It is the largest faith in the world, spans the globe, and stretches back in time nearly two thousand years. We are, of course, talking about Christianity.
Today, the dominance of the Christian faith appears to be a readily accepted fact. But back when it first rose to prominence, for most outside observers, such an idea would have seemed highly unlikely.
From its inception, Christianity was persecuted and hounded. Christians often paid a high price for their faith. They met underground and even in graveyards. They were misunderstood, and their message to outsiders seemed hopelessly strange and muddled. Back then, no one could have imagined that this “cult,” which often met in secret, small groups, would one day have huge churches and an even larger global presence.
Yet, despite the odds, Christianity proved to be unstoppable. How did such a thing happen? From the perspective of a believer, the answer to that question is quite the divine hand of God was at work. But even if one does not subscribe to the Christian faith, there are certain aspects of Christianity that stand out and can be used as mile-markers as to how and why Christianity came to take such a prominent place in world history.
This book takes a look at the full history of Christianity, from its earliest days as a persecuted sect to its acceptance and formalization at the Council of Nicaea to the Middle Ages, the Enlightenment, and the subsequent modern age.

A global faith that has been in existence for 2,000+ years, Christianity has a fascinating hard-won beginning and a perpetual endurance. But despite the brutality, persecution, and difficulties throughout history, it has flourished and grown. Believers know why. But even the unbeliever should realize that this entire movement is a part of history, documented in the secular history books.
The author here promises to take readers through a look at the full history of Christianity, from its earliest days as a persecuted sect to its acceptance and formalization at the Council of Nicaea to the Middle Ages, the Enlightenment, and the subsequent modern age.
There appears to be in this text a prevailing secular bias on the part of the author. The scholars he invokes seem to be presenting more of a secular and not a theological point of view. As such, if you are seeking information from a religious perspective, this would not be the book for that. If you do read this, I hope it will urge you to seek more information from the churches. There are plenty of priests and pastors in the churches who would welcome your interest to further explore this amazing faith.
Enthralling History points out that they are trying to show how and why Christianity is such a powerful religion, not trying to convert readers. Although I've read much of the early History of Christianity before, Enthralling History rounds out its overview by looking at Christianity in the 20th century.
I was particularly intrigued by German nationalists (during WW II) who tried to blend Christianity with the German state. I wasn't aware that some German dissidents formed the Confessing Church. In 1934, the Barmen Declaration officially condemned the German state and reaffirmed the church's traditional views.
Another surprise was learning that Stalin encouraged religion during the dark days of WWII. Then, I thought the Russian leadership viewed religion as opium for the masses.
The most interesting conclusion is that since the establishment of Israel, there has been a stronger emphasis on "end times' within the Christian churches.
I found this overview to be thought-provoking and worthwhile reading.
