People widely considered Asimov, a master of the genre alongside Robert Anson Heinlein and Arthur Charles Clarke as the "big three" during his lifetime. He later tied Galactic Empire and the Robot into the same universe as his most famous series to create a unified "future history" for his stories much like those that Heinlein pioneered and Cordwainer Smith and Poul Anderson previously produced. He penned "Nightfall," voted in 1964 as the best short story of all time; many persons still honor this title. He also produced well mysteries, fantasy, and a great quantity of nonfiction. Asimov used Paul French, the pen name, for the Lucky Starr, series of juvenile novels.
Most books of Asimov in a historical way go as far back to a time with possible question or concept at its simplest stage. He often provides and mentions well nationalities, birth, and death dates for persons and etymologies and pronunciation guides for technical terms. Guide to Science, the tripartite set Understanding Physics, and Chronology of Science and Discovery exemplify these books.
Asimov, a long-time member, reluctantly served as vice president of Mensa international and described some members of that organization as "brain-proud and aggressive about their IQs." He took more pleasure as president of the humanist association. The asteroid 5020 Asimov, the magazine Asimov's Science Fiction, an elementary school in Brooklyn in New York, and two different awards honor his name.

সমুদ্রের সাথে মানুষের সম্পর্ক অনেক অনেক পুরোনো। একে ঘীরে গড়ে উঠেছে সভ্যতা, পাড়ি দিয়ে জয় করেছে নতুন সব স্থান, আবার ব্যবসা বাণিজ্যের প্রধান পথ এটাই। একে ঘীরে আগ্রহেরও কমতি নেই মানুষের। কিন্তু মহাকাশ নিয়ে আমরা যতটা জানি, সমুদ্র সম্পর্কিত জ্ঞান আমাদের তার চেয়েও কম। কি আছে এই অতল সমুদ্রে, তা নিয়ে আগ্রহ বা প্রশ্ন আছে সবার মনেই।
এই প্রশ্নের উত্তরে মানূষ অক্লান্ত কাজ করে গেছে যুগে যুগে। পৃথিবীর ২/৩ অংশ জুড়ে থাকা বিশাল জলরাশিকে আমরা বুঝতে শিখেছি গত কয়েক শতক ধরে। আমাদের এই জানতে শেখার ইতিহাসকে তুলে ধরেছেন আইজ্যাক আসিমভ, তার "How did we find out the deep sea" বইতে। বইটার সূচনা হয়েছে সমুদ্র কি এবং স্থলপৃষ্ঠের অগভীর জলীয় স্থান থেকে কতটা ভিন্ন, তা নিয়ে। এরপর রয়েছে গভীর সমুদ্র অনুসন্ধান এর ইতিহাস আলোচনা থেকে গভীরতা পরিমাপে প্রথম সাবমেরিন তৈরি প্রচেষ্টার ইতিহাস। গভীর সমুদ্র অনুসন্ধানে রয়েছে হাজারে চ্যালেঞ্জ, উচ্চ চাপ, নিন্ম তাপমাত্রা, আলোকবিহীন এক পরিবেশকে জানার। এবং গড়ে ওঠা জীববৈচিত্র্যকে নিয়ে মানুষের অধির আগ্রহের কথা।
বইয়ের একটা ভালো বিষয় হলো, এটা সহজ ভাষায় লেখা। ছোটো থেকে শুরু করে সবাই পড়তে পারবে। ক্রিটিসিজম কিছু জায়গায় করা যায়, তবে তা অনুবাদের সীমাবদ্ধতা লেগেছে। অনেক জায়গায় তুলনামূলক ভালো শব্দ ব্যবহার করা সম্ভব হতো, বা বাক্যগুলা আরেকটু ভালো সাজানো যেত বলে মনে হয়েছে। বানান সংশোধন প্রমিত ভাষা অনুযায়ী হলে আরেকটু ভালো লাগত। সাথে যদি সমুদ্র নিয়ে সর্বশেষ আবিষ্কারের একটা ছোয়া থাকত অনুবাদক হিসেবে, মন্দ হতো না।
সমুদ্র নিয়ে বাংলাতে বিস্তারিত কাজের জায়গা আছে মনে করি, কারণ খুব বেশি লেখা বাংলাতে দেখা যায় না। আশা করা যায় আগামিতে আরও অনেক লেখা আমরা দেখতে পাব।

যে জীবন সমুদ্রের বইয়ে সহজ ভাষায় ব্যাখ্যা করা হয়েছে কীভাবে মানুষ ধীরে ধীরে গভীর সমুদ্রের জীবন সম্পর্কে জেনেছে। একসময় ধারণা ছিল গভীর সমুদ্র নিঃজীব, কিন্তু গবেষণা ও সাবমেরিন অভিযানের মাধ্যমে দেখা যায় সেখানে সূর্যালোক ছাড়াও নানা ধরনের প্রাণী বেঁচে থাকে।
বইটি কিশোরদের উপযোগী হলেও যে কেউ পড়ে গভীর সমুদ্র ও বিজ্ঞানচর্চা সম্পর্কে আগ্রহী হতে পারেন। অনুবাদ সহজ, সাবলীল ও অনুপ্রেরণাদায়ক।
যদিও বইটি এখনকার আধুনিক আবিষ্কারের তুলনায় কিছুটা পুরনো, তবে ইতিহাসভিত্তিক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি এখনো প্রাসঙ্গিক এবং শিক্ষণীয়। সমুদ্রবিজ্ঞানের প্রাথমিক ধারণা পেতে এটি একটি দারুণ বই।

This was really enjoyable! I really knew nothing about this so I learned a lot. I had not known how important the ocean currents are in supporting life. This is quite concerning since Scientists are now afraid Climate Change might lead to the halting of some or all of the currents. Highly recommended if you are wondering where to start exploring this subject!
