“The Norton Guide to Equity Minded Teaching” by Isis Artze-Vega, Flower Darby, Bryan Dewbury, and Mays Imad
In this book, our authors take us through significant steps to developing college-level pedagogy in an equity minded direction. The book addresses both pre-course preparations, interactions during the course sequence, and critical reflection after the course.
For me, this guide is going to make a great reference to look back on as I make minor adjustments to my courses for equity. On the whole, I found it heartening that I was already doing at least a good job at many of the recommendations, but there were still some fantastic notes that I want to incorporate. I will say, however, that the book could be quite dense at times and felt like a slew of information. I almost wonder if the format of the book needed to incorporate more workbook style pages and elements. There were sections for practical tips and “how to apply” boxes, but a lot of the step by step detail was written out as big blocks of text which were not as accessible or easy to remember or find.
In summary, good book, great ideas, but I would not consider it an enjoyable read.
