift, had been part of the Circle and a murderer.

From Mythos Academy
Gwen Frost, an Oracle with a psychometric gift, is the Champion for Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. Vic is her talking sword. Gwen’s grandmother, Grandma Frost, is also an Oracle. Grace Frost, a police detective, had been Gwen’s mother.

Logan Quinn, a Spartan warrior, is Gwen’s boyfriend. Daphne Cruz is Gwen’s Valkyrie best friend and a computer genius. Other students include Carson Callahan, Oliver Hector, and Alexei Sokolov.

The teachers from the Academy who are with them include Coach Ajax, Nickamedes (the academy’s librarian in the Library of Antiquities and Logan’s uncle), and Professor Metis.

The Protectorate is the mythological police force in Mythos Academy and is headed up by Logan’s dad, Linus Quinn.

Reapers are the bad guys who stole dozens of artifacts, including the jewel-encrusted Minerva’s Dagger, from the Crius Coliseum. Brayden Vitales, a Roman warrior, thinks he’s the leader of the Dolos Crew; Rosie; and, Dennis and George, who are Vikings. Covington lost. Argona Quinn had been Logan’s evil ex-stepmother — doesn’t say much for Linus’ intelligence. Vivian Holler had been Loki’s Champion.

Pine Crest is a charming town in the Appalachian Mountains where people escape for a vacation. Pine Crest Resort is luxurious and Pine Crest Train Station is the starting point for a scenic train ride to Cypress Mountain Winifred is the conductor on the train.

The Cover and Title
The cover is apropos with the front of the train coming right at us in this misty mountainous track in soft grays. I did like the spider rune in yellow and orange on the front of the engine! The title is just below this in an orange-rimmed yellow. Below that is the series info in a paler yellow.

The title is succinct, for it is about Spider and Frost.

A scenic train ride?

What great fun! Fans of either or both of these series will love this short trip with Gwen and Gin. A vacation interrupted and a rescue mission derailed won’t stop these two from saving the day once more!

If you like one of Jennifer Estep's series, and you wonder if you would like the other, this book is for you. Otherwise, honestly, it's not got much to recommend it. The story is very generic -- main characters get separated via plot shenanigans from their typical cohort, come upon one another, and help each other out of a tight spot and gain respect for one another. There's not even any explanation of how two vastly different magic systems somehow coexist without either of them having ever heard of the other, within a short geographical distance (the author even quips via one of the characters deciding "not to worry too much about it" and comparing it to a time travel story where if you think too hard about it the whole story unravels). I, personally, detest those kinds of stories, so that lost a full star on this one.

Spider and Frost by Jennifer Estep is a novella set in our two wonderful series, Elemental Assassin and Mythos Academy. I really got a kick out of Gin and Gwen getting to know each other, and learning what each can do. It was lots of fun.

At the start, Gin Blanco (the Spider) is waiting at the train station, for her friends, Owen, Fin and Bria, as they are on vacation; but a rockslide has caused the others to be late; they tell Gin to take the scenic train ride anyway, and enjoy the ride.

Gwen Frost is also watching out for her friends (Logan, Daphne, and others), who have also been slowed down by the rockslide. Gwen has been assigned to protect a number of mythological artifacts, which are on the train, on the way to Mythos Academy.

Gin sees Gwen on the train, and gets vibes that she is possibly in danger, and decides to go into her section, just in case she may need help. When the train starts off, Gwen notices some of her Reaper enemies, who are determined to steal back the artifacts. In a short period, Gin and Gwen do become friends, knowing they will help each other. When the Reapers attack, Gin is injured, with Gwen thinking she is dead; and is captured by the Reapers.

What follows is a wild, exciting, battle with both Gwen and Gin fighting together to defeat the enemy. I really loved Gwen trying to save herself, using Gin’s special knife and Gin using Vic (Gwen’s magical sword). Gwen also used her psychometry magic to learn more about the amazing Gin Branco. They really made a great team, and I would love to see more of them working together.

Spider and Frost was a fun, exciting, action-filled, fast read and very well written by Jennifer Estep. I really enjoyed seeing Gin and her friends, as well as Gwen and her own friends. They did make a great team, and should be fun if they ever meet again (Jennnifer-?) to fight all enemies. If you are fans of either series, you should read this novella.

This crossover novel has Gin Blanco and Gwen Frost as seatmates on a railroad trip that was almost derailed by Reapers (if you've read the Mythos Academy or its spin-off series, you already know that Reapers are the bad guys*) trying to kill both Gin and Gwen.

Gin Blanco, AKA the Spider, is an assassin from Asheville, a city that has vampires, giants, trolls, and humans with elemental powers.

Gwen Frost is an Oracle with psychometric powers going to the Mythos Academy, a school for Valkyries, Spartans, Vikings, and other powerful persons, and gods and goddesses of all persuasions.

Accidentally, these two meet and end up joining forces when some mythological artifacts are under attack (for lack of a better word).

Neither one understands the other's worldview, but they both learn to trust the other.

Like other of Jennifer Estep's books, there are references (Easter eggs) to some of her other series. There's also sound effects and some of the same language as seen (read) in each of the individual series (for example, "bad, bad feeling" in the Mythos Academy) based on whose perspective the chapter is from.

Having read both series (Mythos Academy was my first introduction to the author's writing), I am pretty sure there is a huge continuity issue. I seem to remember Gwen and her grandmother have eaten the Pork Pit barbecue even if the restaurant was still owned by Fletcher at the time. Still for those who have not had the pleasure of reading either series, this is a great introduction to both of them (and even the Bigtime series is mentioned with Karma Girl comics among other references). Fiona Fine

Enjoyed it immensely and recommend any of the author's novels, YA or adult.

Series: Elemental Assassin #19.6; Mythos Academy #6.5
Rating: 5 stars - I loved it!

As someone who has read all of Estep’s urban fantasy books, I was so excited when this book was announced. I have been wanting a crossover book between these two series since I read the Mythos Academy books and realized it was in the same universe as the Elemental Assassin books. Well this book did not disappoint!

This book is a dual POV novella with Gin (Elemental Assassin) and Gwen (Mythos Academy) doing what they do best: killing people and stopping the Reapers from gaining artifacts. I loved getting to see these two meet and become friends. They started out suspicious of each other but when things happen, they quickly realize they can trust each other. The battle scene was fantastic and it made me want to see these two fighting together again in the future.

Overall, this was an absolutely fantastic crossover! Gin and Gwen make a perfect team and could learn so much from each other. I really want more stories with these two now because this novella just wasn’t enough for me.

I don't know how I keep letting myself get suckered by Jennifer Estep. It is time to just admit it-- she's not very good.

The tone of her writing is juvenile. Her characters not only sound much younger than they really are; they also have a tendency to share generic features. Gin Blanco has ice magic, in much the same way as the protagonist of Estep's "Crush the King" series is a "Winter Queen." Estep likes to give her main characters ice aesthetics, or ice-themed powers, as well as some sort of immunity/invulnerability when she can. And if it were just an aesthetics thing, or a shared powers thing, that might be okay. But, it's so much worse than that.

This particular short story is as generic as can be. Two protagonists from different series written by this author encounter each other. Their magic systems are completely different. One character relies entirely upon mythological empowerment via various gods or other mythological figures. The other has "elemental" magic, which is relatively common in her world. Neither protagonist has ever heard of the other's magic system, even though they apparently live in the same universe and within a fairly close geographic region.

This is not the first time Estep has done this. I picked up one book in yet another, unrelated series of hers set in "Bingtown," once. The premise of that universe was that stereotypical superheroes were real, each with a different, unrelated (and non-elemental) power. Then, I noticed in one of the later Elemental Assassin books, Gin made a passing reference to fashion from a fashion designer character out of Bingtown. Which means that ALL of these magic systems exist in the same universe.

Estep's world building is just bad. Even if Gin Blanco's world were limited to just the elements that appear exclusively within the Elemental Assassin books, it makes no sense that characters are randomly born with elemental powers, and no one questions how/why this happens. There are no magic academies to train people with these powers, there are no specific licensing requirements to use the powers, there are no religious sects that praise these powers as having allegedly come from a divine being (whether rightfully or just as a matter of dogma). There is nothing. The author just did a bad job of explaining the magic system.

Then, to randomly throw in any other magic system that the author feels like, from unrelated series? That's just insulting to the reader.

And her dialogue and story structure is just bad.

Crossover story between the Elemental Assassin series and the Mythos Academy series. I’ve read all the Assassin books but haven’t gotten to the Mythos ones yet. Going to have move those to the top of my ‘to-read’ list now.

At the end of their vacation, the assassin Gin gets separated from her group by a landslide, causing her to travel on the final tourist expedition train by herself. The Champion Gwen Frost is using the same train to return to the Academy when she to gets cut off from her group. The two end up fighting together against the Reapers. Neither one knows about the others special worlds: magic and myth.

Fave scenes: Gin arriving into the baggage car and Gwen using the knife.

I was so excited to learn that Estep was doing a crossover between Mythos Academy and Elemental Assassins. I absolutely loved both series and this crossover did not disappoint! Written in dual POV from both Gwen (Mythos) and Gin (Elemental) it was great to see both these gals in their element kicking Reaper butt and becoming friends in the process while saving the day.

Great fight scenes, snark, mystery, action, suspense, Vic’s (the talking sword) droll comments, humor, and more – it couldn’t get any better. Lots of thrills and excitement in this fun novella. It’d be great to see more crossovers with these two and their friends in the future. Loved every minute of it!

I loved this latest edition and how the 2 cross-overed. This was an amazing read that grabbed me and kept me reading until the end. I could not get enough. It moves along at a pace that works perfectly for the flow of the story. No matter what happens you will love these characters and you want to be there for them and see them overcome whatever gets in there way. This book is a must read, no doubt about it.

When two worlds collide, it could end up in an explosion. When Spider and Frost meet, it is the perfect synergy for a dynamic duo. As a fan of the Spider series, I was mixed coming into this story because I didn't read the Frost series. The YA aspect of Frost didn't appeal to me. I was pleasantly surprised and now I want to pick up the Frost series to read about that world.

Once upon a time (mid 10s) I used to read pretty much nothing but urban fantasy and then I had kind of had my fill. But I will never have enough of Gin Blanco, little white pills* and all. Gwen Frost I'm less keen on as YA isn't my bag.

I'm trying to do more rereading this year and Gin Blanco's world will definitely be revisited. Estep writes a superb fight scene and these books are just my ultimate comfort reads.
